Abstract
Our laboratory originally synthesized strontium(Sr)‐containing α‐calcium sulphate hemihydrate/nano‐hydroxyapatite composite (Sr‐α‐CSH/n‐HA) and demonstrated its ability to repair critical bone defects. This study attempted to incorporate aspirin into it to produce a better bone graft material for critical bone defects. After 5% Sr‐α‐CSH was prepared by coprecipitation and hydrothermal methods, it was mixed with aspirin solution of different concentrations (50 μg/ml, 200 μg/ml, 800 μg/ml and 3200 μg/ml) at a fixed liquid‐solid ratio (0.54 v/w) to obtain aspirin‐loaded Sr‐α‐CSH/n‐HA composite. In vitro experiments were performed on the composite extracts. The tibial defects (3 mm*5 mm) in SD rat model were filled with the composite for 4 weeks and 12 weeks to evaluate its osteogenic capacity in vivo. Our results showed its capability of proliferation, migration and osteogenesis of BMSCs in vitro got improved. In vivo treatment with 800 μg/ml aspirin–loaded Sr‐α‐CSH/n‐HA composite led to significantly more new bone formation in the defects compared with Sr‐α‐CSH/n‐HA composite and significantly promoted the expression of osteogenic‐related genes and inhibited osteoclast activity. In general, our research suggests that aspirin‐loaded Sr‐α‐CSH/n‐HA composite may have a greater capacity of repairing tibial defects in SD rats than simple Sr‐α‐CSH/n‐HA composite.

Abstract
Hydroxyapatite (HAp) is a bioactive and vital material which has found many applications in the biomedical and clinical fields. This bio-ceramic powder can be synthesized via different bio-waste materials. In this study, the production of natural nanohydroxyapatite was produced through calcination of untreated turkey femur-bone waste powder at 850 °C followed by ball milling the powder. The obtained powder was characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis. The morphology, size, and elemental composition of obtained turkey hydroxyapatite (THA) particles were investigated by scanning electron microcopy (SEM), transmission electron microcopy (TEM), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) analysis, in which the average particle size of ball milled THA was found to be about 85 nm with a Ca/P ratio of 1.63. The powder was then cold pressed and later sintered at 850, 950, 1050, and 1150 °C to evaluate its mechanical properties in terms of compressive strength and hardness. The results revealed that the strength and hardness of the samples increased by increasing the sintering temperature up to 1150 °C. Finally, the maximum values of hardness and compressive strength of the sintered THA were obtained at 1150 °C (37.44 MPa and 3.2 GPa, respectively).

Abstract
Due to high pollution associated with traditional Portland cement and bio-carbonate cement, a new generation of cementitious material needs to be developed. Bio-barium phosphate, magnesium phosphate, and ferric phosphate are synthesized by bio-mineralization. Firstly, the substrate is hydrolyzed by alkaline phosphatase secreted via phosphate-mineralization microbes, obtaining phosphate ions. Micro- and nano-scale phosphate minerals are prepared by phosphate ions reacting with different types of metal cation. The setting time of bio-BaHPO4 has a greater effect on the strength of sand columns when a mixing precipitation process is innovatively adopted. The strength of the sand columns increases as bio-BaHPO4 content (10~50%) increases. The optimum content of bio-BaHPO4 is 60%. Porosity and permeability of the sand columns decrease as bio-BaHPO4 content (10~60%) increases. Ammonium and ammonia can effectively be synthesized to magnesium ammonium phosphate by adding K2HPO4·3H2O to Sporosarcina pasteurii liquid. Permeability, porosity, and compressive strength of the sand columns are close to CJ1, CJ1.5, and CJ2 cementation. However, the fixation ammonia ratio of CJ2 is bigger than CJ1 and CJ1.5 (The mixture solutions of Sporosarcina pasteurii and K2HPO4·3H2O (1, 1.5, and 2 mol/L) are named as CJ1, CJ1.5, and CJ2) cementation. The results show that the Sporosarcina pasteurii liquid containing K2HPO4·3H2O (2 mol/L) and the mixture solution of MgCl2 and urea (3 mol/L) cemented loose sand particles best. Two types of bio-cement are environmentally friendly and can partially or completely replace bio-carbonate cement.

Comparative Analysis of Proteins with Stimulating Activity on Ovarian Estradiol Biosynthesis from Four Different Dioscorea Species in vitro Using Both Phenotypic and Target-based Approaches: Implication for Treating Menopause. Abstract
Rhizomes of Dioscorea species are traditionally used for relieving menopausal syndromes in Chinese medicine. The estrogen-stimulating bioactive principles have been demonstrated in our previous study. In this study, the estrogen-stimulating effects of proteins isolated from four Dioscorea species [D. alata L. (DA), D. zingiberensis C.H. Wright (DH), D. collettii var. hypoglauca (Palib.) S.J. Pei & C.T. Ting (DH), and D. oppositifolia L. (DO)] have been investigated and compared. Microscopic authentication of four Dioscorea species was performed by using paraffin and powder sections of the rhizomes. The potential bioactive proteins of four Dioscorea species have been rapidly isolated by using a DOI-antibody affinity column chromatography on immobilized antibodies against on estradiol-stimulating protein from DO (DOI), and their bioactivity has been rapidly confirmed and compared by phenotypic (i.e., estradiol-stimulating effect) and target-based (i.e., STAR, aromatase, estrogen receptors) screening approaches. The estrogen-stimulating activity of bioactive proteins from DO is the highest. In addition, bioactive proteins from DO upregulated the estradiol-metabolizing enzymes (aromatase and steroidogenic acute regulatory protein). Meanwhile, bioactive proteins from DA, DH and DO upregulated estrogen receptor β (ERβ). All bioactive proteins did not change the expression of estrogen receptor β (ERα). The estrogen-stimulating bioactive proteins isolated from DO increased biosynthesis of estradiol and upregulated the protein expression of aromatase, steroidogenic acute regulatory protein, and ERβ. The results scientifically support the traditional use of DO in Chinese medicine for relieving menopausal syndrome. Besides, proteins from DA and DZ could also upregulate the translational levels of ERβ, and potentially reducing the risk of ovarian cancer, which also support the clinical use of them for treating female aging disorder.
