Bioethanol Production Using Waste Seaweed Obtained from Gwangalli Beach, Busan, Korea by Co-culture of Yeasts with Adaptive Evolution

Effects of high-pressure processing on the physicochemical and adsorption properties, structural characteristics, and dietary fiber content of kelp (Laminaria japonica)

To investigate the effects of high-pressure processing (HPP) on the physicochemical and adsorption properties and structural characteristics of kelp, kelp slice (KS) and kelp powder (KP) were treated under different pressures (300, 450, and 600 MPa) for 5 and 10 min. Compared to untreated KP, HPP-treated KP yielded a 1.31-fold increase in water holding capacity (600 MPa/5 min), a 0.12-fold increase in swelling capacity (450 MPa/10 min), a 1.33-fold increase in oil holding capacity (600 MPa/10 min), a 10-fold increase in glucose adsorption capacity (450 MPa/10 min), and a 0.22-fold increase in cholesterol adsorption capacity (163.1 mg/g DW at 450 MPa/10 min), and exhibited good Cd (Ⅱ) adsorption capacity when its concentration was 10 mmol/L in the small intestine. The physicochemical properties of HPP-treated KS were not improved due to its low specific surface area. In addition, HPP treatment efficiently reduced the particle size of KP and increased its total and soluble dietary fiber content by 17% and 63% at 600 MPa/10 min, respectively. Scanning electron microscope micrographs demonstrated that the surface of HPP-treated KP was rough and porous, and the specific surface area increased with increasing pressure and processing time. To conclude, the results obtained in the present study suggest that HPP is a promising processing method for improving the functionality and structural characteristics of KP and provide a theoretical basis for the utilization of HPP-treated KP as a fiber-rich ingredient in the functional food industry.

Artificial microbial consortia for bioproduction processes

The application of artificial microbial consortia for biotechnological production processes is an emerging field in research as it offers great potential for the improvement of established as well as the development of novel processes. In this review, we summarize recent highlights in the usage of various microbial consortia for the production of, for example, platform chemicals, biofuels, or pharmaceutical compounds. It aims to demonstrate the great potential of co-cultures by employing different organisms and interaction mechanisms and exploiting their respective advantages. Bacteria and yeasts often offer a broad spectrum of possible products, fungi enable the utilization of complex lignocellulosic substrates via enzyme secretion and hydrolysis, and microalgae can feature their abilities to fixate CO2 through photosynthesis for other organisms as well as to form lipids as potential fuelstocks. However, the complexity of interactions between microbes require methods for observing population dynamics within the process and modern approaches such as modeling or automation for process development. After shortly discussing these interaction mechanisms, we aim to present a broad variety of successfully established co-culture processes to display the potential of artificial microbial consortia for the production of biotechnological products.

On the Optimization of Fermentation Conditions for Enhanced Bioethanol Yields from Starchy Biowaste via Yeast Co-Cultures

The present study aims to assess the impact of the type of yeast consortium used during bioethanol production from starchy biowastes and to determine the optimal fermentation conditions for enhanced bioethanol production. Three different yeast strains, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Pichia barkeri, and Candida intermedia were used in mono- and co-cultures with pretreated waste-rice as substrate. The optimization of fermentation conditions i.e., fermentation time, temperature, pH, and inoculum size, was investigated in small-scale batch cultures and subsequently, the optimal conditions were applied for scaling-up and validation of the process in a 7-L fermenter. It was shown that co-culturing of yeasts either in couples or triples significantly enhanced the fermentation efficiency of the process, with ethanol yield reaching 167.80 ± 0.49 g/kg of biowaste during experiments in the fermenter.

Acidolysis as a biorefinery approach to producing advanced bioenergy from macroalgal biomass: A state-of-the-art review

Facing fossil fuels consumption and its accompanying environmental pollution, macroalgae, as a major part of the third-generation (3G) biomass, has great potential for bioenergy development due to its species-abundant, renewable and carbohydrate-rich properties. Diluted acid treatment is one of the most effective approaches to releasing fermentable sugars from macroalgal biomass in a short period, but the optimal conditions need to be explored to maximize the hydrolytic yield for the subsequent microbial conversion. Therefore, this review aims to summarize the latest advances in various acids and other auxiliary methods adopted to increase the hydrolytic efficiency of macroalgae. Following an overview of the strategies of different algal types, methods involved in the bioconversion of biofuels and microbial fuel cells (MFC) from algal hydrolysates are also described. For the 3G biorefinery development, the review further discusses key challenges and trends for future utilizing marine biomass to achieve the large-scale industrial production.

The utilization of seawater for the hydrolysis of macroalgae and subsequent bioethanol fermentation

A novel seawater-based pretreatment process was developed to improve the hydrolysis yield of brown (Laminaria digitata), green (Ulva linza) and red (Porphyra umbilicalis) macroalgae. Pre-treated with 5% sulphuric acid at 121 °C, 15 minutes, L. digitata, U. linza and P. umbilicalis liberated 64.63 ± 0.30%, 69.19 ± 0.11% and 63.03 ± 0.04% sugar in seawater compared with 52.82 ± 0.16%, 45.93 ± 0.37% and 48.60 ± 0.07% in reverse-osmosis water, respectively. Low hydrolysis yields (2.6-11.7%) were observed in alkali and hydrothermal pretreatment of macroalgae, although seawater led to relatively higher yields. SEM images of hydrolyzed macroalgae showed that reverse-osmosis water caused contortions in the remaining cell walls following acid and hydrothermal pre-treatments in the L. digitata and U. linza samples. Fed-batch fermentations using concentrated green seaweed hydrolysates and seawater with marine yeast Wickerhamomyces anomalus M15 produced 48.24 ± 0.01 g/L ethanol with an overall yield of 0.329 g/g available sugars. Overall, using seawater in hydrolysis of seaweed increased sugar hydrolysis yield and subsequent bioethanol production.

Co-culturing of oleaginous microalgae and yeast: paradigm shift towards enhanced lipid productivity

Oleaginous microalgae and yeast are the two major propitious factories which are sustainable sources for biodiesel production, as they can accumulate high quantities of lipids inside their bodies. To date, various microalgal and yeast species have been exploited singly for biodiesel production. However, despite the ongoing efforts, their low lipid productivity and the high cost of cultivation are still the major bottlenecks hindering their large-scale deployment. Co-culturing of microalgae and yeast has the potential to increase the overall lipid productivity by minimizing its production cost as both these organisms can utilize each other's by-products. Microalgae act as an O₂ generator for yeast while consuming the CO₂ and organic acids released by the yeast cells. Further, yeast can break complex sugars in the medium, which can then be utilized by microalgae thereby opening new options for copious and low-cost feedstocks such as agricultural residues. The current review provides a historical and technical overview of the existing studies on co-culturing of yeast and microalgae and elucidates the crucial factors that affect the symbiotic relationship between these two organisms. Furthermore, the review also highlighted the advantages and the future perspectives for paving a path towards a sustainable biodiesel product.
