Evaluation the Weekly Intake of Some Wild Edible Indigenous Mushrooms Collected in Different Regions in Tunceli, Turkey

Element and Water-Soluble Vitamins Profile of Rhus coriaria L. (Sumac) Grown in Different Regions

In this study, the amounts of some elements and water-soluble vitamins in Rhus coriaria L. (Sumac) samples grown in different regions were analyzed by ICP-OES and HPLC, respectively. The maximum amount of Na, K, Mg, and P was determined in the sumac samples of Kadana, Sheladize, Maraş, and Derishke regions, respectively. The richest regions in terms of trace elements such as Zn, Cu, Fe, Se, Mn, Cr, Mo, Ni, and B were Charput, Derishke, Ranya, Charput, Ranya, Derishke, Elazığ, Derishke, and Kadana, respectively. The highest amount of As, Cd, Pb, and Hg in sumac samples were determined in Kadana, Kadana, Trawanish, and Charput regions, respectively, while the lowest amounts were determined in Maraş, Sheladize, Elazig, and Trawanish regions sumac samples. Since target hazard coefficient (THQ) and total target hazard coefficient (TTHQ) values calculated for minor, toxic and heavy metals investigated in sumac samples are well below one; therefore, they do not pose a health risk. From the result obtained, sumac is a good food additive spice in terms of water-soluble vitamins except ascorbic acid. The amounts of ascorbic acid, thiamine, riboflavin, nicotine amide, nicotinic acid, pantothenic acid, pyridoxine, folic acid, and cyanocobalamin in sumac samples varied between 78.90-36.57, 173.57-61.11, 518.4-182.3, 314.0-105.6, 1292.1-788.7, 779.2-301.7, 385.8-133.4, 826.2-473.1, and 192.6-73.9 µg/g dw, respectively. Differences in the amount of elements and water-soluble vitamins among sumac samples from different regions may be due to geographical and ecological reasons.

Application of Diffusive Gradients in Thin-films (DGT) for assessing the heavy metals mobility in soil and prediction of their transfer to Russula virescens

Although edible mushrooms are considered a source of many beneficial nutrients for human, they can also represent a risk to health due to their capacity to accumulate heavy metals. In this study, the total dissolved in soil solution and labile concentrations of heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Cu, Zn, Co, Cr, Mn, Ni, and Fe) in soil were measured and correlated with their concentrations accumulated in Russula virescens wild mushrooms. The diffusive gradient in thin films (DGT) technique was used to measure the labile metals content in the soil (CDGT), and corroborated with the metals concentrations in soil solution (Csoln) was used to calculate an R-value, which can estimate the metals resupply from soil solid phase when they are uptake by mushroom. The DGT-labile metal concentrations decreased in the order Mn > Fe > Zn > Cu > Co > Ni > Cd ≅ Pb > Cr. The R-values, calculated as the ratio between CDGT and Csoln decreased in the order: Cd (0.50) > Zn (0.37) > Pb (0.33) > Cu (0.24) ≅ Ni (0.24) ≅ Co (0.23) > Mn (0.16) > Fe (0.12) > Cr (0.04). For the first time, we compared the R-values with the bioaccumulation factors (BAFs) in mushrooms, and it was observed that, a similar increasing trend of BAFs with the R-values exists, thus the capacity of the soil solid phase to fast re-supply metals to soil solution increases BAFs. Although the soil samples were not contaminated with heavy metals above the legislative limits, the concentrations of heavy metals accumulated in mushrooms were high enough to pose risks for humans, mainly for children, due to their Cu content.

The Determination of Toxic Metals in some Traditional Cosmetic Products and Health Risk Assessment

In present study, the levels of some toxic elements in 19 different home-made cosmetic products (spray hair dye, henna, tattoo, eyeliner, eye mascara, smear, lip moisturizer, and lipstick) were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometric (ICP-MS) after microwave digestion. The ICP-MS results were verified by the analyzing certificated reference material (EnviroMAT Drinking Water, High).The detection limit (LOD) was set from 0.1 to 0.2 and the quantification limit (LOQ) from 0.2 to 0.8 μg L^-1 and the recoveries estimated from 99% to 109%. The relative standard deviation (RSD) (%) for elements was determined in the range of 0.9 and 2.1%. Although various concentrations of arsenic (As),cadmium (Cd), cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr), cupper (Cu), and nickel (Ni) were determined in some samples, lead (Pb) concentration was found in all the samples. Data obtained were compared with the permissible limit of cosmetic products by the WHO. The concentration of Pb in smear samples was higher than the permitted limit created by the WHO, and Ni concentration in the some samples exceeds the limit set by the WHO. The rank order of toxic elements based on THQ index was Cr > Pb > Ni. The potential non-carcinogenic was considerably lower than the safe risk limits (THQ > 1).

Mercury Content in Three Edible Wild-Growing Mushroom Species from Different Environmentally Loaded Areas in Slovakia: An Ecological and Human Health Risk Assessment

Three edible mushroom species (Imlera badia, Boletus subtomentosus, Xerocomellus chrysenteron) sampled in 60 different localities of Slovakia were evaluated to determine health risks (associated with mercury content) arising from their consumption. Total content of mercury in soil and mushroom samples was determined by an AMA-254 analyzer. Soil pollution by mercury was evaluated by contamination factor (C_f), pollution load index (PLI), and geoaccumulation index (I_geo). Bioaccumulation factor (BAF), translocation factor (Qc/s), provisional tolerably weekly intake (%PTWI), estimated daily intake (EDI), and target hazard quotient (THQ) were used to describe and compare uptake and transition abilities of mushrooms, and the health risk arising from mushroom consumption. Mercury content in soil significantly influences the content of mercury in mushroom fruiting body parts. Caps and stipes of Boletus subtomentosus were found to be the best mercury accumulator. According to the EDI, consumption of the evaluated mushroom species represents a serious threat for adults and children. The lowest values of THQ were found for Xerocomellus chysenteron.

Exposure to copper and risk assessment for human health via consumption of alcoholic beverages

Present study was performed using a Box-Behnken Design (BBD) combined with a response surface methodology (RSM). The ultimate goal of this research was to apply BBD for modeling of copper (Cu²⁺) ions from alcoholic beverages and evaluate health risk assessment of Cu²⁺ via consumption of alcoholic beverages. The importance of independent paramaters and their interactions were examined using analysis of variance (ANOVA). Natural clay was investigated to remove Cu²⁺ ions from some alcoholic beverage samples including beer and wine. X-ray diffraction (XRD), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with energy dispersive X-ray (EDS) analysis were used for adsorbent characterization. Same analyzes were applied for Cu²⁺ loaded clay. In addition, experimental studies showed that Freundlich isotherm was better than Langmuir isotherm. Finally, optimized method was applied to alcoholic beverages. Besides target hazard quotients (THQ), estimated daily intake (EDI) values were calculated, to assess a health risk resulting from these alcoholic beverages regular consumption. The EDI values of Cu (µg/day/person) through consumption of investigated drinks were less than the recommended dietary allowance values. Also, the THQ values of Cu²⁺ were less than 1. According to estimated target hazard, it can be said no long life health concerns of Cu²⁺ is associated with the consumption of studied drinks. Obtained results were compared with the data from literature and levels set by regulatory authorities, it can be clearly stated that the consumption of mentioned alcoholic beverages do not pose a toxicological risk.
