Abstract
Waste milk (WM) is commonly used in calf feeding to reduce rearing costs; however, its effects on the innate immune response remain unexplored. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of WM on the innate immune response and inflammatory profile of pre-weaned dairy calves. Thirty male Holstein calves were assigned to receive pasteurized waste milk (PWM), saleable milk (SM), and WM (n = 10 in each group). Blood samples were collected on D7, D21, D35, D49, and D63 (days of life) to assess the white blood cell (WBC) count, phagocytic activity of polymorphonuclear cells (PMN), and nitric oxide (NO) production by monocyte-derived macrophages, in addition to the measurement of oxidative stress biomarkers and haptoglobin concentration. A trend towards a higher occurrence of respiratory disease was detected in calves that received WM, followed by PWM. A group effect (P = 0.00) was observed in absolute monocyte values, with higher values found in the WM group. Only the TBARS concentration showed a group × time interaction among all oxidative stress biomarkers, with the highest mean found in calves receiving WM, followed by those receiving PWM and SM. Elevated TBARS concentrations indicated higher lipid peroxidation, which may have resulted from the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) due to immune challenges from ingesting pathogens present in WM. Haptoglobin concentration was unaffected. WM promoted lipid peroxidation and antioxidant enzyme activity, suggesting a pro-inflammatory effect. The time-effects of PMN phagocytosis reflected the development of the immune system in neonatal calves, which is consistent with previous studies.

Abstract
Reduced-protein diet can save protein ingredients and reduce nitrogen (N) losses. However, the effect of low protein diet on the mineral uptake and utilization in broilers needs to be explored. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of low-protein diet on the growth performance, N deposition, mineral contents in serum, tissues and excreta, and the activities and gene expression of related enzymes in tissues of medium-growing yellow-feathered broilers, so as to elucidate the relationship between dietary protein level and the absorption and utilization of minerals in broilers. A total of 72 1-d-old Spotted-Brown male broilers were randomly allotted to 1 of 2 treatments with 6 replicate cages of 6 birds per cage for each treatment. The dietary crude protein (CP) levels for the two treatments were 21 % (the control treatment) and 19 % (low protein treatment), respectively. The experimental period was 30 d. The results showed that no differences (P > 0.05) were detected in average daily gain, average daily feed intake and feed: gain ratio of broilers during 1 to 30 d between the two treatments. However, low protein intake increased (P < 0.05) N retention rate, serum P, Cu and Mn, and excreta Cu, Mn and Zn, and decreased (P < 0.05) liver P and excreta P. In addition, birds fed low protein diet had higher (P < 0.05) manganese superoxide dismutase, and total superoxide dismutase activities in liver, and total antioxidant capacity and malondialdehyde content in heart, and lower (P < 0.05) copper-zinc superoxide dismutase (CuZnSOD) and succinate dehydrogenase activities in liver and CuZnSOD mRNA level in heart. In conclusion, the reduction of dietary CP content from 21 % to 19 % improved N retention, the absorption of P, Cu and Mn, as well as the antioxidant ability of liver and heart, and influenced metabolic utilization of P, Cu, Zn, Fe and Mn in medium-growing yellow-feathered broilers from 1 to 30 d of age.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Feeding milk substitutes with low iron content or whole milk without iron supplementation is considered a major factor in developing iron-deficiency anemia in neonatal dairy calves. Young calves are often supplemented with iron dextran injections on the first day of life to prevent anemia. However, the effects of preventive treatment and the presence of disease on serum iron (Fe) concentrations, serum ferritin levels, and hematological blood parameters during the early neonatal stages have not been examined in detail. Therefore, we examined and evaluated the effects of iron dextran injections and health status on the development of hematocrit (Ht), red blood cells (RBC), hemoglobin concentration (Hb), erythrocyte indices (mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration), Fe, and serum ferritin concentrations in dairy calves within the first 10 days of life. The suitability of serum ferritin as a reliable indicator of anemia in very young calves was evaluated by correlating ferritin concentrations with known laboratory diagnostic parameters of anemia. RESULTS Iron supplementation significantly increased Fe levels (P = 0.048) but did not affect serum ferritin levels in neonatal calves. Fe concentrations were significantly lower in diseased than healthy calves (P = 0.0417). Iron supplementation significantly affected the health status, as observed in Ht (Ptreat=0.0057; Phealth=0.0097), RBC (Ptreat=0.0342; Phealth=0.0243), and Hb (Ptreat=0.0170; Phealth=0.0168). Serum ferritin levels did not significantly correlate with Fe levels. Both groups showed marked differences in ferritin levels, with the highest levels measured on day 2. Fe concentrations showed weak negative correlations with Hb and Ht levels on day 3 (ρ=-0.45; P = 0.0034 and ρ=-0.045; P = 0.0032, respectively). RBC count showed strong positive correlations with Hb and Ht levels (ρ = 0.91 and ρ = 0.93; P < 0.001). CONCLUSION Iron dextran injections increased Fe concentrations but reduced Ht level, RBC count, and Hb level. The presence of diseases led to a reduction in Fe and higher values of Ht, RBC, and Hb in moderate disease than in severe disease. Due to physiological fluctuations during the first 3 days of life, serum ferritin level seems unuseful for evaluating iron storage before day 4 of life.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to assess the influence of early life iron supplementation on the haematological parameters of calves fed milk replacer on a high plane of nutrition. METHODS Thirty calves were allocated to receive either a sham treatment (CON), injection of 1000 mg Fe3+ (INJ) or oral administration of 1050 mg Fe3+ (ORAL), all administered less than 1 hour after birth. Blood was obtained before treatment, on days 1, 3, 5 and 7 of life and once weekly until week 9. Samples were analysed for haemoglobin (Hb), packed cell volume (PCV) and estimated transferrin saturation (%TSAT). RESULTS The Hb and PCV of calves in the INJ and ORAL groups were above the values of those in the CON group throughout the study. Hb and PCV of the CON group remained within the reference range for calves. The %TSAT exceeded reported ranges in the ORAL group in the first week. Values for the CON group were below the INJ and ORAL groups throughout the entire study. Average daily gain did not differ between treatments. LIMITATIONS The sample size was insufficient to assess the influence of iron supplementation on disease development. Furthermore, the study was set in a controlled environment and not performed under field conditions. CONCLUSIONS Oral and subcutaneous iron administration had similar effects on haematological development but resulted in numerically different transferrin saturation. Control animals showed lower Hb and PCV but did not develop overt anaemia.

Abstract
The aim is to solve the problem of the urgent need of a nonradiation, noninvasive, and simple-to-operate diagnostic method for neonatal pneumonia that can indicate the severity of the disease and dynamically monitor the outcome of the disease. The authors propose a bedside high-frequency ultrasound technique based on methods for evaluation in the detection and treatment of neonatal pneumonia. The results obtained are as follows: the sensitivity of neonatal lung ultrasound in the diagnosis of neonatal pneumonia was 96.6%, the specificity was 93.3%, the positive predictive value was 93.5%, and the negative predictive value was 96.5%. The sensitivity of chest X-ray in the diagnosis of neonatal pneumonia was 93.3%. Compared with the lung ultrasound and chest X-ray in the diagnosis of neonatal pneumonia, the two had a good correlation. The neonatal respiratory score was positively correlated with the lung ultrasound score, and the higher the lung ultrasound score, the more severe the disease. The score decreased by 35% after 3 days of treatment and 68% after 7 days of treatment, indicating that the lung high-frequency ultrasound score can be very effective in characterizing the treatment situation. It has been demonstrated that the lung ultrasound can be used as an imaging method for the diagnosis of neonatal pneumonia. The higher the lung ultrasound score, the more severe the disease, and the lung ultrasound score was positively correlated with the disease severity. With dynamic monitoring of the lung ultrasound and the gradual improvement of clinical symptoms after treatment, the lung ultrasound score gradually decreased; therefore, the lung ultrasound can be used for re-examination of neonatal pneumonia to evaluate the treatment effect and guidance.

Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of milk supplemented with organic iron on performance, blood hematology, iron metabolism parameters, biochemical and immunological parameters in suckling lambs. Thirty-six newborn Dalagh lambs were randomly divided into three groups with 12 replications. The control group was fed with milk without organic iron. The other two groups were fed milk supplemented with 25 and 50 mg/d organic iron, respectively. During the experiment, increased daily weight gain and total body weight were observed in the iron-supplemented groups. An increase in the levels of red blood cell, hemoglobin, hematocrit, mean corpuscular hemoglobin, and mean corpuscular concentration in iron supplemented groups was indicated. Consumption of organic iron caused a significant decrease in plasma copper concentration. Total antioxidant status level was lower, but levels of glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, and catalase were higher in iron supplemented groups. In organic iron supplemented groups, insulin and thyroid hormones levels were significantly increased, and glucose level was significantly decreased. In organic iron supplemented groups, alkaline phosphatase level significantly increased, and aminotransferase level significantly decreased. Overall, the use of organic iron in the milk improved the performance and health in suckling lambs, and since a lower level of supplementation is naturally preferable, supplementation of milk with 25 mg/d organic iron is recommended.
