Low-dimensional trade-offs fail to explain richness and structure in species-rich plant communities

Plant functional types determine how close postfire seedlings are from their parents in a species-rich shrubland

BACKGROUND AND AIMS

Fine-scale spatial patterns of the seedlings of co-occurring species reveal the relative success of reproduction and dispersal and may help interpret coexistence patterns of adult plants. To understand whether postfire community dynamics are controlled by mathematical, biological or environmental factors, we documented seedling-adult (putative parent) distances for a range of co-occurring species. We hypothesized that nearest-seedling-to-adult distances should be a function of the distance between the closest conspecific seedlings, closest inter-adult distances and seedling-to-parent ratios, and also that these should scale up in a consistent way from all individuals, to within and between species and finally between functional types (FTs).

METHODS

We assessed seedling-adult, seedling-seedling and adult-adult distances for 19 co-occurring shrub species 10 months after fire in a species-rich shrubland in south-western Australia. Species were categorized into 2 × 2 FTs: those that are killed by fire [non-(re)sprouters] vs. those that survive (resprouters) in nine taxonomically matched pairs, and those that disperse their seeds prefire (geosporous) vs. those that disperse their seeds postfire (serotinous).

KEY RESULTS

For the total data set and means for all species, seedling-adult distance was essentially a mathematical phenomenon, and correlated positively with seedling-seedling distance and adult-adult distance, and inversely with seedlings per adult. Among the four FTs, seedling-adult distance was shortest for geosporous non-sprouters and widest for serotinous resprouters. Why adults that produce few seedlings (resprouters) should be further away from them defies a simple mathematical or biological explanation at present. Ecologically, however, it is adaptive: the closest seedling was usually under the (now incinerated) parent crown of non-sprouters whereas those of resprouters were on average four times further away.

CONCLUSIONS

Our study highlights the value of recognizing four reproductive syndromes within fire-prone vegetation, and shows how these are characterized by marked differences in their seedling-adult spatial relations that serve to enhance biodiversity of the community.

Towards a New Generation of Trait-Flexible Vegetation Models

Plant trait variability, emerging from eco-evolutionary dynamics that range from alleles to macroecological scales, is one of the most elusive, but possibly most consequential, aspects of biodiversity. Plasticity, epigenetics, and genetic diversity are major determinants of how plants will respond to climate change, yet these processes are rarely represented in current vegetation models. Here, we provide an overview of the challenges associated with understanding the causes and consequences of plant trait variability, and review current developments to include plasticity and evolutionary mechanisms in vegetation models. We also present a roadmap of research priorities to develop a next generation of vegetation models with flexible traits. Including trait variability in vegetation models is necessary to better represent biosphere responses to global change.

Integrating trait-based empirical and modeling research to improve ecological restoration

A global ecological restoration agenda has led to ambitious programs in environmental policy to mitigate declines in biodiversity and ecosystem services. Current restoration programs can incompletely return desired ecosystem service levels, while resilience of restored ecosystems to future threats is unknown. It is therefore essential to advance understanding and better utilize knowledge from ecological literature in restoration approaches. We identified an incomplete linkage between global change ecology, ecosystem function research, and restoration ecology. This gap impedes a full understanding of the interactive effects of changing environmental factors on the long-term provision of ecosystem functions and a quantification of trade-offs and synergies among multiple services. Approaches that account for the effects of multiple changing factors on the composition of plant traits and their direct and indirect impact on the provision of ecosystem functions and services can close this gap. However, studies on this multilayered relationship are currently missing. We therefore propose an integrated restoration agenda complementing trait-based empirical studies with simulation modeling. We introduce an ongoing case study to demonstrate how this framework could allow systematic assessment of the impacts of interacting environmental factors on long-term service provisioning. Our proposed agenda will benefit restoration programs by suggesting plant species compositions with specific traits that maximize the supply of multiple ecosystem services in the long term. Once the suggested compositions have been implemented in actual restoration projects, these assemblages should be monitored to assess whether they are resilient as well as to improve model parameterization. Additionally, the integration of empirical and simulation modeling research can improve global outcomes by raising the awareness of which restoration goals can be achieved, due to the quantification of trade-offs and synergies among ecosystem services under a wide range of environmental conditions.

Seed size, fecundity and postfire regeneration strategy are interdependent in Hakea

Seed size is a key functional trait that affects plant fitness at the seedling stage and may vary greatly with species fruit size, growth form and fecundity. Using structural equation modelling (SEM) and correlated trait evolution analysis, we investigated the interaction network between seed size and fecundity, postfire regeneration strategy, fruit size, plant height and serotiny (on-plant seed storage) among 82 species of the woody shrub genus, Hakea, with a wide spectrum of seed sizes (2–500 mg). Seed size is negatively correlated with fecundity, while fire-killed species (nonsprouters) produce more seeds than resprouters though they are of similar size. Seed size is unrelated to plant height and level of serotiny while it scales allometrically with fruit size. A strong phylogenetic signal in seed size revealed phylogenetic constraints on seed size variation in Hakea. Our analyses suggest a causal relationship between seed size, fecundity and postfire regeneration strategy in Hakea. These results demonstrate that fruit size, fecundity and evolutionary history have had most control over seed size variation among Hakea species.
