Bioelectrogenesis from Raw Algal Biomass Through Microbial Fuel Cells: Effect of Acetate as Co-substrate

Pretreatment of cyanobacterial biomass for the production of biofuel in microbial fuel cells

The present study delves into phototrophic cyanobacterial biomass production by concomitant CO₂ sequestration, selecting an effective pretreatment condition followed by using this as feedstock for green fuel or bioelectricity production by Microbial Fuel Cells (MFC). The performance of the various photobioreactors were put up against Anabaena sp. PCC 7120 biomass production. Maximum microalgal biomass of 1.15 gL^-1 was attained in an airlift bioreactor for 9 days under a light intensity of 100 µEm^-2s^-1. Pretreatment methods like sonication, HCl acid, and H₂O₂ treatment (2 % vv^-1) were applied to digest harvested biomass. Higher power output (6.76 Wm^-3) was attained, and 73.5 % COD was eliminated using 2 % (vv^-1) acid pre-treated biomass. Better results were obtained using acid pre-treated biomass because the conductivity of the anolyte increased with the neutralization of acid-pre-treated biomass. The results demonstrate that cyanobacterial biomass could be employed successfully as a renewable resource for green fuel generation in MFCs.

Mild Alkaline Pretreatment of Rice Straw as a Feedstock in Microbial Fuel Cells for Generation of Bioelectricity

The dependency on non-renewable fossil fuels as an energy source has drastically increased global temperatures. Their continuous use poses a great threat to the existing energy reserves. Therefore, the energy sector has taken a turn toward developing eco-friendly, sustainable energy generation by using sustainable lignocellulosic wastes, such as rice straw (RS). For lignocellulosic waste to be utilized as an efficient energy source, it needs to be broken down into less complex forms by pretreatment processes, such as alkaline pretreatment using NaOH. Varied NaOH concentrations (0.5%,1.0%,1.5%,2%) for alkaline pretreatment of RS were used for the holocellulose generation. Amongst the four NaOH concentrations tested, RS-1.5% exhibited higher holocellulose generation of 80.1%, whereas 0.5%, 1 5 and 2% pointed 71.9%, 73.8%, and 78.5% holocellulose generation, respectively. Further, microbial fuel cells (MFCs) were tested for voltage generation by utilizing holocellulose generated from untreated (RS-0%) and mildly alkaline pretreated RS (RS-1.5%) as a feedstock. The MFC voltage and maximum power generation using RS-0% were 194 mV and 167 mW/m2, respectively. With RS-1.5%, the voltage and maximum power generation were 556 mV and 583 mW/m2, respectively. The power density of RS-1.5% was three-fold higher than that of RS-0%. The increase in MFC power generation suggests that alkaline pretreatment plays a crucial role in enhancing the overall performance.

Organic Waste Substrates for Bioenergy Production via Microbial Fuel Cells: A Key Point Review

High-energy consumption globally has raised questions about the low environmentally friendly and high-cost processes used until now for energy production. Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) may support alternative more economically and environmentally favorable ways of bioenergy production based on their advantage of using waste. MFCs work as bio-electrochemical devices that consume organic substrates in order for the electrogenic bacteria and/or enzyme cultures to produce electricity and simultaneously lower the environmental hazardous value of waste such as COD. The utilization of organic waste as fuels in MFCs has opened a new research path for testing a variety of by-products from several industry sectors. This review presents several organic waste substrates that can be employed as fuels in MFCs for bioenergy generation and the effect of their usage on power density, COD (chemical oxygen demand) removal, and Coulombic efficiency enhancement. Moreover, a demonstration and comparison of the different types of mixed waste regarding their efficiency for energy generation via MFCs are presented. Future perspectives for manufacturing and cost analysis plans can support scale-up processes fulfilling waste-treatment efficiency and energy-output densities.

Dynamic Changes in Soil Microbial Communities with Glucose Enrichment in Sediment Microbial Fuel Cells

To investigate soil microbial community dynamics in sediment microbial fuel cells (MFCs), this study applied nonhydric (D) and hydric (S) soils to single-chamber and mediator-free MFCs. Glucose was also used to enrich microorganisms in the soils. The voltage outputs of both the D and S sediment MFCs increased over time but differed from each other. The initial open circuit potentials were 345 and 264 mV for the D and S MFCs. The voltage output reached a maximum of 503 and 604 mV for D and S on days 125 and 131, respectively. The maximum power densities of the D and S MFCs were 2.74 and 2.12 mW m^-2, analyzed on day 50. Clustering results revealed that the two groups did not cluster after glucose supplementation and 126 days of MFC function. The change in Geobacter abundance was consistent with the voltage output, indicating that these bacteria may act as the main exoelectrogens on the anode. Spearman correlation analysis demonstrated that, in the D soils, Geobacter was positively correlated with Dialister and negatively correlated with Bradyrhizobium, Kaistobacter, Pedomicrobium, and Phascolarctobacterium; in the S soils, Geobacter was positively correlated with Shewanella and negatively correlated with Blautia. The results suggested that different soil sources in the MFCs and the addition of glucose as a nutrient produced diverse microbial communities with varying voltage output efficiencies.

Augmentation of microbial fuel cell and photocatalytic polishing technique for the treatment of hazardous dimethyl phthalate containing wastewater

In the present paper, the potentiality of integrating microbial fuel cells (MFCs) with a photocatalytic reactor to maximize the wastewater treatment efficiency with concurrent power generation was explored. Dimethyl phthalate (DMP) and acetic acid (AA) were the employed substrate and the co-substrate, respectively, using Pseudomonas aeruginosa as a biocatalyst. MFCs operated by single substrate showed the maximum power generation of 0.75-3.84 W m^-3 whereas an addition of AA as the co-substrate yielded 3-12 fold higher power generation. Pseudomonas aeruginosa produced phenazine-1-carboxylic acid in DMP-fed MFC as the metabolite whereas AA along with DMP yielded pyocyanin which reduced the charge transfer resistance. Chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency in the MFCs was circa 62% after 11 days of operation. Thereafter, it further increased albeit with a drastic reduction in power generation. Subsequently, the MFC anolyte was treated in a photocatalytic reactor under visible light irradiation and catalyzed by CuO-gC₃N₄. The performance of photocatalytic reactor was evaluated, with COD and total organic carbon (TOC) removal efficiency of 88% and 86% after 200 min of light irradiation. The present work suggests that the MFC can be integrated with photocatalysis as a sustainable wastewater treatment method with concurrent power generation.

Biodegradable and non-biodegradable fraction of municipal solid waste for multifaceted applications through a closed loop integrated refinery platform: Paving a path towards circular economy

An increase in population, rapid urbanization and industrialization has accelerated the rate of municipal solid waste generation. The current disposal of solid waste is a burgeoning issue and it's in immediate need to shift the existing disposal processes to a sustainable manner. Circular economy (CE) is a conceptual model which is been used for better use of resources and minimization of waste in a closed loop approach which could be appropriate for waste management. In this context, the present review illustrates the effective use of biodegradable and non-biodegradable fraction of solid waste in a closed loop integrated refinery platforms for the recovery of bioenergy resources and for the production of value added products. The biodegradable fraction of solid waste could be treated by advanced biological processes with the simultaneous production of bioenergy such as biohydrogen, biomethane, bioelectricity, etc., and other value added products like butanol, ethanol, methanol etc. The scheme illustrates the closed loop approach, the bioenergy generated from the biodegradable fraction of solid waste could be used for the operation of internal combustion engines and the energy could be further used for processing the waste. The non-biodegradable fraction of solid waste could be used for construction and pavement processes. Overall the study emphasizes the paradigm shift of solid waste management concepts from linear economy to a circular economy following the "Zero Waste" concept. The study also explains the circular economy policies practiced for solid waste management that stimulates the economy of the country and identify the pathways to maximize the local resources. In addition the review addresses the advanced information and communication technologies to unfold the issues and challenges faced in the solid waste management. The smart governance of managing waste using the "Internet of Things" (IoT) is one of the great precursors of technological development that could lead innovations in waste management.

Characterization of Cellobiohydrolases from Schizophyllum commune KMJ820

A novel cellobiohydrolase (CBH)-generating fungi have been isolated and categorized as Schizophyllum commune KMJ820 based on morphology and rDNA gene sequence. Cellulose powder was used as carbon source, the total enzyme activity was 11.51 U/ml is noted; which is among the highest amounts of CBH-generating microbes studied. CBH have been purified to homogenize, with pursual of serial chromatography using S. commune supernatants and two different CBHs were found; CBH 1 and 2. The filtered CBHs showed greater activity (V max = 51.4 and 20.8 U/mg) in contrast to CBHs from earlier studies. The MW (molecular weights) of S. commune CBH 1 and 2 were verified to be approximately 50 kDa and 150 kDa, respectively, by size exclusion chromatography. Even though CBHs have been evaluated from other sources, but S. commune CBH is prominent in comparison to other CBHs by its high enzyme activity.

Aligning Microbial Biodiversity for Valorization of Biowastes: Conception to Perception

Generation of biowastes is increasing rapidly and its uncontrolled, slow and persistent fermentation leads to the release of Green-house gases (GHGs) into the environment. Exploration and exploitation of microbial diversity for degrading biowastes can result in producing diverse range of bioactive molecules, which can act as a source of bioenergy, biopolymers, nutraceuticals and antimicrobials. The whole process is envisaged to manage biowastes, and reduce their pollution causing capacity, and lead to a sustainable society. A strategy has been proposed for: (1) producing bioactive molecules, and (2) achieving a zero-pollution emission by recycling of the GHGs through biological routes.

Exploitation of Citrus Peel Extract as a Feedstock for Power Generation in Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC)

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are envisioned as an evolving cost-effective process for treating organic wastes to simultaneously generate bioelectricity. Therefore, in present study a single chambered mediator- less air cathode MFC was operated for bioelectricity generation using citrus waste (CW) as a feedstock. The MFC was operated at four organic loading conditions (OLs; 3, 6, 9 and 12 kg/m³). The voltage generation and organic content reduction demonstrated the possibility of utilizing CW as a substrate in MFC. The polarization analysis revealed a high-power generation of 71.1 mW/m² with low OL of 3 kg/m³. The decrease in pH and high volatile fatty acids (VFAs) generation was noted at high OL. Our current findings suggest better performance of MFC, in terms of energy generation and organic reduction at high OL.
