Abstract
PURPOSE This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to examine the impact of global quality of life (QOL) on mortality risk in patients with cancer, considering cancer type and timepoint of QOL assessment. METHODS A systematic search was conducted using Cumulated Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, PubMed/MEDLINE, and Scopus databases from inception to December 2022. Observational studies that assessed QOL and examined mortality risk in patients with cancer were extracted. Subgroup analyses were performed for cancer types and timepoints of QOL assessment. RESULTS Overall, global QOL was significantly associated with mortality risk (hazard ratio: 1.06, 95% confidence interval: 1.05-1.07; p < 0.00001). A subgroup analysis based on cancer type demonstrated that lung, head and neck, breast, esophagus, colon, prostate, hematologic, liver, gynecologic, stomach, brain, bladder, bone and soft tissue, and mixed type cancers were significantly associated with mortality risk; however, melanoma and pancreatic cancer were not significantly associated with mortality risk. Additionally, global QOL was associated with mortality risk at all timepoints (pretreatment, posttreatment, and palliative phase); pretreatment QOL had the largest impact, followed by posttreatment QOL. CONCLUSION These findings provide evidence that QOL is associated with mortality risk in patients with cancer at any timepoint. These results indicate the importance of evaluating the QOL and supportive interventions to improve QOL in any phase.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although many studies have explored the correlation between quality of life and survival, none have reported this relationship for specific cancers assessed at distinct time points. This meta-analysis aimed to investigate the impact of pretreatment Global Quality of Life (QOL) and functioning QOL, including physical, social, role, emotional, and cognitive QOLs, on mortality risk in patients with lung cancer. METHODS A literature search was conducted across the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), Scopus, and PubMed databases for articles published between their inception and December 2022. Subsequently, 11 studies were selected based on predefined eligibility criteria to investigate the relationship between pretreatment QOLs and mortality risk in patients with lung cancer. RESULTS Pretreatment global, physical, social, role, and emotional QOLs were significantly associated with mortality risk as follows: Global QOL (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.08 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.03-1.13); Physical QOL (HR = 1.04 95% CI = 1.02-1.05); Social QOL (HR = 1.02 95% CI = 1.01-1.03; Role QOL (HR = 1.01 95% CI = 1.01-1.02); Emotional QOL (HR = 1.01 95% CI = 1.00-1.03). CONCLUSIONS These findings underscore the importance of early QOL assessment after diagnosis as well as early provision of physical, social, and psychological support accommodating each patient's demands. Abstract
Purpose This qualitative study explores the meaning of life and end-of-life coping strategies among patients in China with advanced lung cancer. Methods We conducted in-depth interviews with 21 hospitalized patients with advanced lung cancer and analysed the data using the 7-step Colaizzi method. Results The analysis revealed themes in patients’ experiences and feelings about living with a terminal illness. These include: 1) The core of the meaning of life is “self-iteration,” which includes self-recognition and cherishing life; 2) The existence form of the meaning of life is “yu-wei,” including self-reliance and altruism; 3) The meaning of life is embodied in three levels: the past, present, and future. The past includes gratitude, guilt and remorse, and avoidance; the present includes using the support system, positive response, independence, and integrity; the future includes accompanying relatives, preparing for death, living a high quality of life, and worrying. Conclusion Meaning of life is a multidimensional and diverse concept among patients with advanced lung cancer. Medical care providers and family members can provide targeted professional guidance and psychological support according to patients’ characteristics to help them discover their meaning of life, improve their quality of life, and achieve a positive end-of-life perspective.

Abstract
Purpose: Radiation pneumonitis (RP) frequently occurs during a treatment course of chest radiotherapy, which significantly reduces the clinical outcome and efficacy of radiotherapy. The ability to easily predict RP before radiotherapy would allow this disease to be avoided. Methods and Materials: This study recruited 48 lung cancer patients requiring chest radiotherapy. For each participant, RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) was performed on a peripheral blood sample before radiotherapy. The RNA-Seq data was then integrated into a genome-scale flux analysis to develop an RP scoring system for predicting the probability of occurrence of RP. Meanwhile, the clinical information and radiation dosimetric parameters of this cohort were collected for analysis of any statistical associations between these parameters and RP. A non-parametric rank sum test showed no significant difference between the predicted results from the RP score system and the clinically observed occurrence of RP in this cohort. Results: The results of the univariant analysis suggested that the tumor stage, exposure dose, and bilateral lung dose of V5 and V20 were significantly associated with the occurrence of RP. The results of the multivariant analysis suggested that the exposure doses of V5 and V20 were independent risk factors associated with RP and a level of RP ≥ 2, respectively. Thus, our results indicate that our RP scoring system could be applied to accurately predict the risk of RP before radiotherapy because the scores were highly consistent with the clinically observed occurrence of RP. Conclusion: Compared with the standard statistical methods, this genome-scale flux-based scoring system is more accurate, straightforward, and economical, and could therefore be of great significance when making clinical decisions for chest radiotherapy.

Abstract
Simple Summary There is a paucity of literature on the association between health-related quality-of-life (HRQOL) measures and survival outcomes among patients with early-stage non-small-cell lung cancer following stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT). To address this knowledge gap, we performed a secondary analysis of a prospective randomized clinical trial using principal component analysis (PCA). A total of 70 patients were enrolled and completed HRQOL questionnaires prior to and 3 months after SBRT. Using PCA, one of the eigenvectors, PC1, incorporated changes in global health status, functional HRQOL performance, and symptom burden, and it was associated with progression-free survival and overall survival outcomes. Changes in HRQOL measures based on PCA may help identify a subgroup of high-risk patients, and further studies would be warranted to tailor potential additional interventions in this subgroup to improve their outcomes. Abstract The association between HRQOL metrics and survival has not been studied in early stage non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients undergoing SBRT. The cohort was derived via a post-hoc analysis of a prospective randomized clinical trial examining definitive SBRT for peripheral, early-stage NSCLC with a single or multi-fraction regimen. Patients completed HRQOL questionnaires prior to and 3 months after treatment. Using principal component analysis (PCA), changes in each HRQOL scale following treatment were reduced to two eigenvectors, PC1 and PC2. Cox regression was employed to analyze associations with survival-based endpoints. A total of 70 patients (median age 75.6 years; median follow-up 41.1 months) were studied. HRQOL and symptom comparisons at baseline and 3 months were vastly unchanged except for improved coughing (p = 0.02) and pain in the chest at 3 months (p = 0.033). PC1 and PC2 explained 21% and 9% of variance, respectively. When adjusting for covariates, PC1 was significantly correlated with progression-free (PFS) (HR = 0.78, 95% CI 0.67–0.92, p = 0.003) and overall survival (OS) (HR = 0.76, 95% CI 0.46, p = 0.041). Changes in global health status, functional HRQOL performance, and/or symptom burden as described by PC1 values are significantly associated with PFS and OS. The PC1 quartile may facilitate the identification of at-risk patients for additional interventions.

Abstract
The main purpose of this study was to investigate current state of constipation for lung cancer (LC) patients receiving platinum-based chemotherapy. The relationships between social demography, clinical variables, psychological status, and constipation were analyzed. In addition, quality of life (QoL) in LC patients with constipation was also analyzed. One hundred LC patients participated in this cross-sectional study. Under the guidance of the researchers, Functional Living Index-Emesis, Piper Fatigue Scale, Patient Health Questionnaire, Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7, European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) QLQ-C30 (version 3.0), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, General Well-being Scale, Social Support Rate Scale, General Self-Efficacy Scale, and other related questionnaires were completed. The result showed the symptom of constipation was observed in 41 (41%) LC patients. The occurrence and development of constipation were associated with gender, food intake, exercise, nausea, fatigue, anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, and happiness. The study also found patients with constipation had significant lower QoL scores, especially the score in the general state. Constipation was very common in LC patients undergoing platinum-based chemotherapy. Reduced food intake and fatigue were the independent factors. Constipation significantly affects the QoL of the patients. Therefore, more attention should be paid to the risk factors of constipation in LC patients undergoing platinum-based chemotherapy, the earlier intervention was done to these patients, the better to improve their QoL.
