Lifestyle factors, physical health, and life satisfaction under different changes in depressive symptoms among Chinese community-dwelling older adults: A longitudinal analysis

BACKGROUND

The study aims to investigate the long-term impact of lifestyle-related factors and physical health on life satisfaction and depressive symptoms among Chinese community-dwelling older adults.

METHODS

Using data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), the analytic sample of this study included 1,068 older adults who had participated in the surveys in both 2011 and 2018. Multivariate regression was employed to analyze both cross-sectional and longitudinal relationships between lifestyle-related factors, physical health, and subjective well-being - specifically depressive symptoms and life satisfaction. Additionally, the model tested how these factors correlate with life satisfaction across different groups of depressive symptom changes among older adults, categorized as not at risk of depression, intermittent depression, and chronic depression.

RESULTS

Multimorbidity was significantly related to baseline and follow-up depressive risk in older adults. Shorter sleep duration was associated with baseline depression risk. Current alcohol drinkers reported significantly more severe depressive symptoms than non-drinkers. At baseline, current smokers were more likely to have a lower degree of life satisfaction than nonsmokers. Among older adults with chronic depression at the 7-year follow-up, former smokers tended to have lower life satisfaction than nonsmokers.

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings identified drinking alcohol and having a shorter sleep duration as modifiable lifestyle-related risk factors for late-life depression and smoking as a detrimental factor for life satisfaction in older Chinese adults. Multimorbidity was a significant predictor of more depressive symptoms. Our findings have implications for future psychosocial interventions that target the alleviation of depressive symptoms and the promotion of life satisfaction in older Chinese people based on their different long-term mental and physical health conditions.

The role of marriage in the life satisfaction and mortality association at older ages: age and sex differences

OBJECTIVES

Although life satisfaction (LS) could reduce mortality risk of older adults, whether the LS-mortality link is consistent in older adults with different marital status is largely unknown. In this study, we examine (1) how the LS-mortality association at older ages varies by marital status and marital quality, and (2) whether the role of marriage in the LS-mortality link differs between young-old (ages 65-79) and oldest-old (ages 80+) ages and between men and women in mainland China.

METHODS

We used five waves of data from a nationally representative survey in mainland China and applied the multilevel random effect of survival analysis to examine the LS-mortality association in Chinese older adults by marital status, controlling for a wide set of covariates.

RESULTS

First, the protective effect of LS on mortality was valid in older men regardless of their marital status, whereas the protective effect was only valid in currently-not-married older women. Second, for a good marriage, LS significantly reduced mortality risk irrespective of gender and age, while for a poor marriage, LS had no significant association with mortality of older adults. Third, the LS-mortality association seemed to be stronger in the oldest-old than in the young-old irrespective of their marital status.

CONCLUSION

Given the pivotal role of spouse in daily life, the society should create an age-friendly social environment for re-marriage among older adults who wish to get re-married, while highlighting and advocating the importance of good marriage in determining healthy aging, and design various policies to improve the LS of older people to reduce their mortality risk.

Television watching, reading, cognition, depression and life satisfaction among middle-aged and older populations: A group-based trajectory modelling analysis of national data

This retrospective cohort study aimed to identify heterogeneous cognition, depression, and life satisfaction trajectory groups, and to examine the independent contributions of watching television and reading to these trajectories among middle-aged and older adults. A sample was taken from the Taiwan Longitudinal Study on Aging (TLSA) with measures of cognition, depression, life satisfaction, watching television, and reading during 12 years of follow-up (N = 4440). Group-based trajectory models and multinomial logistic regressions were used. The findings showed that the cohort was separated into three global cognition groups of low-cognition (n = 376), declining-cognition (n = 805), and maintained-cognition (n = 2718); three episodic memory groups of high-declining (n = 540), middle-stable (n = 2066), and improving groups (n = 1293); three depression groups of low-to-low (n = 2571), median-to-high (n = 960), and high-to-high groups (n = 368); and three life satisfaction groups of low- (n = 1133), middle- (n = 977), and high-level groups (n = 1789). Also, the findings demonstrated that after adjusting for covariates, those who did not watch television or read at the baseline had independently significantly increased odds of having lower global cognitive function, higher depression, and lower life satisfaction over time versus those who watched television or read almost every day. Based on the findings obtained, group-based trajectories of cognition, depression, and life satisfaction scores identified distinct subgroups among TLSA participants. Moreover, the findings suggest that healthcare providers need to develop more targeted population interventions to ensure successful aging. Healthcare providers can encourage older adults, particularly new retirees, to participate in leisure activities (i.e., watching television and reading) to reduce prevalence rates of cognitive impairment and depression.

Does the psychological variables predict life satisfaction and purpose in life in brazilian elderly?

Aims: the present study aimed to investigate the association between indicatives of stress, anxiety and depression with life satisfaction and purpose in life among Brazilian older adults.Methods: this cross-sectional study was conducted with 654 Brazilian older adults who responded the Life Satisfaction Scale, Purpose in Life Scale, Perceived Stress Scale, Geriatric Anxiety Inventory and the Geriatric Depression Scale. Data were analyzed through independent t-test, Cohen’s D, Pearson Correlations and Multivariate Regression Analysis (p<0.05).Results: results indicated slightly higher levels of stress and anxiety for women when compared to men (p<0.05); indicatives of stress, anxiety and depression were inversely correlated to life satisfaction and purpose (r = -0.19 to -0.44; p<0.05); stress (β=-0.29) and depression (β=-0.36) were significant predictors of life satisfaction (R2=0.31; p<0.01), and life purpose (R2=0.18; p<0.01) was predicted by stress (β=-0.15), anxiety (β=0.10) and depression (β=-0.39).Conclusion: It can be concluded that stress and depression are significant factors hindering older adults’ satisfaction and purpose in life.

Life satisfaction and health self-assessment of older adults assisted through home care

OBJECTIVE

to identify sociodemographic and health characteristics according to age groups and to analyze the association between self-assessed health status and satisfaction with regular/bad life with sociodemographic characteristics, global functioning and falls of older adults linked to home care within the primary health care network.

METHOD

cross-sectional study with 124 older adults, conducted using home interviews. A sociodemographic data and health status questionnaire was used, together with Barthel Index, Lawton Instrumental Activities of Daily Living Scale (IADL), the Mini-Mental State Examination, the Geriatric Depression Scale and the Timed Up and Go Test. Bivariate and multivariate analyses (Poisson regression) were applied.

RESULTS

there was a predominance of female octogenarians. Self-assessment of regular/bad health was associated with mild (p=0.002) and severe (p<0.001) depressive symptoms. Satisfaction with regular/bad life was associated with fear of falling (p=0.019) and with mild (p<0.001) and severe (p<0.001) depressive symptoms.

CONCLUSION

depressive symptoms were associated with a worse life satisfaction and health self-assessment.

Gender Differences in Factors Affecting Life Satisfaction of the Elderly with Multimorbidity in Korea

To enhance the life satisfaction of the elderly with multimorbidity, it is necessary to investigate the relevant factors and to examine the differences in factors according to gender. The aim of this study was to identify factors affecting life satisfaction of the elderly with multimorbidity in the community by gender in Korea. We analyzed data from 2140 participants with multimorbidity who were aged 65 or older and participated in the Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing (KLoSA) in 2016. A multivariate linear regression analysis was conducted to examine the factors affecting life satisfaction among male and female older participants with multimorbidity. The most common pattern of multimorbidity of women was hypertension and arthritis/rheumatism, while that of men was hypertension and diabetes mellitus. Some factors, such as depression, exercise, and number of chronic diseases, affected both male and female participants, but others related to life satisfaction varied by gender. Therefore, it is necessary to consider the characteristics of multiple chronic diseases, and policy support should be provided in consideration of gender differences to improve the life satisfaction of the elderly.

The U Shape of Happiness Across the Life Course: Expanding the Discussion

The notion of a U shape in happiness-that well-being is highest for people in their 20s, decreases to its nadir in midlife, and then rises into old age-has captured the attention of the media, which often cite it as evidence for a midlife crisis. We argue that support for the purported U shape is not as robust and generalizable as is often assumed and present our case with the following arguments: (a) Cross-sectional studies are inadequate for drawing conclusions about within-person change in happiness across the life span; (b) cross-sectional evidence with respect to the ubiquity and robustness of the U shape in general levels of happiness and life satisfaction is mixed; (c) longitudinal support for the U shape in happiness and life satisfaction is also mixed; (d) longitudinal research on subjective indicators of well-being other than general levels of happiness and life satisfaction challenges the U shape; (e) when asked to reflect on their lives, older adults tend to recall midlife as one of the more positive periods; and (f) a focus on a single trajectory of well-being is of limited scientific and applied value because it obscures the diversity in pathways throughout life as well as its sources. Understanding happiness across the life course and moving the research field forward require a multidisciplinary, collaborative approach.

A Model of Aging Perception in Iranian Elders With Effects of Hope, Life Satisfaction, and Socioeconomic Status: A Path Analysis

BACKGROUND

Aging perception plays a central role in the experience of healthy aging by older people. Research identified that factors such as hope, life satisfaction, and socioeconomic status influence the perception of aging in older populations.

OBJECTIVE

This study sought to test a hypothetical model to quantitatively evaluate the relationship between hope, life satisfaction, and socioeconomic status with aging perception.

DESIGN

A cross-sectional design was used with 504 older aged participants who live in Qazvin, Iran. Data were collected using the Barker's Aging Perception Questionnaire, Life Satisfaction Index-Z, and Herth Hope Index.

RESULTS

The results of path analysis showed that hope was the most important factor affecting aging perception. Results drawn from correlation analysis indicated that there was a positive significant correlation ( r = .383, p < .001) between hope and aging perception. Further analysis found that hope had the strongest impact on aging perception compared with the other variables analyzed (e.g., life satisfaction and socioeconomic status).

CONCLUSIONS

A model of aging perception in Iranian elders is presented. The findings suggested that hope had a significant and positive impact on aging perception. Implications for clinical practice and research are discussed.
