The Relationship between Childhood Abuse and Suicidal Ideation among Chinese College Students: The Mediating Role of Core Self-Evaluation and Negative Emotions

Childhood abuse is a significant risk factor for suicidal ideation. However, the underlying mediation mechanism necessitates further exploration. This study investigated the mediating role of core self-evaluation and negative emotions in the relationship between childhood abuse and suicide ideation in young adults. A sample of 3103 college students from 11 universities across 8 provinces in China was analyzed. Childhood abuse, core self-evaluation, negative emotions, and suicidal ideation were assessed using the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ-CF), Core Self-Evaluation Scale, Affect Scale, and Beck Suicidal Ideation Scale (BSI-CV), respectively. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS 19.0 and SPSS Macro Process. We found that high scores for childhood abuse were associated with elevated levels of suicidal ideation, whereas low scores for core self-evaluation were closely linked to heightened levels of negative emotions and suicidal ideation. Furthermore, core self-evaluation and negative emotions mediated the relationship between childhood abuse and suicidal ideation through three significant paths. The results demonstrate that childhood abuse can directly impact suicidal ideation in young adulthood and indirectly influence suicidal ideation by affecting core self-evaluation and negative emotions. They suggest that addressing core self-evaluation and negative emotions in individuals who have experienced childhood abuse may help prevent or treat suicidal ideation.

Psychological mechanisms of English academic stress and academic burnout: the mediating role of rumination and moderating effect of neuroticism

Introduction

Academic stress is a significant and prevalent phenomenon among college students. According to the Demands-Resources Model, when individuals are unable to cope with stress that exceeds their capacity, burnout may occur. Although English courses hold a significant position in university education, there has been limited research on the mechanisms linking English academic stress to English academic burnout.

Methods

This study recruited 1,130 undergraduate students taking English courses. Participants completed online questionnaires assessing English academic stress, rumination, English academic burnout, and neuroticism traits. A moderated mediation model was constructed to examine the relationship among these variables.

Results

The results indicate that (1) Rumination serves as a mediator in the relationship between English academic stress and burnout; (2) neuroticism significantly moderates the pathway between English academic stress and rumination. Specifically, students with high neuroticism tendencies are more prone to developing rumination when faced with high levels of English academic stress.

Conclusion

These findings offer valuable insights into the psychological mechanisms underlying the association between English learning stress and academic burnout. They emphasize the importance of addressing rumination as a mediator and considering individuals' levels of neuroticism in interventions aimed at preventing and alleviating academic burnout among university students.

Core self-evaluation and innovative behavior: mediating effect of error orientation and self-efficacy of nurses

Background

Innovation plays a crucial role in advancing nursing and healthcare. Despite its significance, there is a paucity of research examining the interplay among nursing innovative behavior, core self-evaluation, error orientation, and self-efficacy. This study, grounded in Bandura's social cognitive theory, seeks to not only investigate the influence of core self-evaluation on nurses' innovative behavior but also to elucidate the mediating roles of error orientation and self-efficacy within this relationship. By addressing these dynamics, the research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the factors shaping nurses' innovative behaviors and contribute to the broader discourse on enhancing healthcare practices.

Design

A cross-sectional study using an online questionnaire.

Setting

Participants were recruited from 23 hospitals in 6 provinces and 1 municipality directly under the central government in China, namely Zhejiang, Anhui, Jiangxi, Guangdong, Hebei, Henan, and Shanghai.

Participants

A total of 741 nurses enrolled in the study.

Methods

The participants completed the nurse innovative behavior scale, the core self-evaluation scale, the error orientation questionnaire, and the self-efficacy scale online in 2023. SPSS and AMOS were used for data analysis. The reporting followed the STROBE checklist.

Results

A total of 706 valid questionnaires were collected. A positive core self-evaluation was associated with more innovative behavior, and this relation was partially mediated by error orientation and self-efficacy to avoid failure. Core self-evaluation, error orientation and self-efficacy of nurses had a positive predictive effect on innovation behavior, with the path coefficients at 0.09, 0.23, and 0.39, respectively.

Conclusion

Our study complements the evidence on the mechanism of action between the core self-evaluation and innovative behavior. Our findings have important clinical implications for promoting innovative behavior in nurses.

Social Identity, Core Self-Evaluation, School Adaptation, and Mental Health Problems in Migrant Children in China: A Chain Mediation Model

(1) Background: The present study investigated the relationships between social identity, core self-evaluation, school adaptation, and mental health problems in migrant children, and the mechanism underlying these relationships; (2) Methods: The participants were migrant middle school students in China. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS version 26. A survey comprising the social identity scale, core self-evaluation scale, school adaptation scale, and mental health scale MMHI-60 was deployed; (3) Results: Findings indicated a significant and negative association between social identity and mental health problems, and such an association was sequentially mediated by core self-evaluation and school adaptation. Furthermore, core self-evaluation and school adaptation played a chain mediation role between social identity and migrant children's mental health problems; (4) Conclusions: It is crucial to improve social identity, core self-evaluation, and school adaptation to reduce mental health problems among this population. Therefore, the research results provide a new direction for promoting the development of mental health education for migrant workers and their children in China.

The impact of consumer confusion on the service recovery effect of Online Travel Agency (OTA)

This study carried out a scenario experiment in Guangxi, China, and used a questionnaire to obtain the research data of the subjects to explore the service recovery effect of local online travel agencies (OTAs) from the perspective of consumer psychology. The empirical results show that consumer confusion will significantly worsen negative word-of-mouth, and negative word-of-mouth will reduce their repurchase intention. In the above empirical impact relationship research, it shows that negative word-of-mouth and consumer forgiveness play a mediating effect and a moderating effect respectively. Because this study is conducive to responding to and solving the new scenario and problems in the practice of OTA services. It will help to improve the risk resistance of OTA enterprises by providing effective service recovery strategies for these enterprises.
