Calixarene-Based Miniaturized Solid-Phase Extraction of Trace Triazine Herbicides from the Honey and Milk Samples

In-situ growth of a spherical vinyl-functionalized covalent organic framework as stationary phase for capillary electrochromatography-mass spectrometry analysis

Column technology is an important part in capillary electrochromatographic science. Developing novel stationary phase with high separation efficiency and high loading capacity is an essential work. In this work, a novel spherical vinyl-functionalized covalent-organic framework (COF-V) was synthesized at room temperature and firstly employed as stationary phase for CEC-MS analysis. The COF-V based CEC column was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The results proved the successful modification of COF-V. The COF-V based column possesses the advantages like strong electroosmotic flow, high separation efficiency and high loading capacity. The CEC column showed powerful separation selectivity to several kinds of compounds, and the highest column efficiency (theoretical plates, N) was over 1.4 × 10⁵ plates·m^-1 for methylbenzene. Besides, the COF-V modified column exhibited excellent repeatability and stability. The relative standard deviations (RSDs) of retention times for intra-day (n = 5), inter-day (n = 3) runs and column-to-column (n = 3) were all less than 2.1%. Hence, the COF-V modified column was successfully applied in CEC-MS for determination of antiepileptic drug, triazine herbicides and active ingredients in traditional Chinese medicine.

Application of an in-situ formulated magnetic deep eutectic solvent for the determination of triazine herbicides in rice

In this work, a rapid, convenient, sensitive, and cost-effective in-situ formed magnetic deep eutectic solvent based on a dispersive liquid-liquid extraction method was developed for the determination of triazine herbicides in rice. A novel tetrabutylammonium chloride (TBAC) based magnetic deep eutectic solvent (MDES), [TBAC/ethylene glycol][FeCl₄] was generated by means of an simple in-situ reaction of the deep eutectic solvent (DES) with iron chloride in the sample solution. The solvent which has high affinity for target analytes and magnetic ability was successfully employed as an extraction solvent and simplified both the extraction and separation procedure. A series of parameters influencing the extraction efficiency were investigated. Under optimal conditions, calibration curves for the target triazine herbicides were obtained in the ranges of 5-1000 ng g^-1, with correlation coefficients greater than 0.9910. The limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) were in the range of 1.49-3.10 ng g^-1 and 4.96-10.34 ng g^-1, respectively. The precision of intra- and inter-day were under 6.2% and 9.6%, respectively, and the precision between laboratories were lower than 7.5%. The accuracy of the method varied from 84.9 to 117.5%. Furthermore, the method showed satisfactory matrix effect and robustness. These results indicate that the technique is suitable for rice sample analysis.

On-line concentration of triazine herbicides in microemulsion electrokinetic chromatography by electrokinetic injection assisted micelle to cyclodextrin stacking

A fast, simple, environmentally friendly and sensitive on-line concentration method using microemulsion system as background solution (BGS) was developed for the trace detection of propazine, atrazine, simazine in food samples. The electrokinetic injection assisted micelle to cyclodextrin stacking (MCDS) was designed for the enrichment of target compounds. The factors affected enrichment performance, such as the kind of CDs, the amount of CDs, the concentration of methanol in BGS, the concentration of micelle in sample matrix, the concentration of phosphoric acid in BGS and the sample injection time were optimized. The optimized electrophoretic condition was obtained as following: 50 mM α-CD, 20 mM SDS in sample matrix., 80 mM PA and 20% MeOH (v/v) in BGS, sample solution by electrokinetic injection at -10 kV for 80 s. Under the optimized conditions described above, the linear range was 0.1-20 ug/mL with a good linear relationship with a correlation coefficient (r) ≥ 0.9985. The SEFs for the propazine, atrazine, simazine were found to be 123, 85 and 62 respectively. The proposed MCDS-MEEKC method provided an efficient method for trace analysis of triazine herbicides in honey and dendrobium officinale samples.

Design of a Thiosemicarbazide-Functionalized Calix[4]arene Ligand and Related Transition Metal Complexes: Synthesis, Characterization, and Biological Studies

In this study, we synthesized a new thiosemicarbazide-functionalized calix[4]arene L and its Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, and Zn2+ transition metal complexes. For characterization several techniques were employed: Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR), 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), 13C-NMR, 15N-NMR, correlation spectroscopy (COZY), nuclear Overhauser enhancement spectroscopy (NOESY), electrospray ionization (ESI)-mass spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and elemental analysis. To explore the capability of the thiosemicarbazide function hosted on a calix[4]arene scaffold for growth inhibition of bacteria, fungi, and cancerous tumor cells, a series of biological evaluations were performed. For L, the antimicrobial tests revealed a higher antibacterial activity against gram-positive Bacillus subtilis and a lower activity against gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa), whereas the gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus shows resistance. All examined metal derivatives show an enhancement of the antibacterial activity against gram-negative E. coli bacteria, with a more significant improvement for the Ni2+ and Zn2+ complexes. MTT assays showed a considerable in vitro anticancer activity of Co2+, Ni2+, and Cu2+ complexes against Saos-2 bone cancer cell lines. The activity is ascribable to the inorganic ions rather than calixarene ligand. Hemolysis assay results demonstrated that all compounds have high blood compatibility.

Analytical methods to analyze pesticides and herbicides

Presented in this paper is an annual review of literatures published in 2018 on topics relating to analytical methods for pesticides and herbicides. According to the different techniques, this review is divided into six sections, including extraction methods; chromatographic or mass spectrometric techniques; electrochemical techniques; spectrophotometric techniques; chemiluminescence and fluorescence methods; and biochemical assays. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Totally 134 relevant research articles are summarized. The review is divided into six parts according to the techniques. Chromatographic and mass spectrometric methods are the most widely used.
