Electron Delocalization and Transfer Across Polyoxometalates-Based Subnanomaterials in Catalytic Reactions

Due to their identical building blocks and high surface-to-volume ratio, subnanomaterials exhibit significant properties compared to their bulk nanomaterial counterparts. The interactions between these building blocks can result in either equal or unequal sharing of electrons, leading to electron transfer in heterojunctions or electron delocalization within symmetric structures. Clusters, possessing electronic properties akin to atoms, can serve as reservoirs of electrons to stabilize crucial intermediates in catalytic reactions. This perspective provides a novel understanding of well-defined subnanomaterials with distinct architectures, such as cluster-based constructions and co-assembled heterojunctions, emphasizing the relationship between electronic structures and catalytic properties. The objective is to provide novel perspectives on the realm of subnanomaterials and cluster-based architectures.

Precise Assembly of Polyoxometalates at Single-cluster Levels

Polyoxometalate (POM) clusters with atomic precision structures are promising candidates construct functional nanomaterials via self-assembly. Non-covalent interactions at molecular levels can govern the self-assembly of POM clusters, for which the precise control of POM-based assemblies can be realized at single-cluster levels. This mini-review focuses on the synthesis and properties of POM-based nanostructures, including amphiphilic POM assemblies and co-assemblies of POM clusters and other subnanometer building blocks. Several synthetic strategies have been developed for rational control of POM-based assemblies in terms of morphologies, compositions and properties. 1D subnanometer POM assemblies demonstrate remarkable enhanced mechanical properties due to the topological interactions between nanowires and surroundings. The in-depth understanding of POM-based assemblies may help in the design of functional nanomaterials in fundamental perspectives and applications.

Fabricating sub-nanometer materials through cluster assembly

The self-assembly of clusters provides a feasible approach for the bottom-up fabrication of functional materials with tailored properties. Sub-nanometer cluster assembly with a well-defined construction presents a precisely controllable structure and extraordinary properties, which provides an ideal model for the investigation of structures and properties at the molecular level. Non-covalent interactions between clusters may dominate the assembly behavior, appearing as tunable structures different from their nano-counterparts. Interactions between clusters and their superatom orbitals can significantly influence the electronic structures, because of which exceptional properties may emerge. In this paper, recent progress on cluster-based assemblies is introduced, including sub-nanometer building blocks of noble metal and polyoxometalate (POM) clusters. The structures, formation mechanism and properties of these cluster assemblies are discussed from experimental and theoretical aspects. This perspective aims to provide a new insight into the design and manufacture of sub-nanometer materials based on clusters.

Amoeba-inspired magnetic microgel assembly assisted by engineered dextran-binding protein for vaccination against life-threatening systemic infection

Vaccination is critical for population protection from pathogenic infections. However, its efficiency is frequently compromised by a failure of antigen retention and presentation. Herein, we designed a dextran-binding protein DexBP, which is composed of the carbohydrate-binding domains of Trichoderma reesei cellobiohydrolases Cel6A and Cel7A, together with the sequence of the fluorescent protein mCherry. DexBP was further prepared by engineered Escherichia coli cells and grafted to magnetic nanoparticles. The magnetic nanoparticles were integrated with a dextran/poly(vinyl alcohol) framework and a reactive oxygen species-responsive linker, obtaining magnetic polymeric microgels for carrying pathogen antigen. Similar to amoeba aggregation, the microgels self-assembled to form aggregates and further induced dendritic cell aggregation. This step-by-step assembly retained antigens at lymph nodes, promoted antigen presentation, stimulated humoral immunity, and protected the mice from life-threatening systemic infections. This study developed a magnetic microgel-assembling platform for dynamically regulating immune response during protection of the body from dangerous infections.

Degradation and Detection of Endocrine Disruptors by Laccase-Mimetic Polyoxometalates

Endocrine disruptors are newly identified water contaminants and immediately caught worldwide concern. An effort has been made to degrade endocrine disruptors in the water body by relying on laccase-assisted approaches, including laccase-mediated catalytic systems, immobilized laccase catalytic systems, and nano-catalytic systems based on atypical protein enzymes. Analogous to laccases, polyoxometalates (POMs) have a similar size as these enzymes. They are also capable of using oxygen as an electron acceptor, which could assist the removal of endocrine disruptors in water. This perspective begins with a brief introduction to endocrine disruptors and laccases, summarizes current approaches employing laccases, and focuses on the nano-catalytic systems that mimic the function of laccases. Among the inorganic nanoparticles, POMs meet the design requirements and are easy for large-scale production. The catalytic performance of POMs in water treatment is highlighted, and an example of using polyoxovanadates for endocrine disruptor degradation is given at the end of this perspective. Exploring laccase-mimetic POMs will give key insights into the degradation of emergent water contaminants.

Enhanced Immune Responses by Virus-Mimetic Polymeric Nanostructures Against Infectious Diseases

Intermittent outbreaks of global pandemic disease have spurred new sensors and medicines development for the prevention of disease spread. This perspective specifically covers recent advances, challenges, and future directions in virus-mimetic polymeric nanostructures and their application in biological medicines with a special emphasis on subunit vaccine development. With tailorable compositions and properties, polymers facilitate the ingenious design of various polymeric nanostructures. As one type of polymeric nanostructures, virus-mimetic polymeric nanostructures have been developed as an attractive platform for enhanced immune responses, since they combine the merits of polymer nanocores with the biomimetic characteristic of virus which displays multivalent epitopes on their surfaces. This perspective also provides an applicative approach to rationally design virus-mimetic polymeric platforms based on nanostructures that are self-assembled by using polymers as templates and the antigens and metal oxide clusters loaded on their surface to mimic viruses in size and surface antigenicity. Sub-200 nm virus-mimetic polymeric nanostructures are in a relatively lower level of endotoxins and can promote the antigens to elicit potent humoral and cellular immune responses against pathogenic bacteria. The promising development of virus-mimetic polymeric nanostructures will continue to protect human health from common pathogens and emerging infectious threats.
