Abstract
BACKGROUND Prenatal bisphenol exposure has been reported to be associated with lower birth weight and obesity-related indicators in early childhood. These findings warrant an investigation of the relationship between prenatal bisphenol exposure and the dynamic growth of offspring. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship of maternal bisphenol concentration in urine with the body mass index (BMI) growth trajectory of children aged up to two years and to identify the critical exposure periods. METHODS A total of 826 mother-offspring pairs were recruited from Wuhan Children's Hospital between November 2013 and March 2015. Maternal urine samples collected during the first, second, and third trimesters were analyzed for bisphenol A (BPA), bisphenol S, and bisphenol F (BPF) concentrations. Measurements of length and weight were taken at 0, 1, 3, 6, 8, 12, 18, and 24 months. Children's BMI was standardized using the World Health Organization reference, and group-based trajectory modeling was used to identify BMI growth trajectories. The associations between prenatal bisphenol exposure and BMI growth trajectory patterns were assessed using multinomial logistic regression models. RESULTS The BMI growth trajectories of the 826 children were categorized into four patterns: low-stable (n = 134, 16.2%), low-increasing (n = 142, 17.2%), moderate-stable (n = 350, 42.4%), and moderate-increasing (n = 200, 24.2%). After adjusting for potential confounders, we observed that prenatal exposure to BPA during the second trimester [odds ratio (OR) = 2.20, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.09-4.43] and BPF during the third trimester (OR = 3.28, 95% CI = 1.55-6.95) at the highest quartile concentration were associated with an increased likelihood of the low-increasing BMI trajectory. Furthermore, in the subgroup analysis by infant sex, the positive association between the highest quartile of prenatal average urinary BPF concentration during the whole pregnancy and the low-increasing BMI trajectory was found only in girls (OR = 2.82, 95% CI = 1.04-7.68). CONCLUSION Our study findings suggest that prenatal exposure to BPA and BPF (a commonly used substitute for BPA) is associated with BMI growth trajectories in offspring during the first two years, increasing the likelihood of the low-increasing pattern. Abstract
Over the past few decades, the incidence of childhood allergic diseases has increased globally, and their impact on the affected child extends beyond the allergy itself. There is evidence of an association between childhood allergic diseases and the development of neurological disorders. Several studies have shown a correlation between allergic diseases and tic disorders (TD), and allergic diseases may be an important risk factor for TD. Possible factors influencing the development of these disorders include neurotransmitter imbalance, maternal anxiety or depression, gut microbial disorders, sleep disturbances, maternal allergic status, exposure to tobacco, and environmental factors. Moreover, gut microbial disturbances, altered immunological profiles, and DNA methylation in patients with allergic diseases may be potential mechanisms contributing to the development of TD. An in-depth investigation of the relationship between allergic diseases and TD in children will be important for preventing and treating TD.

Abstract
Allergic diseases are showing increasing prevalence in Western societies. They are characterized by a heightened reactivity towards otherwise harmless environmental stimuli. Allergic diseases showing a wide range of severity of symptoms have a significant impact on the quality of life of affected individuals. This study aims to highlight the mechanisms that induce these reactions, how they progress, and which prenatal factors influence their development. Most frequently, the reaction is mediated by immunoglobulin E (IgE) produced by B cells, which binds to the surface of mast cells and basophils and triggers an inflammatory response. The antibody response is triggered by a shift in T-cell immune response. The symptoms often start in early childhood with eczema or atopic dermatitis and progress to allergic asthma in adolescence. An important determinant of allergic diseases seems to be parental, especially maternal history of allergy. Around 30% of children of allergic mothers develop allergic sensitization in childhood. Genes involved in the regulation of the epithelial barrier function and the T-cell response were found to affect the predisposition to developing allergic disorders. Cord blood IgE was found to be a promising predictor of allergic disease development. Fetal B cells produce IgE starting at the 20th gestation week. These fetal B cells could be sensitized together with mast cells by maternal IgE and IgE-allergen complexes crossing the placental barrier via the low-affinity IgE receptor. Various factors were found to facilitate these sensitizations, including pesticides, drugs, exposure to cigarette smoke and maternal uncontrolled asthma. Prenatal exposure to microbial infections and maternal IgG appeared to play a role in the regulation of T-cell response, indicating a protective effect against allergy development. Additional preventive factors were dietary intake of vitamin D and omega 3 fatty acids as well as decreased maternal IgE levels. The effect of exposure to food allergens during pregnancy was inconclusive, with studies having found both sensitizing and protective effects. In conclusion, prenatal factors including genetics, epigenetics and fetal environmental factors have an important role in the development of allergic disorders in later life. Children with a genetic predisposition are at risk when exposed to cigarette smoke as well as increased maternal IgE in the prenatal period. Maternal diet during pregnancy and immunization against certain allergens could help in the prevention of allergy in predisposed children.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The fetal immune system and consequent elevated risk of asthma in childhood may be impacted by maternal anxiety during pregnancy. Limited studies have evaluated whether there was a sensitive period and cumulative effect of the relationship between prenatal anxiety and children's asthma. METHODS 3131 mother-child pairs made up the study's sample from the Ma'anshan Birth Cohort Study in China. Maternal anxiety status was repeated three times using the pregnancy-related anxiety questionnaire in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd trimesters of pregnancy. Diagnostic information on asthma was collected three times at 24, 36, and 48 months of age. RESULTS After adjusting for confounders, children born to mothers with anxiety in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd trimesters of pregnancy all had an elevated risk of total asthma from 12 to 48 months of age. After further adjusting prenatal anxiety in the other trimesters, no association was observed between prenatal anxiety in any trimester and preschoolers' asthma. Children of mothers with persistently high anxiety score trajectory during pregnancy had an elevated risk of total asthma and high prevalence trajectory of asthma. Cumulative effects analysis showed that the more frequent the mother's anxiety, the higher the risk of her offspring developing a high prevalence trajectory of asthma from 12 to 48 months of age. The results of the subgroup analysis by age showed similar associations overall. CONCLUSIONS Maternal antenatal anxiety was associated with an elevated risk of preschool children's asthma, and a possible cumulative effect was observed. Maternal mental health conditions during pregnancy should receive constant attention throughout pregnancy, not just during one period.

Abstract
Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a common atopic disease worldwide, and it was found that babies with constipation in their early life might have an increased risk of atopic diseases, including AR. Furthermore, recent studies also indicate that the maternal gut microbiota may influence babies. Thus, we extended the definition of early life in utero and evaluated the association between maternal constipation and the risk of AR in their babies. Using the Longitudinal Health Insurance Database, a subset of Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database, we identified 102,820 constipated mothers and 102,820 matched controls between 2005 and 2015. Propensity score analysis was used to match birth year, child sex, birth weight, gestational age, mode of delivery, maternal comorbidities, and children antibiotics taken. Multiple Cox regression and subgroup analyzes were conducted to estimate the adjusted hazard ratio of childhood AR. The incidence of childhood AR was 83.47 per 1,000 person-years in constipated mothers. Adjusting children's sex, birth weight, gestational age, mode of delivery, maternal comorbidities, and children antibiotic use, the results showed that the children whose mothers had constipation had a 1.20-fold risk of AR compared to children of mothers without constipation. Maternal constipation was associated with an increased risk of AR. Therefore, it is important to pay close attention to pregnant mothers with constipation.

Abstract
This cohort study sought to investigate the effects of phthalates exposure during pregnancy on offspring asthma and its association with placental stress and inflammatory factor mRNA expression levels. A total of 3474 pregnant women from the China Ma'anshan birth cohort participated in this study. Seven phthalate metabolites were detected in urine samples during pregnancy by solid phase extraction-high-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. Placenta stress and inflammation mRNA expression were assessed by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). Early pregnancy may be the critical period when phthalates exposure increases the risk of asthma in infants and young children, and there is a certain gender difference in the risk of asthma in infants and young children. Moreover, through the placenta stress and inflammatory factor associated with infant asthma found anti-inflammatory factor of interleukin-10 (IL-10) mRNA expression will reduce the risk of 36-month-old male infant asthma. The expression of interleukin-4(IL-4) and macrophage (M2) biomarker cluster of differentiation 206(CD206) mRNA reduced the risk of asthma in 18-month-old female infants. Placental stress and inflammatory response were analyzed using mediating effects. Tumor necrosis factor-α (TNFα) showed a complete mediating effect between mono-benzyl phthalate (MBzP) exposure in early pregnancy and asthma in 12-month-old males, and IL-10 also showed a complete mediating effect between mono-n-butyl phthalate (MBP) exposure in early and late pregnancy and asthma in 36-month-old males. In summary, exposure to phthalates during pregnancy may contribute to the development of asthma in infants, which may be associated with placental stress and inflammation.

Abstract
According to the "fetal origin of disease" hypothesis, air pollution exposure in pregnancy may play an important role in stimulating the early programming of asthma and allergies. However, previous studies reported inconsistent findings. The aim of this meta-analysis was to provide higher grade evidence and quantitatively analyze the link between prenatal exposure to outdoor air pollutants and childhood asthma and wheezing. Databases (Web of Science and PubMed) were extensively searched for articles published from the start of the database to September 15, 2021. Either random-effect model or fixed-effect model was used to estimate the disease-specific relative risks (RR) with the corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) to estimate the association. Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Score (NOS) was used to assess the quality of studies. This study finally included 13 cohort studies, and the findings showed that NO2 and SO2 exposure during entire pregnancy was significantly associated with wheezing (RR = 1.032, 95% CI: 1.000, 1.066) and asthma (RR = 1.114, 95% CI: 1.066, 1.164), respectively. Further analyses showed that PM2.5 were positively associated with asthma in the second (RR = 1.194, 95% CI: 1.143, 1.247) and third trimester (RR = 1.050, 95% CI: 1.007, 1.094), while NO2 (RR = 1.060, 95% CI: 1.021, 1.101) and SO2 (RR = 1.067, 95% CI: 1.013, 1.123) were shown positively associated with asthma only in the second trimester. The relationship between wheezing and outdoor air pollutants was not significant in any of the pregnancy subgroups. This study suggests that prenatal exposure of outdoor air pollution may increase the asthma and wheezing risk in the offspring and that the second trimester may be a sensitive period for air pollution exposure. But the interpretation of the causal association is hampered by limited number of studies on dose response.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Maternal exposure to antibiotics has been linked to the development of pediatric asthma. However, the impact of the timing of exposure is unclear. We aimed to explore if the risk of pediatric asthma varies with trimester-specific exposure to antibiotics through a systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS PubMed, Embase, ScienceDirect, CENTRAL, and Google Scholar databases were searched for studies reporting an association between trimester-specific maternal exposure to antibiotics and risk of asthma in the offspring. RESULTS Eleven studies were included. The total sample size of the included studies was 2,160,216. Meta-analysis revealed a statistically significant increased risk of asthma with first (RR: 1.13 95% CI: 1.10, 1.17 I2 = 59% p < 0.00001), second (RR: 1.14 95% CI: 1.07, 1.21 I2 = 92% p < 0.0001), and third (RR: 1.14 95% CI: 1.08, 1.20 I2=86% p < 0.00001) trimester exposure of antibiotics. The results were stable on sensitivity analysis. On subgroup analysis, we noted that the association for the first and second trimester was significant for studies on children >5 years but not for those on children <5 years of age. The certainty of evidence based on GRADE was low. CONCLUSION Our results indicate that antibiotics administered during any trimester of pregnancy lead to an increased risk of childhood asthma. The overall risk is small and could be due to confounding. Further studies rigorously adjusting for important confounding variables are needed for stronger evidence.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Childhood asthma has substantial effects on children's health. It is important to identify influencing factors in early life in the development of childhood asthma. We aim to evaluate the effects of early-life factors and indoor environmental exposure on childhood asthma in Chongqing, China. METHOD We designed a case-control study to enrol children with asthma aged 3 to < 14 years old and controls in Chongqing, China. The "Children's Early Life and Indoor Environment Survey" was used to collect the early-life factors and indoor environmental exposure of foetuses in utero and of infants during the first 3 years of life. A multivariate logistic regression model was used to evaluate the association between independent variables and childhood asthma and the interaction of early-life factors and environmental exposure. RESULTS A total of 160 asthma cases and 247 controls were included in this study. The mean ages of the cases and controls were 5.53 ± 1.88 and 5.72 ± 2.34 years, respectively (P = 0.192). Early-life factors and indoor environmental exposure were independently associated with childhood asthma. Infectious diseases of the respiratory system in children under 3 years old [adjusted odds ratio (OR) = 5.76, 95% confidence interval (CI) 2.49-13.30], bedroom air conditioner use (adjusted OR = 4.61, 95% CI 1.45-14.64), and bedroom dampness/mould (adjusted OR = 2.98, 95% CI 1.54-5.75) ranked as the three most significant exposures associated with the risk of childhood asthma. Other factors associated with an increased risk of childhood asthma included second-hand smoke exposure in early life (adjusted OR = 1.93, 95% CI 1.24-3.00), neonatal pneumonia (adjusted OR = 1.90, 95% CI 1.05-3.42) and maternal allergic diseases during pregnancy (adjusted OR = 2.13, 95% CI 1.10-4.10). The interaction effects of child second-hand smoke exposure with other covariates were not found to be statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS Early-life factors and indoor environmental exposure are closely related to childhood asthma in Chongqing, China. Further interventions and management in the early life of children should be considered to prevent and control childhood asthma in Chongqing and similar cities.
