Different works have reported earlier permanent teething in obese/overweight children compared to control ones. In contrast, others have reported a delayed permanent teething in undernutrition/underweight children compared to control one. It has been reported that becoming overweight or suffering from obesity can increase gingival pro-inflammatory drive and can affect orthodontic treatment (among other complications). In this sense, little is known about the molecular mechanisms affecting dental eruption timing. Leptin and adiponectin are adipocytokines signaling molecules released in overweight and underweight conditions, respectively. These adipocytokines can modulate osteocyte, odontoblast, and cementoblast activity, even regulating dental lamina initiation. The present review focuses on the molecular approach wherein leptin and adiponectin act as modulators of Runt-related transcription factor 2 (Runx 2) gene regulating dental eruption timing.

Evaluation of the Relationship between the BMI and the Sequence and Chronology of Eruption in Permanent Dentition in Spanish Population

The aim was to analyze the relationship between BMI (body mass index) and the sequence and chronology of the eruption of permanent teeth in a sample of Spanish children. Methods: The study design was descriptive, cross-sectional, observational, and epidemiological. Patients of pediatric age were included. Emerged teeth, and patient’s age, race, and sex were recorded. The nutritional status of the child was assessed by calculating the BMI, according to the WHO parameters. Statistical analysis was carried out with a confidence interval of 95%. A prediction model with logistic regression models was obtained. Results: A total of 725 pediatric patients between 4 and 14 years old were analyzed. BMI acts as a predictor variable for eruption symmetry, as it was most frequent in overweight children (p < 0.001). The probability of symmetry in dental eruption increases for South American children, for an extra month of age, and each meter of height. BMI had an influence in the first tooth to appear only in the fourth quadrant. BMI did not seem to influence present teeth, and the sequence of permanent dental eruption was not influenced by the BMI category. Conclusions: Age, weight, height, and BMI act as significant predictors for eruption symmetry. BMI does not produce alterations in the eruption sequence of the permanent dentition.

Age estimation in the living: A scoping review of population data for skeletal and dental methods

Age estimation of living individuals has become a crucial part of the forensic practice, especially due to the global increase in cross-border migration. The low rate of birth registration in many countries, hence of identification documents of migrants, especially in Africa and Asia, highlights the importance of reliable methods for age estimation of living individuals. Despite the fact that a number of skeletal and dental methods for age estimation have been developed, their main limitation is that they are based on specific reference samples and there is still no consensus among researchers on whether these methods can be applied to all populations. Though this issue remains still unsolved, population information at a glance could be useful for forensic practitioners dealing with such issues. This study aims at presenting a scoping review and mapping of the current situation concerning population data for skeletal (hand-wrist and clavicle) and dental methods (teeth eruption and third molar formation) for age estimation in the living. Two hundred studies on the rate of skeletal maturation and four hundred thirty-nine on the rate of dental maturation were found, covering the period from 1952 and 2020 for a total of ninety-eight countries. For most of the western and central African countries there are currently no data on the rate of skeletal and dental maturation. The same applies to the countries of the Middle East, as well as the eastern European countries, especially as regard the skeletal development.

Association of obesity with the eruption of first and second permanent molars in children: a systematic review

BACKGROUND

Eruption timing of permanent teeth, particularly first and second molars, is of great importance due to its influence on occlusion, caries risk and timing of preventive and orthodontic intervention.

AIM

To evaluate the evidence assessing the correlation between obesity and eruption time of first and second permanent molars in children under 16 years of age as compared to normal-weight children. A secondary aim was to assess the total number of erupted teeth in both groups.

METHODS

A systematic search of databases including PubMed, MEDLINE, EMBASE, Scopus and Web of Science was conducted. Studies that assessed the effect of body mass index (BMI), adjusted BMI or z scores on dental eruption were included. National Institute of Health 'Quality Assessment Tool for Observational Cohort and Cross-sectional Studies' was used to assess the quality of included papers. A random-effects model with its 95% confidence intervals (CIs) was considered for meta-analysis.

RESULTS

A total of 381 papers were screened following duplicate removal. Twenty-six papers were read in full text, of which 19 were excluded. Seven studies were included in this review; one was longitudinal, and six were cross-sectional in design. A positive association of dental eruption with obesity was noted in six studies. Two studies were included in the explorative meta-analysis, the results of which indicated that obese, 12-year-olds are likely to have one more erupted tooth than their counterparts with a mean difference (MD) of (0.99, 95% CI 0.628-1.352).

CONCLUSION

There appears to be a positive correlation between obesity and dental eruption including the eruption timing of first and second permanent molars. Main risk of bias arises from the cross-sectional nature of included studies and lack of control of potential confounders. Further high-quality evidence is required to elucidate this association. Association of infant growth with emergence of permanent dentition among 12 year-aged southern Chinese school children

BACKGROUND

There is a need to comprehensively investigate the relationship between tooth eruption and infant growth to explain the theory of tooth emergence. This study aimed to investigate the association between infant growth during the first year of life and the emergence of the permanent teeth.

METHODS

A random sample of 668, 12-year-old students was recruited from a birth cohort. Erupted permanent tooth number was recorded. The association of infant growth (growth trajectories and growth rates) and permanent tooth emergence was examined through logistic regression analyses. The regression model was adjusted by potential confounders including gender, gestational age, mode of delivery, type of feeding, parental education, and health status.

RESULTS

The response rate was 76.9% (n = 514). Two hundred and forty-five (47.7%) children had all 28 permanent teeth erupted. Infants who had higher birth weight z-scores and those who had grown slowly during the first three months of life were more likely to have complete permanent teeth emergence at their 12-year-old in both unadjusted (p <  0.01) and adjusted model (adjusted for gender, gestational age, mode of delivery, type of feeding, parental education, and health status, p <  0.01). However, no significant association was found between the growth trajectories and permanent tooth emergence in either unadjusted or adjusted models (p > 0.05).

CONCLUSION

Birth weight and infant growth during the first three months of life might be associated with permanent tooth emergence at their 12 years of age. This association may be applied in the assessment of risk for dental caries or malocclusion.

The relationship of obesity to the timing of permanent tooth emergence in Czech children

BACKGROUND

The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of BMI on the timing of permanent tooth emergence in Czech children.

OBJECTIVES

In this cross-sectional study, 1370 Czech children were examined. The age, gender, weight, height, all emerged permanent teeth (except third molars) of each child were all recorded. A tooth is defined as having emerged when at least any part of it has penetrated the gingiva.

METHODS

A logistic regression model was used to calculate the median emergence age per tooth for both genders separately and BMI was used as a factor variable to detect statistically significant differences in the times of tooth emergence within pairs of BMI groups. The data were statistically processed using IBM SPSS Statistics 23 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL).

RESULTS

Statistically significant differences were found for the following permanent teeth (using the FDI two-digit system): 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 41, 44, 45, 46, 47, 33, 35, 37, 21, 24, 25, 26, 27 for girls and 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 41, 43, 44, 45, 22, 25, 32, 34, 35, 36 for boys. These teeth were observed to emerge earlier in obese children. A similar correlation (although not statistically significant) was observed between the time of emergence of the remaining teeth and the BMI of the child.

CONCLUSION

The data in this research highlight significant differences in emergence times of permanent teeth due to the influence of BMI in Czech children. These findings are important for dental treatment planning.

Association of weight and height with timing of deciduous tooth emergence

OBJECTIVES

The aim of this study was to associate weight and height with the timing of deciduous tooth emergence.

METHODS

1756 children, aged from 1 to 33 months (755 females and 1001 males) had been previously examined for the timing of deciduous tooth emergence and their weights and heights measured. Children were categorized into weight and height groups (underweight, normal, overweight, short stature, normal and tall stature). Probit regression analysis was used to calculate the ages at emergence of each deciduous tooth. Tooth emergence ages were compared pairwise across the weight and height groups.

RESULTS

The deciduous dentition emerged between 7.9-31.5, 7.8-29.6 and 6.3-26.5 months in the underweight, normal and overweight children, respectively. In the height groups, the ranges were 9.0-31.3, 7.4-27.0 and 6.7-24.3 in the short, normal and tall children, respectively. The extremes of weight and height were related to the times at deciduous tooth emergence where a substantial increase in weight or height was associated with earlier emergence, and vice versa. However, only canines, lateral incisors and upper central incisor showed statistically significant association with weight and none of the teeth exhibited statistically significant association with height. Moreover, no emergence sequence change was associated with weight and height.

CONCLUSIONS

The present study provides the first weight and height- specific data on the timing of deciduous tooth emergence. Although both weight and height are generally associated with the timing of deciduous tooth emergence, weight shows a stronger association for canines, lateral incisors and upper central incisor. The findings will aid assessing normal emergence timing in children with variant weights and heights.

Standards for permanent tooth emergence in Czech children

Background

The aim of this study is to develop a population-specific reference for permanent tooth emergence among 4–15 years old Czech Republic children. The reference derived from this sample population are essential for pediatric dental diagnostics, orthodontic treatment planning, as well as anthropological and forensic applications.

Methods

In this cross-sectional epidemiological survey, dental examinations of 1,370 Czech children (696 girls (50,8%) and 674 boys (49,2%), whose parents or legal guardians all signed informed consent forms) from 11 elementary schools and kindergartens were performed in the classroom. During the examination, previously emerged permanent teeth (other than third molars), the child's age and gender were recorded. A tooth is defined as having erupted when at least any part of the crown penetrates the gingiva, and is clinically seen in the oral cavity. A logistic regression model was used to calculate the median emergence age per tooth for both genders and the total sample. The data was statistically processed (using IBM SPSS Statistics 23) and carried out at a deviation level of 0.05. The statistical significance of the differences in the emergence of permanent teeth (contralateral, intermaxillary, inter-gender differences) was evaluated by the McNemar test.

Results

No statistically significant differences were observed in the emergence times between right and left sides. In addition, mandibular teeth emerged earlier than the corresponding maxillary ones (with the exception of the first and second premolars). Permanent teeth were found to emerge sooner in girls. Furthermore, the greatest inter-gender difference was observed in maxillary canines.

Conclusions

The new data reported can now be used as standards when assessing permanent tooth emergence of Czech children.

Timing of clinical eruption of third molars in a Jordanian population

OBJECTIVES

This study aimed at providing the first standards on the timing of third molar eruption in Jordanians.

METHODS

A total of 571 healthy Jordanian adolescents and young adults aged 15-27 years (275 males and 296 females distributed into one-year age groups) were clinically examined for third molar eruption. Presence of four clinical eruption stages from crown emergence to full eruption were counted and expressed each as a frequency relative to the total of participants within a given age group. Using probit regression, median ages at each of the eruption stages were calculated for the whole sample and for both genders.

RESULTS

In the whole sample, maxillary and mandibular third molars were found to emerge at 20 and 20.6 years and to reach full eruption at 22.7 and 23.5 years respectively. At all of the four clinical eruption stages, third molars of males and lower jaw slightly preceded those of females and upper jaw respectively. However, none of the differences were statistically significant.

CONCLUSIONS

The first data on the timing of clinical eruption of third molars in a Jordanian population have been provided to be utilized in various clinical and research fields of orthodontics, dental pathology, oral surgery, paleodontology, forensic dentistry and police sciences. As the clinical duration of third molar eruption ranges from 20 to 24 years, the responsibility for providing care of third molar eruption problems is shifted from secondary schools to tertiary education, governmental and private work bodies.
