Upgrading of agro-industrial green biomass residues from chocolate industry for adsorption process: diffusion and mechanistic insights

Response surface and DFT protocols for improvement of the adsorption process of lignocellulosic-based biomass for the removal of basic dyes

Jatobá-do-cerrado fruit shells, archetypical of lignocellulosic-based biomass, were used as an adsorbent to remove crystal violet (CV) and methylene blue (MB) from water. The adsorbent was characterized using various techniques, and kinetic studies showed dye adsorption followed second-order kinetics. An experimental design investigated the effects of pH and temperature on removal efficiency, with a quadratic model fitting the data best. The results suggest pH influences MB's adsorption capacity more than temperature and at 25 °C and pH 8, MB had a desirability value of 0.89, with 95 % removal efficiency. For CV, temperature had a greater influence, with a desirability value of 0.874 at 25 °C and pH 10, and 95 % removal efficiency. Adsorption isotherm studies revealed maximum adsorption capacities of 123.0 mg·g-1 and 113.0 mg·g-1 for CV and MB, respectively. Experimental thermodynamic parameters indicated an endothermic and spontaneous process which it was supported by quantum chemistry calculations. The protocols developed confirmed the potential for adsorbing CV and MB dyes in water, achieving over 73.1 and 74.4 mg g-1 dyes removal.

Construction of attapulgite decorated cetylpyridinium bromide/cellulose acetate composite beads for removal of Cr (VI) ions with emphasis on mechanistic insights

Eco-friendly and renewable composite beads were constructed for efficient adsorptive removal of Cr (VI) ions. Attapulgite (ATP) clay decorated with cetylpyridinium bromide (CPBr) was impregnated into cellulose acetate (CA) beads, which were formulated through a simple and cost-effective solvent-exchange approach. FTIR, XRD, SEM, Zeta potential, and XPS characterization tools verified the successful formation of ATP-CPBr@CA beads. The composite beads displayed a spherical and porous shape with a positively charged surface (26.6 mV) at pH 2. In addition, higher adsorption performance was accomplished by ATP-CPBr@CA composite beads with ease of separation compared to their components. Meanwhile, equilibrium isotherms pointed out that the Langmuir model was optimal for describing the adsorption process of Cr (VI) with a maximal adsorption capacity of 302 mg/g. Moreover, the D-R isotherm model verified the physical adsorption process, while adsorption data obeyed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Further, XPS results hypothesized that the removal mechanism involves adsorption via electrostatic interactions, redox reaction, and co-precipitation. Interestingly, the ATP-CPBr@CA composite beads reserved tolerable adsorption characteristics with a maximum removal present exceeding 70% after reuse for seven successive cycles, proposing its feasible applicability as a reusable and easy-separable candidate for removing heavy metals from aquatic bodies.

A review on sustainable management of biomass: physicochemical modification and its application for the removal of recalcitrant pollutants-challenges, opportunities, and future directions

Adsorption is one of the most efficient methods for remediating industrial recalcitrant wastewater due to its simple design and low investment cost. However, the conventional adsorbents used in adsorption have several limitations, including high cost, low removal rates, secondary waste generation, and low regeneration ability. Hence, the focus of the research has shifted to developing alternative low-cost green adsorbents from renewable resources such as biomass. In this regard, the recent progress in the modification of biomass-derived adsorbents, which are rich in cellulosic content, through a variety of techniques, including chemical, physical, and thermal processes, has been critically reviewed in this paper. In addition, the practical applications of raw and modified biomass-based adsorbents for the treatment of industrial wastewater are discussed extensively. In a nutshell, the adsorption mechanism, particularly for real wastewater, and the effects of various modifications on biomass-based adsorbents have yet to be thoroughly studied, despite the extensive research efforts devoted to their innovation. Therefore, this review provides insight into future research needed in wastewater treatment utilizing biomass-based adsorbents, as well as the possibility of commercializing biomass-based adsorbents into viable products.

Development of cellulose/hydroxyapatite/TiO2 scaffolds for efficient removal of lead (II) ions pollution: Characterization, kinetic analysis, and artificial neural network modeling

The utilization of nano-biodegradable composites for removing pollutants and heavy metals in aquatic environments has been widespread. This study focuses on synthesizing cellulose/hydroxyapatite nanocomposites with titanium dioxide (TiO2) via the freeze-drying method for the adsorption of lead ions in aquatic environments. The physical and chemical properties of the nanocomposites, including structure, morphology, and mechanical properties, were analyzed through FTIR, XRD, SEM, and EDS. In addition, parameters affecting the adsorption capacity, such as time, temperature, pH, and initial concentration, were determined. The nanocomposite exhibited a maximum adsorption capacity of 1012 mg⸱g-1, and the second-order kinetic model was found to govern the adsorption process. Additionally, an artificial neural network (ANN) was created using weight percentages (wt%) of nanoparticles included in the scaffold to predict the mechanical behavior, porosity, and desorption of the scaffolds at various weight percentages of hydroxyapatite (nHAP) and TiO2. The results of the ANN indicated that the incorporation of both single and hybrid nanoparticles into the scaffolds improved their mechanical behavior and desorption, as well as increased their porosity.

Sustainable synthesis of graphene sand composite from waste cooking oil for dye removal

Waste cooking oil (WCO) appears to be a potential carbonaceous source for synthesizing graphene sand composite (GSC) adsorbent in removing pollutants. This study presents a green synthesis method of GSC using WCO as a sustainable carbon source for the synthesis of GSC through the thermal graphitization method. Characterization analysis conducted on GSCWCO verified the successful coating of WCO onto the sand surface and conversion to graphene, which possessed distinct functional groups and features of graphene materials. GSCWCO adsorbent effectiveness in removing Congo Red dye through batch adsorption was studied under the influence of different initial concentrations (20 to 100 mg/L), and the optimum pH (pH 2 to 10), contact time (5 to 240 min), and temperature (25 to 45 °C) were investigated. The GSCWCO showed removal rates of 91.5% achieved at an initial dye concentration of 20 mg L-1, 1.0 g of adsorbent dosage, a temperature of 25 °C, and 150 min of contact time. The GSCWCO exhibited a maximum capacity of 5.52 mg g-1, was well-fitted to the Freundlich isotherm model with an R2 value of 0.989 and had an adsorption mechanism that followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Negative values of enthalpy (ΔH) and Gibbs free energy (ΔG) revealed that CR adsorption onto GSCWCO was a spontaneous and exothermic process. The presence of functional groups on the surface of GSCWCO with such interactions (π-π attractive forces, hydrophobic forces, and hydrogen bonding) was responsible for the anionic dye removal. Regeneration of GSCWCO adsorbent declined after four cycles, possibly due to the chemisorption of dyes with GSC that resulted in inefficient adsorption. Being a waste-to-wealth product, GSCWCO possessed great potential to be used for water treatment and simultaneously benefited the environment through the effort to reduce the excessive discharge of WCO.

The superior performance of silica gel supported nano zero-valent iron for simultaneous removal of Cr (VI)

Pure nano zero-valent iron (NZVI) was fabricated under optimum conditions based on material production yield and its efficiency toward acid blue dye-25 decolorization. The optimum prepared bare NZVI was immobilized with two different supports of silica and starch to fabricate their composites nanomaterials. The three different prepared zero-valent iron-based nanomaterials were evaluated for removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)). The silica-modified NZVI recorded the most outstanding removal efficiency for Cr(VI) compared to pristine NZVI and starch-modified NZVI. The removal efficiency of Cr(VI) was improved under acidic conditions and decreased with raising the initial concentration of Cr(VI). The co-existence of cations, anions, and humic acid reduced Cr(VI) removal efficiency. The removal efficiency was ameliorated from 96.8% to 100% after adding 0.75 mM of H₂O₂. The reusability of silica-modified NZVI for six cycles of Cr(VI) removal was investigated and the removal mechanism was suggested as the physicochemical process. Based on Langmuir isotherm, the maximal Cr(VI) removal capacity attained 149.25 mg/g. Kinetic and equilibrium data were efficiently fitted using the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models, respectively confirming the proposed mechanism. Diffusion models affirmed that the adsorption rate was governed by intraparticle diffusion. Adsorption thermodynamic study suggested the spontaneity and exothermic nature of the adsorption process. This study sheds light on the technology that has potential for magnetic separation and long-term use for effective removal of emerging water pollutants.

Evaluation of Zn Adenine-Based Bio-MOF for Efficient Remediation of Different Types of Dyes

As an eco-friendly material, Zn-adeninate bio-metal-organic framework (bio-MOF) was investigated as an efficient adsorbent for both anionic and cationic dyes. The adsorption capability of the synthesized Zn-adeninate bio-MOF was confirmed by its notable surface area of 52.62 m2 g−1 and total pore volume of 0.183 cm3 g−1. The bio-MOF adsorption profiles of anionic direct red 81 (DR-81) and cationic methylene blue (MB) dyes were investigated under different operating parameters. The optimum dosages of Zn-adeninate bio-MOF were 0.5 g L−1 and 1 g L−1 for MB and DR-81 decolorization, respectively. The pHPZC of Zn-adeninate bio-MOF was 7.2, and maximum monolayer adsorption capacity was 132.15 mg g–1 for MB, which decreased to 82.54 mg g–1 for DR-81 dye. Thermodynamic data indicated the spontaneous and endothermic nature of the decolorization processes. Additionally, the adsorption processes were in agreement with the Langmuir and pseudo-second-order kinetic models. The synthesized Zn-adeninate bio-MOF could be reused several times with high decolorization ability. These findings demonstrated that the synthesized Zn bio-MOF is an effective and promising adsorbent material for the removal of both cationic and anionic dyes from polluted water.

Controlled synthesis of graphene oxide/silica hybrid nanocomposites for removal of aromatic pollutants in water

The remarkable characteristics of graphene make it a model candidate for boosting the effectiveness of nano-adsorbents with high potential owing to its large surface area, π–π interaction, and accessible functional groups that interact with an adsorbate. However, the stacking of graphene reduces its influence adsorption characteristics and also its practical application. On the other hand, the widespread use of aromatic compounds in the industry has aggravated the contamination of the water environment, and how to effectively remove them has become a research hotspot. Herein, we develop the functionalization of silica nanoparticles on graphene oxide nanosheet (FGS) by a facile, cheap, and efficient synthesis protocol for adsorption of Trypan Blue (TB) and Bisphenol A (BPA). It was demonstrated that chemical activation with KOH at high autoclaving temperature successfully transformed rice husk ash (RHA) into FGS. The graphene oxide layered interlamination was kept open by using SiO₂ to expose the interlayers' strong adsorption sites. XRD, EDX, FTIR, Raman spectroscopy, SEM, HR-TEM, and BET surface area are used to investigate the chemical composition, structure, morphology, and textural nature of the as-produced FGS hybrid nanocomposite. The various oxygen-containing functional groups of the hybrid nanocomposites resulted in a significantly increased adsorption capacity, according to experimental findings. In addition, FGS2, the best composite, has a specific surface area of 1768 m²g⁻¹. Based on Langmuir isotherms, the maximal TB dye and BPA removal capacity attained after 30 min were 455 and 500 mg/g, respectively. The Langmuir isotherm model, a pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and an intraparticle diffusion model have all been used to provide mechanistic insights into the adsorption process. This suggests that BPA and TB adsorption on FGS2 is mostly chemically regulated monolayer adsorption. Due to its unique sp²-hybridized single-atom-layer structure, the exposed graphene oxide nanosheets' extremely hydrophobic effect, hydrogen bonding, and strong—electron donor–acceptor interaction contributed to their improved adsorption of BPA and TB. According to adsorption thermodynamics, FGS2 adsorption of TB and BPA is a spontaneous exothermic reaction that is aided by lowering the temperature. For adsorption-based wastewater cleanup, the produced nanocomposites with a regulated amount of carbon and silica in the form of graphene oxide and silica can be used. These findings suggest that functionalized GO/SiO₂ hybrid nanocomposites could be a viable sorbent for the efficient and cost-effective removal of aromatic chemicals from wastewater.

Lignin from Agro-Industrial Waste to an Efficient Magnetic Adsorbent for Hazardous Crystal Violet Removal

The presence of cationic dyes, even in a tiny amount, is harmful to aquatic life and pollutes the environment. Therefore, it is essential to remove these hazardous dyes to protect the life of marine creatures from these pollutants. In this research, crystal violet (CV) dye elimination was performed using a lignin copper ferrite (LCF) adsorbent. The adsorbent was synthesized and characterized using FTIR, Raman, SEM, EDX with mapping, and VSM, which proved the successful formation of magnetic LCF. Adsorption experiments were performed using different effective parameters. The highest adsorption potential (97%) was executed at mild operating conditions, with a 5 min contact time at room temperature and pH 8. The adsorption kinetic study utilized four kinetic models: first-order, second-order, intraparticle diffusion, and Elovich. The results revealed that the adsorption process complies with the pseudo-first-order with a maximum adsorption capacity of 34.129 mg/g, proving that the adsorption process mechanism is a physical adsorption process. Three isotherm models, Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin, were examined. The adsorption mechanism of CV onto LCF was also followed by the Langmuir and Freundlich models. The thermodynamic parameters were examined and revealed that the adsorption onto LCF was an exothermic process. It was proposed that the adsorption process is a spontaneous exothermic process. LCF appears to forcefully remove toxic CV dye from textile wastewater.

On the Behavior of Newly Synthesized Functionalized Imidazolium-Based Ionic Liquids for Highly Efficient Extraction and Separation of Pirimicarb from Orchard Real Wastewater

The presence of pirimicarb compounds as pollutants in orchard wastewater has sparked rising worries about their detrimental impacts on the ecosystem and human health, and their removal is critical for Pakistan’s aquatic environment. It not only contaminates fruit, but it also leaches into the soil and contaminates groundwater. However, there is little data on the effective removal of pirimicarb from orchard wastewater. The main purpose of this study is to create a novel family of functionalized imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs) using a simple chemical process, which will be utilized for the first time to extract pirimicarb from orchard wastewater in an efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally acceptable manner. FTIR, SEM, XRD, TGA, BET, and 1H NMR spectroscopy were used to characterize the functionalized samples. The impact of the IL substituent on the separation capacity was studied. In addition, the extraction and separation of pirimicarb from orchard wastewater were investigated under a variety of conditions (time, concentration, and temperature) in order to better understand the adsorption behaviors of distinct ILs in an aqueous solution. The adsorption equilibrium was reached in 30 minutes, and the maximum removal of pirimicarb was achieved utilizing the synthesized [C2im][C3H6NH2]Br-, according to the data. The pseudo-first-order model and the Langmuir model both suit well with the adsorption mechanism of pirimicarb with very good adsorptive capacities. Thermodynamic analyses indicated spontaneous, endothermic, and entropy-driven adsorption processes. The synthesized imidazolium-based ILs have good regeneration capability and recycling at least for six adsorption-desorption runs and have also been used to successfully detect pirimicarb orchard wastewater samples. The superior safety of the proposed method nominates it as a promising future strategy for pollution prevention. Consequently, this work has proven that the pirimicarb adsorption to various imidazolium-based ILs was dependent on the structures of the produced imidazolium-based ILs, which specifies its potential for practical applications in water pollutant removal and environmental remediation.

Role of Combined Na2HPO4 and ZnCl2 in the Unprecedented Catalysis of the Sequential Pretreatment of Sustainable Agricultural and Agro-Industrial Wastes in Boosting Bioethanol Production

Improper lignocellulosic waste disposal causes severe environmental pollution and health damage. Corn Stover (CS), agricultural, and aseptic packaging, Tetra Pak (TP) cartons, agro-industrial, are two examples of sustainable wastes that are rich in carbohydrate materials and may be used to produce valuable by-products. In addition, attempts were made to enhance cellulose fractionation and improve enzymatic saccharification. In this regard, these two wastes were efficiently employed as substrates for bioethanol production. This research demonstrates the effect of disodium hydrogen phosphate (Na₂HPO₄) and zinc chloride (ZnCl₂) (NZ) as a new catalyst on the development of the sequential pretreatment strategy in the noticeable enzymatic hydrolysis. Physico-chemical changes of the native and the pretreated sustainable wastes were evaluated by compositional analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). These investigations showed major structural changes after the optimized sequential pretreatment. This pretreatment not only influences the delignification process, but also affects the functionalization of cellulose chemical structure. NZ released a higher glucose concentration (328.8 and 996.8 mg/dl) than that of ZnCl₂ (Z), which released 203.8 and 846.8 mg/dl from CS and TP, respectively. This work led to the production of about 500 mg/dl of ethanol, which is promising and a competitor to other studies. These findings contribute to increasing the versatility in the reuse of agricultural and agro-industrial wastes to promote interaction areas of pollution prevention, industrialization, and clean energy production, to attain the keys of sustainable development goals.

The Interplay of Autoclaving with Oxalate as Pretreatment Technique in the View of Bioethanol Production Based on Corn Stover

Bio-based treatment technologies are gaining great interest worldwide, and significant efforts are being afforded to develop technology for the use of lignocellulosic biomass. The potential of corn stover (CS) as a feedstock for bioethanol production was investigated by creating an optimal pretreatment condition to maximize glucose production. The current study undertook the impact of novel physico-chemical pretreatment methods of CS, i.e., autoclave-assisted oxalate (CSOA) and ultrasound-assisted oxalate (CSOU), on the chemical composition of CS and subsequent saccharification and fermentation for bioethanol production. The delignification was monitored by physicochemical characterizations such as SEM, XRD, FTIR, CHNs, and TGA. The results evidenced that delignification and enzymatic saccharification of the CS pretreated by CSOA was higher than CSOU. The optimum enzymatic saccharification operating conditions were 1:30 g solid substrate/mL sodium acetate buffer at 50 °C, shaking speed 100 rpm, and 0.4 g enzyme dosage. This condition was applied to produce glucose from CS, followed by bioethanol production by S. cerevisiae using an anaerobic fermentation process after 72 h. S. cerevisiae showed high conversion efficiency by producing a 360 mg/dL bioethanol yield, which is considered 94.11% of the theoretical ethanol yield. Furthermore, this research provides a potential path for waste material beneficiation, such as through utilizing CS.

Structure and properties of cellulose/HAP nanocomposite hydrogels

The exploiting of abundant natural polymers as potential absorbents for heavy metal ions is attracting. Cellulose is the most abundant natural polymer and exhibits amazing properties such as high chemical stability, hydrophilicity and biodegradability. However, some properties of pure cellulose-based materials including adsorbability are usually not enough, so it is important to improve their properties to broaden their applications. In the present work, hydroxyapitite (HAP) nanoparticles were prepared and introduced to improve the cellulose hydrogel (CG) properties. The structure and properties of the resultant cellulose/HAP nanocomposite hydrogels (CHG) were characterized and studied systematically. The results indicated that HAP nanoparticles was fixed and distributed evenly in CG. The maximum decomposition temperature increased gradually from 334.6 °C for CG to 346.7 °C for CHG, and the compressive strength increased gradually from 100 kPa for CG to 570 kPa for CHG with the increase of HAP content, respectively. Moreover, the adsorption capacity (q_e) value of CHG towards Cu²⁺ could reach more than 300% higher than that of CG. As a potential absorbent, CHG exhibited relatively good recyclability of more than 78% after 10 cycles. Therefore, the introduction of HAP improved the properties of CG greatly, showing wide potential applications.
