Oxidized guar gum–ZnO hybrid nanostructures: synthesis, characterization and antibacterial activity

Investigating flocculation mechanisms and ecological safety of cationic guar gum for rapid harvesting of microalgal cells

Addressing the drawbacks of traditional flocculants on microalgae biomass harvesting is crucial for large-scale industrial applications of microalgae production. In this study, cationic bioflocculant was successfully prepared by introducing cationic groups into the side chain of guar gum, achieving in-situ algae flocculation efficiency of 83.5 % with the dosage of 18.0 mg/L under pH = 10.0. Through a harmonious integration of predictive modelling and practical experimentation, a superior cell flocculation capacity of 23.5 g/g was achieved. In addition, the environmental safety and biocompatibility of cationic guar gum was assessed, using the typical suspension quantitative bacteriostatic method and the fluorescent double-staining technique. The results showed that the inhibition efficiency of Staphylococcus aureus in the system containing 60.0 mg/L cationic guar gum was only 12.0 % and there was no inhibition against Escherichia coli colonies. These findings provide a safe and green flocculant for efficient microalgae harvesting and spent medium treatment.

Synthesis of porous calcium-guar gum benzoate nano-biohybrids for sorptive removal of congo red and phosphates from water

This work aims to develop an eco-sound nano-bio-hybrid sorbent using sustainable materials for sorptive elimination of congo red and phosphates from aquatic environment. An amphipathic biopolymer derivative, high DS guar gum benzoate (GGBN) was used for entrapment of as synthesized calcium carbonate nanoparticles using solvent diffusion nano-precipitation technique. Designer nano-biohybrids were developed upon experimenting with various materials stoichiometry. SEM, XRD and EDX studies confirmed near-uniform impregnation of rhombohedral calcium carbonate crystals throughout the biopolymer matrix. Average pore size distribution and surface area of final product Ca-GGBNC, were estimated from NDLFT and BET methods respectively. Analysis of adsorption findings acquired at study temperature 27 ± 2 °C showed that the maximum adsorption capacity of Ca-GGBNC recorded qmax, 333.33 mg/g for congo red azo dye and that for phosphate was at 500 mg/g. Adsorptive removal was noted and both components followed pseudo second order kinetics. Intra-particle diffusion kinetics investigation disclosed that the boundary layer effect was prominent and the adsorption rates were not solely directed by the diffusion stage. Activation energy, Ea was to be estimated using Arrhenius equation at 56.136 and 47.015 KJ/mol for congo red and phosphates respectively. The calculated thermodynamic parameters(ΔG°, ΔH°, and ΔS°) revealed the spontaneous, feasible and endothermic sorption process. Owing to active surface area, spherical size, functional moiety and porous network, antibacterial properties of nanobiohybrid were persistent and MIC against E. coli and S. aureus were recorded at 200 μg/mL and 350 μg/mL respectively.

Antimicrobial efficacy of Mentha piperata-derived biogenic zinc oxide nanoparticles against UTI-resistant pathogens

Misuse of antibiotics leads to the worldwide spread of antibiotic resistance, which motivates scientists to create new antibiotics. The recurring UTI due to antibiotics-resistant microorganism's challenges scientists globally. The biogenic nanoparticles have the potential to meet the escalating requirements of novel antimicrobial agents. The green synthesis of nanoparticles (NPs) gained more attention due to their reliable applications against resistant microbes. The current study evaluates the biogenic ZnO NPs of Mentha piperata extract against resistant pathogens of urinary tract infections by agar well diffusion assay. The biogenic ZnO NPs revealed comparatively maximum inhibition in comparison to synthetic antibiotics against two bacterial strains (Proteus mirabilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and a fungal strain (Candida albicans).The synthesized biogenic ZnO NPs alone revealed maximum activities than the combination of plant extract (PE) and ZnO NPs, and PE alone. The physiochemical features of ZnO NPs characterized through UV-Vis spectroscopy, FTIR, XRD, SEM, and EDX. The UV-Vis spectroscopy revealed 281.85 nm wavelengths; the XRD pattern revealed the crystalline structure of ZnO NPs. The FTIR analysis revealed the presence of carboxylic and nitro groups, which could be attributed to plant extract. SEM analysis revealed spherical hollow symmetry due to electrostatic forces. The analysis via EDX confirmed the presence of Zn and oxygen in the sample. The physiochemical features of synthesized ZnO NPs provide pivotal information such as quality and effectiveness. The current study revealed excellent dose-dependent antimicrobial activity against the pathogenic isolates from UTI-resistant patients. The higher concentration of ZnONPs interacts with the cell membrane which triggers oxidative burst. They may bind with the enzymes and proteins and brings epigenetic alteration which leads to membrane disruption or cell death.

Guar gum, a low-cost sustainable biopolymer, for wastewater treatment: A review

Rapid population growth and the resultant pollution of freshwater resources have created a water stress condition reducing the availability of safe and affordable water. Guar gum, a biocompatible macromolecule obtained from the endosperm of the seeds of Cyamopsis tetragonolobus, is a fascinating raw material for multifunctional adsorbents. This review assembled the work conducted by various researchers over the past few decades and discussed the structure, properties, and different modifications methods employed to develop versatile guar gum-based adsorbent. The paper also summarized the recent progress of guar gum-based nanocomposites for the remediation of multiple hazardous substances such as organic dyes, toxic heavy metal ions, oil-water separation as well as inhibiting the growth of bacterial pathogens. Thus, the important contribution of guar gum composites to safeguard the water quality is highlighted which will overcome the limitations and streamline the future course of innovative research.

Ecofriendly Green Synthesis of the ZnO-Doped CuO@Alg Bionanocomposite for Efficient Oxidative Degradation of p-Nitrophenol

In the present study, ecofriendly green synthesized ZnO/CuO nanorods were prepared by using the stabilizing and reducing characteristics of the alginate biopolymer. The bionanocomposite (BNC) material was characterized by various sophisticated analytical tools such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, UV-visible spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method. The composition of ZnO/CuO@Alg BNC was found to be C (16.16 ± 0.42%), O (42.26 ± 1.87%), Cu (31.96 ± 1.05%), and Zn (9.62 ± 0.48%), which also supports the approximate 3:1 ratio of Cu2+ and Zn2+ taken as the precursor. The nanocrystalline spinel ferrite was found to have a BET specific surface area of 19.24 m2 g-1 with a total pore volume of 0.075 cm3 g-1 and 1.45 eV as the band gap energy (E g). Further, the material was applied for the photodegradation of p-nitrophenol (PNP) under the advanced oxidative process (AOP) under visible sunlight irradiation. The visible light radiation was used for the degradation of PNP under pH 2 conditions and resulted in 98.38% of the photocatalytic efficiency of the ZnO/CuO@Alg catalyst within 137 min of irradiation time. The photocatalytic reaction was best defined by the pseudo-first-order kinetics which involves the adsorption of the PNP molecule on the surface of the catalyst, thereby demineralizing it in the presence of advanced active •OH radicals. The values of rate constant for the pseudo-first-order model (k 1) were calculated as 0.013, 0.016, 0.019, 0.021, and 0.023 min-1 with half-life periods of 53.31, 43.31, 36.47, 33.00, and 30.13 min for 10-50 mg L-1 PNP concentrations. The presence of t-butyl alcohol decreases the photocatalytic efficiency, which suggests that the degradation of PNP was accomplished by the •OH oxidative radical.

Antibacterial nanostructures derived from oxidized sodium alginate-ZnO

The present study describes synthesis, characterization and antibacterial application of oxidized sodium alginate (OSA)-zinc oxide (ZnO) hybrid nanostructures (OSA-ZnO). In continuation to our previous study on oxidized guar gum (OGG)-ZnO (OGG-ZnO) nanocomposite, in the present study we have chosen OSA to understand the role of polysaccharide charge type in designing the antibacterial material. The nanomaterial has been characterized using UV-visible, FTIR, XRD, SEM and TEM analyses. The nanostructure has shown crystalline nature having hexagonal phase with preferred (101) orientation, while TEM image indicated that the material has ~6 nm particle size. It exhibited very good antibacterial performance against Bacillus subtilis (B. subtilis), Cellulomonas cellulans (C. cellulans), Staphylococcus typhi (S. typhi), and Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacterial strains, ZOI for B. subtilis, C. cellulans, S. typhi, and E. coli being 22, 18, 19.5 and 18.5 mm respectively. Under identical conditions, pure ZnO showed significantly lower ZOI for the corresponding bacterial strains (14, 12.5, 12 and 13.5 mm respectively), while native SA and OSA did not exhibit any biological activity.

Antimicrobial gum bio-based nanocomposites and their industrial and biomedical applications

Gum polysaccharides are derived from renewable sources. They are readily available, inexpensive, non-hazardous and eco-friendly. Depending upon the source, gums may be categorized as microbial gums, plant exudate gums or seed gums. Naturally occurring gum carbohydrates find multiple applications in the biomedical arena, compared with synthetic compounds, because of their unique structures and functionalities. Gums and their biocomposites are preferred for sustained drug delivery because they are safe and edible as well as more susceptible to biodegradation. The present review provides a state-of-the-art conspectus on the industrial and biomedical applications of antimicrobial gum-based biocomposites. Different kinds of gums polysaccharides will first be addressed based on their sources. Metal-, carbon- and organic-based nanostructures that are used in gum nanocomposites will then be reviewed with respect to their industrial and biomedical applications, to provide a backdrop for future research.

Robust photoactive nanoadsorbents with antibacterial activity for the removal of dyes

ZnO nanostructures (NS)/guar gum (GG) nanocomposites have been successfully synthesized and tested as sorbents for photodegradation, adsorption and antimicrobial activity for dye removal. The addition of ZnO improves the thermal stability of GG based on the ratio of the oxygen in the OH form and the total oxygen in the samples as indicated via XPS and FTIR analyses. Among all tested composites, the ZnO NPs/GG nanocomposite showed the highest photocatalytic activity and hence used in extended adsorption and degradation studies against the anionic dye reactive red (RR195) and the cationic dye Rhodamine B (RhB). The adsorption mechanism and kinetics were studied in details. The ZnO NPs/GG nanocomposite showed quite high removal efficiency for both dyes reaching about 96 degradation percent of the initial dye concentration as well as a high adsorption capacity reaching 70 mg g^-1. The adsorption of both dyes on ZnO NPs/GG was found to obey the Freundlich adsorption model with pseudo-second-order kinetics. The antibacterial assay showed an enhanced antibacterial effect of ZnO/GG against E-Coli/TOP10 (PTA 10989) strain compared to pristine ZnO or pure guar gum. The obtained results were proved to be of high significance based on the statistical analysis using one-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's analysis.

Sonochemical synthesis of gum guar biopolymer stabilized copper oxide on exfoliated graphite: Application for enhanced electrochemical detection of H2O2 in milk and pharmaceutical samples

A novel and cost-effective synthesis of biopolymer-based organic and inorganic composite materials have received substantial attention in a broad range application including electroanalysis of small molecules. In this perspective, we report the synthesis of gum guar (guar) biopolymer stabilized cupric oxide decorated on exfoliated graphite (GR-guar/CuO) composite. Different physicochemical characterization methods were used to confirm the successful exfoliation of graphite and formation of the GR-guar/CuO composite. A simple sonochemical method has been used for the preparation of guar stabilized exfoliated graphite (GR-guar). The flower-like CuO on GR-guar and guar stabilized CuO (CuO-guar) composites were synthesized using a hydrothermal method. Cyclic voltammetric studies revealed that the GR-guar/CuO composite modified screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) had enhanced electro-reduction ability towards H₂O₂ than GR-guar and pristine graphite/CuO-guar modified SPCEs. Under optimized experimental conditions, the GR-guar/CuO composite modified electrode detects H₂O₂ in the response ranges from 0.02 to 1296.6 µM. The sensor shows a lower detection limit of 5.8 nM with high sensitivity. The as-prepared GR-guar/CuO composite sensor is highly reproducible and had excellent selectivity and practicality towards the detection of H₂O₂. Consequently, the fabricated sensor can be used for the accurate detection of H₂O₂ in real samples.
