Growth, serum biochemical, and histopathological responses of broilers administered with silver nanoparticles as a drinking water disinfectant

Valorizing pomegranate wastes by producing functional silver nanoparticles with antioxidant, anticancer, antiviral, and antimicrobial activities and its potential in food preservation

The food sector generates massive amounts of waste, which are rich in active compounds, especially polyphenols; therefore, valorizing these wastes is a global trend. In this study, we produce silver nanoparticles from pomegranate wastes, characterized by enhanced antioxidant, anticancer, antiviral, and antimicrobial properties and investigated their potential to maintain the fruit quality for sixty days in market. The pomegranate waste-mediated silver nanoparticles (PPAgNPs) were spherical shape (measured by TEM), 20 nm (Zeta sizer), negatively charged -25.98 mV (Zeta potential), and surrounded by active groups (FTIR). The PPAgNPs scavenged 94 % of DPPH radicals and inhibited the growth of pathogens, i.e., Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria monocytogenes, Campylobacter jejuni, Salmonella typhi and Candida with inhibition zones diameters (16-45 mm). They impeded the development of breast and colon cancer cell lines by 80 and 78 %, increased the activity of apoptosis marker caspase 3, and inhibited 82 % of COVID-19. The PPAgNPs were added to the rat diet at 80, 160, and 320 µg/kg levels. PPAgNPs administered at a concentration of 160 µg/kg in the rat diet resulted in the best growth performance, normal liver and kidney parameters (p = 0.029-0.038), lowered lipid profile, malondialdhyde (MDA), and raised glutathion reduced (GSH), total protein (TP). Also, the reduced gene expression of Interleukin 6 (IL-6) and Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) in albino rats' serum indicates the anti-inflammatory effect of PPAgNPs. PPAgNPs developed a functional coating to preserve mandarin fruit for 60 days by dipping technique. The active coat containing PPAgNPs can effectively preserve the fruit for 60 days.

Chitosan coating silver nanoparticles as a promising feed additive in broilers chicken

The present study aimed to evaluate the potential of chitosan coating silver nanoparticles to enhance the growth performance and immune status of broilers without inducing oxidative stress-related pathological lesions in any organs or leaving residues of silver in the edible parts. Five clusters of Cobb one-day-old chicks (n = 10/group in each replication) were given oral therapy, once a week for 36 days as follows: (1) distilled water, (2, 3) 0.5- and 5 ppm silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), respectively, (4, 5) 0.5- and 5 ppm chitosan/silver nanoconjugates (CS/Ag-NCs), respectively. The results demonstrated a marked elevation in the body weight gain with a decline in the food conversion ratio and marked improvement in feeding and drinking behavior of all nanoparticles treated groups, but higher in CS/Ag-NCs groups than AgNPs groups and control group. In contrast to the 0.5 ppm AgNPs receiving group, the group receiving 5 ppm AgNPs noticed remarkable histological changes in some organs, including the liver, kidneys, spleen, and heart. Moreover, the administration of CS/Ag-NCs at two dosage levels didn't influence any histological changes. The AgNPs groups' antibody titers against the ND and AI viruses were almost identical to those of the control group. Otherwise, CS/Ag-NCs groups recorded the highest antibody titers. Additionally, there was a significant increase in silver content in most edible organs of AgNPs groups at a dosage level of 5 ppm. Otherwise, the coating of AgNPs by CSNPs could decrease the aggregation of silver in the biological organs. Thus, we recommend utilizing 0.5 ppm CS/Ag-NCs in broiler farms to promote their growth performance and strengthen their immune defense.

Silver-Silica nanoparticles induced dose-dependent modulation of histopathological, immunohistochemical, ultrastructural, proinflammatory, and immune status of broiler chickens

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are a powerful disinfectant, but little information is available on their potential use as a growth promoter and the safety margin of this. In this study, 480 1-day-old Cobb chicks were assigned to one control and three treated groups. The treated groups were supplemented with silver-doped silica nanoparticles (SiO₂@AgNPs) at three dietary levels (8, 16, and 20 mg/kg diet) for 35 days. The results revealed no significant changes in the growth performance and oxidative parameters, and in most of the hematological and biochemical parameters among the control and treated groups. In contrast, dose-dependent adverse effects were exerted on the histopathological structure and immunohistochemical expression of CD45 in liver, kidneys, and lymphoid organs (spleen, bursa, and thymus). In addition, the relative weight of lymphoid organs and the serum levels of immunoglobulins M and G were significantly diminished. Moreover, the gene expression of proinflammatory cytokines (IL-β1 and TNF-α) and the ultrastructural morphology in breast muscle showed significant dose-dependent alterations. It could be concluded that the dietary supplementation of SiO₂@AgNPs at a level of 8 mg/kg diet or more has dose-dependent proinflammatory and immunosuppressive effects on broiler chickens.

Nanocarriers-based immobilization of enzymes for industrial application

Nanocarriers-based immobilization strategies are a novel concept in the enhancement of enzyme stability, shelf life and efficiency. A wide range of natural and artificial supports have been assessed for their efficacy in enzyme immobilization. Nanomaterials epitomize unique and fascinating matrices for enzyme immobilization. These structures include carbon nanotubes, superparamagnetic nanoparticles and nanofibers. These nano-based supports offer stable attachment of enzymes, thus ensuring their reusability in diverse industrial applications. This review attempts to encompass recent developments in the critical role played by nanotechnology towards the improvement of the practical applicability of microbial enzymes. Nanoparticles are increasingly being used in combination with various polymers to facilitate enzyme immobilization. These endeavors are proving to be conducive for enzyme-catalyzed industrial operations. In recent years the diversity of nanomaterials has grown tremendously, thus offering endless opportunities in the form of novel combinations for various biotransformation experimentations. These nanocarriers are advantageous for both free enzymes and whole-cell immobilization, thus demonstrating to be relatively effective in several fermentation procedures.

Reducing the Abundance of Harmful Bacteria of Rooftop Tank-Stored Drinking Water Using Silver Nanoparticles and Acetic Acid and Its Impact on Japanese Quail Growth Performances

This study evaluated the microbial diversity of rooftop tank-stored drinking water consumed by Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) using silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and acetic acid (AC) and their mixture. Japanese quails (2 weeks old) of two different plumage colors, white and brown, were divided into four groups. In group 1 (control), birds received rooftop tank-stored water. In groups 2, 3, and 4, birds received rooftop tank-stored water treated with AC (0.5 mL/L), AgNPs (0.1 mg/L), or both AC and AgNPs. A reduction in the total coliform count was observed for AgNP- and AC-treated water after 2 h, 24 h, 48 h, and 5 days (P < 0.05). Growth rates and feed intake in both white- and brown-feathered quails were also increased using both AC and AgNPs (P < 0.05). A significant decrease in water consumption was observed in the brown-feathered quails, whereas the white-feathered quails drank more water (P < 0.05). Meanwhile, serum parameters remained unchanged in the white-feathered quails using both AC or/and AgNP purifiers (P > 0.05), whereas brown-feathered quails receiving water treated with AC or both AC and AgNPs displayed a significant increase in serum total protein and hemoglobin compared with quails receiving water treated with AgNPs alone or non-treated water (P < 0.05). Cholesterol and triglycerides levels were significantly increased when using both AC or/and AgNP purifiers (P < 0.05). In conclusion, both AgNPs and AC are recommended as efficient purifiers to eliminate pathogenic bacteria and to increase the growth performance and health condition of white- and brown-feathered Japanese quail birds.

Oral administration of silver nanoparticles-adorned starch as a growth promotor in poultry: Immunological and histopathological study

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have recently emerged as promising growth promoters and immune-lifting agents in the poultry industry. This study investigated the potential impact of AgNP supplementation in the drinking water (DW) of broiler chickens during the fattening period. AgNPs were produced through chemical reduction using starch as a reducing and stabilizing agent. Different concentrations (1-5 ppm) of AgNPs were prepared and added to the DW of five different groups of chickens. Results confirmed efficient and safe application of AgNPs in DW at concentrations up to 2 ppm in term of growth performance (body weight, body weight gain, and feed conversion ratio) and hematological parameters. However, higher concentrations (3-5 ppm) induced dose-dependent mild-to-moderate adverse effects on hematological, biochemical, and oxidative parameters (MDA, TAC, and GSH-px). While growth performance, gene expression of fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF2), vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA),and insulin-like growth factor (IGF1) in muscle, histopathological and immunohistochemical evaluation of liver, kidney, spleen, bursa, and thymus, and ultrastructural analysis of breast muscle were not significantly affected, even at high concentrations of AgNPs. Therefore, supplementation of AgNPs up to 2 ppm in the DW of broilers is promising.

The Mechanistic Action of Biosynthesised Silver Nanoparticles and Its Application in Aquaculture and Livestock Industries

Nanotechnology is a rapidly developing field due to the emergence of various resistant pathogens and the failure of commercial methods of treatment. AgNPs have emerged as one of the best nanotechnology metal nanoparticles due to their large surface-to-volume ratio and success and efficiency in combating various pathogens over the years, with the biological method of synthesis being the most effective and environmentally friendly method. The primary mode of action of AgNPs against pathogens are via their cytotoxicity, which is influenced by the size and shape of the nanoparticles. The cytotoxicity of the AgNPs gives rise to various theorized mechanisms of action of AgNPs against pathogens such as activation of reactive oxygen species, attachment to cellular membranes, intracellular damage and inducing the viable but non-culturable state (VBNC) of pathogens. This review will be centred on the various theorized mechanisms of actions and its application in the aquaculture, livestock and poultry industries. The application of AgNPs in aquaculture is focused around water treatment, disease control and aquatic nutrition, and in the livestock application it is focused on livestock and poultry.
