Impact of Plant Extract Phytochemicals on the Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles

This work aims to analyze the influence of selected plants on the synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). Six plants were chosen for the experiment, from which extracts were prepared: maclura fruit, spruce and ginkgo needles, green algae (Ch. kessleri), and mushrooms, namely Collybia nuda, and Macrolepiota procera. The composition of the extracts and colloids after preparation of the nanoparticles was analyzed using FTIR analysis. The composition of the extracts affected not only the rate of the synthesis but also the shape of the nanoparticles. TEM analysis confirmed the synthesis of mainly spherical nanoparticles (size range: 10-25 nm). However, triangular prisms and polyhedral nanoparticles synthesized by the extracts containing mainly flavonoids, terpenes, and phenols (the main compounds of resins) were also confirmed. EDS analysis was used to analyze the composition of the nanoparticles. It was proven that by choosing the right plant extract and using the appropriate technology with extract treatment, it is possible to prepare nanoparticles of different shapes.

A Review of Microalgal Biofilm Technologies: Definition, Applications, Settings and Analysis

Biofilm-based algal cultivation has many advantages over the conventional suspended growth methods and has received increased attention as a potential platform for algal production, wastewater treatment (nutrient removal), and a potential pathway to supply feedstock for microalgae-based biorefinery attempts. However, the attached cultivation by definition and application is a result of a complex interaction between the biotic and abiotic components involved. Therefore, the entire understanding of the biofilm nature is still a research challenge due to the need for real-time analysis of the system. In this review, the state of the art of biofilm definition, its life cycle, the proposed designs of bioreactors, screening of carrier materials, and non-destructive techniques for the study of biofilm formation and performance are summarized. Perspectives for future research needs are also discussed to provide a primary reference for the further development of microalgal biofilm systems.

Acclimation to a broad range of nitrate strength on a euryhaline marine microalga Tetraselmis subcordiformis for photosynthetic nitrate removal and high-quality biomass production

Industrial wastewaters usually possess a wide range of nitrate strength. Microalgae-based nitrate-rich wastewater treatment could realize nitrate recovery along with CO₂ sequestration for sustainable biomass production, but the low tolerance of the microalgal strains to high-strength nitrate restricted the treatment process. The present study comprehensively evaluated a euryhaline marine microalga Tetraselmis subcordiformis for photosynthetic nitrate removal and biomass production in synthetic wastewater with a broad range of nitrate strength (0.24-7.0 g NO₃^--N/L). This alga could acclimate to high nitrate strength up to 3.5 g NO₃^--N/L (HN) without compromising biomass production. Nitrate could be completely removed within four days when low nitrate (0.24 g NO₃^--N/L, LN) was loaded. The maximum nitrate removal rate of 331 mg N/L/day and specific nitrate removal rate of 360 mg N/day/g cell was obtained under medium nitrate condition (1.8 g NO₃^--N/L, MN). High-nitrate stress under 7.0 g NO₃^--N/L (SHN) caused an increased light energy dissipation while decreased the density of photosystem II active reaction center, which partially protect the cells from photodamage and contributed to their acclimation to SHN. The algae also enhanced amino acid/fatty acid proportions essential for maintaining intracellular redox states to cope with the stress caused by LN or SHN. HN and SHN was in favor of protein accumulation and maintenance with enhanced proportion of essential amino acids, which entitled the algal biomass to be of high quality for animal feed applied in livestock graziery and aquaculture. LN facilitated productive starch and lipid accumulation with good quality for biofuels production. The nitrate removal rate and biomass productivity exceeded most of the microalgae reported in literature under similar conditions, which highlighted Tetraselmis subcordiformis as a potent strain for flexible nitrate-rich wastewater remediation coupled with fast CO₂ bio-mitigation and high-quality biomass production for sustainable algal biorefinery.

Cultivation of the Acidophilic Microalgae Galdieria phlegrea with Wastewater: Process Yields

Algal based wastewater treatment offers the opportunity to recover, in the form of biomass, the nutrients and internal chemical energy of wastewater. Recently, there has been a growing interest in the use of extremophilic microalgae, as they can easily adapt to difficult and often pollutant-rich environments. The thermo-acidophilic microalga Galdieria phlegrea is a species of recent discovery and great metabolic versatility, but it has still been poorly studied. Here, G. phlegrea was cultivated using raw municipal wastewater in 1 L Erlenmeyer flasks with 700 mL working volume at 37 °C for up to nine days. During the cultivation phase, biomass growth, phycocyanin content, ammonium and phosphate removal from the wastewater, lipid fraction, total carbon and nitrogen in the biomass, and variation in δ¹³C and δ¹⁵N isotopic ratios (a novel analytical contribution in these experiments) were monitored. Results indicated that G. phlegrea was able to grow in raw effluent, where it removed more than 50% ammonium and 20% phosphate in 24 h; total lipid content was in the range of 11–22%, while average C-N content was of 45% and 6%, respectively; isotopic analyses proved to be a useful support in identifying C and N metabolic pathways from effluent to biomass. Overall, G. phlegrea showed consistent performance with similar Cyanidiophyceae and is a potentially viable candidate for municipal wastewater valorization from a circular economy perspective.

Comparison of Galdieria growth and photosynthetic activity in different culture systems

In the last years, the acidothermophilic red microalga Galdieria sulphuraria has been increasingly studied for industrial applications such as wastewater treatment, recovery of rare earth elements, production of phycobilins. However, even now it is not possible an industrial cultivation of this organism because biotechnological research on G. sulphuraria and allied species is relatively recent and fragmented. Having in mind a possible scale-up for commercial applications, we have compared the growth and photosynthetic performance of G. sulphuraria in four suspended systems (Inclined bubble column, Decanter Laboratory Flask, Tubular Bioreactor, Ultra-flat plate bioreactor) and one immobilized system (Twin Layer Sytem). The results showed that G. sulphuraria had the highest growth, productivity and photosynthetic performance, when grown on the immobilized system, which also offers some economics advantages.

Effect of carbon-to-nitrogen ratio on simultaneous nitrification denitrification and phosphorus removal in a microaerobic moving bed biofilm reactor

In this study, long-term simultaneous nitrification denitrification (SND) and phosphorous removal were investigated in a continuous-flow microaerobic MBBR (mMBBR) operated at a dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration of 1.0 (±0.2) mg L^-1. The mMBBR performance was evaluated at different feed carbon-to-nitrogen (C/N) ratios (2.7, 4.2 and 5.6) and HRTs (2 days and 1 day). Stable long-term mMBBR operation and chemical oxygen demand (COD), total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) and phosphorous (P-PO₄^3-) removal efficiencies up to 100%, 68% and 72%, respectively, were observed at a feed C/N ratio of 4.2. Lower TIN removal efficiency and unstable performance were observed at feed C/N ratios of 2.7 and 5.6, respectively. HRT decrease from 2 days to 1 day resulted in transient NH₄⁺ accumulation and higher NO₂^-/NO₃^- ratio in the effluent. Batch activity tests showed that biofilm cultivation at a feed C/N ratio of 4.2 resulted in the highest denitrifying activity (189 mg N gVSS^-1 d^-1), whereas the highest nitrifying activity (316 mg N gVSS^-1 d^-1) was observed after cultivation at a feed C/N ratio of 2.7. Thermodynamic modeling with Visual MINTEQ and stoichiometric evaluations revealed that P removal was mainly biological and can be attributed to the P-accumulating capacity of denitrifying bacteria.

Nutrient removal efficiency of green algal strains at high phosphate concentrations

The effects of autotrophic and mixotrophic conditions on microalgae growth and nutrient removal efficiency from synthetic wastewater by different microalgae were investigated. Although several studies have demonstrated the suitability of microalgae technologies for ammonia-rich wastewater treatment, only a few have been used for treatment of phosphate-rich industrial wastewaters. In this work, six microalgae were cultivated in batch mode in a growth medium with a high phosphate concentration (0.74 Mm PO₄ ^3--P) and different carbon sources (ammonium acetate and sodium bicarbonate) without CO₂ supplementation or pH adjustment. Their potential for nutrient removal and biomass generation was estimated. The biomass growth in the reactors was modeled and the data aligned to the Verhulst model with R² > 0.93 in all cases. Chlorella pyrenoidosa ACUF_808 showed the highest final biomass productivity of 106.21 and 75.71 mg·L^-1·d^-1 in media with inorganic and organic carbon sources, respectively. The highest phosphorus removal efficiency was 32% with Chlorella vulgaris ACUF_809, while the nitrate removal efficiency in all reactors exceeded 93%. The coupled cultivation of the novel isolated strains of C. pyrenoidosa and C. vulgaris under mixotrophic conditions supplemented with ammonium acetate might be a promising solution for simultaneous nitrate and phosphate removal from phosphorus-rich wastewaters.
