A Comparative Study on the Adsorption of Eriochrome Black T Dye from Aqueous Solution on Graphene and Acid-Modified Graphene

Powdered silk: A promising biopolymer for the treatment of dye contaminated water

Discharge of textile dye effluents into water bodies is creating stress to aquatic life and contaminating water resources. In this study, a new biopolymer adsorbent silk fibroin (SF) was prepared from Bombyx mori silk fibroin (SF) and used for removal of Solochrome Black-T (SB-T) from water. This innovative adsorbent exhibits an exceptional adsorption capacity of 20.08 mg/g, achieving a removal efficiency of approximately 98.6 % within 60 min. Notably, the powdered SF adsorbent demonstrates rapid kinetics, surpassing the performance of previously reported similar adsorbents in adsorption capacity and reaction speed. The molecular weight and particle diameter of the material were observed to be > 1.243 kDa and 3 μm, respectively. The experimental investigations were performed on different parameters, viz., adsorbent dosage, contact time, repeatability, and desorption-adsorption study. The experimental data well fit for the Langmuir model (R2 = 0.937, qmax = 20.08 mg/g) and the pseudo-second-order kinetics (R2 = 0.921 and qe = 1.496 mg/g). Compared to the adsorbents reported in the literature, the newly prepared SF showed high adsorption capacity and faster kinetics to address real-life situations. The novelty of this work extends beyond its remarkable adsorption capabilities. The SF adsorbent offers a cost-effective, sustainable solution and regenerable adsorption material with minimal negative environmental impacts. This regenerability, with its versatility and broad applicability, positions powdered SF fibroin as a transformative technology in water treatment and environmental protection.

Textural properties and adsorption behavior of Zn-Mg-Al layered double hydroxide upon crystal violet dye removal as a low cost, effective, and recyclable adsorbent

The preparation of adsorbents plays a vital role in the adsorption method. In particular, many adsorbents with high specific surface areas and unique shapes are essential for the adsorption strategy. A Zn-Mg-Al/layer double hydroxide (LDH) was designed in this study using a simple co-precipitation process. Adsorbent based on Zn-Mg-Al/LDH was used to remove crystal violet (CV) from the wastewater. The impacts of the initial dye concentration, pH, and temperature on CV adsorption performance were systematically examined. The adsorbents were analyzed both before and after adsorption using FTIR, XRD, and SEM. The roughness parameters and surface morphologies of the produced LDH were estimated using 3D SEM images. Under the best conditions (dose of adsorbent = 0.07 g and pH = 9), the maximum adsorption capacity has been achieved. Adsorption kinetics studies revealed that the reaction that led to the adsorption of CV dye onto Zn-Mg-Al/LDH was a pseudo-second-order model. Additionally, intraparticle diffusion suggests that Zn-Mg-Al/LDH has a fast diffusion constant for CV molecules (0.251 mg/(g min^1/2)). Furthermore, as predicted by the Langmuir model, the maximal Zn-Mg-Al/LDH adsorption capacity of CV was 64.80 mg/g. The CV dimensionless separation factor (R_L) onto Zn-Mg-Al/LDH was 0.769, indicating that adsorption was favorable. The effect of temperature was performed at 25, 35, and 45 °C in order to establish the thermodynamic parameters ∆H^o, ∆S^o, and ∆G^o. The computed values indicated exothermic and spontaneous adsorption processes. The study presented here might be used to develop new adsorbents with enhanced adsorption capabilities for the purpose of protecting the water environment.

Application of MXene-based materials in Fenton-like systems for organic wastewater treatment: A review

Recently, Fenton-like systems have been widely explored and applied for the removal of organic matter from wastewater. Two-dimensional (2D) MXene-based materials exhibit excellent adsorption and catalysis capacity for organic pollutants removal, which has been reported widely. However, there is no summary on the application of MXene-based materials in Fenton-like systems for organic matter removal. In this review, four types of MXene-based materials were introduced, including 2D MXene, MXene/Metal complex, MXene/Metal oxide complex, and MXene/3D carbon material complex. In addition, the Fenton-like system usually consists of adsorption and degradation processes. The oxidation process might contain hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) or persulfate (PS) oxidants. This review summarizes the performance and mechanisms of organic pollutants adsorption and oxidants activation by MXene-based materials systematically. Finally, the existing problems and future research directions of MXene-based materials are proposed in Fenton-like wastewater treatment systems.

Polyethylene glycol capped copper ferrite porous nanostructured materials for efficient photocatalytic degradation of bromophenol blue

Three different types (blank, annealed, and functionalized) of copper ferrite nanoparticles (CuFe₂O₄) were synthesized by the co-precipitation method. The CuFe₂O₄ NPs were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) techniques. FTIR analysis confirmed that 3-APTES is successfully grafted on the surface of CuFe₂O₄ NPs. XRD results show the amorphous nature of blank CuFe₂O₄ NPs, and crystalline structure was observed for annealed and functionalized CuFe₂O₄ NPs. XRD results revealed that crystallite size ranges from 23.6 to 34.6 nm. SEM micrographs of blank CuFe₂O₄ NPs show the irregular shape and size of the nanostructure. The spherical and strongly linked structure was seen in the micrograph of functionalized CuFe₂O₄ NPs. EDX analysis revealed the nanostructure composed of Fe, Cu, O, and a small percentage of Si. The photocatalytic degradation efficiency of synthesized CuFe₂O₄ NPs was examined under UV irradiation in an aqueous medium against bromophenol blue (BPB) dye. The effect of different parameters such as irradiation time and pH on the photodegradation of BPB dye was studied by all three types of CuFe₂O₄ photocatalyst. Results show that the maximum photocatalytic degradation efficiency was observed for functionalized CuFe₂O₄ nanoparticles that degraded 98% of BPB dye in the acidic medium at pH = 1. The optimum contact time for dye degradation was 120 min by synthesized photocatalyst. Photodegradation performance of blank and annealed CuFe₂O₄ NPs is less than 90%. The synthesized CuFe₂O₄ NPs were recycled and reused, which shows good photocatalytic degradation efficiency up to 4 consecutive cycles. The kinetic model displayed that degradation reaction followed pseudo 1^st order kinetics. The blank, annealed, and functionalized CuFe₂O₄ NPs have turnover numbers of 10.7x10 (Mudhoo et al., 2019), 12.9x10 (Mudhoo et al., 2019), and 22.2x10 (Mudhoo et al., 2019) (kg^-1 sec^-1) accordingly. In conclusion, all results revealed the high efficiency of prepared photocatalyst for tested hazardous dye from wastewater and encouraged more work on photodegradation of organic pollutants from wastewater.

Simultaneous removal of arsenate and arsenite in water using a novel functional halloysite nanotube composite

This work aims at exploring a novel environment-friendly nanomaterial based on natural clay minerals for arsenic removal in aqueous samples. Halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) were selected as the substrate with Mn oxides loaded on the surface to enhance its arsenic adsorption ability and then grafted onto the SiO₂-coated Fe₃O₄ microsphere to get a just enough magnetic performance facilitating the material's post-treatment. The prepared composite (Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@Mn-HNTs) was extensively characterized by various instruments including Fourier transform infrared spectroscope (FTIR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TG), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscope (XPS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Batch experiments were carried out to get the optimum test conditions for arsenic adsorption by the composite, including pH, loading amount of Mn oxides, adsorbent dosage, and the co-existing ions. The adsorption of As^III and As^V on Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@Mn-HNTs were both well fitted with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model as well as the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model revealing the chemisorption between arsenic and Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@Mn-HNTs. The adsorption process of As^III and As^V were both endothermic and spontaneous displayed by the thermodynamic study. The capacities of the prepared composite are 3.28 mg g^-1 for As^III and 3.52 mg g^-1 for As^V, respectively, which are comparable or better than those of many reported materials in the references. Toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) and synthetic precipitation leaching procedure (SPLP) tests were carried out to access the secondary environmental risk of the composite and showed that it was quite environmentally stable and can be safely disposed. The composite was successfully applied in environmental water samples indicating its great potential applicability in future.

Enhanced removal of Eriochrome Black T from water using biochar/layered double hydroxide/chitosan hybrid composite: Performance evaluation and optimization using BBD-RSM approach

In this research work, a novel hybrid composite consisting of biochar (B), layered double hydroxide (CuFe) and chitosan (CS) (B-CuFe-CS) was produced using an ultrasonication-assisted co-precipitation method. The resultant composite was employed for adsorptive removal of Eriochrome black T (EBT) from water. Physicochemical characterization indicated that the B-CuFe-CS containing 10 wt % CS exhibited a heterogeneous structure with better crystallographic and textural characteristics. The B-CuFe-CS with abundant surface functionalities (-CO, -C-O, -OH, -NO_3, and MMO), facilitates faster and enhanced removal of the EBT. The kinetic results showed better fitting to the pseudo-second order model, and equilibrium was achieved within 30 min. Equilibrium data was well explained by Langmuir and Redlich Peterson isotherm models (R² > 0.98), indicating the EBT removal onto B-CuFe-CS followed monolayer adsorption. The maximum adsorption capacity was 806.4 mg/g, which was higher than pristine B-CuFe (476.19 mg/g) and many other adsorbents. The spectroscopic analysis (FTIR and XPS) and experimental results suggested that EBT adsorption is mainly governed by electrostatic, chemical and anion-exchange interactions. It is evident from these results that coupling B-CuFe composite with bio-filler (chitosan) resulted in an efficient bio-adsorbent to effectively purify dye-contaminated water streams.

Adsorptive and photocatalytic remediation of hazardous organic chemical pollutants in aqueous medium: A review

The provision of clean water is still a major challenge in developing parts of the world, as emphasized by the United Nation Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 6), and has remained a subject of extensive research globally. Advancements in science and industry have resulted in a massive surge in the amount of industrial chemicals produced within the last few decades. Persistent and emerging organic pollutants are detected in aquatic environments, and conventional wastewater treatment plants have ineffectively handled these trace, bioaccumulative and toxic compounds. Therefore, we have conducted an extensive bibliometric analysis of different materials utilized to combat organic pollutants via adsorption and photocatalysis. The classes of pollutants, material synthesis, mechanisms of interaction, merits, and challenges were comprehensively discussed. The paper highlights the advantages of various materials used in the removal of hazardous pollutants from wastewater with activated carbon having the highest adsorption capacity. Dyes, pharmaceuticals, endocrine-disrupting chemicals, pesticides and other recalcitrant organic pollutants have been successfully removed at high degradation efficiencies through the photocatalytic process. The photocatalytic degradation and adsorption processes were compared by considering factors such as cost, efficiency, ease of application and reusability. This review will be good resource material for water treatment professionals/scientists, who may be interested in adsorptive and photocatalytic remediation of organic chemicals pollutants.

Plant microbe based remediation approaches in dye removal: A review

Increased industrialization demand using synthetic dyes in the newspaper, cosmetics, textiles, food, and leather industries. As a consequence, harmful chemicals from dye industries are released into water reservoirs with numerous structural components of synthetic dyes, which are hazardous to the ecosystem, plants and humans. The discharge of synthetic dye into various aquatic environments has a detrimental effect on the balance and integrity of ecological systems. Moreover, numerous inorganic dyes exhibit tolerance to degradation and repair by natural and conventional processes. So, the present condition requires the development of efficient and effective waste management systems that do not exacerbate environmental stress or endanger other living forms. Numerous biological systems, including microbes and plants, have been studied for their ability to metabolize dyestuffs. To minimize environmental impact, bioremediation uses endophytic bacteria, which are plant beneficial bacteria that dwell within plants and may improve plant development in both normal and stressful environments. Moreover, Phytoremediation is suitable for treating dye contaminants produced from a wide range of sources. This review article proves a comprehensive evaluation of the most frequently utilized plant and microbes as dye removal technologies from dye-containing industrial effluents. Furthermore, this study examines current existing technologies and proposes a more efficient, cost-effective method for dye removal and decolorization on a big scale. This study also aims to focus on advanced degradation techniques combined with biological approaches, well regarded as extremely effective treatments for recalcitrant wastewater, with the greatest industrial potential.

Synthesis and evaluation of Ca-doped ferrihydrite as a novel adsorbent for the efficient removal of fluoride

Ferric hydrate has been extensively applied for the removal of various types of pollutants from wastewater because of its low cost and high efficiency. However, its wide-scale application has been greatly restricted by high-dose and low-adsorption capacity. Therefore, a novel Ca-doped ferrihydrite adsorbent has been synthesized and used for the enhanced removal of fluoride from wastewater in the presence of other co-existing ions. At 5 mg/L initial fluoride concentration and pH 5, the removal efficiency of fluoride approached to 97.5% and remained stable. Similarly, with the increase of dose from 100 to 300 mg/L, the fluoride removal linearly increased to 98% and remained plateau at neutral pH. Also, the presence of co-existing ions such as NO₃^-, SO₄^2-, Cl^-, and natural organic matter has not significantly influenced the removal performance of the adsorbent. Fluoride removal best fit the pseudo-second-order reaction kinetics and Langmuir isotherm model. The prepared adsorbent exhibited a maximum adsorption capacity of 53.21 mg/g for fluoride uptake from water. The SEM-EDX confirmed the doping of Ca onto the ferrihydrite where the elemental peaks of Ca and Fe emerged at the energy value of about 3.6 Kev and 7.1 Kev respectively in EDX analysis. In addition, SEM results of Ca-doped ferrihydrite adsorbent illustrated that a large microplates type of products was acquired after synthesis. The regeneration results confirmed that adsorbent could retain their original adsorption capacity after five regeneration cycles. The current study suggested that Ca-doped ferrihydrite has the application potential for the enhanced adsorption of fluoride from the water phase.

Process Optimization and Modeling of Phenol Adsorption onto Sludge-Based Activated Carbon Intercalated MgAlFe Ternary Layered Double Hydroxide Composite

A sewage sludge-based activated carbon (SBAC) intercalated MgAlFe ternary layered double hydroxide (SBAC-MgAlFe-LDH) composite was synthesized via the coprecipitation method. The adsorptive performance of the composite for phenol uptake from the aqueous phase was evaluated via the response surface methodology (RSM) modeling technique. The SBAC-MgAlFe-LDH phenol uptake capacity data were well-fitted to reduced RSM cubic model (R² = 0.995, R²-adjusted = 0.993, R²-predicted = 0.959 and p-values < 0.05). The optimum phenol adsorption onto the SBAC-MgAlFe-LDH was achieved at 35 °C, 125 mg/L phenol, and pH 6. Under the optimal phenol uptake conditions, pseudo-first-order and Avrami fractional-order models provided a better representation of the phenol uptake kinetic data, while the equilibrium data models’ fitting follows the order; Liu > Langmuir > Redlich–Peterson > Freundlich > Temkin. The phenol uptake mechanism was endothermic in nature and predominantly via a physisorption process (ΔG° = −5.33 to −5.77 kJ/mol) with the involvement of π–π interactions between the phenol molecules and the functionalities on the SBAC-LDH surface. The maximum uptake capacity (216.76 mg/g) of SBAC-MgAlFe-LDH was much higher than many other SBAC-based adsorbents. The improved uptake capacity of SBAC-LDH was attributed to the effective synergetic influence of SBAC-MgAlFe-LDH, which yielded abundant functionalized surface groups that favored higher aqueous phase uptake of phenol molecules. Nano and micro architectured cues as smart materials to mitigate recalcitrant pharmaceutical pollutants from wastewater

Pharmaceuticals have been recognized for saving billions of lives, but they also appear as a novel group of environmental pollutants. The presence of pharmaceutically active residues in seawater, surface water, wastewater treatment plants, sludges, and soils has been widely reported. Their persistence in the environment for extended durations exerts various adverse consequences, such as gene toxicity, hormonal interference, antibiotic resistance, sex organs imposition, and many others. Various methodologies have been envisioned for their removal from the aqueous media. Different processes have been restricted due to high cost, inefficient removal, generation of toxic materials, and high capital requirement. The employment of nanostructured materials to mitigate pharmaceutical contaminants has been increasing during the last decades. The adsorptive nanomaterials have a high surface area, low cost, eco-friendliness, and high affinity for inorganic and organic molecules. In this review, we have documented the rising concerns of environmental pharmaceutical contamination and their remediation by applications of nanomaterials. Nanomaterials could be a robust candidate for the removal of an array of environmental contaminants in water.

Utilization of Ag2O-Al2O3-ZrO2 decorated onto rGO as adsorbent for the removal of Congo red from aqueous solution

The water resources contamination in an alarming concern for sustainable environment. This has led to development of new technologies and materials for waste water detoxification. In the present study, we have fabricated novel trimetallic based mixed oxides decorated reduced graphene oxide (rGO) composite using facile microwave method and utilized it as an adsorbent for the removal of congo red dye from aqueous solution. The final composite showed highly agglomerated metal oxides present on the rGO surface. The high surface area and activity of the synthesized adsorbent resulted in its high adsorption capacity of 333.32 mg/g for congo red. The Langmuir model better explained the isotherm data indicating the monolayer adsorption of congo red molecules onto Ag₂O-Al₂O₃-ZrO₂/rGO surface. The grander adsorption ability of Ag₂O-Al₂O₃-ZrO₂/rGO towards organic dye indicate its probable utilization in the removal of other dyes also from wastewater.

Design and synthesis of amine grafted graphene oxide encapsulated chitosan hybrid beads for defluoridation of water

The promising adsorbent like graphene oxide (GO), chitosan (CS) and amine functionalized graphene oxide (AGO) decorated chitosan (CS) namely AGO@CS composite beads was efficiently prepared for defluoridation studies. The prepared AGO@CS composite beads possess enriched defluoridation capacity (DC) of 4650 mgF^- kg^-1. Batch method was used to optimize the maximum DC of AGO@CS composite beads. The physicochemical properties of AGO@CS composite beads were explored by numerous instrumental techniques viz., FTIR, Raman, XPS, SEM and TGA investigation. The experimental values of AGO@CS composite beads for fluoride removal at various temperature conditions were assessed with adsorption isotherms, kinetic and thermodynamic studies. The possible defluoridation mechanism of AGO@CS beads was mostly proposed that electrostatic attraction. The reusability and field investigation results of AGO@CS beads shows they are regenerable and applicable at field circumstances.

Decolorization and discovery of metabolic pathway for the degradation of Mordant Black 11 dye by Klebsiella sp. MB398

Extensive utilization of the synthetic dyes in various industries is leading to water and soil contamination and ultimately impacting the humans. A research study was conducted for investigating the biodecolorization and biotransformation of Mordant Black 11 dye. For this purpose, potential of biofilm forming bacteria Klebsiella pneumoniae MB398 isolated from effluent outlets of Tops Food Industry, Hattar, Pakistan, was assessed to decolorize and transform Mordant Black 11 dye. Bacterial strain MB398 exhibited the capability of growing optimally at acidic pH (pH 6.0). Klebsiella pneumoniae MB398 efficiently decolorized Mordant Black 11 dye (64.55%) in aerobic environment at pH 6.0 and 37 °C over 24 h, which further increased to 75.35% over a period of 72 h of incubation. Strain MB398 also exhibited the capability of decolorizing Mordant Black 11 dye in the presence of cadmium (63.71%), chromium (61.78%), and copper (61.50%), respectively. UV-VIS spectrophotometric analysis, FTIR, and HPLC spectra were also indicative of biotransformation of dye molecules by Klebsiella pneumoniae MB398. GC-MS analysis of Mordant Black 11 dye revealed formation of 9 novel and unique metabolites including phenol,2,4-bis(1,1-dimethylethyl); 9-eicosene, (E); ethanol,2,2-(2-propenyloxy); acetic acid, benzene; 1-naphthol; methyl formate; valeraldehyde,2,4-dimethyl; and 7-hexadecene (Z). A possible metabolic pathway depicting the biotransformation of Mordant Black 11 dye by Klebsiella pneumoniae MB398 was projected. Findings of the current research study strongly suggest application of Klebsiella pneumoniae MB398 for developing large scale bioremediation strategies for the abatement of synthetic dyes to retain environmental sustainability in bioeconomic way.

The cross-talk between lateral sheet dimensions of pristine graphene oxide nanoparticles and Ni2+ adsorption

This study investigated the removal of nickel(ii) ions by using two sizes of graphene oxide nanoparticles (GO - 450 nm and GO - 200 nm). The thickness and lateral sheet dimensions of GO are considered to be an important adsorbent and promising method for sufficient removal of metals like nickel, lead, copper, etc. The graphite oxide was prepared by oxidation-reduction reaction (Hummers method), and the final product was labelled as GO - 450 nm. A tip sonicator was used to reduce the size of particles to 200 nm under controlled conditions (time and power of sonication). FTIR spectroscopy shows that both sizes of GO particles contain several types of oxygen groups distributed onto the surface of GO particles. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the statistical analysis confirmed the formation of these two sizes of GO particles. The GO - 200 nm performed better removal of Ni(ii) compared with GO - 450 nm, due to more surfaces being available. The adsorption capacity of GO particles increased drastically from 45 mg g-1 to 75 mg g-1 for GO - 450 nm and GO - 200 nm respectively, these values were carried out after 2 h of incubation. The kinetics of adsorption and several parameters like initial concentration at equilibrium, pH, temperature, and adsorbent dose are controlled and studied by using UV-visible spectroscopy. The results indicated a significant potential of GO - 200 nm as an adsorbent for Ni(ii) ion removal. An additional experiment was performed to estimate the surface area of GO - 450 nm and GO - 200 nm, the results show that the surface areas of GO - 450 nm and GO - 200 nm are 747.8 m2 g-1 and 1052.2 m2 g-1 respectively.

Boron nitride-based materials for water purification: Progress and outlook

Analogous to the carbon family, boron nitride (BN)-based materials have gained considerable attention in recent times for applications in various fields. Owing to their extraordinary characteristics, i.e., high surface area, low density, superior thermal stability, mechanical strength, and conductivity, excellent corrosion, and oxidation resistance, the BN nanomaterials have been explored in water remediation. This article critically evaluates the latest development in applications of BN-based materials in water purification with focus on adsorption, synthesis of novel membranes and photocatalytic degradation of pollutants. The adsorption of various noxious pollutants, i.e., dyes, organic compounds, antibiotics, and heavy metals from aqueous medium BN-based materials are described in detail by illustrating the adsorption mechanism and regeneration potential. The major hurdles and opportunities related to the synthesis and water purification applications of BN-based materials are underscored. Finally, a roadmap is suggested for future research to assure the effective applications of BN-based materials in water purification. This review is beneficial in understanding the current status of these unique materials in water purification and accelerating the research focusing their future water remediation applications.

Fabrication of Zn-based magnetic zeolitic imidazolate framework bionanocomposite using basil seed mucilage for removal of azo cationic and anionic dyes from aqueous solution

The Basil seeds mucilaginous polysaccharide exhibits remarkable physical and chemical properties like high water-absorbing capacity, emulsifying, and stabilizing properties. The metal-organic frameworks are one of the most promising precursors made of metal clusters and organic connectors for the fabrication of advanced adsorbents due to their unique properties. In this study, the bionanocomposite of magnetic zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 was successfully synthesized and applied to adsorb azo cationic and anionic dyes. The synthesized magnetite nanoparticles were pretreated with mucilage extracted from basil seeds to acquire negatively charged magnetite surface, followed by nucleation through attracting zinc cation, and then the growth of metal-organic frameworks which yields high-quality ZIF-8 crystals. The samples were characterized by Field Scanning Electron Microscopy, X-ray Diffraction, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometry, vibrating sample magnetometer, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area analysis. In the process of adsorption, influencing factors and recycling regeneration were discussed, and the adsorption mechanisms such as kinetics, isotherm, and thermodynamics were explored. The results of the adsorption process showed that maximum adsorption capacities were 9.09 and 13.21 mg/g for Methylene blue and Eriochrome Black T, respectively. The excellent reusability combined with its magnetic separation property makes the nanocomposite a promising adsorbent for the removal of cationic and anionic dyes.

Performance Comparison of Eichhornia crassipes and Salvinia natans on Azo-Dye (Eriochrome Black T) Phytoremediation

Organic pollutants, such as dyes, have a negative effect on the aqueous environment, therefore, their elimination from water bodies is a high priority. In this work, Eichhornia crassipes and Salvinia natans, both model plants with high phytoremediation efficiency, were exposed to various concentrations (Ci = 50–500 mg/L) of Eriochrome Black T (EBT). Their capacity to assimilate EBT was studied for 16 days of exposure, similar to natural conditions and by spectrophotometric monitoring of the dye concentration (EE. crassipes; 150 mg/L = 33%; ES. natans; 150 mg/L = 71.5%). The changes of the experimental parameters (pH—equalised by day 5, temperature, humidity, light intensity) were followed, and plant growth and biochemical responses to toxic stress effects (photosynthetic pigments, Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX)—decreased effect of P, Mg, Ca, S and K, Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), defense enzyme) were examined. Furthermore, changes in oxidative- and photo-degradation of EBT in time and the solid-state properties (SEM, EDX, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy-FTIR) of the dye were investigated. Our results demonstrate that, despite the toxic stress, both species succeeded in reducing the dye-concentration of the water and S. natans proved to be more efficient in binding and removing organic dyes. With our findings, we proved that both plants alleviated the abiotic stress of dye contamination.

Enhanced removal of Eriochrome Black T in wastewater by zirconium-based MOF/graphene oxide

The zirconium-based MOF/graphene oxide (UiO-66-NH2/GO) composites were prepared by ultrasonic dispersing different amounts of graphene oxide (GO) in a well-dissolved zirconium tetrachloride/H2BDC-NH2 mixture, obtaining 2 wt% (UiO-66-NH2/GO-1), 5 wt% (UiO-66-NH2/GO-2), and 10 wt% (UiO-66-NH2/GO-3) GO composites. The products were characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM, BET, Raman, UV, XPS, and Zeta potential. Adsorption experiments on simulated Eriochrome Black T (EBT) printing and dyeing wastewater were carried out using UiO-66-NH2/GO, and the optimal conditions for adsorption were obtained by exploring the effects of initial EBT concentration, time, pH, and salt ionic strength. Adsorption isotherms, kinetics, mechanism, and regeneration were also researched. The adsorption behavior was consistent with the Langmuir isotherm and fully compliant with pseudo secondary dynamics model. The adsorption capacity of UiO-66-NH2/GO-2 was found to be the highest of the three products, which was 263.158 mg/g. Therefore, the UiO-66-NH2/GO-2 composite was considered to be an excellent adsorbent for the adsorption of EBT from organic dye wastewater.

Graphene-based adsorbents for the removal of toxic organic pollutants: A review

The synthesis and application of efficient materials for remediation of environmental contaminants from water is an emerging area of research. Graphene has received tremendous attention in various fields due to its exceptional properties. Graphene and its derivatives have also been extensively explored for the adsorptive removal of pollutants from water. The recent trends are inclined toward functionalization of graphene-based materials to get the advantage of their improved properties. The functionalized graphene materials are efficient due to their enhanced properties resulting from synergistic effects. This article reviews the synthesis and application of graphene-based adsorbents for the removal of organic pollutants from water. A critical account is provided on synthesis methods, applications, adsorption mechanisms, the figure of merits, and removal performances. The accomplishments, limitations, challenges, and future research directions are also highlighted.

Response surface methodology directed synthesis of luminescent nanocomposite hydrogel for trapping anionic dyes

The present research work reveals semi-interpenetrating network (semi-IPN) synthesis using response surface methodology-central composite design (RSM-CCD) based optimization. The maximum swelling of 362.11% was obtained with monomer, crosslinker and initiator concentrations 4.39 mol L^-1, 1.52 mol L^-1 and 4.58 mol L^-1, respectively, temperature 70 °C, time 3 h and pH 4.0. The synthesized hydrogel showed 94.16% and 95.62% removal for eosin yellow (EY) and eriochrome black-T (EBT) dyes, respectively. The incorporation of cadmium sulphide nanodots into the hydrogel network enhanced the % dye removal (96.82% EY and 98.73% EBT) along with fluorescent behavior. Various conditions optimized for EY and EBT dye removal with respect to semi-IPN were: 0.4 g adsorbent dose each, dye concentrations 10 mg L^-1 and 120 mg L^-1, contact time 24 h each, respectively. Adsorption studies followed langmuir theory for both dyes. Second order and first order kinetics along with intraparticle diffusion of dye molecules were favorable to EY and EBT, respectively. Thermodynamic study reveals exothermic nature of adsorption. Recyclability of the adsorbent is superior as tested by desorption-adsorption tests.
