Thermal and combustion behavior of phosphorus–nitrogen and phosphorus–silicon retarded epoxy

Synthesis and characterization of PEDMCD as a flame retardant and its application in epoxy resins

In this study, a highly effective flame retardant agent, called polybicyclopentaerythritol phosphate-O-4-imino-p-phenylmethane-4-imino-2-chloro-1,3,5-s-triazine (PEDMCD), has been prepared through a direct polycondensation reaction. PEDMCD was incorporated into epoxy resin (EP) to improve the flame retardancy of EP. The molecular structure and thermal stability of PEDMCD were analyzed by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Further, the structural properties, composition, and thermal stability of the PEDMCD/EP composite were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). PEDMCD exhibited both high thermal stability and high flame-retardant performance; these properties were attributed to the phosphorus-containing structure on the side groups and a triazine structure as the molecular backbone, which played the role of a foaming carbon source. With the addition of PEDMCD, the flame-retardant behavior of PEDMCD/EP composites was gradually enhanced. Furthermore, the amount of char residue of the PEDMCD/EP composite at 500 °C was increased from 21% to 34%. The peak value of the mass loss rate of PEDMCD/EP decreased from 0.52 to 0.35 g s-1. Further, the TSP of the sample decreased from 44.2 m2 to 24.6 m2, and the total oxygen consumption decreased from 64.2 g to 30.4 g. Accordingly, owing to the incorporation of PEDMCD, EP begins to decompose sooner, and the carbon layer formed by decomposition reduces the decomposition rate of the EP matrix. Based on the results of characterization measurements and flame retardancy testing, it is confirmed that PEDMCD exhibits good flame retardancy when applied in EP.

Synthesis of a phosphoramidate flame retardant and its flame retardancy on cotton fabrics

A phosphoramidate flame retardant (dimethyl N,N-bis(2-hydroxyletheyl)phosphoramidate, DMBHP) was synthesized and applied to cotton fabrics for enhancing the flame retardancy. The structure of DMBHP was characterized by FT-IR and NMR. The flame retardancy and combustion behavior of the treated cotton fabrics were evaluated using the vertical flammability test (VFT), limiting oxygen index (LOI), and the cone calorimetric test. Moreover, to further analyze the flame retardant action of DMBHP in cotton fabrics, thermal degradability of the treated fabrics, as well as the chemical structure, surface morphology, and element contents of the char residue of the DMBHP-treated fabrics were also evaluated. The results show that, after treating with DMBHP, the cotton fabrics acquired a LOI value from 18.1 to 31.1 with the concentration increasing to 30% and self-extinguished in VFT tests when treated with up to 15% DMBHP. Besides, the total heat release and the peak heat release rate of DMBHP (30%)-treated fabric decreased obviously compared with the pure cotton along with more residue retained. TG, SEM, and EDS results of treated cotton fabric and the corresponding residue after burning showed that DMBHP has the capability of enhancing char formation. In addition, DMBHP will confer cotton fabrics a certain durability against washing with the help of 1,2,3,4-butanetetracarboxylic acid (BTCA) and citric acid (CA).

Flame Retardant Epoxy Composites on the Road of Innovation: An Analysis with Flame Retardancy Index for Future Development

Nowadays, epoxy composites are elements of engineering materials and systems. Although they are known as versatile materials, epoxy resins suffer from high flammability. In this sense, flame retardancy analysis has been recognized as an undeniable requirement for developing future generations of epoxy-based systems. A considerable proportion of the literature on epoxy composites has been devoted to the use of phosphorus-based additives. Nevertheless, innovative flame retardants have coincidentally been under investigation to meet market requirements. This review paper attempts to give an overview of the research on flame retardant epoxy composites by classification of literature in terms of phosphorus (P), non-phosphorus (NP), and combinations of P/NP additives. A comprehensive set of data on cone calorimetry measurements applied on P-, NP-, and P/NP-incorporated epoxy systems was collected and treated. The performance of epoxy composites was qualitatively discussed as Poor, Good, and Excellent cases identified and distinguished by the use of the universal Flame Retardancy Index (FRI). Moreover, evaluations were rechecked by considering the UL-94 test data in four groups as V0, V1, V2, and nonrated (NR). The dimensionless FRI allowed for comparison between flame retardancy performances of epoxy composites. The results of this survey can pave the way for future innovations in developing flame-retardant additives for epoxy.

The application of a phosphorus nitrogen flame retardant curing agent in epoxy resin

In order to improve the compatibility of flame retardant and epoxy resin, a phosphorus nitrogen flame retardant curing agent poly(p-xylylenediamine spirocyclic pentaerythritol bisphosphonate) (PPXSPB) was synthesized. FTIR, 1HNMR, and mass spectroscopy were used to identify the chemical structure of PPXSPB. Epoxy resin (E-44) and PPXSPB as the raw material, a series of thermosetting systems were prepared. The effects of PPXSPB on flame retardancy, water resistance, thermal degradation behavior, mechanical properties and the adhesive strength of EP/PPXSPB thermosets were investigated. The results show that with the increase of phosphorus content, the oxygen index and carbon residue of the system both increased significantly, and the heat release rate gradually decreased, which is of great significance in delaying the occurrence of fire. When the phosphorus content is 3.24% in EP/PPXSPB thermosets, EP-2 can successfully pass the UL94 V-0 flammability rating, the LOI value of EP-2 can reach 31.4%, the impact strength and tensile strength was 6.58 kJ/m2 and 47.10 MPa respectively, and the adhesive strength was 13.79 MPa, the system presents a good overall performance.
