Adhesive properties of poly (methyl silsesquioxanes)/bio-based epoxy nanocomposites

Ultrasoft and High-Adhesion Block Copolymers for Neuromorphic Computing

The "von Neumann bottleneck" is a formidable challenge in conventional computing, driving exploration into artificial synapses. Organic semiconductor materials show promise but are hindered by issues such as poor adhesion and a high elastic modulus. Here, we combine polyisoindigo-bithiophene (PIID-2T) with grafted poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) to synthesize the triblock-conjugated polymer (PIID-2T-PDMS). The polymer exhibited substantial enhancements in adhesion (4.8-68.8 nN) and reductions in elastic modulus (1.6-0.58 GPa) while maintaining the electrical characteristics of PIID-2T. The three-terminal organic synaptic transistor (three-terminal p-type organic artificial synapse (TPOAS)), constructed using PIID-2T-PDMS, exhibits an unprecedented analog switching range of 276×, surpassing previous records, and a remarkable memory on-off ratio of 106. Moreover, the device displays outstanding operational stability, retaining 99.6% of its original current after 1600 write-read events in the air. Notably, TPOAS replicates key biological synaptic behaviors, including paired-pulse facilitation (PPF), short-term plasticity (STP), and long-term plasticity (LTP). Simulations using handwritten digital data sets reveal an impressive recognition accuracy of 91.7%. This study presents a polyisoindigo-bithiophene-based block copolymer that offers enhanced adhesion, reduced elastic modulus, and high-performance artificial synapses, paving the way for the next generation of neuromorphic computing systems.

The Flexural Strength Prediction of Carbon Fiber/Epoxy Composite Using Artificial Neural Network Approach

There is a developing demand for natural resources because of the growing population. Alternative materials have been developed to address these shortages, concentrating on characteristics such as durability and lightness. By researching composite materials, natural materials can be replaced. It is vital to consider the mechanical properties of composite materials when selecting them for a specific application. This study aims to measure the flexural strength of carbon fiber/epoxy composites. However, the cost of forming these composites is relatively high, given the expense of composite materials. Consequently, this study seeks to reduce molding costs by predicting flexural strength. Conducting many tests for each case is costly; therefore, it is necessary to discover an economical method. To accomplish this, the flexural strength of carbon fiber/epoxy composites was investigated using an artificial neural network (ANN) technique to reduce the expense of material testing. The output parameter investigated was flexural strength, while input parameters included ply orientation, manufacturing, width, thickness, and graphite filler percentage. The scope alternative was determined by identifying the values of variables that substantially affect the flexural strength. The prediction of flexural strength was deemed acceptable if the mean squared error (MSE) value was less than 0.001, and the coefficient of determination (R2) was greater than or equal to 0.95. The obtained results demonstrated an MSE of 0.003039 and an R2 value of 0.95274, indicating a low prediction error and high prediction accuracy for all flexural strength data. Thus, the outcomes of this study provide accurate predictions of flexural strength in the composite materials.

Challenges associated with cellulose composite material: Facet engineering and prospective

Cellulose is the most abundant polysaccharide on earth. It has a large number of desirable properties. Its low toxicity makes it more useful for a variety of applications. Nowadays, its composites are used in most engineering fields. Composite consists of a polymer matrix and use as a reinforcing material. By reducing the cost of traditional fibers, it has an increasing demand for environment-friendly purposes. The use of these types of composites is inherent in moisture absorption with hindered natural fibers. This determines the reduction of polymer composite material. By appropriate chemical surface treatment of cellulose composite materials, the effect could be diminished. The most modern and advanced techniques and methods for the preparation of cellulose and polymer composites are discussed here. Cellulosic composites show a reinforcing effect on the polymer matrix as pointed out by mechanical characterization. Researchers tried their hard work to study different ways of converting various agricultural by-products into useful eco-friendly polymer composites for sustainable production. Cellulose plays building blocks, that are critical for polymer products and their engineering applications. The most common method used to prepare composites is in-situ polymerization. This help to increase the yields of cellulosic composites with a significant enhancement in thermal stability and mechanical properties. Recently, cellulose composites used as enhancing the incorporation of inorganic materials in multi-functional properties. Furthermore, we have summarized in this review the potential applications of cellulose composites in different fields like packaging, aerogels, hydrogels, and fibers.

Synthesis, characterization and adsorption behavior of modified cellulose nanocrystals towards different cationic dyes

Green and efficient removal of polluted materials are essential for the sustainability of a clean and green environment. Nanomaterials, particularly cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), are abundant in nature and can be extracted from various sources, including cotton, rice, wheat, and plants. CNCs are renewable biomass materials with a high concentration of polar functional groups. This study used succinic anhydride to modify the surface of native cellulose nanocrystals (NCNCs). Succinic anhydride has been frequently used in adhesives and sealant chemicals for a long time, and here, it is evaluated for dye removal performance. The morphology and modification of CNCs studied using FTIR, TGA & DTG, XRD, SEM, AFM, and TEM. The ability of modified cellulose nanocrystals (MCNCs) to adsorb cationic golden yellow dye and methylene blue dye was investigated. The MCNCs exhibited high adsorption affinity for the two different cationic dyes. The maximum adsorption efficiency of NCNCs and MCNCs towards the cationic dye was 0.009 and 0.156 wt%. The investigation for adhesive properties is based on the strength and toughness of MCNCs. MCNCs demonstrated improved tensile strength (2350 MPa) and modulus (13.9 MPa) using E-51 epoxy system and a curing agent compared to 3 wt% composites. This research lays the groundwork for environmentally friendly fabrication and consumption in the industrial sector.

Role of silica-based porous cellulose nanocrystals in improving water absorption and mechanical properties

Epoxy resins are important thermosetting polymers. They are widely used in many applications i.e., adhesives, plastics, coatings and sealers. Epoxy molding compounds have attained dominance among common materials due to their excellent mechanical properties. The sol-gel simple method was applied to distinguish the impact on the colloidal time. The properties were obtained with silica-based fillers to enable their mechanical and thermal improvement. The work which we have done here on epoxy-based nanocomposites was successfully modified. The purpose of this research was to look into the effects of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) on various properties and applications. CNCs have recently attracted a lot of interest in a variety of industries due to their high aspect ratio, and low density which makes them perfect candidates. Adding different amounts of silica-based nanocomposites to the epoxy system. Analyzed with different techniques such as Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscope (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and scanning electronic microscopic (SEM) to investigate the morphological properties of modified composites. The various %-age of silica composite was prepared in the epoxy system. The 20% of silica was shown greater enhancement and improvement. They show a better result than D-400 epoxy. Increasing the silica, the transparency of the films decreased, because clustering appears. This shows that the broad use of CNCs in environmental engineering applications is possible, particularly for surface modification, which was evaluated for qualities such as absorption and chemical resistant behavior.

A Review on the Modification of Cellulose and Its Applications

The latest advancements in cellulose and its derivatives are the subject of this study. We summarize the characteristics, modifications, applications, and properties of cellulose. Here, we discuss new breakthroughs in modified cellulose that allow for enhanced control. In addition to standard approaches, improvements in different techniques employed for cellulose and its derivatives are the subject of this review. The various strategies for synthetic polymers are also discussed. The recent advancements in polymer production allow for more precise control, and make it possible to make functional celluloses with better physical qualities. For sustainability and environmental preservation, the development of cellulose green processing is the most abundant renewable substance in nature. The discovery of cellulose disintegration opens up new possibilities for sustainable techniques. Based on the review of recent scientific literature, we believe that additional chemical units of cellulose solubility should be used. This evaluation will evaluate the sustainability of biomass and processing the greenness for the long term. It appears not only crucial to dissolution, but also to the greenness of any process.

Effects of Thermochromic Fluorane Microcapsules and Self-Repairing Waterborne Acrylic Microcapsules on the Properties of Water-Based Coatings on Basswood Surface

The effect of the addition of fluorane microcapsules and urea formaldehyde resin (UF) waterborne acrylic resin microcapsules on the comprehensive properties of the water film on the surface of basswood was studied. Three-factor and two-level orthogonal experiments were carried out with "fluorane microcapsule content", "aqueous acrylic resin microcapsule content" and the "fluorane microcapsule addition method" to prepare a self-repairing thermochromic coating. The optical, mechanical, microstructure and self-repairing properties of the film were optimized by independent experiments on the maximum influence factors of the fluorane microcapsule content. It was concluded that the topcoat with 15% fluorane microcapsules and primer added with 15% water acrylic resin microcapsules had better comprehensive properties. The temperature range was 30-32 °C, the color difference at 32 °C was 72.6 ± 2.0, the 60° gloss was 3.3%, the adhesion was 0 grade, the hardness was 4 H, the impact resistance was 15.0 ± 0.8 kg∙cm, the elongation at break was 17.2% and the gap width was reduced by 3.5 ± 0.1 μm after the film was repaired. The repair rate reached 62.5%. By using microcapsule embedding technology, the repair agent and discoloration agent are embedded in the matrix. The waterborne acrylic resin microcapsules can effectively inhibit crack formation in the coating, and the fluorane microcapsules can achieve the thermochromic property of the coating. This study provides a new research idea for the self-repairing thermochromic dual function of a water-based coating.

Adsorption of copper ions in water by adipic dihydrazide-modified kapok fibers

Kapok fibers (Ceiba pentandra) were modified for the removal of copper ions from aqueous solutions through adsorption. In this fast and facile method, the polysaccharide-like groups of kapok were oxidized with potassium periodate. The novel modification is the loading of the fibers with adipic dihydrazide (ADH) which contain nitrogen and oxygen atoms for heavy metal ion binding. Adsorption experiments have been carried out and analyzed via atom absorption spectroscopy and ultraviolet/visible spectroscopy. In preliminary adsorption experiments, different kapok-based materials have been analyzed on their adsorption capacity and removal efficiency via atom absorption spectroscopy. ADH-modified fibers showed the best results and an increase of copper removal efficiency by 30% in comparison to untreated kapok fibers and superior adsorption capacity compared to kapok fibers loaded with oxalic dihydrazide (ODH). Moreover, the impact of initial concentration and contact time on the adsorption capacity and on the removal efficiency values of the ADH-modified kapok fibers has been studied. Another comparison of the ADH-modified fibers with raw kapok which was cleaned with Milli-Q water, dichloromethane and ethylene glycol showed that the new adsorbents are best suited for copper solutions with concentration values of under 10 mg/L. The heavy metal adsorption experiments were analyzed through both isotherm models Langmuir and Freundlich. The Langmuir model is found to be a suitable model for copper ions. The value of the maximum adsorption capacity is 4.120 mg/g. The ADH-modified kapok fibers were characterized with attenuated total reflection infrared (ATR-IR) spectroscopy, magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS-NMR) spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

Fiber-Reinforced Polymer Composites in the Construction of Bridges: Opportunities, Problems and Challenges

In this review, we discuss the basic issues related to the use of FRP (fiber-reinforced polymer) composites in bridge construction. This modern material is presented in detail in terms of the possibility of application in engineering structures. A general historical outline of the use and development of modern structural materials, such as steel and concrete, is included to introduce composites as a novel material in engineering, and the most important features and advantages of polymers as a construction material are characterized. We also compare FRP to basic structural materials, such as steel and concrete, which enables estimation of the effectiveness of using of FRP polymers as structural material in different applications. The first bridges made of FRP composites are presented and analyzed in terms of applied technological solutions. Examples of structural solutions for deck slabs, girders and other deck elements made of FRP composites are discussed. Particular attention is paid to the systems of deck slabs, especially those composed of pultruded profiles, sandwich panels and hybrid decks. The disadvantages of composites, as well as barriers and limitations in their application in engineering practice, are presented. Exemplary analyses of the costs of construction, maintenance and demolition of FRP composite bridges are presented and compared with the corresponding costs of concrete and steel bridges. The directions of development of composite bridge structures and the greatest challenges facing engineers and constructors in the coming years are discussed.

Modification of Cellulose Nanocrystals With 2-Carboxyethyl Acrylate in the Presence of Epoxy Resin for Enhancing its Adhesive Properties

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) have unparalleled advantages in the preparation of nanocomposites for various applications. However, a major challenge associated with CNCs in nanocomposite preparation is the lack of compatibility with hydrophobic polymers. The hydrophobic modification of CNCs has attracted increasing interest in the modern era standing with long challenges and being environmentally friendly. Here, we synthesized CNCs by using cotton as raw material and then modified them with 2-carboxyethyl acrylate to improve their corresponding mechanical, adhesive, contact angle, and thermal properties. Different concentrations (1–5 wt%) of CNCs were used as modifiers to improve the interfacial adhesion between the reinforced CNCs and E-51 (Bisphenol A diglycidyl ether) epoxy resin system. CNCs offered a better modulus of elasticity, a lower coefficient of energy, and thermal expansion. Compared with the standard sample, the modified CNCs (MCNCs) showed high shear stress, high toughness, efficient degradation, thermal stability, and recycling due to the combined effect of the hyperbranched topological structure of epoxy with good compatibility. The native CNCs lost their hydrophilicity after modification with epoxy, and MCNCs showed good hydrophobic behavior (CA = 105 ± 2°). The findings of this study indicate that modification of CNCs with 2-carboxyethyl acrylate in the presence of epoxy resin and the enhancement of the features would further expand their applications to different sectors.

Features of Thermomechanical Stability of Anionic-Cation Exchange Matrix "Polikon AC" on Viscose Non-Woven Materials

The thermomechanical stability of the anion–cation exchange matrix “Polikon AC” on viscose nonwoven materials is investigated. In this work, a molecular model of a solvation environment for experimentally obtained “Polikon AC” mosaic membranes is refined. Mosaic membranes on a viscose fiber base were fabricated by the method of polycondensation filling. The temperature dependence of deformation was investigated for dry and wet anion and cation exchange membrane components at a constant tensile load of 1.5 N and a heating rate of 8 °C/min. The effect of moisture content on the deformation of anionite and cationite fragments under a constant external tensile load of 1.5 and 3 N in a temperature range up to 100 °C was studied.

Adhesive Sulfide Solid Electrolyte Interface for Lithium Metal Batteries

All solid-state Li metal batteries have drawn extensive attention because of the limited side reaction and consequent safety character. The applications of Li metal anodes are indispensable for realizing high energy density but still face many obstacles. One of the critical issues is the contact failure of the solid/solid interface. The rigid interface between a sulfide electrolyte and Li anode cannot afford the volume variation during cycling. Herein, we design an adhesive solid-state electrolyte film, which is supported by hot melt adhesive porous membranes for anode protection. The Li symmetric cells and all solid-state batteries based on adhesive electrolyte layers all exhibit enhanced long cyclic stability and suppressed voltage polarization. The peel strength tests confirm that the electrolyte layers decorated with adhesive components can offer intimate Li metal/electrolyte physical contact and withstand the volume variation of the Li anode. The adhesion force from porous membranes is believed to play a vital role in maintaining solid-solid interfacial contact stability. This work gives a new insight for interface engineering in all solid-state Li metal batteries.
