Abstract
DESIGN A multi-methods, single-centre pilot comprising a quasi-experimental pre-/post-test design and an exploratory qualitative study. SETTING A rural Australian hospital and health service. PARTICIPANTS Men newly diagnosed with localised prostate cancer who were scheduled to undergo, or had undergone, radical or robotic prostatectomy surgery within the previous 3 months. INTERVENTION The intervention comprised a 12-week virtual care program delivered via teleconference by a specialist nurse, using a pre-existing connected care platform. The program was tailored to the post-operative recovery journey targeting post-operative care, psychoeducation, problem-solving and goal setting. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Primary outcome: program acceptability. SECONDARY OUTCOMES quality of life; prostate cancer-related distress; insomnia severity; fatigue severity; measured at baseline (T1); immediately post-intervention (T2); and 12 weeks post-intervention (T3). RESULTS Seventeen participants completed the program. The program intervention showed very high levels (≥4/5) of acceptability, appropriateness and feasibility. At T1, 47% (n = 8) of men reported clinically significant psychological distress, which had significantly decreased by T3 (p = 0.020). There was a significant improvement in urinary irritative/obstructive symptoms (p = 0.030) and a corresponding decrease in urinary function burden (p = 0.005) from T1 to T3. CONCLUSIONS This pilot has shown that a tailored nurse-led virtual care program, incorporating post-surgical follow-up and integrated low-intensity psychosocial care, is both acceptable to rural participants and feasible in terms of implementation and impact on patient outcomes.

Abstract
Despite a growing body of evidence for the effectiveness of prehabilitation, the uptake of prehabilitation in Europe remains low. Contributing factors range from limited awareness and understanding of prehabilitation to a lack of supporting infrastructure and reimbursement challenges. In this position paper, the authors propose a new comprehensive definition of prehabilitation and identify differentiated thyroid cancer as a type of cancer particularly well-suited for prehabilitation. To support clinicians with the implementation of prehabilitation programs in their clinics, the authors discuss the following practical solutions: a) find the most appropriate prehabilitation program for each patient; b) raise awareness among peers; c) develop evidence to demonstrate the effectiveness of prehabilitation; d) expand the interdisciplinary team; e) expand your network and make use of existing assets; f) utilize learnings from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract
PURPOSE This is the second article in this series on the knowledge, attitudes and beliefs of clinical nurse specialists (CNSs) and ANPs (advanced nurse practitioners) regarding prehabilitation advice in oncology patients, exploring the barriers and facilitators to giving prehabilitation advice by CNSs and ANPs in oncology patients. METHODS A Cross-sectional online questionnaire opens for 3 months to establish the knowledge, attitudes and beliefs of ANPs and CNSs to prehabilitation disseminated through professional organisations and social media. RESULTS The questionnaire gained (n = 415) responses. Prehabilitation advice was routinely given by 89% (n = 371) of respondents. Many (60%) identified a lack of guidance and referral processes as a barrier to giving prehabilitation advice; this corresponded between respondents' confidence to give prehabilitation advice and subsequent referrals (< 0.001). Other factors included time (61%), a lack of patient interest (44%) and limited relevance to patients (35%). CONCLUSION The implementation of standardised nurse prehabilitation advice resources would enable CNSs and ANPs to provide personalised prehabilitation advice in their consultations.

Abstract
Nutrition impact symptoms and unintended weight loss are prevalent in patients with gastrointestinal cancers, especially during the perioperative period or while prescribed anticancer treatments. Because patients may experience loss of lean body mass and malnutrition, aggressive nutrition intervention prior to surgery should be considered. Cancer prehabilitation is a process spanning the care continuum from diagnosis to the time of surgery encompassing nutrition support, psychological and physical assessment, and targeted interventions. Thirteen studies published between 2013 and 2023 were included in this review and evaluated prehabilitation programs' impact on postoperative outcomes in patients with gastrointestinal cancers. Literature continues to emerge supporting the integration of nutrition into a prehabilitation program because of its potential to contribute to improved clinical outcomes, quality of life, and cost-effectiveness, but considerable variation exists with respect to the specific recommendations provided by current prehabilitation programs.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Undertaking physical activity, pre- and post-operatively, can benefit recovery time and improve post-surgical outcomes. One cohort of patients that have reported these benefits are those undergoing surgery for breast cancer. Yet, what remains unclear is the level to which physical activity interventions are implemented into standard surgical care for patients with breast cancer. AIMS This systematic review aimed to examine existing qualitative evidence focusing on pre- and post-operative physical activity interventions to better understand the benefits and shortcomings of physical activity within the surgical journey. METHODS A systematic literature search was undertaken in November 2022, across five databases: MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Embase, CINAHL, and Scopus. Qualitative studies involving people with breast cancer who had undertaken a physical activity intervention, either pre- and/or post-operatively, were included for analysis. The review was registered on PROSPERO: CRD42022372466 and performed according to PRISMA guidelines. The Critical Appraisal Skills Programme qualitative study checklist was used to assess study quality. RESULTS Fourteen studies were included, comprising the perspectives of 418 people receiving surgery for breast cancer. One study implemented preoperative physical activity interventions; the remaining studies focused on post-operative interventions. A narrative systematic review was undertaken due to heterogeneity in reported results. Four themes were developed by thematic analysis, centring on: (1) factors promoting engagement with physical activity interventions; (2) factors preventing engagement with physical activity interventions; (3) the impact of pre- and post-operative interventions on physical and psychological health; and (4) participant recommendations for pre- and post-operative interventions. CONCLUSION Pre- and post-operative physical activity interventions were well-accepted. Patients recognised factors which promoted or prevented engagement with interventions, as well as pre- and post-operative physical and psychological benefits that arose as a result. Evidence based co-design studies may further inform successful implementation of prescribed physical activity into standard care for surgical breast cancer patients.

Abstract
Background Visits to an outpatient cancer clinic represent a challenging situation for patients, which can trigger anxiety and helplessness in those affected. It is important to identify patients with high psychological distress as early as possible in order to provide them with supportive psychological interventions. The aim of this study was to validate the Distress Thermometer (DT), a widely used screening for distress, in a cohort of patients with musculoskeletal tumors and to explore associations between distress, treatment satisfaction and health literacy. Methods All patients presenting to a University outpatient clinic for musculoskeletal cancers were asked to complete a set of questionnaires including the DT), the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) as a comparison scale, the Patient Satisfaction with Comprehensive Cancer Care (SCCC) and European Health Literacy Survey Questionnaire (HLS-EU-Q16).To assess the sensitivity and specificity of the DT in a cohort of patients with musculoskeletal tumors, we compare the performance of the DT in relation to an established screener for anxiety and depression using receiver operating characteristics (ROC) analyses. Results A total of 120 patients (age 58 ± 18, 51% female) were analyzed. Patients reported a mean DT of 5.0 (SD 2.3, range, 0 to 10). Eighty-six patients (71.7 %) had a DT score ≥ 5 indicating moderate or severe psychological distress.The mean total HADS score (scale 0 to42 points) was 11.7 (SD 7.6, range, 0 to 32) with a HADS score of ≥ 15 in 29.2% of patients. The DT correlated moderately with anxiety and depression (HADS total r = 0.48, p < 0.001), while the correlation with depression (HADS-D, r = 0.47, p < 0.001) was stronger than with anxiety (HADS-A, r = 0.38, p < 0.001).For a DT score ≥ 5, ROC analysis yielded a sensitivity of 71.4% and a specificity of 75.3% for detecting moderate or severe psychological distress (HADS ≥ 15, AUC 0.782).The REPERES-G, collected from a subgroup (n = 49), showed high treatment satisfaction with a median score of 132 (min 90, max 163). Especially the "satisfaction with medical aspects of treatment" (REPERES-G medical aspects) showed a moderate correlation with the DT (r = 0.51, p < 0.001) a strong correlation with anxiety and depression (HADS total, r = 0.69, p < 0.001). Conclusion About three in four patients with musculoskeletal tumors have relevant psychological distress. A visual analogue scale can only be a rough guide for identifying patients in need of psychological support, with a sensitivity of 71.4 % and a specificity of 75.3 %. A strong relationship between patient and care team was associated with lower patient psychological distress.Consequently, screening tools cannot replace detailed discussion and personal contact, especially in the treatment of malignant diseases.

Abstract
Cancer surgery is an essential treatment strategy but can disrupt patients' physical and psychological health. With worldwide demand for surgery expected to increase, this review aims to raise awareness of this global public health concern, present a stepwise framework for preoperative risk evaluation, and propose the adoption of personalised prehabilitation to mitigate risk. Perioperative medicine is a growing speciality that aims to improve clinical outcome by preparing patients for the stress associated with surgery. Preparation should begin at contemplation of surgery, with universal screening for established risk factors, physical fitness, nutritional status, psychological health, and, where applicable, frailty and cognitive function. Patients at risk should undergo a formal assessment with a qualified healthcare professional which informs meaningful shared decision-making discussion and personalised prehabilitation prescription incorporating, where indicated, exercise, nutrition, psychological support, 'surgery schools', and referral to existing local services. The foundational principles of prehabilitation can be adapted to local context, culture, and population. Clinical services should be co-designed with all stakeholders, including patient representatives, and require careful mapping of patient pathways and use of multi-disciplinary professional input. Future research should optimise prehabilitation interventions, adopting standardised outcome measures and robust health economic evaluation.

Abstract
Surgery is one of the leading treatment methods of patients with primary or recurrent malignant neoplasms in the thoracic or abdominal cavity. Extensive abdominal interventions are accompanied by such adverse outcomes as blood loss, hypoxia, inflammation, blood clotting abnormality, emotional and cognitive disorders, that increases the incidence of serious complications and worsens the treatment outcome and life quality in weakened oncological patients. Multimodal pre-rehabilitation before surgery can significantly decrease the incidence and severity of postoperative complications. The rehabilitation complex includes exercise therapy, nutritional and psychological support, smoking cessation and pharmacotherapy. Currently, there are a number of questions facing rehabilitation specialists and oncologists, that are related to the determination of pre-rehabilitation optimal timing and process duration, the choice of specific physical exercises, determining the load intensity. This review presents a current view on understanding of surgical stress in extensive abdominal interventions, its effect on the oncological process course, summarizes the experience of last years in choosing pre-rehabilitation program taking into account pathogenetic mechanisms of surgical stress and individual patient's characteristics. Special attention is paid to the comparison of physical exercises' various types, their action mechanisms at different stages of pathological process, the issues of load dosing during pre-rehabilitation activities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Prehabilitation and recovery programmes aim to optimise patients' physical fitness and mental well-being before, during and after cancer treatment. This paper aimed to understand the impact of such a programme on emotional well-being in individuals undergoing cancer surgery. The programme was multi-modal, containing physical activity, well-being and nutritional support. METHODS Qualitative interviews were conducted with 16 individuals who participated in a prehabilitation and recovery programme. Twenty-four health care staff involved in referral completed an online survey. An inductive, thematic analysis was conducted, integrating perspectives of patients and staff, structured with the Framework approach. RESULTS Patients seemed to experience emotional benefits from the programme, appearing less anxious and more confident in their ability to cope with treatment. They seemed to value having something positive to focus on and control over an aspect of treatment. Ongoing, implicit psychological support provided by Exercise Specialists, who were perceived as expert, available and caring, seemed valued. Some patients appeared to appreciate opportunities to talk about cancer with peers and professionals. Discomfort with talking about cancer with other people, outside of the programme, was expressed. CONCLUSIONS Participation in a prehabilitation and recovery programme appeared to yield valuable emotional well-being benefits, even without referral to specialist psychological support. Abstract
Background Breast cancer is the most prominent cancer type to affect women. Surgical treatment of invasive breast cancers involves mastectomy. Due to mastectomy, women are subjected to social, emotional, and cultural problems which need to be addressed. Objective The objective of the study is to understand how women cope with body image-related issues, trauma, anxiety, and depression post-mastectomy. Design A systematic literature review was conducted for understanding the coping in post-mastectomy patients. The methods for identifying the studies were based on Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-analysis (PRISMA) guidelines. Databases Medline/PubMed, PsycInfo, and Cochrane databases were used for searching relevant articles. A final of 19 studies were analyzed for the work. Methods Search strings such as "coping strategies and post mastectomy," "body image coping and post mastectomy" and "anxiety coping and post mastectomy" were used for identification of references from databases. Eligibility criteria were used for finalizing the references. Results Analysis of the 19 studies has clearly shown that women who undergo mastectomy suffer from anxiety, stress, and trauma. This study has observed that women have problems with their body image post-mastectomy along with bouts of depression. Self-coping has been observed in relatively few studies. Psychological interventions before surgery have been observed to be a better coping strategy. In most of the studies, women opted for breast reconstruction to overcome the trauma associated with mastectomy. Conclusion Mastectomy has a severe impact on women's appearance and psychology. Breast reconstruction and acceptance have played an important role in coping among these women. However, breast reconstruction is not accepted by many women due to a multitude of factors. Thus, it is essential to have proper intervention programs in place to ensure women can cope with this situation and can lead healthy lives. Abstract
BACKGROUND We investigated the association between preoperative quality of life and long-term survival in patients undergoing surgical resection for non-small cell lung cancer. METHODS Retrospective analysis was conducted on 388 consecutive patients who completed the quality of life assessment through the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire C30 and lung cancer specific module (LC13), before anatomic lung resection for non-small cell lung cancer (2014-2018). Survival distribution was estimated by the Kaplan-Meier method. Cox proportional hazards regression and competing risk regression analyses were used to assess the independent association of preoperative patient-reported outcomes with overall and cancer-specific survival. RESULTS Higher score in patient-reported physical functioning was significantly associated with longer overall survival. Factors significantly associated with poorer overall survival remained older age (P = .005), low body mass index (P = .007), male sex (P < .001), and nodal involvement (P = .007). Competing regression analysis found that worse baseline lung cancer-specific dyspnea (P = .03), low body mass index (P = .01), worse performance status (P = .03), and lymph node involvement (P = .01) were significantly associated with poorer cancer-specific survival. CONCLUSIONS Higher patient-reported physical function score was associated with longer overall survival after resection. Our study highlights the significance of routinely collecting quality of life data to aid preoperative decision making in non-small cell lung cancer.

Abstract
PURPOSE Haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is an intensive procedure associated with elevated psychological distress, particularly during the initial stages. Based on self-regulatory theory, a prophylactic group intervention was developed to mitigate this distress by targeting perceptions of HSCT and coping. This study evaluated the feasibility of delivering the intervention and of conducting a randomised clinical trial to assess efficacy. METHODS Adults from consecutive referrals at two transplant centres were randomised to the intervention or to treatment as usual at each site. Psychological distress (primary outcome), HSCT perceptions, and coping were assessed at baseline, on transplant day, and two and four weeks after transplantation. RESULTS Of 99 eligible patients, 45 consented. Main barriers to consent were insufficient time prior to transplantation, competing priorities, being unwell, and travel distance. Of 21 participants randomised to the intervention, five attended. Main barriers to attendance included insufficient time prior to transplantation and having competing priorities. Groups could not be held sufficiently frequently to enable attendance prior to transplantation, as randomising participants to the control group limited accrual. Anxiety peaked two weeks following transplantation. Depression increased throughout the acute phase. Clinical levels of distress were observed in 42% of patients during HSCT. Intervention effects were small but sample sizes for a full trial appeared feasible. CONCLUSIONS Multimodal prehabilitation is required but there are specific barriers to delivering a group-based intervention and conducting a trial. Group prehabilitation requires customisation and better integration with routine care, such as patient screening, personalisation, and options for remote delivery.

Abstract
Rotationplasty (RP) is a special surgical technique for bone tumors of the lower limb and is the chosen procedure for children under 6 with bone sarcoma in the distal femur. Leg reconstruction results in an unusual aspect of the limb potentially giving life-long emotional outcomes, especially considering the young age of most RP patients. Although the high level of the quality of life of these patients has been previously reported, aspects related to long-term psychological well-being, self-esteem and life satisfaction, particularly regarding the gender, procreation and parenting, have never been explored. The aim of this study was to assess the general degree of psychological well-being of RP patients, with specific reference to gender, procreation and parenting. Twenty long-term RP survivors of high-grade bone sarcoma participated in the study. They were administered the following validated questionnaires: HADS for psychological well-being (degree of anxiety and depression), Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI), RSES for self-esteem, SF-36 for quality of life, SWLS extended to life satisfaction, and ABIS for body image integration. Data on education, marriage, employment and parenthood were gathered. All the scores obtained were very close to normal references. The only gender difference was found for the TCI Cooperativeness scale, which was higher in women than in men. A satisfactory psychological well-being in terms of both self-esteem and integration of the prosthetic joint limb into one's body image, with relatively limited amount of anxiety/depression, good quality of life, and good temperament and character traits, was found. No major gender differences were reported.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study examined the effects of Fil-Rouge Integrated Psycho-Oncological Support (FRIPOS) in a group of women with breast cancer compared with a group receiving treatment as usual (TAU). METHODS The research design was a randomized, monocentric, prospective study with three time points of data collection: after the preoperative phase (T0), in the initial phase of treatments (T1), and 3 months after the start of treatments (T2). The FRIPOS group (N = 103) and the TAU group (N = 79) completed a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Symptom Checklist-90-R (SCL-90-R) at T0; the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Quality of Life Questionnaire (QLQ) C30 and EORTC QLQ-BR23 at T1; and SCL-90-R, EORTC QLQ-C30, and EORTC QLQ-BR23 at T2. RESULTS A series of independent and paired t tests showed that patients in the FRIPOS group performed better on all scales related to symptomatic manifestations and on some quality of life scales (fatigue, dyspnea, and sleep disturbances) at T2. In addition, a series of ten multiple regressions were performed to predict each SCL subscale at T2 from the SCL score at T0 and the EORTC QLQ-C30 scores at T2. In nine of ten regression models (all except somatization), both FRIPOS group membership and QoL subscale contributed significantly to prediction. CONCLUSIONS This study suggests that patients in the FRIPOS group have more benefits in emotional, psychological, and collateral symptoms than patients in the TAU group and that these improvements are due to integrated psycho-oncology care.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Cancer is one of the leading causes of mortality in the world and also causes morbidity and deterioration in the mental health of patients and their caregivers. The most commonly reported psychological symptoms include anxiety, depression, and the fear of recurrence. The purpose of this narrative review is to elaborate and discuss the effectiveness of the different interventions employed and their utilities in clinical practice. METHODS Scopus and PubMed databases were searched, with a timeframe from 2020 to 2022, to identify randomised controlled trials, meta-analyses, and reviews and reported using PRISMA guidelines. Articles were searched by the following keywords: "cancer, psychology, anxiety, and depression". An additional search was performed with the keywords "cancer, psychology, anxiety, depression, and [intervention name]". The most popular psychological interventions were included in these search criteria. RESULTS A total of 4829 articles were retrieved by the first preliminary search. After reducing duplicates, 2964 articles were assessed for inclusion according to eligibility criteria. After the full-text screening, 25 final articles were chosen. To systematise psychological interventions as described in the literature, the authors have divided them into 3 broad categories, each type targeting a specific domain of mental health: cognitive-behavioural, mindfulness, and relaxation. CONCLUSION The most efficient psychological therapies, as well as therapies which require more extensive research, were outlined in this review. The authors discuss the necessity of primary assessment of patients and whether they require the help of a specialist. With the limitations of the potential risk of bias, an overview of different therapies and interventions targeting various psychological symptoms is outlined.

Abstract
PURPOSE Research investigating depressive symptoms among cancer patients rarely distinguish between core symptoms of depression (motivational and consummatory anhedonia, and negative affect). This distinction is important as these symptoms may show different trajectories during the course of the illness and require different treatment approaches. The aim of the present study is to investigate fluctuations in core depressive symptoms in patients with colorectal cancer (CRC). It is hypothesized that these core depressive symptoms fluctuate differently during the course of the illness and depend on the phase of the illness (diagnostic, treatment, recovery and palliative phase). METHOD This study is based on data from the PROCORE study. PROCORE is a prospective, population-based study aimed to examine the longitudinal impact of CRC and its treatment on patient-reported outcomes. Eligible patients completed self-report questionnaires (i.e. Multifactorial Fatigue Index, Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale, EORTC-C30) after diagnosis, after surgery and at one and two years after diagnosis. RESULTS In total, 539 patients participated of whom 68 have died until March 1ste 2021. Core depressive symptoms fluctuated differently during the course of the illness with higher levels of motivational anhedonia during treatment and palliative phase (P<.001), consummatory anhedonia at the palliative phase (p < .001) and negative affect at the diagnostic and palliative phase (P<.001). CONCLUSION It is important to distinguish between different core depressive symptoms as they fluctuate differently during the course of an illness like CRC. The various depressive symptoms may require a different treatment approach at specific moments during the illness process.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to compare the effect of emotional freedom technique (EFT) on sleep quality and happiness of women who underwent breast cancer surgery and lived in military and nonmilitary families. DESIGN AND METHODS The patients were randomly divided into four groups of military intervention (n = 34), nonmilitary intervention (n = 33), military control (n = 31), and nonmilitary control (n = 35). Data were collected using demographic information form, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and Oxford Happiness Questionnaire. FINDINGS The mean scores of sleep quality and happiness in military and nonmilitary intervention groups improved significantly immediately and 1 month after the intervention compared to control groups (p < 0.001). However, there was no statistically significant difference between the military and nonmilitary intervention groups regarding the mean scores of sleep quality and happiness before, immediately, and 1 month after the intervention (p > 0.05). PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS Given the efficacy of EFT in improving sleep quality and happiness, it is recommended that this technique be taught to nurses to implement in the entire process of providing nursing care to cancer patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To review the recent literature around patient-centric prehabilitation in oncology patients and propose a conceptual framework to inform development of interdisciplinary prehabilitation services leading to focused, individualized prehabilitation interventions. DATA SOURCES A review of recent peer-reviewed literature, national guidance, and government strategy on prehabilitation in oncology patients. CONCLUSION Patient- centric prehabilitation is key to improving patient's experiences of cancer throughout the cancer journey while improving population health and reducing financial costs. Successful personalized prehabilitation interventions are comprised of an interplay between individual interdisciplinary roles, as illustrated in the conceptual framework. The role of the nurse underpins this whole process in patient screening, assessment, implementation of the intervention, and patient reassessment, ensuring care is dynamic and tailored to patient need. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE The review has discussed the key role that nurses play in the process but warrants more research in the area. The conceptual framework provides a basis to develop interdisciplinary prehabilitation services underpinned by the nurse's role. The review advocates the use of educational interventions to equip all health professionals with prehabilitation knowledge to enable interdisciplinary prehabilitation services to be developed.
