Design of L-cysteine functionalized Au@SiO2@Fe3O4/nitrogen-doped graphene nanocomposite and its application in electrochemical detection of Pb2+

Electrochemical sensors modified with iron oxide nanoparticles/nanocomposites for voltammetric detection of Pb (II) in water: A review

Permissible limits of Pb2+ in drinking water are being reduced from 10 μgL-1 to 5 μgL-1, which calls for rapid, and highly reliable detection techniques. Electrochemical sensors have garnered attention in detection of heavy metal ions in environmental samples due to their ease of operation, low cost, and rapid detection responses. Selectivity, sensitivity and detection capabilities of these sensors, can be enhanced by modifying their working electrodes (WEs) with iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) and/or their composites. Therefore, this review is an in-depth analysis of the deployment of IONPs/nanocomposites in modification of electrochemical sensors for detection of Pb2+ in drinking water over the past decade. From the analyzed studies (n = 23), the optimal solution pH, deposition potential, and deposition time ranged between 3 and 5.6, -0.7 to -1.4 V vs Ag/AgCl, and 100-400 s, respectively. Majority of the studies employed square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (n = 16), in 0.1 M acetate buffer solution (n = 19) for detection of Pb2+. Limits of detection obtained (2.5 x 10-9 - 4.5 μg/L) were below the permissible levels which indicated good sensitivities of the modified electrodes. Despite the great performance of these modified electrodes, the primary source of IONPs has always been commercial iron-based salts in addition to the use of so many materials as modifying agents of these IONPs. This may limit reproducibility and sustainability of the WEs due to lengthy and costly preparation protocols. Steel and/or iron industrial wastes can be alternatively employed in generation of IONPs for modification of electrochemical sensors. Additionally, biomass-based activated carbons enriched with surface functional groups are also used in modification of bare IONPs, and subsequently bare electrodes. However, these two areas still need to be fully explored.

Film-forming, stable, conductive composites of polyhistidine/graphene oxide for electrochemical quantification of trace Pb2

Nanomaterials with unique properties, such as good film-formation and plentiful active atoms, play a vital role in the construction of electrochemical sensors. In this work, an in situ electrochemical synthesis of conductive polyhistidine (PHIS)/graphene oxide (GO) composite film (PHIS/GO) was designed to construct an electrochemical sensor for the sensitive detection of Pb²⁺. Herein, GO as an active material can directly form homogeneous and stable thin films on the electrode surface because of its excellent film-forming property. Then GO film was further functionalized by in situ electrochemical polymerization of histidine to obtain plentiful active atoms (N). Due to strong van der Waals forces between GO and PHIS, PHIS/GO film exhibited high stability. Furthermore, the electrical conductivity of PHIS/GO films was greatly improved by in situ electrochemical reduction technology and the plentiful active atoms (N) in PHIS are profitable for adsorbing Pb²⁺ from solution, tremendously enhancing the assay sensitivity. With the above unique property, the proposed electrochemical sensor showed high stability, a low detection limit (0.045 μg L^-1) and a wide linear range (0.1-300 μg L^-1) for the quantification of Pb²⁺. The method can also be extended to the synthesis of other film-forming nanomaterials to functionalize themselves and widen their potential applications, avoiding the addition of non-conductive film-forming substances.

An Efficient Voltammetric Sensor Based on Graphene Oxide-Decorated Binary Transition Metal Oxides Bi2O3/MnO2 for Trace Determination of Lead Ions

Herein we present a facile synthesis of the graphene oxide-decorated binary transition metal oxides of Bi₂O₃ and MnO₂ nanocomposites (Bi₂O₃/MnO₂/GO) and their applications in the voltammetric detection of lead ions (Pb²⁺) in water samples. The surface morphologies, crystal structures, electroactive surface area, and charge transferred resistance of the Bi₂O₃/MnO₂/GO nanocomposites were investigated through the scanning electron microscopy (SEM), power X-ray diffraction (XRD), cyclic voltammetry (CV), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques, respectively. The Bi₂O₃/MnO₂/GO nanocomposites were further decorated onto the surface of a glassy carbon electrode (GCE), and Pb²⁺ was quantitatively analyzed by using square-wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV). We explored the effect of the analytical parameters, including deposition potential, deposition time, and solution pH, on the stripping peak current of Pb²⁺. The Bi₂O₃/MnO₂/GO nanocomposites enlarged the electroactive surface area and reduced the charge transferred resistance by significant amounts. Moreover, the synergistic enhancement effect of MnO₂, Bi₂O₃ and GO endowed Bi₂O₃/MnO₂/GO/GCE with extraordinary electrocatalytic activity toward Pb²⁺ stripping. Under optimal conditions, the Bi₂O₃/MnO₂/GO/GCE showed a broad linear detection range (0.01-10 μM) toward Pb²⁺ detection, with a low limit of detection (LOD, 2.0 nM). The proposed Bi₂O₃/MnO₂/GO/GCE electrode achieved an accurate detection of Pb²⁺ in water with good recoveries (95.5-105%).

Application of magnetic nanomaterials in electroanalytical methods: A review

Magnetic nanomaterials (MNMs) have gained high attention in different fields of studies due to their ferromagnetic/superparamagnetic properties and their low toxicity and high biocompatibility. MNMs contain magnetic elements such as iron and nickel in metallic, bimetallic, metal oxide, and mixed metal oxide. In electroanalytical methods, MNMs have been applied as sorbents for sample preparation before the electrochemical detection (sorbent role), as the electrode modifier (catalytic role), and the integration of the above two roles (as both sorbent and catalytic agent). In this paper, the application of MNMs in electroanalytical methods have been classified based on the main role of the nanomaterial and discussed separately. Furthermore, catalytic activities of MNMs in electroanalytical methods such as redox electrocatalytic, nanozymes catalytic (peroxidase, catalase activity, oxidase activity, superoxide dismutase activity), catalyst gate, and nanocontainer have been discussed.

Epitaxial Graphene Sensors Combined with 3D-Printed Microfluidic Chip for Heavy Metals Detection

In this work, we investigated the sensing performance of epitaxial graphene on Si-face 4H-SiC (EG/SiC) for liquid-phase detection of heavy metals (e.g., Pb and Cd), showing fast and stable response and low detection limit. The sensing platform proposed includes 3D-printed microfluidic devices, which incorporate all features required to connect and execute lab-on-chip (LOC) functions. The obtained results indicate that EG exhibits excellent sensing activity towards Pb and Cd ions. Several concentrations of Pb²⁺ solutions, ranging from 125 nM to 500 µM, were analyzed showing Langmuir correlation between signal and Pb²⁺ concentrations, good stability, and reproducibility over time. Upon the simultaneous presence of both metals, sensor response is dominated by Pb²⁺ rather than Cd²⁺ ions. To explain the sensing mechanisms and difference in adsorption behavior of Pb²⁺ and Cd²⁺ ions on EG in water-based solutions, we performed van-der-Waals (vdW)-corrected density functional theory (DFT) calculations and non-covalent interaction (NCI) analysis, extended charge decomposition analysis (ECDA), and topological analysis. We demonstrated that Pb²⁺ and Cd²⁺ ions act as electron-acceptors, enhancing hole conductivity of EG, due to charge transfer from graphene to metal ions, and Pb²⁺ ions have preferential ability to binding with graphene over cadmium. Electrochemical measurements confirmed the conductometric results, which additionally indicate that EG is more sensitive to lead than to cadmium.

Understanding Graphene Response to Neutral and Charged Lead Species: Theory and Experiment

Deep understanding of binding of toxic Lead (Pb) species on the surface of two-dimensional materials is a required prerequisite for the development of next-generation sensors that can provide fast and real-time detection of critically low concentrations. Here we report atomistic insights into the Lead behavior on epitaxial graphene (Gr) on silicon carbide substrates by thorough complementary study of voltammetry, electrical characterization, Raman spectroscopy, and Density Functional Theory (DFT). It is verified that the epitaxial graphene exhibits quasi-reversible anode reactions in aqueous solutions, providing a well-defined redox peak for Pb species and good linearity over a concentration range from 1 nM to 1 µM. The conductometric approach offers another way to investigate Lead adsorption, which is based on the formations of stable charge-transfer complexes affecting the p-type conductivity of epitaxial graphene. Our results suggest the adsorption ability of the epitaxial graphene towards divalent Lead ions is concentration-dependent and tends to saturate at higher concentrations. To elucidate the mechanisms responsible for Pb adsorption, we performed DFT calculations and estimated the solvent-mediated interaction between Lead species in different oxidative forms and graphene. Our results provide central information regarding the energetics and structure of Pb-graphene interacting complexes that underlay the adsorption mechanisms of neutral and divalent Lead species. Such a holistic understanding favors design and synthesis of new sensitive materials for water quality monitoring.
