Abstract
Adsorption is a promising technology for removing several contaminants from aqueous matrices. In the last years, researchers worldwide have been working on developing composite adsorbents to overcome some limitations and drawbacks of conventional adsorbent materials, which depend on various factors, including the characteristics of the adsorbents. Therefore, it is essential to characterize the composite adsorbents to describe their properties and structure and elucidate the mechanisms, behavior, and phenomenons during the adsorption process. In this sense, this work aimed to review the main methods used for composite adsorbent characterization, providing valuable information on the importance of these techniques in developing new adsorbents. In this paper, we reviewed the following methods: X-Ray diffraction (XRD); spectroscopy; scanning electron microscopy (SEM); N2 adsorption/desorption isotherms (BET and BJH methods); thermogravimetry (TGA); point of zero charge (pHPZC); elemental analysis; proximate analysis; swelling and water retention capacities; desorption and reuse.

Abstract
Abstract
Chitosan and its modifiers have been widely studied for their good biocompatibility and excellent adsorption properties for heavy metal ions. The synthesis and application of modified chitosan, the effects of process variables (such as pH, amount of adsorbent, temperature, contact time, etc.), adsorption kinetics, thermodynamics and the adsorption mechanism on the removal of heavy metal ions are reviewed. The purpose is to provide the latest information about chitosan as adsorbent and to promote the synthesis of modified chitosan and its application in the removal of heavy metals.

Abstract
Graphene and its derivatives, especially graphene oxide (GO), are attracting considerable interest in the fabrication of new adsorbents that have the potential to remove various pollutants that have escaped into the aquatic environment. Herein, the development of GO/chitosan (GO/CS) composites as adsorbent materials is described and reviewed. This combination is interesting as the addition of graphene to chitosan enhances its mechanical properties, while the chitosan hydrogel serves as an immobilization matrix for graphene. Following a brief description of both graphene and chitosan as independent adsorbent materials, the emerging GO/CS composites are introduced. The additional materials that have been added to the GO/CS composites, including magnetic iron oxides, chelating agents, cyclodextrins, additional adsorbents and polymeric blends, are then described and discussed. The performance of these materials in the removal of heavy metal ions, dyes and other organic molecules are discussed followed by the introduction of strategies employed in the regeneration of the GO/CS adsorbents. It is clear that, while some challenges exist, including cost, regeneration and selectivity in the adsorption process, the GO/CS composites are emerging as promising adsorbent materials.

Abstract
Chitosan is a promising substitute for heavy metal ion adsorbents. However, traditional pure chitosan adsorbents have certain disadvantages that limit their application. In this paper, a 'top modification' strategy was used to enhance the capturing ability of chitosan adsorbents. A chitosan aerogel was prepared via physical crosslinking and then enhanced by immersion in ethylenediamine tetraacetic anhydride solution. Finally, an enhanced chitosan aerogel was obtained, and analyses were used to describe its structure, adsorption properties and mechanism. Results showed that both the porous structure and the combined complexations dramatically improved the capturing ability of the chitosan aerogel for heavy metal ions. The theoretical adsorption capacities of the enhanced aerogel for Cu2+, Pb2+ and Cd2+ reached 108.14, 143.73 and 84.62 mg/g, respectively. Due to their environmental friendliness, good adsorption performance, easy separation and reusability, enhanced aerogels have become viable solutions to removing heavy metal pollutants from aquatic systems.

Abstract
The quality of water is continuously under threat as increasing concentrations of pollutants escape into the aquatic environment. However, these issues can be alleviated by adsorbing pollutants onto adsorbents. Chitosan and its composites are attracting considerable interest as environmentally acceptable adsorbents and have the potential to remove many of these contaminants. In this review the development of chitosan-based adsorbents is described and discussed. Following a short introduction to the extraction of chitin from seafood wastes, followed by its conversion to chitosan, the properties of chitosan are described. Then, the emerging chitosan/carbon-based materials, including magnetic chitosan and chitosan combined with graphene oxide, carbon nanotubes, biochar, and activated carbon and also chitosan-silica composites are introduced. The applications of these materials in the removal of various heavy metal ions, including Cr(VI), Pb(II), Cd(II), Cu(II), and different cationic and anionic dyes, phenol and other organic molecules, such as antibiotics, are reviewed, compared and discussed. Adsorption isotherms and adsorption kinetics are then highlighted and followed by details on the mechanisms of adsorption and the role of the chitosan and the carbon or silica supports. Based on the reviewed papers, it is clear, that while some challenges remain, chitosan-based materials are emerging as promising adsorbents.

Abstract
The worm-like nitrogen-doped-carbon framework (WNCF) with abundant edge-plane-like defective sites (EDSs) was synthesized by using natural wax gourd (Benincasa hispida) as the main carbon precursor and milk yielded by Chinese Holstein cattle (Holstein Friesian) as the nitrogen precursor for the first time. The Nafion-dispersed WNCF (Nafion-WNCF) was employed to design a highly sensitive electrochemical sensor for the trace determination of toxic heavy metal lead (II) (Pb2+) by the differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV). Some key experimental factors including calcination temperature of WNCF, pH value of the buffer solution, deposition potential, deposition time and the concentration of bismuth (Bi3+) were optimized for the stripping analysis of Pb2+. Under the optimum experimental condition, Nafion-WNCF modified bismuth film glassy carbon electrode (Nafion-WNCF/BFGCE) exhibits a wide linear range from 0.5 μg L-1 to 100 μg L-1 and a low detection limit of 0.2 μg L-1 (S/N = 3) for detecting Pb2+. Especially, Nafion-WNCF/BFGCE was successfully applied to determine Pb2+ in tap water and lake water samples. All the results suggest that the WNCF can be considered as a green and low-cost nanomaterial for the precision detection of Pb2+ in real samples.
