Adsorption and Visible Light Photocatalytic Degradation of Electrospun PAN@W18O49 Nanofibers

W18O49 Nanowhiskers Decorating SiO2 Nanofibers: Lessons from In Situ SEM/TEM Growth to Large Scale Synthesis and Fundamental Structural Understanding

Tungsten suboxide W18O49 nanowhiskers are a material of great interest due to their potential high-end applications in electronics, near-infrared light shielding, catalysis, and gas sensing. The present study introduces three main approaches for the fundamental understanding of W18O49 nanowhisker growth and structure. First, W18O49 nanowhiskers were grown from γ-WO3/a-SiO2 nanofibers in situ in a scanning electron microscope (SEM) utilizing a specially designed microreactor (μReactor). It was found that irradiation by the electron beam slows the growth kinetics of the W18O49 nanowhisker, markedly. Following this, an in situ TEM study led to some new fundamental understanding of the growth mode of the crystal shear planes in the W18O49 nanowhisker and the formation of a domain (bundle) structure. High-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy analysis of a cross-sectioned W18O49 nanowhisker revealed the well-documented pentagonal Magnéli columns and hexagonal channel characteristics for this phase. Furthermore, a highly crystalline and oriented domain structure and previously unreported mixed structural arrangement of tungsten oxide polyhedrons were analyzed. The tungsten oxide phases found in the cross section of the W18O49 nanowhisker were analyzed by nanodiffraction and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), which were discussed and compared in light of theoretical calculations based on the density functional theory method. Finally, the knowledge gained from the in situ SEM and TEM experiments was valorized in developing a multigram synthesis of W18O49/a-SiO2 urchin-like nanofibers in a flow reactor.

Nanofibers of chitosan-polycaprolactone blends as active support for photocatalytic nanoparticles: Outstanding role of chitosan in the degradation of an organic dye in water

Hybrid nanofibers of a chitosan-polycaprolactone blend containing titanium dioxide nanoparticles TiO2NPs, were prepared through electrospinning to study their adsorption and photocatalytic degradation capabilities of the model organic water pollutants, rhodamine B, RhB. To obtain uniform and bead-free nanofibers, an optimization of the electrospinning parameters was performed. The optimization was carried out by systematically adjusting the solution conditions (solvent, concentration, and polymer ratio) and instrumental parameters (voltage, needle tip-collector distance, and flow). The obtained materials were characterized by FT-IR, TGA, DSC, SEM, TEM, mechanical tensile test, and water contact angle. The photoactivity was investigated using a batch-type system by following UV-Vis absorbance and fluorescence of RhB. TiO2NPs were incorporated ex-situ into the polymer matrix, contributing to good mechanical properties and higher hydrophilicity of the material. The results showed that the presence of chitosan in the nanofibers significantly increased the adsorption of RhB and its photocatalytic degradation by TiO2NPs (5, 55 and 80 % of RhB degradation with NFs of PCL, TiO2/PCL and TiO2/CS-PCL, after 30 h of light irradiation, respectively), evidencing a synergistic effect between them. The results are attributed to an attraction of RhB by chitosan to the vicinity of TiO2NPs, favouring initial adsorption and degradation, phenomenon known as "bait-and-hook-and-destruct" effect.

Fabrication of EVOH/PANI Composite Nanofibrous Aerogels for the Removal of Dyes and Heavy Metal Ions

Water pollution caused by the leakage and discharge of pollutants, such as dyes and heavy metal ions, can cause serious damage to the environment and human health. Therefore, it is important to design and develop adsorbent materials that are efficient and multifunctional for the removal of these pollutants. In this work, poly(vinyl alcohol-co-ethylene) (EVOH)/polyaniline (PANI) composite nanofibrous aerogels (NFAs) were fabricated via solution oxidation and blending. The aerogels were characterized by a scanning electron microscope, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, a contact angle measuring instrument and a universal testing machine. The influences of the introduction of PANI nanorods on the structural properties of aerogels were investigated, and the adsorption performance of aerogels was also studied. The results showed that the introduction of PANI nanorods filled the fibrous network structure, reduced porosity, increased surface hydrophilicity and improved compressive strength. Furthermore, EVOH/PANI composite NFAs possess good adsorption performances for dyes and heavy metal ions: The adsorption capacities of methyl orange and chromium ions (VI) are 73.22 mg/g and 115.54 mg/g, respectively. Overall, the research suggests that EVOH/PANI NFAs have great potential as efficient and multifunctional adsorbent materials for the removal of pollutants from water.
