Long-term proton pump inhibitor use is associated with vascular calcification in chronic kidney disease: a cross-sectional study using propensity score analysis

Use of Proton Pump Inhibitors Is Not Associated with Post-Dialysis Fatigue and Time of Recovery after Dialysis in Patients on Maintenance Hemodialysis

Objectives: To define if the use of proton pump inhibitors (PPI) is associated with PDF prevalence and characteristics and with time of recovery after dialysis in patients on maintenance hemodialysis. Methods: Patients were defined as experiencing PDF if they spontaneously offered this complaint when asked the open-ended question: "Do you feel fatigued after dialysis?". Time of recovery after dialysis (TIRD) was also assessed for each patient. Each patient was invited to rate the intensity, duration and frequency of PDF from 1 to 5. We defined if patients used PPI (no PPI use or PPI use), the type of used PPI, the dose of used PPI, and the duration of the use of PPI (<1 year or ≥1 year). Results: A total of 346 patients were studied: 259 used PPI (55 used omeprazole, 63 esomeprazole, 54 pantoprazole, 87 lansoprazole, and 7 rabeprazole) and 87 did not. Two hundred and thirty-two patients declared PDF and 114 did not. The median [min-max] TIRD was 210 min [0-1440]. The prevalence of PDF in PPI users and PPI non-users was 67% and 68%, respectively (p = 0.878). The median [min-max] TIRD did not differ significantly between PPI users and PPI non-users (180 [0-1440] and 240 [0-1440], respectively; p = 0.871). Median PDF intensity, duration, frequency, and severity did not differ significantly between PPI use and no use. The prevalence of PDF was similar among the different types of PPI use and did not differ with respect to PPI non-users. Duration of PPI exposure was <1 year in 40 patients and ≥1 year in 219 patients. The prevalence of PDF did not differ between the two exposures. The correlation matrix between PPI equivalent dose, PPI treatment duration and PDF frequency, PDF characteristics, and TIRD showed whether there was statistical significance. Conclusions: The use of PPI is not associated with PDF and time of recovery after dialysis in patients on maintenance hemodialysis.

Evolution of proton pump inhibitor prescribing from 2017 to 2021 at 14 secondary and tertiary hospitals in China：a multicentre cross-sectional study

OBJECTIVE

The objective of this study was to describe the trend in prescribing proton pump inhibitor (PPI) use and expenditure in both secondary and tertiary hospitals in China between 2017 and 2021.

DESIGN

Multicentre cross-sectional survey.

SETTING

China, 14 medical centres, January 2017 to December 2021.

PARTICIPANTS

537 284 participants who were treated with PPI in 14 medical centres of China, between January 2017 and December 2021 were included.

MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES

The rate of PPI prescriptions, the defined daily doses (DDDs), DDDs/1000 inhabitants per day (DDDs/TID) and expenditure were analysed and plotted to demonstrate changes in prescription PPI use and expenditure.

RESULTS

For both outpatient and inpatient settings, the rate of PPI prescribing decreased from 2017 to 2021. In outpatient settings, decreased slightly from 3.4% to 2.8%, however, in inpatient settings, showed a progressive decrease from 26.7% to 14.0%. The overall rate of injectable PPI prescriptions for inpatients decreased significantly from 21.2% to 7.3% between 2017 and 2021. Decreased trends in usage of oral PPI were observed (from 280 750 DDDs to 255 121 DDDs) between 2017 and 2021. However, usage of injectable PPI showed a significantly decrease from 191 451 DDDs to 68 806 DDDs from 2017 to 2021. In terms of DDDs/TID of PPI for inpatients decreased dramatically from 52.3 to 30.2 for the past 5 years. Expenditure on oral PPI decreased slightly from ¥1.98 million (Chinese currency Renminbi 'yuan') to ¥1.23 million for the past 5 years, whereas expenditure on injectable PPI showed a marked decrease from ¥2.61 million to ¥0.94 million. There was no statistical difference in both PPI use and expenditure between secondary and tertiary hospitals during the study period.

CONCLUSIONS

Decreased PPI use and expenditure were observed among secondary and tertiary hospitals over the past 5 years (2017-2021).

The Bartter-Gitelman Spectrum: Fifty Year Follow-up with Revision of Diagnosis after Whole Genome Sequencing

Bartter syndrome (BS) and Gitelman syndrome (GS) are renal tubular disorders affecting sodium, potassium, and chloride reabsorption. Clinical features include muscle cramps and weakness, in association with hypokalemia, hypochloremic metabolic alkalosis, and hyperreninemic hyperaldosteronism. Hypomagnesemia and hypocalciuria are typical of GS, while juxtaglomerular hyperplasia is characteristic of BS. GS is due to SLC12A3 variants, whereas BS is due to variants in SLC12A1, KCNJ1, CLCNKA, CLCNKB, BSND, MAGED2, or CASR. We had the opportunity to follow up one of the first reported cases of a salt-wasting tubulopathy, who based on clinical features was diagnosed with GS. The patient had presented at age 10 years with tetany precipitated by vomiting or diarrhea. She had hypokalemia, a hypochloremic metabolic alkalosis, hyponatremia, mild hypercalcemia, and normomagnesemia, and subsequently developed hypocalciuria and hypomagnesemia. A renal biopsy showed no evidence for juxtaglomerular hyperplasia. She developed chronic kidney failure at age 55 years, and ocular sclerochoroidal calcification, associated with BS and GS, at older than 65 years. Our aim was therefore to establish the genetic diagnosis in this patient using whole-genome sequencing (WGS). Leukocyte DNA was used for WGS analysis, and this revealed a homozygous c.226C > T (p.Arg76Ter) nonsense CLCNKB mutation, thereby establishing a diagnosis of BS type-3. WGS also identified 2 greater than 5-Mb regions of homozygosity that suggested likely mutational heterozygosity in her parents, who originated from a Greek island with fewer than 1500 inhabitants and may therefore have shared a common ancestor. Our results demonstrate the utility of WGS in establishing the correct diagnosis in renal tubular disorders with overlapping phenotypes.

High proton pump inhibitor exposure increases risk of calcinosis in systemic sclerosis

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the association between proton pump inhibitor (PPI) use and the presence and severity of calcinosis in SSc.

METHODS

We analysed data from two SSc cohorts from a single centre. Cohort 1 included 199 patients reviewed over 10 years, for whom retrospective data on PPI use and calcinosis were available. Cohort 2 was recruited prospectively and included 215 consecutive patients, who underwent clinical assessment. Outcomes of interest were presence of current calcinosis (CC) or calcinosis at any time (CAT).

RESULTS

The cohort 1 data analysis showed that among patients on standard dose PPI 20% had calcinosis, while in those on high doses of PPI calcinosis was present in 39% (P = 0.003). Analysis of the data from cohort 2 confirmed these findings, demonstrating that the odds of CAT increased significantly with longer PPI exposure [odds ratio (OR) 1.04, 95% CI: 1.02, 1.06; P < 0.001], longer disease duration (OR 1.08, 95% CI: 1.05, 1.12; P < 0.001) and greater age (OR 1.03, CI: 1.01, 1.05; P = 0.010). Multivariable logistic regression showed that higher exposure to PPI remained a significant predictor of calcinosis, with PPI exposure >10 years increasing the risk of CAT >6-fold, compared with no PPI (OR 6.37, 95% CI: 1.92, 21.17; P = 0.003) after adjusting for disease duration and antibodies.

CONCLUSION

We confirm a significant association between high PPI exposure with severity of calcinosis in SSc. Given the clinical impact of calcinosis and reflux in SSc, PPI exposure as a potentially modifiable risk factor for calcinosis requires further evaluation.

National trends in prescription proton pump inhibitor use and expenditure in the United States in 2002-2017

OBJECTIVES

In the United States, proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are one of the most commonly prescribed classes of drugs, but contemporary data on national-level utilization patterns for PPI use are limited. This study examined the trends in prescription PPI use and expenditures, overall and by patient subgroups, and identified predictors of PPI use.

METHODS

Prescription PPI use was identified from the 2002-2017 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey data using the brand and generic names. Trends in PPI use were examined overall and by patients' sociodemographic characteristics and disease status. Trends in brand and generic PPI users and total and average PPI expenditures were also examined. A multivariable model was used to identify patient factors associated with PPI use.

RESULTS

The overall proportion of PPI users increased from 5.70% in 2002-2003 to 6.73% in 2016-2017 (P value = 0.011). Increased trends in PPI use were observed among U.S. adults aged 65 years and older, both males and females, non-Hispanic whites, non-Hispanic blacks, Hispanics, Asians, in all 4 geographic regions, with public health insurance, and those who were obese (all P value < 0.05). Whereas PPI use increased significantly, the average PPI expenditure per patient decreased significantly. Multivariable results found that participants who were aged 25 years or older, were female, were non-Hispanic whites, resided in the Northeast, had higher incomes, had public or private health insurance, were obese, were married had a higher likelihood of using PPIs.

CONCLUSION

Increased PPI use was observed among most of the patient subgroups. Understanding the utilization patterns of PPIs could help practitioners identify potential treatment disparities and monitor the safety of PPI use.

Use of proton pump inhibitors in dialysis patients: a double-edged sword?

Large cohort-based studies have shown that proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are linked to rare but multiple and varied secondary events when used in the general population. Although clinicians accept the negative effects of PPIs on renal function, there is a lack of available data regarding the potential consequences of their use by dialysis patients in whom the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding is quite high. This review aims to highlight the risks and benefits of PPIs use in dialysis patients. To summarize, the benefit on the reduction of high digestive bleeding seems certain, but without any beneficial impact on overall survival. The impact on quality of life seems to be significant. The data on the occurrence of peritonitis during PPIs treatment are very contradictory. There is evidence regarding the occurrence of hypomagnesaemia in haemodialysis patients with PPIs; which may lead to increase bone fragility. New data show an increased cardiovascular risk and even a risk of death linked to the use of PPIs on dialysis. Several mechanisms of IPP toxicity are advanced to explain these findings.

Use of proton pump inhibitors is associated with an increase in adverse cardiovascular events in patients with hemodialysis: Insight from the kids registry

BACKGROUND

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are known to increase the risk of mortality and cardiovascular events in the general population. However, in patients with maintenance hemodialysis, PPI effects are under investigated.

METHODS

We analyzed the risk of PPIs for cardiovascular events using the Kagoshima Dialysis (KIDS) registry, a prospective, multicenter, observational study in patients with maintenance hemodialysis in Japan.

RESULTS

In all, 531 patients were enrolled from June 2015 to December 2018. One-year follow-up data were available for 376 patients (Use of PPIs at baseline (PPI group): 217 patients and without PPIs (No PPI group): 159 patients). The incidence of a composite outcome (all-cause mortality, non-fatal myocardial infarction, or non-fatal stroke) was higher in patients in the PPI group than the No PPI group (15.2% vs. 4.4%; hazard ratio (HR): 3.65, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.61-8.23, P = 0.002). In the multivariate analysis, even after adjustment for covariates, the use of PPIs was an independent risk factor for a composite outcome (HR: 2.38, 95% CI: 1.02-5.54, P = 0.045). We performed propensity score matching analysis as a sensitivity analysis, showing a consistent result. The incidence of bleeding showed no difference between the two groups (15.7% vs. 11.3%; HR: 1.46, 95% CI: 0.83-2.59, P = 0.19).

CONCLUSIONS

These results indicate that the use of PPIs in patients with maintenance hemodialysis might increase mortality and cardiovascular events without decreasing the risk of bleeding. Therefore, it should always be analyzed if a patient truly needs PPIs.

Increased Risk of Bone Fractures in Hemodialysis Patients Treated with Proton Pump Inhibitors in Real World: Results from the Dialysis Outcomes and Practice Patterns Study (DOPPS)

Long-term treatment with proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) is associated with an increased risk of fractures in the general population. PPIs are widely prescribed to dialysis patients but to date no study has specifically tested, by state-of-art statistical methods, the relationship between use of PPIs and fractures in this patient population. This study aimed to assess whether use of PPIs is associated with bone fractures (ie, hip fractures and fractures other than hip fractures) in a large international cohort of hemodialysis patients. We considered an observational prospective cohort of 27,097 hemodialysis patients from the Dialysis Outcomes and Practice Patterns Study (DOPPS). Data analysis was performed by the Fine and Gray method, considering the competitive risk of mortality, as well as by a cause-specific hazards Cox model with death as a censoring event and matching patients according to the prescription time. Of 27,097 hemodialysis patients, 13,283 patients (49%) were on PPI treatment. Across the follow-up period (median, 19 months), 3.8 bone fractures × 100 person-years and 1.2 hip fractures × 100 person-years occurred. In multiple Cox models, considering the competitive risk of mortality, the incidence rate of bone (subdistribution hazard ratio [SHR] 1.22; 95% CI, 1.10 to 1.36; p < 0.001) and hip fractures (SHR 1.35; 95% CI, 1.13 to 1.62; p = 0.001) was significantly higher in PPI-treated than in PPI-untreated patients. These findings also held true in multiple, cause-specific, hazards Cox models matching patients according to the prescription time (bone fractures: HR 1.47; 95% CI, 1.23 to 1.76; p < 0.001; hip fractures: HR 1.85; 95% CI, 1.37 to 2.50; p < 0.001). The use of PPIs requires caution and a careful evaluation of risks/benefits ratio in hemodialysis patients. © 2019 American Society for Bone and Mineral Research.

Proton pump inhibitor as an independent factor of progression of abdominal aortic calcification in patients on maintenance hemodialysis

BACKGROUNDS

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) can be associated with vascular calcification in patients undergoing dialysis through hypomagnesemia. However, only few studies have demonstrated the influence of PPIs on vascular calcification in patients on maintenance hemodialysis (HD). This study aimed to investigate whether the use of PPIs accelerates vascular calcification in patients on HD.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

We retrospectively evaluated 200 HD patients who underwent regular blood tests and computed tomography (CT) between 2016 and 2017. The abdominal aortic calcification index (ACI) was measured using abdominal CT. The difference in the ACI values between 2016 and 2017 was evaluated as ΔACI. Patients were divided into PPI and non-PPI groups, and variables, such as patient background, medication, laboratory data, and ΔACI were compared. Factors independently associated with higher ΔACI progression (≥ third tertile value of ΔACI in this study) were determined using multivariate logistic regression analysis.

RESULTS

The PPI and non-PPI groups had 112 (56%) and 88 (44%) patients, respectively. Median and third tertile value of ΔACIs were 4.2% and 5.8%, respectively. Serum magnesium was significantly lower in the PPI (2.1 mg/dL) than in the non-PPI (2.3 mg/dL) group (P <0.001). Median ΔACI was significantly higher in the PPI (5.0%) than in the non-PPI (3.8%) group (P = 0.009). A total of 77 (39%) patients had a higher ΔACI. Multivariate analysis revealed that PPIs (odds ratio = 2.23; 95% confidence interval = 1.11-4.49), annual mean calcium phosphorus product, ACI in 2016, baseline serum magnesium levels, and HD vintage were independent factors associated with higher ΔACI progression after adjusting for confounders.

CONCLUSION

PPI use may accelerate vascular calcification in patients on HD. Further studies are necessary to elucidate their influence on vascular calcification.

Acid-suppressive drugs and risk of kidney disease: A systematic review and meta-analysis

BACKGROUND AND AIM

More concerns had been raised about the risk of kidney disease (KD) associated with acid-suppressive drugs. But whether they could directly increase such risk remained unclear. Meta-analysis was conducted to comprehensively investigate this relationship.

METHODS

PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and three Chinese databases were searched until April 2017 for observational studies investigating the associations between acid-suppressive drugs and KD. Pooled log (odds ratios [ORs]) or log (hazard ratios [HRs]) with standard errors for KD risk were calculated using the generic inverse variance method and random-effect model.

RESULTS

Ten studies involving 128 020 KD patients were included. Proton pump inhibitor (PPI) therapy was associated with higher risks of acute interstitial nephritis (OR, 2.78; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.25-6.17), acute kidney injury (AKI) (HR, 1.85; 95% CI, 1.33-2.59), chronic kidney disease (CKD) (HR, 1.47; 95% CI, 1.03-2.09), and end-stage renal disease (ESRD) (HR, 1.61; 95% CI, 1.26-2.04) than non-PPI therapy. Additionally, PPI significantly increased the risks of AKI (HR, 1.32; 95% CI, 1.16-1.51), CKD (HR, 1.28; 95% CI, 1.24-1.33), and ESRD (HR, 1.96; 95% CI, 1.21-3.17) compared with histamine 2 receptor antagonist (H2 RA). Relationship between H2 RA therapy and AKI (OR, 0.98; 95% CI, 0.90-1.07) or CKD (OR, 1.00; 95% CI, 0.89-1.11) was not found.

CONCLUSIONS

Proton pump inhibitor therapy significantly increased the risks of acute interstitial nephritis, AKI, CKD, and ESRD. Similar risks were not identified for H2 RA therapy. More clinical trials are needed to confirm our findings.

Early arterial calcification does not correlate with bone loss in pseudoxanthoma elasticum

BACKGROUND AND AIMS

Pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE; OMIM 264800, prevalence 1/25,000 to 1/50,000) is an autosomal recessive multisystem disease due to deficiency in ABCC6, an ATP-binding cassette, sub-family C transporter. The PXE phenotype is mainly characterized by progressive ectopic calcification of connective tissues (namely skin, retinal Bruch's membrane and peripheral arteries) but the impact of PXE on bone structure is currently unknown. The present study sought to investigate bone mineralization and its potential link with vascular calcification in a large cohort of PXE patients with inherited mutations of the ABCC6 gene.

METHODS AND RESULTS

96 patients (61 women) matching the PXE criteria participated in this study. Their clinical history and status and bone biological markers were collected. Bone mineral density (BMD) was measured by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry and expressed as T- and Z-scores. Osteoporotic fractures were identified by X-ray, and coronary (CAC) and lower limb arterial calcification (LLAC) scores were determined by CT scan.

RESULTS

44% of the women were menopausal. Osteopenia was disclosed in 46% (17 women) while 23% (9 women) exhibited osteoporosis, 3 with severe osteoporosis. Fractures of an osteoporotic nature were authenticated in 3 patients (1 woman). Markers of bone remodelling processes (CTX, BSAP and osteocalcin) were within the normal range for our laboratory standards. Severe vitamin D deficiency (<25nmol/L) was found in 15%, while 51% exhibited no vitamin D deficiency (vitamin D≥50nmol/L). LLAC and CAC scores were significantly higher in the patients with a low T- and/or Z-score, although this difference disappeared in multivariate analysis with age as a confounding factor. There was no significant difference in LLAC and CAC between PXE patients with and without osteoporotic fractures. There was no statistically significant association between BMD, LLAC and CAC and any of the bone remodelling factors.

CONCLUSIONS

This is the first report on the bone mineralization process in PXE patients. Our data shows that PXE patients are not markedly prone to exaggerated bone demineralization and fracture risk, and prevalence of osteoporosis remains within the normal range for the general population. Furthermore, the relationships between LLAC, but not CAC, and BMD with age are similar to those observed in the general population. Therefore, despite its pivotal role in ectopic calcification, ABCC6 deficiency does not interfere with the bone-vascular axis. The lack of PXE-related disturbances between BMD and arterial calcification also supports vitamin D supplementation in PXE patients with vitamin D deficiency. Adverse reactions and rational use of proton pump inhibitors

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are a class of important drugs for treating acid related diseases, such as gastroesophageal reflux diseases (GERD), peptic ulcer, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and upper gastrointestinal bleeding. When combined with other drugs, PPIs can be used for the eradication of Helicobacter pylori. Short-term use of PPIs can cause allergic reactions, adverse reactions of the hematologic system, the digestive system and the nervous system and so on. Long-term use of PPIs can cause a series of new safety issues, such as increased risk of infection, vitamin B₁₂ deficiency caused by the lack of nutrients, fractures, hypomagnesemia, occurrence or development of atrophic gastritis, interstitial nephritis, microscopic colitis, increased risk of serious skin allergy and so on. However, inappropriate use and off-label use of PPIs, and even abuse of PPIs are very common worldwide. Therefore, clinical rational use of PPIs should be emphasized among the relevant national administration departments, clinicians and pharmacists.

Proton Pump Inhibitor Use and Magnesium Concentrations in Hemodialysis Patients: A Cross-Sectional Study

Magnesium concentration is a proven predictor of mortality in hemodialysis patients. Recent reports have indicated that proton pump inhibitor (PPI) use affects serum magnesium levels, however few studies have investigated the relationship between PPI use and magnesium levels in hemodialysis patients. This study aimed to clarify the association between PPI use and serum magnesium levels in hemodialysis patients. We designed this cross sectional study and included 1189 hemodialysis patients in stable condition. Associations between PPI and magnesium-related factors, as well as other possible confounders, were evaluated using a multiple regression model. We defined hypomagnesemia as a value < 2.0 mg/dL, and created comparable logistic regression models to assess the association between PPI use and hypomagnesemia. PPI use is associated with a significantly lower mean serum magnesium level than histamine 2 (H2) receptor antagonists or no acid-suppressive medications (mean [SD] PPI: 2.52 [0.45] mg/dL; H2 receptor antagonist: 2.68 [0.41] mg/dL; no acid suppressive medications: 2.68 [0.46] mg/dL; P = 0.001). Hypomagnesemia remained significantly associated with PPI (adjusted OR, OR: 2.05; 95% CI: 1.14–3.69; P = 0.017). PPI use is associated with an increased risk of hypomagnesemia in hemodialysis patients. Future prospective studies are needed to explore magnesium replacement in PPI users on hemodialysis.

Proton-pump inhibitors for prevention of upper gastrointestinal bleeding in patients undergoing dialysis

AIM: To investigate the preventive effects of low-dose proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs) for upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB) in end-stage renal disease.

METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study that reviewed 544 patients with end-stage renal disease who started dialysis at our center between 2005 and 2013. We examined the incidence of UGIB in 175 patients treated with low-dose PPIs and 369 patients not treated with PPIs (control group).

RESULTS: During the study period, 41 patients developed UGIB, a rate of 14.4/1000 person-years. The mean time between the start of dialysis and UGIB events was 26.3 ± 29.6 mo. Bleeding occurred in only two patients in the PPI group (2.5/1000 person-years) and in 39 patients in the control group (19.2/1000 person-years). Kaplan-Meier analysis of cumulative non-bleeding survival showed that the probability of UGIB was significantly lower in the PPI group than in the control group (log-rank test, P < 0.001). Univariate analysis showed that coronary artery disease, PPI use, anti-coagulation, and anti-platelet therapy were associated with UGIB. After adjustments for the potential factors influencing risk of UGIB, PPI use was shown to be significantly beneficial in reducing UGIB compared to the control group (HR = 13.7, 95%CI: 1.8-101.6; P = 0.011).

CONCLUSION: The use of low-dose PPIs in patients with end-stage renal disease is associated with a low frequency of UGIB.

Effect of low-dose proton pump inhibitor on preventing upper gastrointestinal bleeding in chronic kidney disease patients receiving aspirin

BACKGROUND AND AIM

Upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB) leads to significant morbidity and mortality in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. This study determined the efficacy of using a low-dose proton pump inhibitor (PPI) to reduce the risk of non-variceal UGIB in CKD patients receiving aspirin.

METHODS

We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 500 CKD patients who received aspirin between January 2008 and March 2013. Cumulative incidence analysis using the Kaplan-Meier method was performed to analyze the rate of non-variceal UGIB and association with the administration of low-dose PPI.

RESULTS

Of the 500 patients, 191 received low-dose PPI. Over the follow-up period, which lasted 1067 person-years, three patients in the low-dose PPI group (8.9 per 1000 person-years) and 19 patients in the non-PPI group (25.9 per 1000 person-years) developed non-variceal UGIB, respectively (P = 0.113). Low-dose PPI use did not decrease the risk of UGIB in CKD patients, including patients who did not receive dialysis (P = 0.127). However, according to the subgroup analysis of 230 patients who received dialysis, the low-dose PPI group (14.4 per 1000 person-years) demonstrated significantly reduced incidence and risk of non-variceal UGIB in comparison with the non-PPI group (53.8 per 1000 person-years) (P = 0.032).

CONCLUSION

Prophylactic low-dose PPI can reduce the risk of non-variceal UGIB in dialysis patients receiving aspirin.
