The boom era of emerging contaminants: A review of remediating agricultural soils by biochar

Emerging contaminants (ECs) are widely sourced persistent pollutants that pose a significant threat to the environment and human health. Their footprint spans global ecosystems, making their remediation highly challenging. In recent years, a significant amount of literature has focused on the use of biochar for remediation of heavy metals and organic pollutants in soil and water environments. However, the use of biochar for the remediation of ECs in agricultural soils has not received as much attention, and as a result, there are limited reviews available on this topic. Thus, this review aims to provide an overview of the primary types, sources, and hazards of ECs in farmland, as well as the structure, functions, and preparation types of biochar. Furthermore, this paper emphasizes the importance and prospects of three remediation strategies for ECs in cropland: (i) employing activated, modified, and composite biochar for remediation, which exhibit superior pollutant removal compared to pure biochar; (ii) exploring the potential synergistic efficiency between biochar and compost, enhancing their effectiveness in soil improvement and pollution remediation; (iii) utilizing biochar as a shelter and nutrient source for microorganisms in biochar-mediated microbial remediation, positively impacting soil properties and microbial community structure. Given the increasing global prevalence of ECs, the remediation strategies provided in this paper aim to serve as a valuable reference for future remediation of ECs-contaminated agricultural lands.

Urinary Paraben Concentrations and Associations with the Periconceptional Urinary Metabolome: Untargeted and Targeted Metabolomics Analyses of Participants from the Early Pregnancy Study

BACKGROUND

Parabens, found in everyday items from personal care products to foods, are chemicals with endocrine-disrupting activity, which has been shown to influence reproductive function.

OBJECTIVES

This study investigated whether urinary concentrations of methylparaben, propylparaben, or butylparaben were associated with the urinary metabolome during the periconceptional period, a critical window for female reproductive function. Changes to the periconceptional urinary metabolome could provide insights into the mechanisms by which parabens could impact fertility.

METHODS

Urinary paraben concentrations were measured in paired pre- and postconception urine samples from 42 participants in the Early Pregnancy Study, a prospective cohort of 221 women attempting to conceive. We performed untargeted and targeted metabolomics analyses using ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry. We used principal component analysis, orthogonal partial least-squares discriminant analysis, and permutation testing, coupled with univariate statistical analyses, to find metabolites associated with paraben concentration at the two time points. Potential confounders were identified with a directed acyclic graph and used to adjust results with multivariable linear regression. Metabolites were identified using fragmentation data.

RESULTS

Seven metabolites were associated with paraben concentration (variable importance to projection score > 1 , false discovery rate-corrected q -value < 0.1 ). We identified four diet-related metabolites to the Metabolomics Standards Initiative (MSI) certainty of identification level 2, including metabolites from smoke flavoring, grapes, and olive oil. One metabolite was identified to the class level only (MSI level 3). Two metabolites were unidentified (MSI level 4). After adjustment, three metabolites remained associated with methylparaben and propylparaben, two of which were diet-related. No metabolomic markers of endocrine disruption were associated with paraben concentrations.

DISCUSSION

This study identified novel relationships between urinary paraben concentrations and diet-related metabolites but not with metabolites on endocrine-disrupting pathways, as hypothesized. It demonstrates the feasibility of integrating untargeted metabolomics data with environmental exposure information and epidemiological adjustment for confounders. The findings underscore a potentially important connection between diet and paraben exposure, with applications to nutritional epidemiology and dietary exposure assessment. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP12125.

Urinary phenol concentrations and fecundability and early pregnancy loss

STUDY QUESTION

Are urinary phenol concentrations of methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, triclosan, benzophenone-3, 2,4-dichlorophenol or 2,5-dichlorophenol associated with fecundability and early pregnancy loss?

SUMMARY ANSWER

2,5-dichlorophenol concentrations were associated with an increased odds of early pregnancy loss, and higher concentrations of butylparaben and triclosan were associated with an increase in fecundability.

WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY

Phenols are chemicals with endocrine-disrupting potential found in everyday products. Despite plausible mechanisms of phenol reproductive toxicity, there are inconsistent results across few epidemiologic studies examining phenol exposure and reproductive function in non-fertility treatment populations.

STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION

Specimens and data were from the North Carolina Early Pregnancy Study prospective cohort of 221 women attempting to conceive naturally from 1982 to 1986. This analysis includes data from 221 participants across 706 menstrual cycles, with 135 live births, 15 clinical miscarriages and 48 early pregnancy losses (before 42 days after the last menstrual period).

PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODS

Participants collected daily first-morning urine specimens. For each menstrual cycle, aliquots from three daily specimens across the cycle were pooled within individuals and analyzed for phenol concentrations. To assess sample repeatability, we calculated intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) for each phenol. We evaluated associations between phenol concentrations from pooled samples and time to pregnancy using discrete-time logistic regression and generalized estimating equations (GEE), and early pregnancy loss using multivariable logistic regression and GEE.

MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE

ICCs for within-person variability across menstrual cycles in pooled phenol concentrations ranged from 0.42 to 0.75. There was an increased odds of early pregnancy loss with 2,5-dichlorophenol concentrations although the CIs were wide (5th vs 1st quintile odds ratio (OR): 4.79; 95% CI: 1.06, 21.59). There was an increased per-cycle odds of conception at higher concentrations of butylparaben (OR: 1.62; 95% CI: 1.08, 2.44) and triclosan (OR: 1.49; 95% CI: 0.99, 2.26) compared to non-detectable concentrations. No associations were observed between these endpoints and concentrations of other phenols examined.

LIMITATIONS, REASONS FOR CAUTION

Limitations include the absence of phenol measurements for male partners and a limited sample size, especially for the outcome of early pregnancy loss, which reduced our power to detect associations.

WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS

This study is the first to use repeated pooled measures to summarize phenol exposure and the first to investigate associations with fecundability and early pregnancy loss. Within-person phenol concentration variability underscores the importance of collecting repeated samples for future studies. Exposure misclassification could contribute to differences between the findings of this study and those of other studies, all of which used one urine sample to assess phenol exposure. This study also contributes to the limited literature probing potential associations between environmental exposures and early pregnancy loss, which is a challenging outcome to study as it typically occurs before a pregnancy is clinically recognized.

Estrogen induces shift in abundances of specific groups of the coral microbiome

Synthetic estrogens such as ethinylestradiol (EE2) are persistent micropollutants that are not effectively removed from wastewater by conventional treatments. These contaminants are released into waterbodies, where they disrupt endocrine systems of organisms and cause harmful effects such as feminization, infertility, reproduction problems and genital malformations. The consequences of this pollution for key marine ecosystems such as coral reefs and their associated microbiomes are underexplored. We evaluated the effects of EE2 concentrations of 100 ng L-1 and 100 µg L-1 on the coral metaorganism Mussismilia harttii. The results indicated no effects on visible bleaching or Fv/Fm ratios in the corals during a 17-day microcosm experiment. However, next-generation sequencing of 16S rDNA revealed a statistically significant effect of high EE2 concentrations on OTU richness, and shifts in specific microbial groups after treatments with or without EE2. These groups might be bioindicators of early shifts in the metaorganism composition caused by EE2 contamination.

Assessing the impact of synthetic estrogen on the microbiome of aerated submerged fixed-film reactors simulating tertiary sewage treatment and isolation of estrogen-degrading consortium

17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2) is a synthetic estrogen that can cause harmful effects on animals, such as male feminization and infertility. However, the impact of the EE2 contamination on microbial communities and the potential role of bacterial strains as bioremediation agents are underexplored. The aim of this work was to evaluate the impact of EE2 on the microbial community dynamics of aerated submerged fixed-film reactors (ASFFR) simulating a polishing step downstream of a secondary sewage treatment. For this purpose, the reactors were fed with a synthetic medium with low COD content (around 50 mg l^-1), supplemented (reactor H) or not (reactor C) with 1 μg l^-1 of EE2. Sludge samples were periodically collected during the bioreactors operation to assess the bacterial profile over time by 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing or by bacterial isolation using culture-dependent approach. The results revealed that the most abundant phyla in both reactors were Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes. At genus level, Chitinophagaceae, Nitrosomonas and Bdellovibrio predominated. Significant effects caused by EE2 treatment and bioreactors operating time were observed by non-metric multidimensional scaling. Therefore, even at low concentrations as 1 μg l^-1, EE2 is capable of influencing the bioreactor microbiome. Culture-dependent methods showed that six bacterial isolates, closely related to Pseudomonas and Acinetobacter genera, could grow on EE2 as the sole carbon source under aerobic conditions. These organisms may potentially be used for the assembly of an EE2-degrading bacterial consortium and further exploited for bioremediation applications, including tertiary sewage treatment to remove hormone-related compounds not metabolized in secondary depuration stages.

Sources of exposure to urinary phthalates among couples undergoing infertility treatment

Phthalates have been implicated as reproductive toxicants in animal models and in human populations. This study examined associations between potential exposure sources and urinary phthalate metabolite concentrations among women (n = 56) and their male partners (n = 43) undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF). On the day of oocyte retrieval, participants provided urine samples and completed questionnaires detailing use of personal care products (PCPs), and consumption of medications, foods, and beverages in the preceding 24 h. Urine was analyzed for MEP, MBP, MPP, MHxP, MEHP, MEHHP, MECPP, MiNP, MiDP, MCHP, and MBzP, via liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. We employed principal component analysis (PCA) to summarize exposure sources and regression models to estimate associations between exposure patterns and urinary phthalate metabolites, adjusted for confounding variables. Among women, application of more body washes and eye creams, and consumption of more supplements, was associated with greater urinary MECPP [relative difference = 1.36 (95% CI: 1.28, 1.45)] and the molar sum of DEHP metabolites, including MEHP, MEHHP, and MECPP [∑DEHP; 1.26 (95% CI: 1.17, 1.34)]. Among men, consumption of more supplements and allergy medications was associated with greater urinary MECPP, MEHHP, and ∑DEHP [relative difference = 1.13 (95% CI: 1.02, 1.23)] concentrations. Identifying differences in sources of phthalate exposure may help clinicians to intervene to reduce exposure as part of a comprehensive strategy to help improve IVF outcomes.

The adsorption, regeneration and engineering applications of biochar for removal organic pollutants: A review

In recent years, with the continuous development of industry and agriculture, the content of organic pollutants in the environment has been increasing, which has caused serious pollution to the environment. Adsorption has proven to be an effective and economically viable method of removing organic contaminants. Since biochar has many advantages such as various types of raw materials, low cost, and recyclability, it can achieve the effect of turning waste into treasure when used for environmental treatment. This paper summarizes the source and production of biochar, points out its research status in the removal of organic pollutants, expounds its adsorption mechanism on organic pollutants, introduces the relevant adsorption parameters, summarizes its regeneration methods, studies its application of engineering, and finally analyses of benefits and describes the development prospects.

Water contamination by endocrine disruptors: Impacts, microbiological aspects and trends for environmental protection

Hormone active agents constitute a dangerous class of pollutants. Among them, those agents that mimic the action of estrogens on target cells and are part of the group of endocrine-disruptor compounds (EDCs) are termed estrogenic EDCs, the main focus of this review. Exposure to these compounds causes a number of negative effects, including breast cancer, infertility and animal hermaphroditism. However, especially in underdeveloped countries, limited efforts have been made to warn people about this serious issue, explain the methods of minimizing exposure, and develop feasible and efficient mitigation strategies at different levels and in various environments. For instance, the use of bioremediation processes capable of transforming EDCs into environmentally friendly compounds has been little explored. A wide diversity of estrogen-degrading microorganisms could be used to develop such technologies, which include bioremediation processes for EDCs that could be implemented in biological filters for the post-treatment of wastewater effluent. This review describes problems associated with EDCs, primarily estrogenic EDCs, including exposure as well as the present status of understanding and the effects of natural and synthetic hormones and estrogenic EDCs on living organisms. We also describe potential biotechnological strategies for EDC biodegradation, and suggest novel treatment approaches for minimizing the persistence of EDCs in the environment.
