Creating and Sharing Digital ABA Instructional Activities: A Practical Tutorial

A Comparison of Telehealth-Based Instruction with or without Instructive Feedback

Language delays are commonly displayed by children on the autism spectrum. To help facilitate the development of verbal behavior, practitioners often implement intensive one-on-one, face-to-face instruction. However, the COVID-19 pandemic hindered typical face-to-face service delivery and caused practitioners to assess alternative approaches to facilitate clients' continued progress. Instructive feedback (IF) is one teaching strategy to enhance instruction or make it more efficient. During this teaching procedure, instructors provide formal teaching of target responses and embed demonstrations of secondary target responses within sequences of instruction. In the current study, we investigated the efficacy of IF provided within telehealth instruction. Four participants on the autism spectrum participated in the study. Participants received two forms of telehealth instruction that targeted speaker-responding. The first form consisted of discrete trial instruction (DTI), and the second form combined DTI with IF. These results indicate that both forms of instruction improved speaker-responding of primary targets for all participants. Additionally, a secondary analysis of secondary targets indicated that two of the four participants acquired some secondary targets. These results suggest that including IF within DTI might be beneficial for some participants receiving DTI via telehealth.

Caregiver-Implemented Digital Activity Schedules With Virtual Coaching

During the COVID-19 pandemic, many insurance companies approved the funding of telehealth-based behavior analytic services for both training and direct-care purposes. Activity schedules are a simple and effective intervention that can be used in the home environment to improve independence for children with ASD. Recent efforts have shifted the format of activity schedules from paper-based schedules to digital platforms that make the schedules more portable and provide easier access for both the caregiver and the Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). Google Slides^® is a readily available web-based platform that has been used to design and deliver behavior analytic instruction during the COVID-19 pandemic. A non-concurrent multiple baseline design across three child-caregiver dyads was used to evaluate the effectiveness of a caregiver-implemented digital activity schedule intervention on the independent play behaviors of children with ASD. The activity schedule was created and shared on the Google Slides^® platform and caregivers received bug-in-ear (BIE) coaching from practitioners to implement the intervention. Regardless of some minor treatment implementation difficulties attributed to the remote service delivery and the digital format, the digital platform and coaching intervention were effective in increasing independent schedule following with minimal training on the part of the caregiver. We hope that the results of this study provide BCBAs with additional guidance on effective interventions and procedures for remote service delivery.

Creating Responsive Asynchronous Instructional Sequences Using PowerPointTM for Microsoft 365®

The prevalence of distance education utilizing asynchronous instruction has increased in recent years. Asynchronous instruction differs from the more common synchronous instruction in that learners primarily contact the lessons and educational materials on their own rather than with a live instructor. Though not without its limitations, asynchronous instruction offers a variety of advantages that can make instruction more efficient, produce better outcomes, and increase accessibility to a greater variety of learners if created using known principles of effective instructional design. Though many platforms exist for creating asynchronous instruction, these are often accompanied by barriers to their widespread use. A potential cost-effective and flexible alternative to these is Microsoft® PowerPoint^TM. The present report serves as a guide for creating interactive and responsive asynchronous instructional sequences with PowerPoint for Microsoft 365® using principles and procedures derived from programmed instruction (Skinner, 1968). Ideas for additional response types are also provided, as are the limitations of designing instructional sequences with this software. Previous papers on the use of PowerPoint as an instructional tool have been primarily geared towards instruction for young learners or learners with autism. As such, the present article expands on the use of PowerPoint specifically to higher education.

Preliminary Practice Recommendations for Telehealth Direct Applied Behavior Analysis Services with Children with Autism

This article provides preliminary practice recommendations for telehealth direct applied behavior analysis (ABA) services for children with autism. In the face of COVID-19, there is an immediate need for discussion on how to implement various ABA procedures via telehealth for ABA practitioners. Alongside emerging scientific evidence on the effectiveness of telehealth direct service as well as various service-related guidelines, we provide preliminary practice recommendations that are based on the existing literature on in-person and telehealth ABA procedures. We also discuss these recommendations with case studies of two boys with autism. Social validity measures indicated that families were satisfied with telehealth direct services. Even after the COVID-19 pandemic has resolved itself, telehealth direct ABA service will still be a valuable option for remote and international locations where direct ABA service is limited, and thus, practice recommendations continue to be relevant for all practitioners that use telehealth direct service.

Adapting Direct Services for Telehealth: A Practical Tutorial

Due to the pandemic brought on by the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), consumers of applied behavior-analytic interventions may be experiencing disrupted access to services. In response to the need for services, behavior analysts and therapists may find themselves treading unchartered waters as they use telehealth to provide direct intervention to consumers. Direct service provision via telehealth extends beyond the bounds of existing telehealth research, which primarily focuses on caregiver training and consultation. In the transition to telehealth, behavior analysts can consider how to adapt an existing evidence base of behavior-analytic strategies from a face-to-face format to intervention via a teleconferencing platform (i.e., Zoom). In this tutorial, we provide practice recommendations, task analyses, and a curated list of Zoom walk-throughs to help behavior analysts construct conceptually systematic learning opportunities in their direct telehealth services. Leveraging teleconferencing features to provide behavior-analytic intervention directly to consumers could spur future research to support these need-inspired practices and guide telehealth applications during and beyond the current pandemic.

Creating Single-Subject Research Design Graphs with Google Applications

The visual analysis of graphically displayed data is an essential skill for behavior analysts across a range of settings. Although there are several computer-based applications that facilitate the production of simple, consistent, and visually coherent graphs, these applications have several limitations, including cost. An alternative to using these applications is using free and widely available Google Sheets and Google Slides to produce high-quality clinical and research graphs. We provide a step-by-step pictorially supported task analysis for a system for creating graphs for a variety of single-subject research designs and clinical applications using Sheets and Slides. We also discuss the advantages and limitations of using Google applications to create graphs for use in the practice of applied behavior analysis.
