Engineering Leaf-Like UiO-66-SO3H Membranes for Selective Transport of Cations

Elucidating the transport of water and ions in the nanochannel of covalent organic frameworks by molecular dynamics

Inspired by biological channels, achieving precise separation of ion/water and ion/ion requires finely tuned pore sizes at molecular dimensions and deliberate exposure of charged groups. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), a class of porous crystalline materials, offer well-defined nanoscale pores and diverse structures, making them excellent candidates for nanofluidic channels that facilitate ion and water transport. In this study, we perform molecular simulations to investigate the structure and kinetics of water and ions confined within the typical COFs with varied exposure of charged groups. The COFs exhibit vertically arrayed nanochannels, enabling diffusion coefficients of water molecules within COFs to remain within the same order of magnitude as in the bulk. The motion of water molecules manifests in two distinct modes, creating a mobile hydration layer around acid groups. The ion diffusion within COFs displays a notable disparity between monovalent (M+) and divalent (M2+) cations. As a result, the selectivity of M+/M2+ can exceed 100, while differentiation among M+ is less pronounced. In addition, our simulations indicate a high rejection (R > 98%) in COFs, indicating their potential as ideal materials for desalination. The chemical flexibility of COFs indicates that would hold significant promise as candidates for advanced artificial ion channels and separation membranes.

Congener-welded crystalline carbon nitride membrane for robust and highly selective Li/Mg separation

Extracting lithium from salt-lake brines critically relies on the separation of Li+ and Mg2+, which could combat the lithium shortage. However, designing robust sieving membrane with high Li+/Mg2+ selectivity in the long-time operation has remained highly challenging. Here, we demonstrate a bioinspired congener-welded crystalline carbon nitride membrane that can accomplish efficient and stable monovalent ion sieving over divalent Mg ion. The crystalline carbon nitrides have uniform and narrow pore size to reject the large hydrated Mg2+ and rich ligating sites to facilitate an almost barrierless Li+ transport as suggested by ab initio simulations. These crystals were then welded by vapor-deposited congeners, i.e., amorphous polymer carbon nitride, which have similar composition and chemistry with the crystals, forming intimate and compatible crystal/polymer interface. As a result, our membrane can sieve out highly dilute Li+ (0.002 M) from concentrated Mg2+ (1.0 M) with a high selectivity of 1708, and can be continuously operated for 10 days.

Bio-Inspired Subnanofluidics: Advanced Fabrication and Functionalization

Biological ion channels can realize high-speed and high-selective ion transport through the protein filter with the sub-1-nanometer channel. Inspired by biological ion channels, various kinds of artificial subnanopores, subnanochannels, and subnanoslits with improved ion selectivity and permeability are recently developed for efficient separation, energy conversion, and biosensing. This review article discusses the advanced fabrication and functionalization methods for constructing subnanofluidic pores, channels, tubes, and slits, which have shown great potential for various applications. Novel fabrication methods for producing subnanofluidics, including top-down techniques such as electron beam etching, ion irradiation, and electrochemical etching, as well as bottom-up approaches starting from advanced microporous frameworks, microporous polymers, lipid bilayer embedded subnanochannels, and stacked 2D materials are well summarized. Meanwhile, the functionalization methods of subnanochannels are discussed based on the introduction of functional groups, which are classified into direct synthesis, covalent bond modifications, and functional molecule fillings. These methods have enabled the construction of subnanochannels with precise control of structure, size, and functionality. The current progress, challenges, and future directions in the field of subnanofluidic are also discussed.

Fabrication of Oriented MOF-Based Mixed Matrix Membrane via Ion-Induced Synchronous Synthesis

Developing a facile strategy for constructing oriented mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) with uniformly dispersed and high-loading metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is a crucial scientific challenge in probing the enhanced capability and potential applications of MOF-polymer MMMs. Herein, a novel synchronous synthetic method for constructing oriented CuBDC/poly(m-phenylenediamine) (CuBDC/PmPD) MMM with uniform MOF dispersion at high loading at the air-solution interface via the dual function of metal ions is reported. The resulting MMM exhibits excellent separation performance in ion sieving and seawater desalination due to the structural integrity of the proposed membrane and the highly interconnected channels created through the oriented distribution of MOF in a polymer matrix. Such a cutting-edge approach may provide promising insights into the development of advanced MMMs with optimized structure and superior performances.

Lithium-Ion-Sieve-Embedded Hybrid Membranes for Anion-Exchange- and Cation-Concentration-Driven Li/Mg Separation

There is an urgent need to develop efficient and environmentally friendly technologies for separating Li+ from brines containing abundant Mg2+ to meet the growing demand for lithium resources. In this work, we prepared hybrid membranes by integrating hydrogen manganese oxide (HMO), a lithium-ion sieve, as a filler into anion-exchange membranes (AEMs), the quaternary ammonium-functionalized poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (QPPO) and poly(m-terphenyl piperidinium) (m-PTP). Cations are transported by electrostatic attraction originating from anions and the concentration difference across membranes. Because of the effects of electrostatic repulsion of the fixed cationic groups and steric resistance in AEMs, Li+ with less charge and smaller radius will preferentially pass through the membrane. In addition, the presence of HMO provides an additional fast transport channel for Li+, resulting in an enhanced Li+/Mg2+ separation performance. The results show that 20%HMO@m-PTP exhibits high Li+ flux (0.48 mol/m2·h) and Li+/Mg2+ selectivity (βLi+/Mg2+ = 14.1). Molecular dynamics simulations show that m-PTP has more free volume than QPPO, which is beneficial for rapid cation transport. Spectral analysis confirms the insertion and sieving of Li+ in HMO. This work illustrates the great potential of anion-exchange- and cation-concentration-driven hybrid membranes based on lithium-ion sieves for low-energy and efficient Li+ extraction processes.

Robust Zinc Anode Enabled by Sulfonate-Rich MOF-Modified Separator

Aqueous zinc ion batteries (ZIBs) hold great promise for large-scale energy storage; however, severe zinc dendritic growth and side reactions on the anode dramatically impede their commercial application. Herein, a Zr-based MOF (UiO-66) functionalized with a high density of sulfonic acid (─SO3 H) groups is used to modify the glass fiber (GF) separator of ZIBs, providing a unique solution for stabilizing Zn anode. Benefiting from the strong interaction between zincophilic -SO3 H and Zn2+ , this sulfonate-rich UiO-66 modified GF (GF@UiO-S2) separator not only guarantees the homogeneous distribution of ion flux, but also accelerates the ion migration kinetics. Hence, the GF@UiO-S2 separator promotes uniform Zn plating/stripping on the Zn anode and facilitates the desolvation of hydrated Zn2+ ions at the interface, which helps guide dendrite-free Zn deposition and inhibit undesired side reactions. Accordingly, the Zn||Zn symmetric cell with this separator achieves excellent cycling stability with a long cycle life exceeding 3450 h at 3 mA cm-2 . Besides, the Zn||MnO2 full cell paired with this separator delivers remarkable cyclability with 90% capacity retention after 1200 cycles. This design of metal-organic frameworks functionalized separators provides a new insight for constructing highly robust ZIBs.

Pathways to Next-Generation Fire-Safe Alkali-Ion Batteries

High energy and power density alkali-ion (i.e., Li+ , Na+ , and K+ ) batteries (AIBs), especially lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), are being ubiquitously used for both large- and small-scale energy storage, and powering electric vehicles and electronics. However, the increasing LIB-triggered fires due to thermal runaways have continued to cause significant injuries and casualties as well as enormous economic losses. For this reason, to date, great efforts have been made to create reliable fire-safe AIBs through advanced materials design, thermal management, and fire safety characterization. In this review, the recent progress is highlighted in the battery design for better thermal stability and electrochemical performance, and state-of-the-art fire safety evaluation methods. The key challenges are also presented associated with the existing materials design, thermal management, and fire safety evaluation of AIBs. Future research opportunities are also proposed for the creation of next-generation fire-safe batteries to ensure their reliability in practical applications.

Fundamental Perspectives on the Electrochemical Water Applications of Metal-Organic Frameworks

HIGHLIGHTS

The recent development and implementation of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and MOF-based materials in electrochemical water applications are reviewed. The critical factors that affect the performances of MOFs in the electrochemical reactions, sensing, and separations are highlighted. Advanced tools, such as pair distribution function analysis, are playing critical roles in unraveling the functioning mechanisms, including local structures and nanoconfined interactions. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a family of highly porous materials possessing huge surface areas and feasible chemical tunability, are emerging as critical functional materials to solve the growing challenges associated with energy-water systems, such as water scarcity issues. In this contribution, the roles of MOFs are highlighted in electrochemical-based water applications (i.e., reactions, sensing, and separations), where MOF-based functional materials exhibit outstanding performances in detecting/removing pollutants, recovering resources, and harvesting energies from different water sources. Compared with the pristine MOFs, the efficiency and/or selectivity can be further enhanced via rational structural modulation of MOFs (e.g., partial metal substitution) or integration of MOFs with other functional materials (e.g., metal clusters and reduced graphene oxide). Several key factors/properties that affect the performances of MOF-based materials are also reviewed, including electronic structures, nanoconfined effects, stability, conductivity, and atomic structures. The advancement in the fundamental understanding of these key factors is expected to shed light on the functioning mechanisms of MOFs (e.g., charge transfer pathways and guest-host interactions), which will subsequently accelerate the integration of precisely designed MOFs into electrochemical architectures to achieve highly effective water remediation with optimized selectivity and long-term stability.

Preparation and Lithium-Ion Separation Property of ZIF-8 Membrane with Excellent Flexibility

Metal-organic framework (MOF) membranes exhibit immense potential for separation applications due to their regular pore channels and scalable pore sizes. However, structuring a flexible and high-quality MOF membrane remains a challenge due to its brittleness, which severely restricts its practical application. This paper presents a simple and effective method in which continuous, uniform, defect-free ZIF-8 film layers of tunable thickness are constructed on the surface of inert microporous polypropylene membranes (MPPM). To provide heterogeneous nucleation sites for ZIF-8 growth, an extensive amount of hydroxyl and amine groups were introduced on the MPPM surface using the dopamine-assisted co-deposition technique. Subsequently, ZIF-8 crystals were grown in-situ on the MPPM surface using the solvothermal method. The resultant ZIF-8/MPPM exhibited a lithium-ion permeation flux of 0.151 mol m^-2 h^-1 and a high selectivity of Li⁺/Na⁺ = 1.93, Li⁺/Mg²⁺ = 11.50. Notably, ZIF-8/MPPM has good flexibility, and the lithium-ion permeation flux and selectivity remain unchanged at a bending curvature of 348 m^-1. These excellent mechanical characteristics are crucial for the practical applications of MOF membranes.

Systematic Thiol Decoration in a Redox-Active UiO-66-(SH)2 Metal-Organic Framework: A Case Study under Oxidative and Reductive Conditions

The practical applicability of thiolated metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) remains challenging due to their low crystallinity and transient stability. Herein, we present a one-pot solvothermal synthesis process using varying ratios of 2,5-dimercaptoterephthalic acid (DMBD) and 1,4-benzene dicarboxylic acid (100/0, 75/25, 50/50, 25/75, and 0/100) to prepare stable mixed-linker UiO-66-(SH)₂ MOFs (ML-U66SX). For each variant, the effects of different linker ratios on the crystallinity, defectiveness, porosity, and particle size have been discussed in detail. In addition, the impact of modulator concentration on these features has also been described. The stability of ML-U66SX MOFs was investigated under reductive and oxidative chemical conditions. The mixed-linker MOFs were used as sacrificial catalyst supports to highlight the interplay of template stability on the rate of the gold-catalyzed 4-nitrophenol hydrogenation reaction. The release of catalytically active gold nanoclusters originating from the framework collapse decreased with the controlled DMBD proportion, resulting in a 59% drop in the normalized rate constants (9.11-3.73 s^-1 mg^-1). In addition, post-synthetic oxidation (PSO) was used to further probe the stability of the mixed-linker thiol MOFs under harsh oxidative conditions. Following oxidation, the UiO-66-(SH)₂ MOF underwent immediate structural breakdown, unlike other mixed-linker variants. Along with crystallinity, the microporous surface area of the post-synthetically oxidized UiO-66-(SH)₂ MOF could be increased from 0 to 739 m² g^-1. Thus, the present study delineates a mixed-linker strategy to stabilize the UiO-66-(SH)₂ MOF under harsh chemical conditions through meticulous thiol decoration.

Two-Dimensional Imide-Based Covalent Organic Frameworks with Tailored Pore Functionality as Separators for High-Performance Li-S Batteries

Modifying the separator of lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) is considered to be one of the most effective strategies for relieving the notorious polysulfide shuttle effect. Constructing a stable, lightweight, and effective LSB separator is still a big challenge but highly desirable. Herein, a stable and lightweight imide-based covalent organic framework (COF-TpPa) is facilely fabricated on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) through an oxygen-free solvothermal technique. With the directing effect of rGO and changing the side functional group of the monomer, the morphology and the pore tailoring of COF-TpPa can be simultaneously achieved and two-dimensional (2D) COF nanosheets with different functionalities (such as -SO₃H and -Cl) are successfully constructed on rGO films. The specific functional groups inside the COF's pore channels and the narrowed pore size result in efficient absorption and restriction of Li₂S_n for weakening the "shuttle effect". Meanwhile, the 2D COF nanosheets on the rGO is a favorable morphology for better exploiting pores inside the COF materials. As a result, the COF-SO₃H-modified separator, consisting of rGO and COF-TpPa-SO₃H, exhibits a high specific capacity (1163.4 mA h/g at 0.2 C) and a desirable cyclic performance (60.2% retention rate after 1000 cycles at 2.0 C) for LSBs. Our study provides a feasible strategy to rationally design functional COFs and boosts their applications in various energy storage systems.

MOF-Like 3D Graphene-Based Catalytic Membrane Fabricated by One-Step Laser Scribing for Robust Water Purification and Green Energy Production

Increasing both clean water and green energy demands for survival and development are the grand challenges of our age. Here, we successfully fabricate a novel multifunctional 3D graphene-based catalytic membrane (3D-GCM) with active metal nanoparticles (AMNs) loading for simultaneously obtaining the water purification and clean energy generation, via a "green" one-step laser scribing technology. The as-prepared 3D-GCM shows high porosity and uniform distribution with AMNs, which exhibits high permeated fluxes (over 100 L m^-2 h^-1) and versatile super-adsorption capacities for the removal of tricky organic pollutants from wastewater under ultra-low pressure-driving (0.1 bar). After adsorption saturating, the AMNs in 3D-GCM actuates the advanced oxidization process to self-clean the fouled membrane via the catalysis, and restores the adsorption capacity well for the next time membrane separation. Most importantly, the 3D-GCM with the welding of laser scribing overcomes the lateral shear force damaging during the long-term separation. Moreover, the 3D-GCM could emit plentiful of hot electrons from AMNs under light irradiation, realizing the membrane catalytic hydrolysis reactions for hydrogen energy generation. This "green" precision manufacturing with laser scribing technology provides a feasible technology to fabricate high-efficient and robust 3D-GCM microreactor in the tricky wastewater purification and sustainable clean energy production as well.

Negatively Charged MOF-Based Composite Anion Exchange Membrane with High Cation Selectivity and Permeability

Every metal and metallurgical industry is associated with the generation of wastewater, influencing the living and non-living environment, which is alarming to environmentalists. The strict regulations about the dismissal of acid and metal into the environment and the increasing emphasis on the recycling/reuse of these effluents after proper remedy have focused the research community's curiosity in developing distinctive approaches for the recovery of acid and metals from industrial wastewaters. This study reports the synthesis of UiO-66-(COOH)₂ using dual ligand in water as a green solvent. Then, the prepared MOF nanoparticles were introduced into the DMAM quaternized QPPO matrix through a straightforward blending approach. Four defect-free UiO-66-(COOH)₂/QPPO MMMs were prepared with four different MOF structures. The BET characterization of UiO-66-(COOH)₂ nanoparticles with a highly crystalline structure and sub-nanometer pore size (~7 Å) was confirmed by XRD. Because of the introduction of MOF nanoparticles with an electrostatic interaction and pore size screening effect, a separation coefficient (S_HCl/FeCl2) of 565 and U_HCl of 0.0089 m·h^-1 for U-C(60)/QPPO were perceived when the loading dosage of the MOF content was 10 wt%. The obtained results showed that the prepared defect-free MOF membrane has broad prospects in acid recovery applications.

Highly Ion-Permselective Porous Organic Cage Membranes with Hierarchical Channels

Membranes of high ion permselectivity are significant for the separation of ion species at the subnanometer scale. Here, we report porous organic cage (i.e., CC3) membranes with hierarchical channels including discrete internal cavities and cage-aligned external cavities connected by subnanometer-sized windows. The windows of CC3 sieve monovalent ions from divalent ones and the dual nanometer-sized cavities provide pathways for fast ion transport with a flux of 1.0 mol m^-2 h^-1 and a mono-/divalent ion selectivity (e.g., K⁺/Mg²⁺) up to 10³, several orders of magnitude higher than the permselectivities of reported membranes. Molecular dynamics simulations illustrate the ion transport trajectory from the external to internal cavity via the CC3 window, where ions migrate in diverse hydration states following the energy barrier sequence of K⁺ < Na⁺ < Li⁺ ≪ Mg²⁺. This work sheds light on ion transport properties in porous organic cage channels of discrete frameworks and offers guidelines for developing membranes with hierarchical channels for efficient ion separation.

Angstrom-scale ion channels towards single-ion selectivity

Artificial ion channels with ion permeability and selectivity comparable to their biological counterparts are highly desired for efficient separation, biosensing, and energy conversion technologies. In the past two decades, both nanoscale and sub-nanoscale ion channels have been successfully fabricated to mimic biological ion channels. Although nanoscale ion channels have achieved intelligent gating and rectification properties, they cannot realize high ion selectivity, especially single-ion selectivity. Artificial angstrom-sized ion channels with narrow pore sizes <1 nm and well-defined pore structures mimicking biological channels have accomplished high ion conductivity and single-ion selectivity. This review comprehensively summarizes the research progress in the rational design and synthesis of artificial subnanometer-sized ion channels with zero-dimensional to three-dimensional pore structures. Then we discuss cation/anion, mono-/di-valent cation, mono-/di-valent anion, and single-ion selectivities of the synthetic ion channels and highlight their potential applications in high-efficiency ion separation, energy conversion, and biological therapeutics. The gaps of single-ion selectivity between artificial and natural channels and the connections between ion selectivity and permeability of synthetic ion channels are covered. Finally, the challenges that need to be addressed in this research field and the perspective of angstrom-scale ion channels are discussed.

Humidity sensors based on metal organic frameworks derived polyelectrolyte films

Application of metal organic frameworks (MOFs) on sensors is of great interest for researchers. Film forming ability of the sensing material is very important for both the preparation process and sensing properties of the devices. Humidity sensors based on UIO-66 derived polyelectrolyte films were well prepared by in situ thiol-ene click cross-linking polymerization in this work. The hydrophilicity of the sensing film could be controlled by the feed ratios. The optimized humidity sensor shows a fast response to RHs change (Res/Rec time is 3.1 s/1.5 s, respectively) with ∼1.2% RH of humidity hysteresis. The water molecules adsorption behavior of the film and the sensing mechanism were also be investigated. The humidity sensor with good water and thermal stability and repeatability was applied in breath monitoring, which can well distinguish different breath states.

Metal-organic framework-based micropipette is a metal ion responsive nanochannel after adsorbing H2S

Glass micropipettes are easy to fabricate, have excellent flexibility and stable properties. HKUST-1 and MIL-68(In) are in situ grown in the tip of a micropipette to construct porous nanochannels. After absorbing H2S, the MIL-68(In)-based nanochannel shows effective metal ion responsiveness for Hg2+-detection.

Recent Improvement Strategies on Metal-Organic Frameworks as Adsorbent, Catalyst, and Membrane for Wastewater Treatment

The accumulation of pollutants in water is dangerous for the environment and human lives. Some of them are considered as persistent organic pollutants (POPs) that cannot be eliminated from wastewater effluent. Thus, many researchers have devoted their efforts to improving the existing technology or providing an alternative strategy to solve this environmental problem. One of the attractive materials for this purpose are metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) due to their superior high surface area, high porosity, and the tunable features of their structures and function. This review provides an up-to-date and comprehensive description of MOFs and their crucial role as adsorbent, catalyst, and membrane in wastewater treatment. This study also highlighted several strategies to improve their capability to remove pollutants from water effluent.

Preparation and Desalination Performance of PA/UiO-66/PES Composite Membranes

UiO-66 nanoparticles are considered highly potential fillers for the application in desalination membranes. In this study, UiO-66 nanoparticles were anchored to PES membrane substrates, which were subsequently subjected to the interfacial polymerization reaction to coat a layer of polyamide (PA) on their surface. For comparison, a blank membrane incorporating no UiO-66 and a reference membrane incorporating ZrO2 (instead of UiO-66) were prepared. All prepared membranes were tested for their desalination performance. The membranes containing UiO-66 were found to outperform the blank and the reference counterparts. The reason for this outperformance is possibly attributed to the hydrophilicity of UiO-66 nanoparticles and the presence of nanochannels in their structure.

Scalable crystalline porous membranes: current state and perspectives

Crystalline porous materials (CPMs) with uniform and regular pore systems show great potential for separation applications using membrane technology. Along with the research on the synthesis of precisely engineered porous structures, significant attention has been paid to the practical application of these materials for preparation of crystalline porous membranes (CPMBs). In this review, the progress made in the preparation of thin, large area and defect-free CPMBs using classical and novel porous materials and processing is presented. The current state-of-the-art of scalable CPMBs with different nodes (inorganic, organic and hybrid) and various linking bonds (covalent, coordination, and hydrogen bonds) is revealed. The advances made in the scalable production of high-performance crystalline porous membranes are categorized according to the strategies adapted from polymer membranes (interfacial assembly, solution-casting, melt extrusion and polymerization of CPMs) and tailored based on CPM properties (seeding-secondary growth, conversion of precursors, electrodeposition and chemical vapor deposition). The strategies are compared and ranked based on their scalability and cost. The potential applications of CPMBs have been concisely summarized. Finally, the performance and challenges in the preparation of scalable CPMBs with emphasis on their sustainability are presented.
