A magnetic graphene oxide and UiO-66 based homogeneous dual recognition electrochemical aptasensor for accurate and sensitive detection of aflatoxin B1

Aflatoxin (AFs) contamination is one of the serious food safety issues. Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is the most common and toxic aflatoxin, which has been classified as a class 1 carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). It is extremely destructive to liver tissue. Developing a convenient and sensitive detection technique is essential. In this paper, we developed a homogeneous dual recognition strategy based electrochemical aptasensor for accurate and sensitive detection of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) based on the magnetic graphene oxide (MGO) and UiO-66. The MGO was synthesized for the recognition and magnetic separation of AFB1 from complex samples. UiO-66/ferrocenecarboxylic acid (Fc)/aptamer composites were constructed as both recognition and signal probes. The probes would specifically capture AFB1 enriched by MGO, which enables dual recognition in homogeneous solution, thus further improving the accuracy of AFB1 detection. The electrochemical aptasensor for AFB1 had a linear range from 0.005 to 500 ng mL-1. Additionally, the limit of detection was 1 pg mL-1. It shows a favorable potential for both sensitive and accurate detection of AFB1 in real samples.

Porous ionic liquids for oxidative desulfurization influenced by electrostatic solvent effect

Developing a highly efficient strategy for the stabilization of the solid-liquid interface is a persistent pursuit for researchers. Herein, porous ionic liquids based on UiO-66 (Zr) porous materials were synthesized and applied to the selective desulfurization catalysis, which integrates the permanent pores of porous solids with the exceptional properties of ionic liquids. Results show that porous ionic liquids possess high activity and selectivity for dibenzothiophene. Experimental analysis and density functional theory calculations revealed that the ionic liquids moiety served as an extractant to enrich dibenzothiophene into the porous ionic liquids phase through the π···π and CH···π interactions. Additionally, the electrostatic solvent effect in the porous ionic liquids contributes to the stabilization solid-liquid interface, which was favorable for UiO-66 moiety to catalytically activate hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to generate ·OH radicals, and subsequently oxidized dibenzothiophene to the corresponding sulfone. It is hoped that the development of porous ionic liquids could pave a new route to the stabilization of the solid-liquid interface for catalytic oxidation.

Catalytic hairpin self-assembly amplification fluorescence detection of chloramphenicol based on cross-shaped DNA and UiO-66

A catalytic hairpin self-assembly (CHA) amplification method was developed for CAP detection based on cross-shaped DNA and UiO-66. MOF was used to quench the fluorescent signal of FAM labeled DNA. Cross-shaped DNA with four fluorophore group (FAM) was utilized to enhance the fluorescent intensity. CAP could open hairpin structure of H-apt and induce CHA reaction. The product of CHA hybridized with cross-shaped DNA, resulting its leaving from the surface of UiO-66 and recovery of fluorescent signal. The limit of detection (LOD) was low to 0.87 pM. This method had been successfully applied for the detection of CAP in actual samples. Importantly, the high sensitivity was attributed to the great amplification efficiency of CHA, strong fluorescent intensity of cross-shaped DNA structure and great fluorescent quenched efficiency of UiO-66.

Preparation of UiO-66 loaded Letrozole nano-drug delivery system: enhanced anticancer and apoptosis activity

The use of drug delivery systems in targeting and achieving the targeting of drugs in treating diseases, especially cancer, has attracted the attention of researchers. Letrozole is one of the drugs for the treatment of breast cancer. In this study, the organic-metallic pharmaceutical porous nanostructure based on zirconium UiO-66 loaded letrozole was synthesized. Its cytotoxicity and effect on apoptosis and migration against breast cancer cell line were investigated. In this experimental study, the UiO-66 nanoparticle-loaded letrozole was synthesized using zirconium chloride (ZrCl4), dimethylformamide (DMF), and HCl. Its characteristics were determined by scanning electron microscopy, and its average size was determined by the DLS method. Also, the rate of letrozole drug release from the nanoparticle was investigated in 24, 48, and 72 h. In addition, its cytotoxicity effects were investigated using the MTT colorimetric method at concentrations of 3.125-100 µg/ml against the breast cancer cell line (MCF-7) in the periods of 48 and 72 h. Also, the expression level of apoptotic genes Bax and Bcl2 was investigated by the Real-Time PCR method. Also, the amount of cell migration was done by the migration assay method. The results showed that UiO-66 bound to letrozole had a spherical morphology and an average size of 9.2 ± 160.1. Also, the letrozole drug was loaded by 62.21 ± 1.80% in UiO-66 nanoparticles and had a slower release pattern than free letrozole in the drug release test, so within 72 h, 99.99% of free letrozole was released in If in UiO-66 containing letrozole, 57.55% of the drug has been released. Also, the cytotoxicity results showed that UiO-66 bound to letrozole has more significant cytotoxic effects than free letrozole (p < 0.05). Also, the results of Bax and Bcl2 gene expression showed that the treatment of MCF-7 cells with UiO-66 nanoparticles attached to letrozole increased the expression of Bax and Bcl2 genes compared to the reference gene Beta-actin in MCF-7 cell line, respectively. (p < 0.05) increased by 3.71 ± 0.42 and (p < 0.01) decreased by 0.636 ± 0.034 (p < 0.05). Cell migration results showed that the concentration of 50 µg/ml of UiO-66 bound to letrozole decreased the migration of MCF-7 cells. Generally, the results of this study showed that UiO-66 loaded letrozole can be used as a suitable drug carrier for cellular purposes, as it has increased the effects of cytotoxicity and the rate of apoptosis in breast cancer cell line (MCF-7), so it can be used with more studies used nanocarriers as a drug delivery system.

Designing Metal-Organic Framework (MOF) Membranes for Isomer Separation

Membrane-based separation has the merit of low carbon footprint. In this study, the pore size of metal-organic framework (MOF) membranes is rationally designed for discriminating various pairs of hydrocarbon isomers. Specifically, Zr-MOF UiO-66 (UiO stands for University of Oslo) membranes are developed for separating p/o-xylene due to their proper pore size. For n-hexane/2-methylpentane separation, the functional groups and proportion of the ligands in UiO-66 are gradually adjusted to effectively regulate the pore size, and UiO-66-33Br membranes are constructed. In addition, relying on the utilization of ligands with shorter length, MOF-801 membranes with smaller pore size are fabricated for n/i-butane separation.

Comparative study of synthesis methods and pH-dependent adsorption of methylene blue dye on UiO-66 and NH2-UiO-66

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are highly promising adsorbents with notable properties such as elevated adsorption capacities and versatile surface design capabilities. This study introduces two distinct synthesis methods, one lasting 1 h and the other 24 h, for UiO-66 and NH2-UiO-66. While both methods yield structures with comparable crystallinity and morphology, the adsorption performance of the cationic methylene blue dye varies at different pH levels. Despite the 24 h synthesis time being optimal for maximum adsorption in both MOFs, the relative difference in NH2-UiO-66 adsorption percentage at different times suggests reduced dependency on synthesis time for this property. Notably, NH2-UiO-66 exhibits consistent and effective performance across three pH levels, warranting further investigation into its adsorption kinetics and isotherm. The achievement of high adsorption efficiency coupled with a significantly reduced synthesis time underscores the importance of developing simplified synthetic methods, essential for enhancing the practical applicability of MOFs in diverse applications.

Efficient removal of U(VI) from aqueous solution by CNN/UiO-66 under simulated sunlight irradiation: the synergy of adsorption and photocatalysis

The reduction of soluble U(VI) to insoluble and less toxic U(IV) by photocatalysis is an effective method to control uranium contamination. The graphitic carbon nitride nanosheet (CNN)/UiO-66 composites (CNNU) were prepared by thermal polymerization and solvothermal methods for the removal of U(VI). The morphology, crystal structure and optical properties of composites were analyzed by SEM, XRD, BET, UV-DRS, PL and EIS. The results showed the introduction of UiO-66 increased the specific surface of CNN from 9.07 m2/g to 46.24 m2/g, and effectively suppressed the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes and improved the photocatalytic activity. The U(VI) removal capacity by adsorption and photocatalysis of CNNU was reached 779.47 mg/g, which significantly higher than that of adsorption (478.38 mg/g). The adsorption process was found to conform to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isothermal model. Meanwhile, U(VI) adsorbed on the CNNU was reduced to U(IV) via e- and ·O2- generated in the photocatalytic process. Therefore, this outstanding performance of CNNU in U(VI) removal is attributed to the synergistic effect of adsorption and photocatalytic reduction.

Development of a novel bionanocomposite of UiO-66/xanthan gum/alginate crosslinked by calcium chloride for azo dye removal: Insight into adsorption kinetics, isotherms, and thermodynamics

In the present work, UiO-66/xanthan gum/alginate bionanocomposite adsorbent was fabricated using the in-situ crosslinking-gelation method, characterized by different techniques, and finally used for the removal of methylene blue dye from aqueous solution. Adsorption studies were performed using batch experiments and the influencing operational parameters such as contact time, initial pH solution, temperature, initial dye concentration, adsorbent dose, pHPZC, swelling, regeneration, and reuse of the adsorbent were investigated. The various kinetic models (pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, Elovich, and intraparticle diffusion) and isotherm models (Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, and Dubinin-Radushkevich) were used to analysis of the experiment results. The results were best fitted to the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models. The maximum adsorption capacity of dye on the adsorbent was obtained at 9.96 mg/g at pH = 11. The value of pHPZC for the adsorbent was obtained at about 8. According to thermodynamic parameters, the dye adsorption was found as spontaneous and endothermic due to the negative value of the ΔG° and ΔH°. After 4 times of reusability cycles, the adsorption efficiency remained above 86 %, which represented a certain regeneration ability. As a result, this research indicates that UiO-66/xanthan gum/alginate bionanocomposite can be utilized as a promising bio-adsorbent for azo dye removal from contaminated wastewater.

Mechanochemical Encapsulation of Caffeine in UiO-66 and UiO-66-NH2 to Obtain Polymeric Composites by Extrusion with Recycled Polyamide 6 or Polylactic Acid Biopolymer

The development of capsules with additives that can be added to polymers during extrusion processing can lead to advances in the manufacturing of textile fabrics with improved and durable properties. In this work, caffeine (CAF), which has anti-cellulite properties, has been encapsulated by liquid-assisted milling in zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with different textural properties and chemical functionalization: commercial UiO-66, UiO-66 synthesized without solvents, and UiO-66-NH2 synthesized in ethanol. The CAF@MOF capsules obtained through the grinding procedure have been added during the extrusion process to recycled polyamide 6 (PA6) and to a biopolymer based on polylactic acid (PLA) to obtain a load of approximately 2.5 wt% of caffeine. The materials have been characterized by various techniques (XRD, NMR, TGA, FTIR, nitrogen sorption, UV-vis, SEM, and TEM) that confirm the caffeine encapsulation, the preservation of caffeine during the extrusion process, and the good contact between the polymer and the MOF. Studies of the capsules and PA6 polymer+capsules composites have shown that release is slower when caffeine is encapsulated than when it is free, and the textural properties of UiO-66 influence the release more prominently than the NH2 group. However, an interaction is established between the biopolymer PLA and caffeine that delays the release of the additive.

Probing oxygen exchange between UiO-66(Zr) MOF and water using 17 O solid-state NMR

The Zr-based Metal Organic Framework (MOF) UiO-66(Zr) is widely employed owing to its good thermal and chemical stabilities. Although the long-range structure of this MOF is preserved in the presence of water during several days, little is known about the formation of defects, which cannot be detected using diffraction techniques. We apply here 17 O solid-state NMR spectroscopy at 18.8 T to investigate the reactivity of UiO-66, through the exchange of oxygen atoms between the different sites of the MOF and water. For that purpose, we have selectively enriched in 17 O isotope the carboxylate groups of UiO-66(Zr) by using it with 17 O-labeled terephthalic acid prepared using mechanochemistry. In the presence of water at 50 °C and a following dehydration at 150 °C, we observe an overall exchange of O atoms between COO- and μ3 -O2- sites. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the three distinct oxygen sites, μ3 -OH, μ3 -O2- and COO- , of UiO-66(Zr) MOF can be enriched in 17 O isotope by post-synthetic hydrothermal treatment in the presence of 17 O-enriched water. These results demonstrate the lability of Zr-O bonds and the reactivity of UiO-66(Zr) with water.

Defective UiO-66 metal-organic gels for optimizing gaseous toluene capture

Developing high-performance sorbents for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is urgently required for environmental cleaning and personnel protection. Zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs) have been deemed attractive candidates for gaseous toluene capture due to their superior stability and high adsorption capacity. However, the practical application of powdered Zr-MOFs is hindered by inherent limitations. Here, we report a series of defective UiO-66 metal-organic gels (G66-X) with variable missing linker deficiency by altering the modulator concentration. The defect concentration of the adsorbents has a significant impact on the porosity and gaseous toluene adsorption capacity. Dynamic breakthrough results reveal that G66-9 demonstrates optimal breakthrough time of 336 min/g and uptake amount of 334 mg/g, outperforming those of many other typical toluene adsorbents. The breakthrough times and the uptake capacities dramatically decrease with the increase of adsorption temperature. An outstanding regeneration performance of adsorbents can almost maintain even after five adsorption-desorption cycles.

Ultrasmall Functionalized UiO-66 Nanoparticle/Polymer Pebax 1657 Thin-Film Nanocomposite Membranes for Optimal CO2 Separation

Ultrasmall 4 to 6 nm nanoparticles of the metal-organic framework (MOF) UiO-66 (University of Oslo-66) were successfully prepared and embedded into the polymer Pebax 1657 to fabricate thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) membranes for CO2/N2 and CO2/CH4 separations. Furthermore, it has been demonstrated that ligand functionalization with amino (-NH2) and nitro (-NO2) groups significantly enhances the gas separation performance of the membranes. For CO2/N2 separation, 7.5 wt % UiO-66-NH2 nanoparticles provided a 53% improvement in CO2 permeance over the pristine membrane (from 181 to 277 GPU). Regarding the CO2/N2 selectivity, the membranes prepared with 5 wt % UiO-66-NO2 nanoparticles provided an increment of 17% over the membrane without the MOF (from 43.5 to 51.0). However, the CO2 permeance of this membrane dropped to 155 GPU. The addition of 10 wt % ZIF-94 particles with an average particle size of ∼45 nm into the 5 wt % UiO-66-NO2 membrane allowed to increase the CO2 permeance to 192 GPU while maintaining the CO2/N2 selectivity at ca. 51 due to the synergistic interaction between the MOFs and the polymer matrix provided by the hydrophilic nature of ZIF-94. In the case of CO2/CH4 separation, the 7.5 wt % UiO-66-NH2 membrane exhibited the best performance with an increase of the CO2 permeance from 201 to 245 GPU.

Size-Based Norfentanyl Detection with SWCNT@UiO-MOF Composites

Single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT)@metal-organic framework (MOF) field-effect transistor (FET) sensors generate a signal through analytes restricting ion diffusion around the SWCNT surface. Four composites made up of SWCNTs and UiO-66, UiO-66-NH2, UiO-67, and UiO-67-CH3 were synthesized to explore the detection of norfentanyl (NF) using SWCNT@MOF FET sensors with different pore sizes. Liquid-gated FET devices of SWCNT@UiO-67 showed the highest sensing response toward NF, whereas SWCNT@UiO-66 and SWCNT@UiO-66-NH2 devices showed no sensitivity improvement compared to bare SWCNT. Comparing SWCNT@UiO-67 and SWCNT@UiO-67-CH3 indicated that the sensing response is modulated by not only the size-matching between NF and MOF channel but also NF diffusion within the MOF channel. Additionally, other drug metabolites, including norhydrocodone (NH), benzoylecgonine (BZ), and normorphine (NM) were tested with the SWCNT@UiO-67 sensor. The sensor was not responding toward NH and or BZ but a similar sensing result toward NM because NM has a similar size to NF. The SWCNT@MOF FET sensor can avoid interference from bigger molecules but sensor arrays with different pore sizes and chemistries are needed to improve the specificity.

Stability of Zr-Based UiO-66 Metal-Organic Frameworks in Basic Solutions

Although Zr-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) exhibit robust chemical and physical stability in the presence of moisture and acidic conditions, their susceptibility to nucleophilic attacks from bases poses a critical challenge to their overall stability. Herein, we systematically investigate the stability of Zr-based UiO-66 (UiO = University of Oslo) MOFs in basic solutions. The impact of 11 standard bases, including inorganic salts and organic bases, on the stability of these MOFs is examined. The destruction of the framework is confirmed through powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) patterns, and the monitored dissolution of ligands from the framework is assessed using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Our key findings reveal a direct correlation between the strength and concentration of the base and the destruction of the MOFs. The summarized data provide valuable insights that can guide the practical application of Zr-based UiO-66 MOFs under basic conditions, offering essential information for their optimal utilization in various settings.

Heating-induced adsorption promoting the efficient removal of toluene by the metal-organic framework UiO-66 (Zr) under visible light

The removal of indoor/outdoor toluene by photocatalysis has drawn much attention due to its low energy consumption and easy availability. However, light inevitably generates heat, and pollutants desorb from catalysts as the temperature rises, which is not beneficial to degradation. Contrast to the frequently occurred phenomena, we firstly found that the adsorption capacity of UiO-66 (Zr) on toluene increased with increasing temperature as adsorption isotherms and in-situ Fourier transform infrared spectra (in-situ FTIR) showed. The optimum temperature was 30 °C. This stage in which adsorption capacity was positively correlated with temperature was called heating-induced adsorption, which achieved a toluene removal efficiency of 69.6 %. By density functional theory (DFT) calculations and changing the metal centers and organic ligands of UiO-66 (Zr) respectively, we disclosed that the heating-induced adsorption was mainly related to the π-π stacking interaction of MOF ligands and toluene. The analysis of samples before and after adsorption showed that the interaction between UiO-66 (Zr) and adsorbed toluene facilitated the charge transfer and prolonged the carrier lifetime, leading to the increase of hydroxyl radicals (•OH) in photocatalysis. Therefore, a synergistic effect between heating-induced adsorption and photocatalysis was proposed by analyzing the adsorption of toluene on UiO-66 (Zr) in detail. This work provided new viewpoint to understand the role of concomitant heat contributed to the adsorption and degradation of toluene during photocatalysis.

Localized electron-accepted yellow-emission carbon dots encapsulated in UiO-66 for efficient visible-light driven photocatalytic activity

Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) possess a large surface area, inherent porosity and high crystallinity. Nevertheless, they lack electron acceptors, which limit the exploitation of their photocatalytic properties. Carbon dots (CDs) known for excellent optical properties can serve as localized electron acceptors. As a novel hybrid nanomaterial, the structure of CDs@MOFs effectively facilitates charge separation and carrier transfer, bring about a marked improvement of photocatalytic activity. In this study, yellow-emission carbon dots (YCDs) were encapsulated within zirconium-based metal organic framework (UiO-66) via a dynamic adsorption method. Compared with blue carbon dots (BCDs), the YCDs@UiO-66 exhibited superior degradation performance. It demonstrates that incorporation of YCDs broadens the UV absorption range of UiO-66, thereby enhancing light utilization. The degradation efficiency of YCDs@UiO-66 was 92.6%, whereas UiO-66 alone achieved only 63.1%. Notably, the results of the radical quenching experiment and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) revealed that h+ and •O2- played a prominent role in the photodegradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH). This study highlights that the introducing YCDs in MOFs-mediated photocatalytic reactions is a viable strategy to improve catalytic efficiency.

Synergistic effect of hierarchical topographic structure on 3D-printed Titanium scaffold for enhanced coupling of osteogenesis and angiogenesis

The significance of the osteogenesis-angiogenesis relationship in the healing process of bone defects has been increasingly emphasized in recent academic research. Surface topography plays a crucial role in guiding cellular behaviors. Metal-organic framework (MOF) is an innovative biomaterial with nanoscale structural and topological features, enabling the modulation of scaffold physicochemical properties. This study involved the loading of varying quantities of UiO-66 nanocrystals onto alkali-heat treated 3D-printed titanium scaffolds, resulting in the formation of hierarchical micro/nano topography named UiO-66/AHTs. The physicochemical properties of these scaffolds were subsequently characterized. Furthermore, the impact of these scaffolds on the osteogenic potential of BMSCs, the angiogenic potential of HUVECs, and their intercellular communication were investigated. The findings of this study indicated that 1/2UiO-66/AHT outperformed other groups in terms of osteogenic and angiogenic induction, as well as in promoting intercellular crosstalk by enhancing paracrine effects. These results suggest a promising biomimetic hierarchical topography design that facilitates the coupling of osteogenesis and angiogenesis.

Preparation of lysozyme-imprinted mesoporous Zr-based metal-organic frameworks with remarkable specific recognition

The development of high-performance protein-imprinted materials remains challenging due to defects concerning high mass transfer resistance and non-specific binding, which are crucial for protein purification and enrichment. In this paper, lysozyme-imprinted mesoporous Zr-based MOF (mesoUiO-66-NH2@MIPs) with specific and selective recognition of lysozyme (Lyz) were prepared by surface imprinting technology. In particular, the excellent hydrophilicity mesoporous MOFs (mesoUiO-66-NH2) with a pore size of 10 nm was prepared as a carrier for Lyz immobilization by an auxiliary modulation strategy to regulate the microporous structure of UiO-66-NH2 with the propionic acid solution, enabling massive loading of the macromolecular protein Lyz. The mesoUiO-66-NH2@MIPs reached a maximum saturation adsorption of 206.54 mg g-1 on Lyz in 20 min at 25 °C with an imprinting factor of 2.57 and selection factors of 2.02, 2.34, and 2.45 for cytochrome c (Cyt c), bovine serum albumin (BSA) and bovine hemoglobin (BHb), respectively. More importantly, the mesoUiO-66-NH2@MIPs could specifically recognize Lyz from the mixed protein system. The adsorption capacity of Lyz could still reach 78.55% after 5 cycles with good cyclic regeneration performance. This provides a new research option for developing and applying novel porous MOF in biomolecule imprinting technology and the specific separation of biomolecules.

A filter-electrochemical microfluidic chip for multiple surface protein analysis of exosomes to detect and classify breast cancer

Breast cancer (BC) is a complex disease with high variability and no specific tumor markers available for diagnosis. Exosomes contain rich maternal tumor information and are a novel non-invasive biomarker with the potential for cancer diagnosis and prognosis. However, analysis of exosomal protein markers in blood samples is challenging due to lengthy sample workups and insufficient sensitivity. To address this difficulty, we developed a novel filter-electrochemical microfluidic chip (FEMC) to detect and classify BC directly in whole blood without requiring heavy purification methods. In our system, exosome enrichment was performed using a dual filtration system. The target was directed through a curved channel onto four screen-printed electrodes (SPEs), where it was captured by the previously modified antibodies. Simultaneously, Zr-MOFs encapsulated with a large number of methylene blue molecules (MB@UiO-66) were absorbed on the surface of exosomes due to the high affinity for phosphate groups. This process leads to the amplification of electrical signals. The approach demonstrated that the utilization of BC exosome-associated tumor biomarkers (i.e., PMSA, EGFR, CD81, and CEA), enabled the classification of various BC mouse models samples and clinical BC samples. The entire FEMC assay was completed in 1 h with a limit of detection of 1 × 104 particles/mL. Thus, the FEMC assay can provide real-time detection information, allowing timely and better-informed opportunities for clinical BC diagnosis and typing.

Construction of urchin-like core-shell Fe/Fe2O3@UiO-66 hybrid for effective tetracycline reduction and photocatalytic oxidation

Although Fe/Fe2O3 has potential application compared with nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI), its smooth structure largely limits the catalytic performance. To address this challenge, we innovatively constructed highly efficient composite Fe/Fe2O3@UiO-66 via employing an urchin-like core-shell structure of Fe/Fe2O3 onto UiO-66 through a facile ion exchange precipitation method without inert gas protection. The characterization results show the urchin-like core-shell configuration can extend the life span of Fe0 and produce more active sites. Besides, the absorption spectrum is broadened by Fe2O3 which has narrow band gap and the high-efficiency separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs is obtained with the load of Fe/Fe2O3. Moreover, Two-parameter pseudo-first-order decay model fits well with the reduction and adsorption of composites in the dark reaction, and a plausible pathway for tetracycline (TC) degradation is also proposed. The findings of this research provide a promising method for promoting the catalytic properties of MOF-based materials and Fe/Fe2O3.

Investigating the potential of structurally defective UiO-66 for Sb (V) removal from tailing wastewater

Antimony contamination of tailings from the mining process remain attracted a great amount of concern. In this study, defective UiO-66-X crystal materials are rationally constructed using trifluoroacetic acid and hydrochloric acid as modulators for the removal of Sb(V) from actual tailing sand leachates. XRD and TG characterizations reveal that the number and kind of defects in UiO-66 are influenced by the type of modulators and the addition of trifluoroacetic acid makes UiO-66-TFA contain both cluster and ligand defects. Adsorption experiments show that UiO-66 and UiO-66-HCl achieve 100% removal of Sb(V) at pH 7.5 of the tailing sand leachate, and up to 90% removal of Sb(V) by the three materials at pH 2.5. It is noteworthy that the removal rate of Sb(V) by UiO-66-HCl is still satisfactory even under strongly acidic conditions at pH 0.5, with good potential for practical applications. Four kinetic models are used to fit the adsorption data and the analysis shows that the mechanism of Sb(V) adsorption by three adsorbent is all pseudo-second order and chemisorption acts as an important role in the adsorption process. In addition, the fixed bed adsorption experiments show that the material exhibit good prospects for practical applications.

Rational design of MOF@COF composites with multi-site functional groups for enhanced elimination of U(VI) from aqueous solution

Both environment and human beings were menaced by the widespread application of radioactive uranium, high-performance and effective elimination of uranium from wastewater is of important meaning for development of environmental sustainability in the future. In this study, the water-stable MOF material and the highly crystalline COF were compounded by a mild hydrothermal strategy, which achieved efficient removal of U(VI) through the synergistic effect. The composites showed the characteristics of both COFs and MOFs, which will possess higher stability, larger surface area and faster adsorption efficiency that cannot be carried out by a single component. Batch experiments and characterizations (SEM, TEM, XRD, FT-IR, BET, XPS, etc.) indicated that UiO-66-NH2@LZU1 had more stable and multi-layer pore structure and rich active functional groups. The Langmuir model and the pseudo-second-order kinetics fitting was more suitable for the U(VI) elimination process. The greatest uranium adsorbing capacity of UiO-66-NH2@LZU1 (180.4 mg g-1) was observed to exceed the UiO-66-NH2 (108.8 mg g-1) and COF-LZU1 (65.8 mg g-1), which reached the excellent hybrid effects. Furthermore, FT-IR and XPS analyses confirmed that the most nitrogen-containing group from COF-LZU1 and oxygen-containing group of UiO-66-NH2 could be combined with U(VI). In addition, electrostatic interaction was also a mechanism during the removal process. This work displayed that UiO-66-NH2@LZU1 was a prospective hybrid material for radioactive waste remediation. The compound method and application mentioned in this work had provided a theoretical basis for designing and developing multi-functional composite adsorbents, which contributed to the development of new materials for radioactive wastewater treatment technologies.

Magnetic Fe3O4/bamboo-based activated carbon/UiO-66 composite as an environmentally friendly and effective adsorbent for removal of Bisphenol A

The magnetic Fe3O4/bamboo-based activated carbon/Zr-based metal-organic frameworks composite (Fe3O4/BAC/UiO-66) was prepared by hydrothermal method. The as-prepared material was analyzed via TEM, XRD, FT-IR, BET-BJH, VSM and XPS techniques, the results showed that it had good dispersion and magnetic separation capacity (Ms = 44.06 emu∙g-1). Then, the adsorption properties of materials for bisphenol A (BPA) were studied. The results revealed that the removal efficiency of 50 mg·L-1 BPA by 0.1 g of adsorbent can reach 87.18-95% in a wide pH range. Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second-order kinetic well fitted the adsorption data. The thermodynamic data indicated that the adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic. Moreover, BAC as a supporter and UiO-66 as the functional part in the ternary composite may have a synergistic effect, which was beneficial for the removal of contaminants. The Fe3O4/BAC/UiO-66 can be simply separated from the water using its strong magnetism after finish adsorption process, which effectively avoids secondary contamination.

Synthesis of hierarchically porous zirconium-based metal-organic framework@silica core-shell stationary phase through etching strategy for liquid chromatography

Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) show promise to be employed as stationary phase for high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), however, the microporous structures of MOFs seriously restrict the diffusion and mass transfer of solute molecules, leading to a low column efficiency. In this paper, the fabrication of hierarchically porous UiO-66@SiO2 (HP- UiO-66@SiO2) core-shell microspheres via H2O2 etching has been proposed as a viable approach to enhance the separation performance of MOFs-based columns for HPLC. Through the direct treatment of the preliminary prepared UiO-66@SiO2 microspheres with H2O2 etching, HP-UiO-66@SiO2 core-shell microspheres were successfully synthesized with an enlarged pore size of up to 9 nm, facilitating efficient mass transfer in chromatographic separation. The prepared HP-UiO-66@SiO2 core-shell microspheres were then explored as stationary phase in HPLC to separate the nonpolar alkyl benzene homologues, the polar aromatic alcohol homologues and the xylene isomers. The results indicated that the baseline separations of these solutes were achieved successfully with narrow peak width and higher resolution than the UiO-66@SiO2 column. The HP-UiO-66@SiO2 column exhibited superior separation performance, reaching a maximum plate number of 134,459/m for fluorene, and showing good reproducibility. As a result, this template-free approach suggests that the fabrication of hierarchically porous MOFs@silica core-shell microspheres is a successful approach to enhance the column efficiency of MOFs-based columns in HPLC.

Effect of Linker Substituent Nature on Performance of Active Sites in UiO-66: Combined FT-IR and DFT Study

The nature of organic linker substituents plays an important role in gas sorption and separation as well as in catalytic applications of metal-organic frameworks. Zirconium-based UiO-66 is one of the most tunable members of this class of materials. However, the prediction of its properties is still not a fully solved problem. Here, the infrared spectroscopic measurements using highly sensitive CO probe molecules, combined with DFT calculations, are used in order to characterize the performance of different acidic sites caused by the presence of different organic linker substituents. The proposed model allowed differentiation between various active sites over the UiO-66 and clarification of their behavior. The experimental IR bands related to CO adsorption can be unambiguously assigned to one type of site or another. The previously undescribed highly red-shifted band is attributed to CO adsorbed on coordinatively unsaturated zirconium sites through an O atom. The results confirm the lower and higher Lewis's acidity of coordinatively unsaturated Zr sites on linker defects in the UiO-66 structure when electron-withdrawing and electron-donating groups are, respectively, included in a terephthalate moiety, whilst the Brønsted acidity of zirconium oxo-cluster remains almost unchanged.

Cu2O/Fe3O4/UiO-66 nanocomposite as an efficient fenton-like catalyst: Performance in organic pollutant degradation and influencing factors based machinelearning

The persistent presence of organic pollutants like dyes in water environment necessitates innovative approaches for efficient degradation. In this research, we developed an advanced hybrid catalyst by combining metal oxides (Cu2O, Fe3O4) with UiO-66, serving as a heterogeneous Fenton catalyst for for efficient RB19 breakdown in water with H2O2. The control factors to the catalytic behavior were also quantified by machine learning. Experimental results show that the catalytic performance was much better than its individual components (P < 0.05 & non-zero 95% C.I). The improved catalytic efficiency was linked to the occurrence of active metal centers (Fe, Cu, and Zr), with Cu(I) from Cu2O playing a crucial role in promoting increased production of HO•. Also, UiO-66 served as a catalyst support, attracting pollutants to the reaction center, while magnetic Fe3O4 aids catalyst recovery. The optimal experimental parameters for best performance were pH at 7, catalyst loading of 1.6 g/L, H2O2 strength of 0.16 M, and reaction temperature of 25 °C. The catalyst can be magnetically separated and regenerated after five recycling times without significantly reducing catalytic activity. The reaction time and pH were ranked as the most influencing factors on catalytic efficiency via Random Forest and SHapley Additive exPlanations models. The findings show that developed catalyst is a suitable candidate to remove dyes in water by Fenton heterogeneous reaction.

Selective adsorption of uranium (VI) from wastewater using a UiO-66/calcium alginate/hydrothermal carbon composite material

Uranium mining, smelting, and nuclear industries generate a considerable amount of wastewater containing uranium. To treat this wastewater effectively and inexpensively, a novel hydrogel material (cUiO-66/CA) was developed by co-immobilizing UiO-66 with calcium alginate and hydrothermal carbon. Batch tests were conducted to determine the optimal adsorption conditions for uranium using cUiO-66/CA, and the adsorption behavior was spontaneous and endothermic, confirming the quasi-second-order dynamics model and the Langmuir model. At a temperature of 308.15 K and pH = 4, the maximum adsorption capacity of uranium was 337.77 mg g^-1. The surface appearance and interior structure of the material were analyzed using SEM, FTIR, XPS, BET, and XRD techniques. The results indicated two possible uranium adsorption processes of cUiO-66/CA: (1) Ca²⁺ and UO₂²⁺ ion exchange process and (2) coordination of uranyl ions with hydroxyl and carboxyl ions to form complexes. cUiO-66/CA exhibited strong selectivity for U (VI) in a multicomponent mixed solution and uranium-containing wastewater, with uranium removal rates of 99.03 % and 81.45 %, respectively. The hydrogel material demonstrated excellent acid resistance, and the uranium adsorption rate exceeded 98 % in the pH range of 3-8. Therefore, this study suggests that cUiO-66/CA has the potential to treat uranium-containing wastewater in a broad pH range.

Core-shell metal-organic framework/silica hybrid with tunable shell structure as stationary phase for high performance liquid chromatography

Metal-organic framework/silica composite (SSU) were prepared by growing UiO-66 on the amino-functionalized SiO2 core-shell spheres (SiO2@dSiO2) via a simple one-pot synthesis approach. By controlling the concentration of Zr4+, the obtained SSU have two different morphologies: spheres-on-sphere and layer-on-sphere. The spheres-on-sphere structure is formed by the aggregation of UiO-66 nanocrystals on the surface of SiO2@dSiO2 spheres. SSU-5 and SSU-20, which contain spheres-on-sphere composites have mesopores with a pore size of about 45 nm in addition to the characteristic micropores of UiO-66 with a pore size of 1 nm. In addition, UiO-66 nanocrystals were grown both inside and outside the pores of SiO2@dSiO2, resulting in a 27% loading of UiO-66 in the SSU. The layer-on-sphere is the surface of SiO2@dSiO2 covered with a layer of UiO-66 nanocrystals. SSU with this structure has only a characteristic pore size of about 1 nm belonging to UiO-66 and is therefore not suitable as a packed stationary phase for high performance liquid chromatography. The SSU spheres were packed into columns and tested for the separation of xylene isomers, aromatics, biomolecules, acidic and basic analytes. With both micropores and mesopores, SSU with spheres-on-sphere structure achieved baseline separation of both small and large molecules. Efficiencies up to 48,150, 50,452 and 41,318 plates m - 1 were achieved for m-xylene, p-xylene and o-xylene, respectively. The relative standard deviations of the retention times of anilines for run-to-run, day-to-day and column-to-column were all less than 6.1%. The results show that the SSU with spheres-on-sphere structure has great potential for high performance chromatographic separation.

Adsorptive removal of diclofenac sodium from aqueous solution by highly efficient metal organic framework (UiO-66)/multi-walled carbon nanotube composite

In the current study, synthesis and use of a novel adsorbent (composite in nature) are presented for treatment of one of the most commonly found pharmaceutical compound, viz, diclofenac sodium (DCF) in waste water. Synthesis of the composite adsorbent was done by hydrothermal method metal organic framework (MOF) based on Zr metal and multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT). The composite adsorbent is termed as UiO-66/MWCNT. The confirmation of successful synthesis of the adsorbent is done with the help of sophisticated characterization techniques like FTIR, XRD, zeta potential analyser, and SEM. The synthesized composite adsorbent is found to have good adsorption capacity for DCF. The experiments related to the process of adsorption were done in batch mode and the significance of various operating parameters affecting the specific uptake of DCF. Maximum adsorption is observed at 3 pH (acidic condition) when the initial concentration of DCF and adsorbent dose was 30 mg/L and 100 mg/L, respectively. The Langmuir isotherm model best describes the process of adsorption with a maximum adsorption capacity of 256.41 mg/g. Experimental results obtained through the studies conducted related to the kinetics displayed that the process followed pseudo-second order model, and intraparticle studies suggested that diffusion through pores controls the rate. Thermodynamic studies suggest that the adsorption of DCF on UiO-66/MWCNT was completely spontaneous with ΔH = -22.089 kJ/mol. The possible mechanism for the adsorptive removal of DCF through UiO-66/MWCNT as found from this study is electrostatic interaction.

Micro-paper-based analytical device decorated with metal-organic frameworks for the assay of synthetic cannabinoids in oral fluids coupled to ion mobility spectrometry

A new concept of paper-based device has been developed combining the advantages of cellulose supports and the rich surface chemistry of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The composite, named as NH2-UiO-66@paper, has been developed for the isolation of synthetic cannabinoid receptor agonists (SCRAs) in oral fluids, trying to mimic the interactions of those compounds with the human CB1R and CB2R receptors, mainly governed by hydrogen bonding and π-interactions with serine and histidine residues. MOF selection (UiO-66) and functionalization of the ligand (2-aminoterephthalic acid) has been done according to the following criteria: (i) water stability of the selected MOF, and (ii) promoting appropriate interactions with SCRAs due to the MOF nature. NH2-UiO-66@paper composite has been characterized in depth and the results confirmed that the material is stable at the temperature selected for thermal desorption (230 °C). Furthermore, the developed method provided appropriate precision values (RSD < 12%) and a limit of detection as low as 10 ng using ion mobility spectrometry as analytical technique. Lastly, the method has been successfully applied to the isolation of several synthetic cannabinoids from oral fluids. This method claims to be an interesting approach for expanding the combination of MOFs with sustainable support and represents a promising alternative to sophisticated and non-portable systems due to the negligible sample treatment required and the simplicity of the operation, which can be applied with screening purposes.

Process intensification of synthesis of metal organic framework particles assisted by ultrasound irradiation

This study synthesized UiO-66, a typical Zr-Metal Organic Framework (MOF), by using an ultrasound-assisted synthesis method to reduce the synthesis time. This method was short-time ultrasound irradiation at the initial stage of the reaction. As compared with average particle size of conventional solvothermal method (=192 nm), averaged particle size by the ultrasound-assisted synthesis method showed particle sizes that were smaller on average, ranging from 56 to 155 nm. In order to compare the relative reaction rates of the solvothermal method and the ultrasound-assisted synthesis method, the cloudiness of the reaction solution in the reactor was observed with a video camera, and the luminance was calculated from the images obtained by the video camera. It was found that the ultrasound-assisted synthesis method showed a faster increase in luminance and shorter induction time than the solvothermal method. The slope of the luminance increase during the transient period was also found to become increase with the addition of ultrasound, which also affects the growth of particles. Observation of the aliquoted reaction solution confirmed that particle growth was faster in the ultrasound-assisted synthesis method than in the solvothermal method. Numerical simulations were also performed using MATLAB ver. 5.5 to analyze the unique reaction field generated by ultrasound. Bubble radius and temperature inside a cavitation bubble was obtained using the Keller-Miksis equation, which reproduces the motion of a single bubble. The bubble radius expanded and contracted repeatedly according to the ultrasound sound pressure, and eventually collapsed. The temperature at the time of collapse was extremely high, exceeding 17,000 K. It was confirmed that the high-temperature reaction field generated by ultrasound irradiation promoted nucleation, leading to a reduction in particle size and induction time.

In Situ FTIR Spectroscopy for Scanning Accessible Active Sites in Defect-Engineered UiO-66

Three UiO-66 samples were prepared by solvothermal synthesis using the defect engineering approach with benzoic acid as a modulator. They were characterized by different techniques and their acidic properties were assessed by FTIR spectroscopy of adsorbed CO and CD₃CN. All samples evacuated at room temperature contained bridging μ₃-OH groups that interacted with both probe molecules. Evacuation at 250 °C leads to the dehydroxylation and disappearance of the μ₃-OH groups. Modulator-free synthesis resulted in a material with open Zr sites. They were detected by low-temperature CO adsorption on a sample evacuated at 200 °C and by CD₃CN even on a sample evacuated at RT. However, these sites were lacking in the two samples obtained with a modulator. IR and Raman spectra revealed that in these cases, the Zr⁴⁺ defect sites were saturated by benzoates, which prevented their interaction with probe molecules. Finally, the dehydroxylation of all samples produced another kind of bare Zr sites that did not interact with CO but formed complexes with acetonitrile, probably due to structural rearrangement. The results showed that FTIR spectroscopy is a powerful tool for investigating the presence and availability of acid sites in UiO-66, which is crucial for its application in adsorption and catalysis.

NH2-Modified UiO-66: Structural Characteristics and Functional Properties

The development of new functional materials based on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for adsorption and catalytic applications is one of the promising trends of modern materials science. The Zr-based MOFs, specifically UiO-66, are considered as the supports for metallic catalysts for the 5-hydroxymethylfurfural platform molecule reduction into valuable products. The present work focused on the effect of NH₂ modification of UiO-66 on its structure and functional properties. The samples were prepared by a solvothermal method. The structure of the obtained materials was studied by X-ray diffraction, IR spectroscopy, UV-visible spectroscopy, and low-temperature nitrogen adsorption. Basic properties were investigated by HCl and CH₃COOH adsorption, and electrokinetic properties were studied by electrophoretic light scattering. UiO-66-NH₂ samples with different contents of aminoterephthalate linkers were successfully prepared. A gradual decrease in the specific surface area and the fraction of micropores with a diameter of ~0.9 nm was observed with an increase in the aminoterephthalate content. A proportional increase in the total number of basic sites in UiO-66-NH₂ samples was established with an increase in the aminoterephthalate content up to 75%. At the same time, a noticeable decrease in the total number of basic sites and an increase in their strength with higher aminoterephthalate content was observed.

From crystal phase mixture to pure metal-organic frameworks - Tuning pore and structure properties

In this study, a sonochemical route for the preparation of a new Hf-MIL-140A metal-organic framework from a mixture of UiO-66/MIL-140A is presented. The sonochemical synthesis route not only allows the phase-pure MIL-140A structure to be obtained but also induces structural defects in the MIL-140A structure. The synergic effect between the sonochemical irradiation and the presence of a highly acidic environment results in the generation of slit-like defects in the crystal structure, which increases specific surface area and pore volume. The BET-specific surface area in the case of sonochemically derived Zr-MIL-140A reaches 653.3 m2/g, which is 1.5 times higher than that obtained during conventional synthesis. The developed Hf-MIL-140A structure is isostructural to Zr-MIL-140A, which was confirmed by synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction (SR-XRD) and by continuous rotation electron diffraction (cRED) analysis. The obtained MOF materials have high thermal and chemical stability, which makes them promising candidates for applications such as gas adsorption, radioactive waste removal, catalysis, and drug delivery.

Construction of hierarchically porous metal-organic framework HP-UiO-66-30% for sensitive determination of benzoylurea insecticides

Due to widespread application of benzoylurea insecticides (BUs) and its persistence in environment, the effective capture of benzoylurea insecticides residues in environment is an important issue of environmental safety monitoring. To obtain excellent adsorption performance, creating defective structure in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can be employed as the method for adjusting its properties. Zirconium(Ⅳ)-based MOF termed as UiO-66-30% was constructed with 2-aminoterephthalic acid (NH₂-BDC) and terephthalic acid (H₂BDC) as building blocks. After calcination and removal of thermal-sensitive ligand (NH₂-BDC), hierarchically porous UiO-66-30% (HP-UiO-66-30%) with multistage pore structure and good stability was obtained. The unique structure of HP-UiO-66-30% endowed it to achieve instantaneous equilibrium (within 2 min) when it was used as a dispersed solid phase extraction (d-SPE) adsorbent to extract BUs from environmental samples, greatly reducing the operation time. A wide linear range (0.05-200 ng mL^-1), good linearity (R² ≥ 0.9980), low detection limits (0.01-0.03 ng mL^-1) and quantification limits (0.05-0.1 ng mL^-1) were obtained for BUs. In addition, the HP-UiO-66-30% material possessed the good reusability and the adsorption capacity did not change significantly over 16 adsorption-desorption cycles. Finally, the established dispersed solid phase extraction-high performance liquid chromatography-diode array detector (d-SPE-HPLC-DAD) method was successfully applied to determination of BUs residues in environmental soil samples. The results demonstrated that HP-UiO-66-30% was an excellent sorbent for extraction BUs from environmental samples.

Tuning the Dual Active Sites of Functionalized UiO-66 for Selective Adsorption of Yb(III)

The recovery of rare earth elements (REEs) from discharged electronic devices or mineral waste water is highly essential but still facing challenges. In this work, two amino-functionalized carboxyl-UiO-66 (UiO-66-COOH-TETA and UiO-66-(COOH)₂-ED) prepared via the postmodification method were employed as the adsorbents for Yb(III) capture. The experimental results revealed their superior adsorption capacities of 161.5 and 202.6 mg/g, respectively. Meanwhile, their adsorption processes can be described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir model. Effects of initial pH and temperature on adsorptions were systematically evaluated, affording an optimal operating condition (i.e., pH of 5.5-6, T of 65 °C, t of 10 h). Moreover, the fabricated materials exhibited great reusability after five adsorption-regeneration cycles. UiO-66-COOH-TETA demonstrated good separation selectivity for Yb(III) over light REEs (i.e., 3.98 of Yb/Ce, 3.51 of Yb/Nd). Based on the density functional theory calculations and characterization analysis (XPS, Zeta, mapping, and IR), the adsorption mechanisms were mainly attributed to significant electrostatic attraction and strong surface complexation between N and O sites and Yb(III).

Atomically dispersed Ti-O clusters anchored on NH2-UiO-66(Zr) as efficient and deactivation-resistant photocatalyst for abatement of gaseous toluene under visible light

Photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) over MOF-based photocatalysts is considerably impeded by the weak activation of reactant molecules on the catalyst surface and low charge carrier mobility. In this study, we demonstrate that atomically dispersed Ti species anchored on NH₂-UiO-66(Zr) (AUiO-66(Zr/Ti)) exhibit high visible-light-responsive photocatalytic activity toward toluene vapor with an 83 % removal efficiency and 89 % CO₂ selectivity. These results are markedly superior to those reported in the literature. More importantly, AUiO-66(Zr/Ti) exhibited excellent catalytic stability during a prolonged reaction, while its pristine AUiO-66(Zr) counterpart underwent rapid catalytic deactivation after a few hours. The optimized sample, AUiO-66(Zr/Ti)-4h, provided extended visible light absorption and enhanced charge carrier mobility due to ligand-to-linker metal charge transfer. Meanwhile, the defect-rich surface of AUiO-66(Zr/Ti)-4h facilitated the activation of H₂O/toluene molecules into the critical intermediates of hydroxyl, benzoic acid, and maleic anhydride, which were effectively converted under visible light illumination. On the basis of the combined results of the PCO of toluene and material characterization, the structure - activity relationship and the related catalytic mechanism are discussed comprehensively.

Tirapazamine-loaded UiO-66/Cu for ultrasound-mediated promotion of chemodynamic therapy cascade hypoxia-activated anticancer therapy

Chemodynamic therapy (CDT), an emerging oncology treatment, has received considerable attention owing to its high selectivity, less aggressiveness, and endogenous stimulation. However, the complex intra-tumor environment limits the therapeutic effect. In this study, Cu⁺ was directly doped into the structure of the UiO-66 matrix using an in situ one-pot oil bath method. The as-formed UiO-66/Cu possessed a large surface area, making it feasible to modify folic acid (FA) and carry more chemotherapeutic agents like tirapazamine (TPZ), thus forming UiO-66/Cu-FA-TPZ nanoplatforms. For CDT, the nanoplatform catalyzed the cyclic generation of the highly oxidizing hydroxyl radical (·OH) from H₂O₂. Particularly, low-frequency ultrasound enhanced the curative effect. Notably, in a tumor, a severe hypoxic environment and ultrasound can activate more TPZ for safe and efficient chemotherapy, achieving synergistic and hypoxia-activated tumor treatment with a low risk of side effects. Moreover, the nanoplatform exhibits computed tomography imaging functions for combined diagnosis and treatment. Our designed nanoplatform overcomes the dilemma of insufficient efficacy from conventional therapy attributed to a hypoxic environment, expecting to guide the design of future treatment regimens for hypoxic tumors.

Metal-organic frameworks as promising solid-phase sorbents for the isolation of third-generation synthetic cannabinoids in biological samples

In this work, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were used for the first time as solid-phase extraction (SPE) sorbents for the isolation of synthetic cannabinoids (SCs) from oral fluids and subsequently quantified by LC-fluorescence detection (FLD). In this context, different MOF families were synthesized and tested under SPE mode. UiO-66 was the family selected, being the amino functionalized (NH₂-UiO-66) the best candidate in terms of extraction performance. After the method optimization, several analytical parameters of interest were obtained, reaching limits of detection (LODs) as low as 0.6-0.8 μg L^-1 and precision values (expressed as RSD) lower than 10.6%. The developed method was successfully applied to the determination of 8 SCs in different oral fluids at three spiked levels with recoveries between 67 and 114%. This method claims to be a real alternative for screening purposes, being a cost-effective procedure due to the price of the sorbent (<0.5 €/cartridge) and its recyclability (up to 12 uses), among others good features.

Real-Space Imaging of the Molecular Changes in Metal-Organic Frameworks under Electron Irradiation

Electron-induced structural changes influence the characterizations of the local structure of various materials by electron microscope. However, for beam-sensitive materials, it is still challenging to detect such changes by electron microscopy, which may help us quantitatively reveal how electrons interact with materials under electron irradiation. Here, we use an emergent phase contrast technique in electron microscopy to clearly image a metal-organic framework, UiO-66 (Zr), at an ultralow electron dose and dose rate. The effects of both the dose and dose rate on the UiO-66 (Zr) structure are visualized, which induce obvious missing organic linkers. The kinetics of the missing linker based on the radiolysis mechanism are semiquantitatively expressed by the different intensities of the imaged organic linkers. Deformation of the UiO-66 (Zr) lattice after the missing linker is also observed. These observations make it possible to visually investigate the electron-induced chemistry in various beam-sensitive materials and avoid electron damage to them.

Interaction between Single Metal Atoms and UiO-66 Framework Revealed by Low-Dose Imaging

Atomically dispersed metals encapsulated in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted extensive attention in catalysis and energy fields. Amino groups were considered conducive to the formation of single atom catalysts (SACs) due to the strong metal-linker interactions. Here, atomic details of Pt₁@UiO-66 and Pd₁@UiO-66-NH₂ are revealed using low-dose integrated differential phase contrast scanning transmission electron microscopy (iDPC-STEM). Single Pt atoms locate on the benzene ring of p-benzenedicarboxylic acid (BDC) linkers in Pt@UiO-66, while single Pd atoms are adsorbed by the amino groups in Pd@UiO-66-NH₂. However, Pt@UiO-66-NH₂ and Pd@UiO-66 show obvious clusters. Therefore, amino groups do not always favor the formation of SACs, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that a moderate binding strength between metals and MOFs is preferred. These results directly reveal the adsorption sites of single metal atoms in UiO-66 family, paving the way for understanding the interaction between single metal atoms and the MOFs.

Extraction of Gold Based on Ionic Liquid Immobilized in UiO-66: An Efficient and Reusable Way to Avoid IL Loss Caused by Ion Exchange in Solvent Extraction

Ionic liquids (ILs) have received considerable attention as a promising green solvent for extracting metal ions from aqueous solutions. However, the recycling of ILs remains difficult and challenging because of the leaching of ILs, which is caused by the ion exchange extraction mechanism and hydrolysis of ILs in acidic aqueous conditions. In this study, a series of imidazolium-based ILs were confined in a metal-organic framework (MOF) material (UiO-66) to overcome the limitations when used in solvent extraction. The effect of the various anions and cations of the ILs on the adsorption ability of AuCl₄^- was studied, and 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazole tetrafluoroborate ([HMIm]⁺[BF₄]^-@UiO-66) was used for the construction of a stable composite. The adsorption properties and mechanism of [HMIm]⁺[BF₄]^-@UiO-66 for Au(III) adsorption were also studied. The concentrations of tetrafluoroborate ([BF₄]^-) in the aqueous phase after Au(III) adsorption by [HMIm]⁺[BF₄]^-@UiO-66 and liquid-liquid extraction by [HMIm]⁺[BF₄]^- IL were 0.122 mg/L and 18040 mg/L, respectively. The results reveal that Au(III) coordinated with the N-containing functional groups, while [BF₄]^- was effectively confined in UiO-66, instead of undergoing anion exchange in liquid-liquid extraction. Electrostatic interactions and the reduction of Au(III) to Au(0) were also important factors determining the adsorption ability of Au(III). [HMIm]⁺[BF₄]^-@UiO-66 could be easily regenerated and reused for three cycles without any significant drop in the adsorption capacity.

Surface Modification of UiO-66 on Hollow Fibre Membrane for Membrane Distillation

The hydrophobicity of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is critical in enhancing the separation process in membrane distillation. Herein, a new superhydrophobic University of Oslo 66 (UiO-66) MOFs was successfully constructed on the top of alumina hollow fibre (AHF) membrane for desalination purposes. The fabrication methodology of the membrane involved in situ growth of pure crystalline UiO-66 on top of AHF and post-synthetic modification by fluorosilane grafting. The resultant membrane was characterised to study the physicochemical properties of the pristine and modified membrane. A superhydrophobic UiO-66 with a contact angle of 163.6° and high liquid entry pressure was obtained by introducing a highly branched fluorocarbon chain while maintaining its crystallinity. As a result, the modified membrane achieved 14.95 L/m²∙h water flux and 99.9% NaCl rejection with low energy consumption in the direct contact membrane distillation process. Furthermore, the high surface energy contributed by UiO-66 is maximised to produce the maximum number of accessible sites for the grafting process. The synergistic effect of surface hydrophobicity and porous UiO-66 membrane in trapping water vapour shows great potential for desalination application.

Fe3O4 supported UiO-66 (Zr) metal-organic framework for removal of drug contaminants from water: fuzzy logic modeling approach

The increase in production and consumption of pharmaceuticals and personal care products causes environmental problems. In this study, naproxen and clofibric acid adsorption were studied using Fe₃O₄-supported UiO-66 (Zr) metal-organic framework (Mag-UiO-66). The adsorption processes were carried out in batch mode at pH value 3.0. The optimum adsorbent quantities, equilibrium periods, pseudo-first-order (PFO), pseudo-second-order (PSO), and intra-particles diffusion kinetic models were calculated. Non-linear Langmuir, Freundlich, Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R), and Sips isotherm equations were applied to experimental data. Thermodynamic analyses of naproxen and clofibric acid adsorption were also carried out in this study. The Langmuir isotherm q_m values were found as 14.15 mg/g for naproxen at 308 K and 41.87 mg/g for clofibric acid at 298 K. Both of the adsorption processes were exothermic. MISO (multi-input single-output) fuzzy logic models for removal of both naproxen and clofibric acid adsorptions were designed based on the experimental data to estimate the removal uptake values. It is noteworthy that the results obtained through designed fuzzy logic models matched well with the experimental data and the findings of this study emphasize the validity of designed fuzzy logic models.

Efficient Strategy for U(VI) Photoreduction: Simultaneous Construction of U(VI) Confinement Sites and Water Oxidation Sites

Reduction of hexavalent uranium [U(VI)] by the photocatalytic method opens up a novel way to promote the selectivity, kinetics, and capacity during uranium removal, where organic molecules act as the sacrificial agents. However, the addition of sacrificial agents can cause a secondary environmental pollution and increase the cost. Here, a UiO-66-based photocatalyst (denoted as MnO_x/NH₂-UiO-66) simultaneously with efficient U(VI) confinement sites and water oxidation sites was successfully developed, achieving excellent U(VI) removal without sacrificial agents. In MnO_x/NH₂-UiO-66, the amino groups served as efficient U(VI) confinement sites and further decreased the U(VI) reduction potential. Besides, MnO_x nanoparticles separated the photogenerated electron-hole pairs and provided water oxidation sites. The U(VI) confinement sites and water oxidation sites jointly promoted the U(VI) photoreduction performance of MnO_x/NH₂-UiO-66, resulting in the removal ratio of MnO_x/NH₂-UiO-66 for U(VI) achieving 97.8% in 2 h without hole sacrifice agents. This work not only provides an effective UiO-66-based photocatalyst but also offers a strategy for effective U(VI) photoreduction.

Preparation of Functionalized Zr-Based MOFs and MOFs/GO for Efficient Removal of 1,3-Butadiene from Cigarette Smoke

Removal of 1,3-butadiene from cigarette smoke plays an important role in human health and environmental protection. Herein, a series of UiO-66 X% containing different ratios of the -NH₂ group was synthesized via the solvothermal method by using terephthalic acid (H₂BDC) and 2-aminoterephthalic acid (NH₂-BDC) as ligands. Using GO as support, a series of UiO-66-NH₂/GO Y% were prepared by controlling the ratio of UiO-66-NH₂ and GO. The effects of -NH₂ and GO contents on the structure and composition of MOFs were investigated. Finally, the different -NH₂ contents of UiO-66 X% and the different GO contents of UiO-66-NH₂/GO Y% were applied in 1,3-butadiene removal from cigarette smoke. The results showed that UiO-66 X% with the higher contents of -NH₂ showed a higher rate of 1,3-butadiene removal, and UiO-66-NH₂/GO Y% with the GO contents of 5% showed the highest removal rate of about 33.85%, which was 25.54% higher than that of activated carbon. In addition, the saturation capacity of the adsorbent materials for 1,3-butadiene was as high as 210.01-239.54 mg/g, showing great potential in reducing harmful components in cigarette smoke and environmental protection.

A Straightforward Method to Prepare MOF-Based Membranes via Direct Seeding of MOF-Polymer Hybrid Nanoparticles

Metal Organic Frameworks (MOFs) present high surface areas, various pore topology as well as good stabilities. The functionalities and porosity can be tuned by using different linkers with various functional groups and a wide range of linker lengths. These properties make them good candidates in membrane separation applications. In this work, we propose a simple UiO-66 MOF-based membrane fabrication method following two steps. First, the α-alumina tubular membrane support was dip-coated with MOF-polymer hybrid nanoparticles (NPs). These NPs were prepared via one-pot synthesis by adding poly (methacrylic acid)-b-poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMAA-b-PMMA) NPs to the classical acetic acid-modulated UiO-66 or UiO-66-NH₂ synthesis formulation. Second, secondary membrane growth was applied to give rise to a continuous and homogeneous crystalline MOF membrane layer. The gas permeances (He, N₂, CO₂ and SF₆) tests confirmed high membrane permeability with no macro-defects. The as-prepared membranes that were used for dye separation (Rhodamine B) showed relatively good separation capacity.

Low-temperature propane oxidative dehydrogenation over UiO-66 supported vanadia catalysts: Role of support confinement effects

Overoxidation is the principal barrier against commercializing propane oxidative dehydrogenation (PODH) catalysts for propylene production. The current approach to reducing overoxidation, i.e., coating the non-selective support surface with a monolayer of active phase, can itself increase the probability of overoxidation of the produced propylene due to polymerization of active phase species. Incorporating the "confinement agents" onto the metal oxide support might be considered as an alternative solution to prevent hydrocarbons from reaching the support and overoxidizing. Herein, the UiO-66 metal-organic framework, which contains numerous organic ligands connected to the zirconia nodes, was used as support for the vanadia active phase to highlight the role of support's confinement effects on the overall catalytic performance toward the PODH. The UiO-66 supported vanadia catalysts with various vanadium loadings were fabricated via an ultrasonic-assisted wet impregnation procedure. The catalytic function is related to the underlying chemical processes at catalyst surfaces using physicochemical characterization techniques, PODH performance measurements, and machine learning tools. The results showed that the catalyst with a relatively low vanadia density of 2.7 nm-2, equivalent to less than half of the entire support surface coverage, could achieve propylene productivity of 4.43 [Formula: see text] , propane conversion of 17.1%, and propylene selectivity of 49.7% at 350 °C.

Hydrolytically stable mixed ditopic linker based zirconium metal organic framework as a robust photocatalyst towards Tetracycline Hydrochloride degradation and hydrogen evolution

In the existing eco-crisis, designing and engineering an efficient as well as water stable photocatalyst for energy conversion and pollutant abatement remains crucial. In this regard, a mixed linker type zirconium metal organic framework (Zr-MOF) with terepthalic acid based ditopic linkers were utilized to design a single component photocatalyst through single step solvothermal method to utilize photons from visible light illumination towards hydrogen energy (H2) production and Tetracycline Hydrochloride (TCH) degradation. The one pot synthesized mixed linker based Zr-MOF displays visible light absorption through band gap tuning, superior exciton segregation and oxygen vacancy that cumulatively supports the enhancement in the photocatalytic output with respect to their pristine counterparts. Additionally, the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, optical and electrochemical studies strongly reinforces the above claims. The prepared mixed linker Zr-MOF showed superior photocatalytic H2 evolution performance of 247.88 µmol h-1 (apparent conversion efficiency; ACE = 1.9%) that is twice than its pristine Zr-MOFs. Moreover, in TCH degradation, the mixed linker MOF displays an enhanced efficacy of 91.8 % and adopts pseudo-first order type kinetics with a rate constant value of 0.032. Typically, the active species participating for the TCH photo-degradation follows the order of hydroxyl (OH.) < superoxide (O2.-) radicals. Consequently, the mixed linker Zr-MOF could be effectively used as a robust photocatalyst exhibiting boosted TCH degradation and H2 production.

Real-Space Imaging of the Node-Linker Coordination on the Interfaces between Self-Assembled Metal-Organic Frameworks

Surface and interface, with unique local characteristics different from bulk structure, are of great significance in various applications of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which should be studied by real-space imaging methods, such as electron microscopy. However, it is still challenging to atomically resolve these local structures in MOFs, because they are even more sensitive to electron irradiation. Here, we use integrated differential phase contrast scanning transmission electron microscopy (iDPC-STEM) to achieve the atomic imaging of both the metal nodes and organic linkers in UiO-66 (Zr) nanocrystals and their assembly. After adding acetic acid, we modulate the whole process of MOF assembly and observe the organic linkers at both the surfaces and twin interfaces in the chemically assembled UiO-66 (Zr) crystals by the iDPC-STEM. These results bring us a deeper understanding on the role of acid modulators that promote the MOF assembly by generating the missing-linker defects on the crystal surface.
