Strongly Coupled 2D Transition Metal Chalcogenide-MXene-Carbonaceous Nanoribbon Heterostructures with Ultrafast Ion Transport for Boosting Sodium/Potassium Ions Storage

Towards metal selenides: a promising anode for sodium-ion batteries

Metal selenides have garnered significant attention as promising anode materials for sodium-ion batteries, thanks to their high theoretical capacity, excellent conductivity, and natural abundance. However, their potential is hampered by disappointing capacity retention and unsatisfactory lifespan, primarily attributed to volume expansion and unwanted structural collapse resulting from the insertion and extraction of relatively large Na+ ions during the charge and discharge processes. This feature article provides a brief overview of our endeavors to address the challenges associated with metal selenide-based anode materials, aiming to achieve high-performance electrode materials for sodium-ion batteries. Our strategy encompasses nanostructure design, materials composite engineering, heteroatoms doping, and topography and interface engineering. Additionally, future research directions are also outlined.

Ti─O─C Bonding at 2D Heterointerfaces of 3D Composites for Fast Sodium Ion Storage at High Mass Loading Level

3D composite electrodes have shown extraordinary promise as high mass loading electrode materials for sodium ion batteries (SIBs). However, they usually show poor rate performance due to the sluggish Na+ kinetics at the heterointerfaces of the composites. Here, a 3D MXene-reduced holey graphene oxide (MXene-RHGO) composite electrode with Ti─O─C bonding at 2D heterointerfaces of MXene and RHGO is developed. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal the built-in electric fields (BIEFs) are enhanced by the formation of bridged interfacial Ti─O─C bonding, that lead to not only faster diffusion of Na+ at the heterointerfaces but also faster adsorption and migration of Na+ on the MXene surfaces. As a result, the 3D composite electrodes show impressive properties for fast Na+ storage. Under high current density of 10 mA cm-2, the 3D MXene-RHGO composite electrodes with high mass loading of 10 mg cm-2 achieve a strikingly high and stable areal capacity of 3 mAh cm-2, which is same as commercial LIBs and greatly exceeds that of most reported SIBs electrode materials. The work shows that rationally designed bonding at the heterointerfaces represents an effective strategy for promoting high mass loading 3D composites electrode materials forward toward practical SIBs applications.

Transition Metal Selenide-Based Anodes for Advanced Sodium-Ion Batteries: Electronic Structure Manipulation and Heterojunction Construction Aspect

In recent years, sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have gained a foothold in specific applications related to lithium-ion batteries, thanks to continuous breakthroughs and innovations in materials by researchers. Commercial graphite anodes suffer from small interlayer spacing (0.334 nm), limited specific capacity (200 mAh g-1), and low discharge voltage (<0.1 V), making them inefficient for high-performance operation in SIBs. Hence, the current research focus is on seeking negative electrode materials that are compatible with the operation of SIBs. Many studies have been reported on the modification of transition metal selenides as anodes in SIBs, mainly targeting the issue of poor cycling life attributed to the volume expansion of the material during sodium-ion extraction and insertion processes. However, the intrinsic electronic structure of transition metal selenides also influences electron transport and sodium-ion diffusion. Therefore, modulating their electronic structure can fundamentally improve the electron affinity of transition metal selenides, thereby enhancing their rate performance in SIBs. This work provides a comprehensive review of recent strategies focusing on the modulation of electronic structures and the construction of heterogeneous structures for transition metal selenides. These strategies effectively enhance their performance metrics as electrodes in SIBs, including fast charging, stability, and first-cycle coulombic efficiency, thereby facilitating the development of high-performance SIBs.

Tuning Na-Ion Diffusion in MXene/Graphene Oxide Heterostructures: An Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics Study

The development of heterostructured anode materials provides an effective approach for enhancing the electrochemical performance of sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). In this work, ab initio molecular dynamics simulations and first-principles calculations are employed to investigate the Na-ion intercalation and diffusion in MXene/graphene oxide heterostructures. The influence of graphene oxidation on interlayer spacing, Na-ion diffusion kinetics, and transport mechanisms is examined at an atomic scale. It has been observed that oxygen functional groups can increase the interspacing between adjacent layers, thereby improving the initial embedding of Na ions. However, overoxidation causes an obstructive effect on the ionic conduction channels. An appropriate oxidation degree enables optimal Na-ion migration kinetics while retaining structural integrity. Our simulation results provide crucial insights into the rational design of high-performance MXene-based anodes for SIBs with excellent capacity and cycling stability.

Advanced Insights on MXenes: Categories, Properties, Synthesis, and Applications in Alkali Metal Ion Batteries

The development and optimization of promising anode material for next-generation alkali metal ion batteries are significant for clean energy evolution. 2D MXenes have drawn extensive attention in electrochemical energy storage applications, due to their multiple advantages including excellent conductivity, robust mechanical properties, hydrophilicity of its functional terminations, and outstanding electrochemical storage capability. In this review, the categories, properties, and synthesis methods of MXenes are first outlined. Furthermore, the latest research and progress of MXenes and their composites in alkali metal ion storage are also summarized comprehensively. A special emphasis is placed on MXenes and their hybrids, ranging from material design and fabrication to fundamental understanding of the alkali ion storage mechanisms to battery performance optimization strategies. Lastly, the challenges and personal perspectives of the future research of MXenes and their composites for energy storage are presented.

Interfacial-Confined Isochronous Conversion to Biphasic Selenide Heterostructure with Enhanced Adsorption Behaviors for Robust High-Rate Na-Ion Storage

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have gradually become one of the most promising energy storage techniques in the current era of post-lithium-ion batteries. For anodes, transitional metal selenides (TMSe) based materials are welcomed choices , owing to relatively higher specific capacities and enriched redox active sites. Nevertheless, current bottlenecks are blamed for their poor intrinsic electronic conductivities, and uncontrollable volume expansion during redox reactions. Given that, an interfacial-confined isochronous conversion strategy is proposed, to prepare orthorhombic/cubic biphasic TMSe heterostructure, namely CuSe/Cu3 VSe4 , through using MXene as the precursor, followed by Cu/Se dual anchorage. As-designed biphasic TMSe heterostructure endows unique hierarchical structure, which contains adequate insertion sites and diffusion spacing for Na ions, besides, the surficial pseudocapacitive storage behaviors can be also proceeded like 2D MXene. By further investigation on electronic structure, the theoretical calculations indicate that biphasic CuSe/Cu3 VSe4 anode exhibits well-enhanced properties, with smaller bandgap and thus greatly improves intrinsic poor conductivities. In addition, the dual redox centers can enhance the electrochemical Na ions storage abilities. As a result, the as-designed biphasic TMSe anode can deliver a reversible specific capacity of 576.8 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 , favorable Na affinity, and reduced diffusion barriers. This work discloses a synchronous solution toward demerits in conductivities and lifespan, which is inspiring for TMSe-based anode development in SIBs systems.

2D MXenes and their composites; design, synthesis, and environmental sensing applications

Novel 2D layered MXene materials were first reported in 2011 at Drexel University. MXenes are widely used in multidisciplinary applications due to their anomalous electrical conductivity, high surface area, and chemical, mechanical, and physical properties. This review summarises MXene synthesis and applications in environmental sensing. The first section describes different methods for MXene synthesis, including fluorinated and non-fluorinated methods. MXene's layered structure, surface terminal groups, and the space between layers significantly impact its properties. Different methods to separate different MXene layers are also discussed using various intercalation reagents and commercially synthesized MXene without compromising the environment. This review also explains the effect of MXene's surface functionalization on its characteristics. The second section of the review describes gas and pesticide sensing applications of Mxenes and its composites. Its good conductivity, surface functionalization with negatively charged groups, intrinsic chemical nature, and good mechanical stability make it a prominent material for room temperature sensing of environmental samples, such as polar and nonpolar gases, volatile organic compounds, and pesticides. This review will enhance the young scientists' knowledge of MXene-based materials and stimulate their diversity and hybrid conformation in environmental sensing applications.

Ultralong Stability of Ti3 C2 Tx -MXene Dispersion Through Synergistic Regulation of Storage Environment and Defect Capping with Tris-HCl Buffering

Aqueous MXene dispersion suffers from a bottleneck issue of oxidation, leading to its gradual deterioration and ultimately compromised physicochemical characteristics. Herein, Tris-HCl buffer is employed to stabilize the diluted Ti3 C2 Tx -MXene dispersion (0.05 mg mL-1 ) through the synergy of its potent pH-regulation capability and capping effect toward oxidation-susceptible defects/edges. Tris-HCl functionalized Ti3 C2 Tx maintained its original morphology, structure, and favorable dispersity even after 150 days of aging under naturally aerated conditions. The pH-regulation nature of Tris-HCl is elucidated through solution monitoring of Ti3 C2 Tx dispersion, while the adsorption of Tris-HCl onto defects/edges is revealed by spectral analysis and multi-scale simulations. Tris-HCl at the neutral pH can bind to the negatively charged basal plane of Ti3 C2 Tx via + HTris moiety, while the other moiety (Tris) interacts with the exposed edge-based Ti atoms and/or intrinsic defects, forming a Ti─N bond that prevents MXene from attack by H2 O and O2 . Besides, Tris-HCl stabilized Ti3 C2 Tx exhibited nearly identical capacitive characteristics to its freshly-etched counterpart, indicating the minimal impact of Tris-HCl on electrochemical performance of Ti3 C2 Tx during long-term storage. This study provides practical guidance for stabilizing MXene in their native aqueous dispersion without compromising the inherent properties.

One-Step Fabrication of Integrated Graphene/Polypyrrole/Carbon Cloth Films for Supercapacitor Electrodes

The facile and cost-effective preparation of supercapacitor electrodes is significant for the application of this kind of electrochemical energy-storing module. In this work, we designed a feasible strategy to fabricate a binary active material onto a current collector in one step. A colloidal mixture of graphene oxide and pyrrole layered on a carbon cloth could undergo a redox reaction through a mild hydrothermal process to yield a reduced graphene oxide/polypyrrole hydrogel film anchored onto the carbon cloth. The integrated electrode with the porous graphene/polypyrrole active material could be directly utilized as a freestanding working electrode for electrochemical measurements and the assembly of supercapacitor devices. The as-prepared electrode could achieve a high capacitance of 1221 mF cm-2 at 1 mA cm-2 (531 F g-1) with satisfactory cycling stability. The constructed symmetric supercapacitor with two optimal electrodes could provide an energy density of 70.4 μWh cm-2 (15.3 Wh kg-1). This work offers a feasible pathway toward the integration of graphene/conducting polymer composites as electrochemical electrodes.

Highly Aligned Ternary Nanofiber Matrices Loaded with MXene Expedite Regeneration of Volumetric Muscle Loss

Current therapeutic approaches for volumetric muscle loss (VML) face challenges due to limited graft availability and insufficient bioactivities. To overcome these limitations, tissue-engineered scaffolds have emerged as a promising alternative. In this study, we developed aligned ternary nanofibrous matrices comprised of poly(lactide-co-ε-caprolactone) integrated with collagen and Ti3C2Tx MXene nanoparticles (NPs) (PCM matrices), and explored their myogenic potential for skeletal muscle tissue regeneration. The PCM matrices demonstrated favorable physicochemical properties, including structural uniformity, alignment, microporosity, and hydrophilicity. In vitro assays revealed that the PCM matrices promoted cellular behaviors and myogenic differentiation of C2C12 myoblasts. Moreover, in vivo experiments demonstrated enhanced muscle remodeling and recovery in mice treated with PCM matrices following VML injury. Mechanistic insights from next-generation sequencing revealed that MXene NPs facilitated protein and ion availability within PCM matrices, leading to elevated intracellular Ca2+ levels in myoblasts through the activation of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and serum/glucocorticoid regulated kinase 1 (SGK1), ultimately promoting myogenic differentiation via the mTOR-AKT pathway. Additionally, upregulated iNOS and increased NO- contributed to myoblast proliferation and fiber fusion, thereby facilitating overall myoblast maturation. These findings underscore the potential of MXene NPs loaded within highly aligned matrices as therapeutic agents to promote skeletal muscle tissue recovery.

Layered Potassium Titanium Niobate/Reduced Graphene Oxide Nanocomposite as a Potassium-Ion Battery Anode

With graphite currently leading as the most viable anode for potassium-ion batteries (KIBs), other materials have been left relatively under-examined. Transition metal oxides are among these, with many positive attributes such as synthetic maturity, long-term cycling stability and fast redox kinetics. Therefore, to address this research deficiency we report herein a layered potassium titanium niobate KTiNbO5 (KTNO) and its rGO nanocomposite (KTNO/rGO) synthesised via solvothermal methods as a high-performance anode for KIBs. Through effective distribution across the electrically conductive rGO, the electrochemical performance of the KTNO nanoparticles was enhanced. The potassium storage performance of the KTNO/rGO was demonstrated by its first charge capacity of 128.1 mAh g-1 and reversible capacity of 97.5 mAh g-1 after 500 cycles at 20 mA g-1, retaining 76.1% of the initial capacity, with an exceptional rate performance of 54.2 mAh g-1 at 1 A g-1. Furthermore, to investigate the attributes of KTNO in-situ XRD was performed, indicating a low-strain material. Ex-situ X-ray photoelectron spectra further investigated the mechanism of charge storage, with the titanium showing greater redox reversibility than the niobium. This work suggests this low-strain nature is a highly advantageous property and well worth regarding KTNO as a promising anode for future high-performance KIBs.

Manipulating Molecular Structure to Trigger Ultrafast and Long-Life Potassium Storage of Fe0.4 Ni0.6 S Solid Solution

Currently, the main obstacle to the widespread utilization of metal chalcogenides (MSx ) as anode for potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) is their poor rate capability and inferior cycling stability as a result of the undesirable electrical conductivity and severe pulverization of the nanostructure during large K-ions intercalation-extraction processes. Herein, an ultrafast and long-life potassium storage of metal chalcogenide is rationally demonstrated by employing Fe0.4 Ni0.6 S solid-solution (FNS/C) through molecular structure engineering. Benefiting from improved electroactivity and intense interactions within the unique solid solution phase, the electrical conductivity and structure durability of Fe0.4 Ni0.6 S are vastly improved. As anticipated, the FNS/C electrode delivers superior rate properties (538.7 and 210.5 mAh g-1 at 0.1 and 10 A g-1 , respectively) and long-term cycle stability (180.8 mAh g-1 at 5 A g-1 after 2000 cycles with a capacity decay of 0.011% per cycle). Moreover, the potassium storage mechanisms of Fe0.4 Ni0.6 S solid solution are comprehensively revealed by several in situ characterizations and theoretical calculations. This innovative molecular structure engineering strategy opens avenues to achieve high-quality metal chalcogenides for future advanced PIBs.

Review of Design Routines of MXene Materials for Magnesium-Ion Energy Storage Device

Renewable energy storage using electrochemical storage devices is extensively used in various field applications. High-power density supercapacitors and high-energy density rechargeable batteries are some of the most effective devices, while lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are the most common. Due to the scarcity of Li resources and serious safety concerns during the construction of LIBs, development of safer and cheaper technologies with high performance is warranted. Magnesium is one of the most abundant and replaceable elements on earth, and it is safe as it does not generate dendrite following cycling. However, the lack of suitable electrode materials remains a critical issue in developing electrochemical energy storage devices. 2D MXenes can be used to construct composites with different dimensions, owing to their suitable physicochemical properties and unique magnesium-ion adsorption structure. In this study, the construction strategies of MXene in different dimensions, including its physicochemical properties as an electrode material in magnesium ion energy storage devices are reviewed. Research advancements of MXene and MXene-based composites in various kinds of magnesium-ion storage devices are also analyzed to understand its energy storage mechanisms. Finally, current opportunities, challenges, and future prospects are also briefly discussed to provide crucial information for future research.

MXene Derivatives for Energy Storage and Conversions

Associated with the rapid development of 2D transition metal carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides (MXenes), MXene derivatives have been recently exploited and exhibited unique physical/chemical properties, holding promising applications in the areas of energy storage and conversions. This review provides a comprehensive summarization of the latest research and progress on MXene derivatives, including termination-tailored MXenes, single-atom implanted MXenes, intercalated MXenes, van der Waals atomic layers, and non-van der Waals heterostructures. The intrinsic relationship between structure, properties, and corresponding applications for MXene derivatives are then emphasized. Finally, the essential challenges are addressed and perspectives for the MXene derivatives are also discussed.

Firmly interlocked Janus-type metallic Ni3Sn2S2-carbon nanotube heterostructure suppresses polysulfide dissolution and Sn aggregation

Ternary transition-metal tin chalcogenides, with their diverse compositions, abundant constituents, high theoretical capacities, acceptable working potentials, excellent conductivities, and synergistic active/inactive multi-components, hold promise as anode materials for metal-ion batteries. However, abnormal aggregation of Sn nanocrystals and the shuttling of intermediate polysulfides during electrochemical tests detrimentally affect the reversibility of redox reactions and lead to rapid capacity fading within a limited number of cycles. In this study, we present the development of a robust Janus-type metallic Ni₃Sn₂S₂-carbon nanotube (NSSC) heterostructured anode for Li-ion batteries (LIBs). The synergistic effects of Ni₃Sn₂S₂ nanoparticles and a carbon network successfully generate abundant heterointerfaces with steady chemical bridges, thereby enhancing ion and electron transport, preventing the aggregation of Ni and Sn nanoparticles, mitigating the oxidation and shuttling of polysulfides, facilitating the reforming of Ni₃Sn₂S₂ nanocrystals during delithiation, creating a uniform solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer, protecting the mechanical integrity of electrode materials, and ultimately enabling highly reversible lithium storage. Consequently, the NSSC hybrid exhibits an excellent initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE > 83 %) and superb cyclic performance (1218 mAh/g after 500 cycles at 0.2 A/g and 752 mAh/g after 1050 cycles at 1 A/g). This research provides practical solutions for the intrinsic challenges associated with multi-component alloying and conversion-type electrode materials in next-generation metal-ion batteries.

All-solid-state Ti3C2Tx neutral symmetric fiber supercapacitors with high energy density and wide temperature range

All-solid-state Ti₃C₂T_x neutral symmetric fiber supercapacitors (PVA EGHG Ti₃C₂T_x FSCs) with high energy density and wide temperature range are constructed by using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-ethylene glycol hydrogel (EGHG)-sodium perchlorate (NaClO₄) as electrolyte and separator, and Ti₃C₂T_x fiber as electrodes. Ti₃C₂T_x fiber is prepared using 130 mg mL^-1 Ti₃C₂T_x nanosheet ink as an assembly unit in a coagulation bath of isopropyl alcohol (IPA) and distilled water with 5 wt% CaCl₂ by a wet spinning method. The prepared Ti₃C₂T_x fiber exhibits a specific capacity of 385 F cm^-3 and a capacitance retention of 94 % after 10,000 cycles in 1 M NaClO₄ electrolyte. The assembled PVA EGHG Ti₃C₂T_x FSCs deliver a specific capacitance of 41 F cm^-3, a volumetric energy density of 5 mWh cm^-3, and a capacitance retention of 92 % after 500 times continuous bending. Furthermore, it shows good flexibility and excellent capacitance over a wide temperature range of -40 to 40 °C and maintains its electrochemical performance under varying degrees of bending. This study provides a viable strategy for designing and assembling all-solid-state neutral symmetric fiber supercapacitors with high energy density and wide temperature range.

Recent Advances and Perspectives of Lewis Acidic Etching Route: An Emerging Preparation Strategy for MXenes

Since the discovery in 2011, MXenes have become the rising star in the field of two-dimensional materials. Benefiting from the metallic-level conductivity, large and adjustable gallery spacing, low ion diffusion barrier, rich surface chemistry, superior mechanical strength, MXenes exhibit great application prospects in energy storage and conversion, sensors, optoelectronics, electromagnetic interference shielding and biomedicine. Nevertheless, two issues seriously deteriorate the further development of MXenes. One is the high experimental risk of common preparation methods such as HF etching, and the other is the difficulty in obtaining MXenes with controllable surface groups. Recently, Lewis acidic etching, as a brand-new preparation strategy for MXenes, has attracted intensive attention due to its high safety and the ability to endow MXenes with uniform terminations. However, a comprehensive review of Lewis acidic etching method has not been reported yet. Herein, we first introduce the Lewis acidic etching from the following four aspects: etching mechanism, terminations regulation, in-situ formed metals and delamination of multi-layered MXenes. Further, the applications of MXenes and MXene-based hybrids obtained by Lewis acidic etching route in energy storage and conversion, sensors and microwave absorption are carefully summarized. Finally, some challenges and opportunities of Lewis acidic etching strategy are also presented.

Emerging 2D Copper-Based Materials for Energy Storage and Conversion: A Review and Perspective

2D materials have shown great potential as electrode materials that determine the performance of a range of electrochemical energy technologies. Among these, 2D copper-based materials, such as Cu-O, Cu-S, Cu-Se, Cu-N, and Cu-P, have attracted tremendous research interest, because of the combination of remarkable properties, such as low cost, excellent chemical stability, facile fabrication, and significant electrochemical properties. Herein, the recent advances in the emerging 2D copper-based materials are summarized. A brief summary of the crystal structures and synthetic methods is started, and innovative strategies for improving electrochemical performances of 2D copper-based materials are described in detail through defect engineering, heterostructure construction, and surface functionalization. Furthermore, their state-of-the-art applications in electrochemical energy storage including supercapacitors (SCs), alkali (Li, Na, and K)-ion batteries, multivalent metal (Mg and Al)-ion batteries, and hybrid Mg/Li-ion batteries are described. In addition, the electrocatalysis applications of 2D copper-based materials in metal-air batteries, water-splitting, and CO₂ reduction reaction (CO₂ RR) are also discussed. This review also discusses the charge storage mechanisms of 2D copper-based materials by various advanced characterization techniques. The review with a perspective of the current challenges and research outlook of such 2D copper-based materials for high-performance energy storage and conversion applications is concluded.

Biotechnological advancements towards water, food and medical healthcare: A review

The global health status is highly affected by the growing pace of urbanization, new lifestyles, climate changes, and resource exploitation. Modern technologies pave a promising way to deal with severe concerns toward sustainable development. Herein, we provided a comprehensive review of some popular biotechnological advancements regarding the progress achieved in water, food, and medicine, as the most substantial fields related to public health. The emergence of novel organic/inorganic materials has brought about significant improvement in conventional water treatment techniques, anti-fouling approaches, anti-microbial agents, food processing, biosensors, drug delivery systems, and implants. Particularly, a growing interest has been devoted to nanomaterials and their application for developing novel structures or improving the characteristics of standard components. Also, bioinspired materials have been widely used to improve the performance, efficiency, accuracy, stability, safety, and cost-effectiveness of traditional systems. On the other side, the fabrication of innovative devices for precisely monitoring and managing various ecosystem and human health issues is of great importance. Above all, exceptional advancements in designing ion-selective electrodes (ISEs), microelectromechanical systems (MEMs), and implantable medical devices have altered the future landscape of environmental and biomedical research. This review paper aimed to shed light on the wide-ranging materials and devices that have been developed for health applications and mainly focused on the impact of nanotechnology in this field.

Metal Selenides Anode Materials for Sodium Ion Batteries: Synthesis, Modification, and Application

The powerful and rapid development of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) in secondary batteries field makes lithium resources in short supply, leading to rising battery costs. Under the circumstances, sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) with low cost, inexhaustible sodium reserves, and analogous work principle to LIBs, have evolved as one of the most anticipated candidates for large-scale energy storage devices. Thereinto, the applicable electrode is a core element for the smooth development of SIBs. Among various anode materials, metal selenides (MSe_x ) with relatively high theoretical capacity and unique structures have aroused extensive interest. Regrettably, MSe_x suffers from large volume expansion and unwished side reactions, which result in poor electrochemistry performance. Thus, strategies such as carbon modification, structural design, voltage control as well as electrolyte and binder optimization are adopted to alleviate these issues. In this review, the synthesis methods and main reaction mechanisms of MSe_x are systematically summarized. Meanwhile, the major challenges of MSe_x and the corresponding available strategies are proposed. Furthermore, the recent research progress on layered and nonlayered MSe_x for application in SIBs is presented and discussed in detail. Finally, the future development focuses of MSe_x in the field of rechargeable ion batteries are highlighted.

A Novel Hierarchical Structure of SnCu2Se4/d-Ti3C2Tx/NPC for a Lithium/Sodium Ion Battery and Hybrid Capacitor with Long-Term Cycling Stabilities

To alleviate kinetics imbalance and capacity insufficiency simultaneously, a novel hierarchical structure (SnCu₂Se₄/d-Ti₃C₂T_x/NPC) composed of delaminated Ti₃C₂T_x, SnCu₂Se₄ nanoparticles, and N-doped porous carbon layers is designed as a battery-type anode for lithium/sodium ion hybrid capacitor (LIC/SIC). The combination of SnCu₂Se₄ nanoparticles with high specific capacity, d-Ti₃C₂T_x with accelerated ion diffusion path, and NPC with enhanced electronic conductivity makes the SnCu₂Se₄/d-Ti₃C₂T_x/NPC composite possess excellent cycling stabilities in half-cell lithium-ion and sodium-ion batteries (LIB and SIB), with capacities of 114 mAh g^-1 after 6000 cycles at 10 A g^-1 for LIB and 296 mAh g^-1 after 900 cycles at 1.0 A g^-1 for SIB. The rate performance is also outstanding, with recovered capacity of 738 mAh g^-1 at 0.1 A g^-1 after cycles at current densities up to 50 A g^-1 for LIB. Subsequently, LIC and SIC based on the SnCu₂Se₄/d-Ti₃C₂T_x/NPC anode and activated carbon cathode exhibit high energy densities of 147.9 and 158.6 Wh kg^-1 at a power density of 100 W kg^-1, respectively. They also possess distinctive long lifespans with capacity retentions of 78 and 81% after 10,000 cycles at 1.0 A g^-1, respectively, demonstrating the feasibility of SnCu₂Se₄/d-Ti₃C₂T_x/NPC toward energy devices requiring high energy density, power density, and long-term stability.

Fabrication Strategy of MXenes through Ionic-Liquid-Based Microemulsions toward Supercapacitor Electrodes

With rapid development and broad application of MXenes, it is important to dedicate efforts to explore the preparation of MXenes from MAX phases, owing to the strict policies of energy conservation and environmental protection. Therefore, a new synthesis strategy for MXenes through ionic-liquid-based microemulsions was proposed successfully for the first time here. Because of the unique interface reaction feature of microemulsions, it could improve the etching conditions of MAX phases, thereby enhancing the reaction efficiency. Effects of the temperature, acid, and ionic liquid species on the etching reaction were investigated in detail. MXenes were prepared successfully within 24 h through 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate- or 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate-based microemuslions at a temperature of 30 °C and pH of 0.3. MXenes with or without annealed treatment were used to make supercapacitor electrodes for evaluating their electrochemical performances. In comparison to unannealed MXenes, the specific capacitance of annealed MXenes was higher, owing to the lower resistance. The optimal MXenes exhibited a specific capacitance of 46.5 F/g at a current density of 40 mA/g and high stability after 500 charge/discharge cycles (100 mA/g), which is comparable to other reports. Through this work, it can open a new window for the preparation of MXenes, which helps to further promote their development and application in research of electrode materials.

Constructing a multidimensional porous structure of K/Co co-substituted Na3V2(PO4)3/C attached on the lamellar Ti3C2Tx MXene substrate for superior sodium storage property

Na₃V₂(PO₄)₃ (NVP) materials have emerged as prospective cathodes for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). However, its weak intrinsic conductivity has limited deeper research. Herein, we adopt the strategy of simultaneous K/Co co-substitution and Ti₃C₂T_x MXene (MX) introduction to optimize NVP. The K/Co co-substitution brings about the synergetic effect of NVP framework stabilization. Doping Co²⁺ generates beneficial holes and accelerating electronic conductivity. The MX plates are stacked at random to form a porous construction, increasing the contact areas to provide more active sites for Na⁺ shuttling and buffering the volume change. Furthermore, the lamellar MX and the carbon layers form efficient conductive networks that increase electron migration. Notably, K_0.1Na_2.95V_1.95Co_0.05(PO₄)₃@MX (KC05@MX) exhibited an initial capacity of 116 mA h g^-1 under 1 C with an extraordinary retention of 86.8% at the 400^th cycle. It realized high performance under 20 C and 50 C, and the outputs were 93.5 and 82.4 mA h g^-1 at the 1^st cycle and 66.6 and 53.4 mA h g^-1 at the 1000^th cycle, respectively, with slight capacity loss at 0.028% and 0.035%. Furthermore, the Bi₂Se₃//KC05@MX asymmetric full cell expressed great electrochemical properties, indicating the superior practical application prospect of KC05@MX.

Hierarchical MXene/transition metal oxide heterostructures for rechargeable batteries, capacitors, and capacitive deionization

2D MXenes have attracted considerable attention due to their high electronic conductivity, tunable metal compositions, functional termination groups, low ion diffusion barriers, and abundant active sites. However, MXenes suffer from sheet stacking and partial surface oxidation, limiting their energy storage and water treatment development. To solve these problems and enhance the performance of MXenes in practical applications, various hierarchical MXene/transition metal oxide (MXene/TMO) heterostructures are rationally designed and constructed. The hierarchical MXene/TMO heterostructures can not only prevent the stacking of MXene sheets and improve the electronic conductivity and buffer the volume change of TMOs during the electrochemical reaction process. The synergistic effect of conductive MXenes and active TMOs also makes MXene/TMO heterostructures promising electrode materials for energy storage and seawater desalination. This review mainly introduces and discusses the recent research progress in MXene/TMO heterostructures, focusing on their synthetic strategies, heterointerface engineering, and applications in rechargeable batteries, capacitors, and capacitive deionization (CDI). Finally, the key challenges and prospects for the future development of the MXene/TMO heterostructures in rechargeable batteries, capacitors, and CDI are proposed.

Electron-Injection and Atomic-Interface Engineering toward Stabilized Defected 1T-Rich MoS2 as High Rate Anode for Sodium Storage

1T-phase MoS₂ is a promising electrode material for electrochemical energy storage due to its metallic conductivity, abundant active sites, and high theoretical capacity. However, because of the habitual conversion of metastable 1T to stable 2H phase via restacking, the poor rate capacity and cycling stability at high current densities hamper their applications. Herein, a synergetic effect of electron-injection engineering and atomic-interface engineering is employed for the formation and stabilization of defected 1T-rich MoS₂ nanoflowers. The 1T-rich MoS₂ and carbon monolayers are alternately intercalated with each other in the nanohybrids. The metallic 1T-phase MoS₂ and conductive carbon monolayers are favorable for charge transport. The expanded interlayer spacing ensures fast electrolyte diffusion and the decrease of the ion diffusion barrier. The obtained defected 1T-rich MoS₂/m-C nanoflowers exhibit high Na-storage capacity (557 mAh g^-1 after 80 cycles at 0.1 A g^-1), excellent rate capacity (411 mAh g^-1 at 10 A g^-1), and long-term cycling performance (364 mAh g^-1 after 1000 cycles at 2 A g^-1). Furthermore, a Na-ion full cell composed of the 1T-rich MoS₂/m-C anode and Na₃V₂(PO₄)₃/C cathode maintains excellent cycling stability at 0.5 A g^-1 during 400 cycles. Theoretical calculations are also performed to evaluate the phase stability, electronic conductivity, and Na⁺ diffusion behavior of 1T-rich MoS₂/m-C. The energy storage performance demonstrates its excellent application prospects.

Aerosol Jet Printing of Hybrid Ti3C2Tx/C Nanospheres for Planar Micro-supercapacitors

When utilized in energy devices, the restacking tendency of MXene Ti3C2Tx inhibits its electrochemical performance. Using aerosol jet printing (AJP) technology, hybrid Ti3C2Tx/C nanospheres are synthesized with C nanoparticle-bonded MXene nanosheets, and the restacking of MXene nanosheets is blocked efficiently. The formation mechanism for hybrid Ti3C2Tx/C nanospheres has been hypothesized, and the Ti3C2Tx/C is anticipated to assemble and shape along the droplet surface in tandem with the Marangoni flow within the droplet. The planar microsupercapacitor devices generated from these hybrid spherical nanostructures with increased interlayer spacing exhibit exceptional areal capacitance performance. This concept offers a straightforward and effective method for constructing 3D-structured MXene with suppressed self-stacking for diverse high-performance micro energy storage devices.

TiVCTx MXene/Chalcogenide Heterostructure-Based High-Performance Magnesium-Ion Battery as Flexible Integrated Units

Magnesium-ion batteries (MIB) have gradually attracted attention owing to their high theoretical capacity, high safety, and low cost. A bimetallic metal-organic framework self-sacrificing template and a co-assembly strategy are used to prepare a high-performance, stable cycling NiSe₂ -CoSe₂ @TiVCT_x (NCSe@TiVC) heterostructure MIB cathode that can be used as a flexible integrated unit to power future self-powered systems. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of TiVCT_x MXene and NCSe, the NCSe@TiVC heterostructure electrode has a discharge-specific capacity of 136 mAh g^-1 at 0.05 A g^-1 and high cycling stability of over 500 cycles; the assembled pouch-cell device as flexible integrated unit exhibits good practicability. The magnesium ion storage mechanism is also validated using quantitative kinetic analysis, ex situ XRD, and XPS techniques. Density functional theory analysis indicates the most stable Mg-atom adsorption sites in the heterostructure. This study broadens the possibilities for applying the TiVCT_x MXene heterostructure to energy storage materials and future self-powered flexible systems.

Recent Research Progress in the Structure, Fabrication, and Application of MXene-Based Heterostructures

Two-dimensional (2D) materials have received increasing attention in the scientific research community owing to their unique structure, which has endowed them with unparalleled properties and significant application potential. However, the expansion of the applications of an individual 2D material is often limited by some inherent drawbacks. Therefore, many researchers are now turning their attention to combine different 2D materials, making the so-called 2D heterostructures. Heterostructures can integrate the merits of each component and achieve a complementary performance far beyond a single part. MXene, as an emerging family of 2D nanomaterials, exhibits excellent electrochemical, electronic, optical, and mechanical properties. MXene-based heterostructures have already been demonstrated in applications such as supercapacitors, sensors, batteries, and photocatalysts. Nowadays, increasing research attention is attracted onto MXene-based heterostructures, while there is less effort spent to summarize the current research status. In this paper, the recent research progress of MXene-based heterostructures is reviewed, focusing on the structure, common preparation methods, and applications in supercapacitors, sensors, batteries, and photocatalysts. The main challenges and future prospects of MXene-based heterostructures are also discussed to provide valuable information for the researchers involved in the field.

Perspectives on Working Voltage of Aqueous Supercapacitors

Aqueous supercapacitors have the superiorities of high safety, environmental friendliness, inexpensive, etc. High energy density supercapacitors are not conducive to manufacturing due to the limitation of water thermodynamic decomposition potential, resulting in a narrow working voltage window. To address such challenges, a great endeavor has started to investigate high voltage aqueous supercapacitors as well as making some progress. This review summarizes key strategies regarding the realization of wide working voltage of aqueous supercapacitors and analyzes the involved mechanism, including the optimization of electrodes, electrolytes, diaphragms, and supercapacitor structures. From the perspective of extending the theoretical voltage window, electrode functionalization, heteroatom doping, neutral electrolyte, water-in-salt electrolyte, introducing redox mediators into electrolyte, and designing asymmetric structure are effective strategies for achieving this goal. Further, the actual voltage window can be maximized by optimizing the electrode mass ratio, adjusting potential of zero voltage, and electrode functionalization. The challenge and future of expanding working voltage of aqueous supercapacitors are further discussed. Importantly, this review provides inspiration for the development of supercapacitors with high energy density.

Surface Selenization Strategy for V2CTx MXene toward Superior Zn-Ion Storage

MXenes are promising cathode materials for aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) owing to their layered structure, metallic conductivity, and hydrophilicity. However, they suffer from low capacities unless they are subjected to electrochemically induced second phase formation, which is tedious, time-consuming, and uncontrollable. Here we propose a facile one-step surface selenization strategy for realizing advanced MXene-based nanohybrids. Through the selenization process, the surface metal atoms of MXenes are converted to transition metal selenides (TMSes) exhibiting high capacity and excellent structural stability, whereas the inner layers of MXenes are purposely retained. This strategy is applicable to various MXenes, as demonstrated by the successful construction of VSe₂@V₂CT_x, TiSe₂@Ti₃C₂T_x, and NbSe₂@Nb₂CT_x. Typically, VSe₂@V₂CT_x delivers high-rate capability (132.7 mA h g^-1 at 2.0 A g^-1), long-term cyclability (93.1% capacity retention after 600 cycles at 2.0 A g^-1), and high capacitive contribution (85.7% at 2.0 mV s^-1). Detailed experimental and simulation results reveal that the superior Zn-ion storage is attributed to the engaging integration of V₂CT_x and VSe₂, which not only significantly improves the Zn-ion diffusion coefficient from 4.3 × 10^-15 to 3.7 × 10^-13 cm² s^-1 but also provides sufficient structural stability for long-term cycling. This study offers a facile approach for the development of high-performance MXene-based materials for advanced aqueous metal-ion batteries.

Interfacial Self-assembly of Organics/MXene Hybrid Cathodes Toward High-Rate-Performance Sodium Ion Batteries

Conjugated quinones are promising cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries. However, the contemporary primary conjugated quinones cathodes still hold to limited capacity, poor rate performance and low cyclability, due to the poor electronic and ionic conductivity. Herein, a series of high-performance conjugated-quinones@MXene hybrid cathodes is constructed by an in situ polymerization-assembly strategy based on the hydrogen bond and S-Ti interaction. The PAQS@Ti₃C₂T_x MXene hybrid, as a typical example, exhibits sandwiched structure with intimate PAQS@MXene contact, resulting in efficient interfacial mass transfer. The assembled MXene is able to build interconnected conductive channels in the hybrid cathodes for continuous and fast electrons/ions transport, which is verified by both the experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. As a result, the optimal PAQS@MXene hybrid electrode delivers excellent electrochemical performances with high capacity (∼242 mA h g^-1 at 100 mA g^-1), superior fast-charge/discharge ability (∼148 and 121 mA h g^-1 at 5 and 10 A g^-1, respectively), and ultralong cycle life (capacity as high as 57 mA h g^-1 after 9000 cycles at 5 A g^-1), which are more superior to that of the pure PAQS electrodes. Besides, the analogous PPTS@Ti₃C₂T_x MXene hybrid cathode also shows better performances compared to the pure materials.

Interfacial Covalent Bonding Endowing Ti3 C2 -Sb2 S3 Composites High Sodium Storage Performance

Antimony sulfide is attracting enormous attention due to its remarkable theoretical capacity as anode for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). However, it still suffers from poor structural stability and sluggish reaction kinetics. Constructing covalent chemical linkage to anchor antimony sulfide on two-dimension conductive materials is an effective strategy to conquer the challenges. Herein, Ti₃ C₂ -Sb₂ S₃ composites are successfully achieved with monodispersed Sb2S3 uniformly pinned on the surface of Ti₃ C₂ T_x MXene through covalent bonding of Ti-O-Sb and S-Ti. Ti₃ C₂ T_x MXene serves as both charge storage contributor and flexible conductive buffer to sustain the structural integrity of the electrode. Systematic analysis indicates that construction of efficient interfacial chemical linkage could bridge the physical gap between Sb2S3 nanoparticles and Ti₃ C₂ T_x MXene, thus promoting the interfacial charge transfer efficiency. Furthermore, the interfacial covalent bonding could also effectively confine Sb2S3 nanoparticles and the corresponding reduced products on the surface of Ti₃ C₂ T_x MXene. Benefited from the unique structure, Ti₃ C₂ -Sb₂ S₃ anode delivers a high reversible capacity of 475 mAh g^-1 at 0.2 A g^-1 after 300 cycles, even retaining 410 mAh g^-1 at 1.0 A g^-1 after 500 cycles. This strategy is expected to shed more light on interfacial chemical linkage towards rational design of advanced materials for SIBs.

Interface-Driven Pseudocapacitance Endowing Sandwiched CoSe2/N-Doped Carbon/TiO2 Microcubes with Ultra-Stable Sodium Storage and Long-Term Cycling Stability

Cobalt diselenide (CoSe₂) has drawn great concern as an anode material for sodium-ion batteries due to its considerable theoretical capacity. Nevertheless, the poor cycling stability and rate performance still impede its practical implantation. Here, CoSe₂/nitrogen-doped carbon-skeleton hybrid microcubes with a TiO₂ layer (denoted as TNC-CoSe₂) are favorably prepared via a facile template-engaged strategy, in which a TiO₂-coated Prussian blue analogue of Co₃[Co(CN)₆]₂ is used as a new precursor accompanied with a selenization procedure. Such structures can concurrently boost ion and electron diffusion kinetics and inhibit the structural degradation during cycling through the close contact between the TiO₂ layer and NC-CoSe₂. Besides, this hybrid structure promotes the superior Na-ion intercalation pseudocapacitance due to the well-designed interfaces. The as-prepared TNC-CoSe₂ microcubes exhibit a superior cycling capability (511 mA h g^-1 at 0.2 A g^-1 after 200 cycles) and long cycling life (456 mA h g^-1 at 6.4 A g^-1 for 6000 cycles with a retention of 92.7%). Coupled with a sodium vanadium fluorophosphate (Na₃V₂(PO₄)₂F₃)@C cathode, this assembled full cell displays a specific capacity of 281 mA h g^-1 at 0.2 A g^-1 for 100 cycles. This work can be potentially used to improve other metal selenide-based anodes for rechargeable batteries.

Sandwich-Structured Sn4P3@MXene Hybrid Anodes with High Initial Coulombic Efficiency for High-Rate Lithium-Ion Batteries

The high theoretical capacity makes metal phosphides appropriate anode candidates for Li-ion batteries, but their applications are restricted due to the limited structural instability caused by the huge volume change, as in other high-capacity materials. Here, we design an integrated electrode consisting of Sn₄P₃ nanoparticles sandwiched between transition-metal carbide (MXene) nanosheets. Tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAOH) plays an essential role in the formation of such sandwich structures by producing negatively charged MXene sheets with expanded layer spacings. The strong C-O-P oxygen bridge bond enables tight anchoring of Sn₄P₃ nanoparticles on the surface of MXene layers. The obtained Sn₄P₃-based nanocomposites exhibit high reversible capacity with an initial Coulombic efficiency of 82% and outstanding rate performance (1519 mAh cm^-3 at a current density of 5 A g^-1). The conductive and flexible MXene layers on both sides of Sn₄P₃ nanoparticles provide the desired electric conductivity and elastomeric space to accommodate the large volume change of Sn₄P₃ during lithiation. Therefore, the Sn₄P₃@MXene hybrid exhibits an enhanced cyclic performance of 820 mAh g^-1 after 300 cycles at a current density of 1 A g^-1.

Room-Temperature Assembled MXene-Based Aerogels for High Mass-Loading Sodium-Ion Storage

Low-temperature assembly of MXene nanosheets into three-dimensional (3D) robust aerogels addresses the crucial stability concern of the nano-building blocks during the fabrication process, which is of key importance for transforming the fascinating properties at the nanoscale into the macroscopic scale for practical applications. Herein, suitable cross-linking agents (amino-propyltriethoxysilane, Mn²⁺, Fe²⁺, Zn²⁺, and Co²⁺) as interfacial mediators to engineer the interlayer interactions are reported to realize the graphene oxide (GO)-assisted assembly of Ti₃C₂T_x MXene aerogel at room temperature. This elaborate aerogel construction not only suppresses the oxidation degradation of Ti₃C₂T_x but also generates porous aerogels with a high Ti₃C₂T_x content (87 wt%) and robustness, thereby guaranteeing the functional accessibility of Ti₃C₂T_x nanosheets and operational reliability as integrated functional materials. In combination with a further sulfur modification, the Ti₃C₂T_x aerogel electrode shows promising electrochemical performances as the freestanding anode for sodium-ion storage. Even at an ultrahigh loading mass of 12.3 mg cm^-2, a pronounced areal capacity of 1.26 mAh cm^-2 at a current density of 0.1 A g^-1 has been achieved, which is of practical significance. This work conceptually suggests a new way to exert the utmost surface functionalities of MXenes in 3D monolithic form and can be an inspiring scaffold to promote the application of MXenes in different areas.

Rational design of Ti3C2Cl2 MXenes nanodots-interspersed MXene@NiAl-layered double hydroxides for enhanced pseudocapacitor storage

Although electrodes based on two dimensional hybrids with interstratification-assemble have been widely studied for supercapacitors, the performance enhancement still remains challenge mainly due to the random dispersion of surface passivated two dimensional nanosheets. Herein, a new covalent surface functionalization of MXene-based Ti₃C₂Cl₂ nanodots-interspersed MXene@NiAl-layered double hydroxides (QD-Ti₃C₂Cl₂@NiAl-LDHs) hybrid electrode with superior pseudocapacitor storage performance has been elaborately designed by electrostatic-assembled. As a result, the QD-Ti₃C₂Cl₂@NiAl-LDHs electrode exhibits a super specific capacitance of 2010.8F g^-1 at 1.0 A g^-1 and high energy density of 100.5 Wh kg^-1 at a power density of 299.8 W kg^-1. In addition, 94.1% capacitance retention is achieved after cycling for 10,000 cycles at 1.0 A g^-1, outperforming previously reported of two dimensional hybrids electrode for supercapacitor. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the superior pseudocapacitor storage performance of the QD-Ti₃C₂Cl₂@NiAl-LDHs may be attributed to the creation of numerous electrochemical active sites and the enhancement of electrical conductivity by the QD-Ti₃C₂Cl₂ MXene. This work provides new strategy for developing excellent pseudocapacitor supercapacitor based on two dimensional hybrid electrode.

Hierarchical MXene/transition metal chalcogenide heterostructures for electrochemical energy storage and conversion

MXenes have gained rapidly increasing attention owing to their two-dimensional (2D) layered structures and unique mechanical and physicochemical properties. However, MXenes have some intrinsic limitations (e.g., the restacking tendency of the 2D structure) that hinder their practical applications. Transition metal chalcogenide (TMC) materials such as SnS, NiS, MoS₂, FeS₂, and NiSe₂ have attracted much interest for energy storage and conversion by virture of their earth-abundance, low costs, moderate overpotentials, and unique layered structures. Nonetheless, the intrinsic poor electronic conductivity and huge volume change of TMC materials during the alkali metal-ion intercalation/deintercalation process cause fast capacity fading and poor-rate and poor-cycling performances. Constructing heterostructures based on metallic conductive MXenes and highly electrochemically active TMCs is a promising and effective strategy to solve these problems and enhance the electrochemical performances. This review highlights and discusses the recent research development of MXenes and hierarchical MXene/TMC heterostructures, with a focus on the synthesis strategies, surface/heterointerface engineering, and potential applications for lithium-ion batteries, sodium-ion batteries, lithium-sulfur batteries, supercapacitors, electrocatalysis, and photocatalysis. The critical challenges and perspectives of the future development of MXenes and hierarchical MXene/TMC heterostructures for electrochemical energy storage and conversion are forecasted.

3D Net-like GO-d-Ti3C2Tx MXene Aerogels with Catalysis/Adsorption Dual Effects for High-Performance Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

High theoretical specific capacity and rich resources in nature make sulfur an ideal cathode material for lithium-metal batteries. However, the shuttle effect and sluggish reduction reaction kinetics of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) seriously affect the performance of the batteries. Here, we report GO-d-Ti₃C₂T_x MXene aerogels with a novel three-dimensional (3D) reticular structure that served as sulfur host cathode materials for lithium-sulfur batteries (LiSBs), which benefits adsorption/catalytic conversion of LiPSs simultaneously. The dissolved LiPSs can be rapidly captured through chemisorption and then catalyzed into insoluble Li₂S by low-coordinated-state Ti on the d-Ti₃C₂T_x MXene surface. The combination of adsorption and catalysis enormously improves the capacity and cycling performance of LiSBs. At an S mass loading of 1.5 mg cm^-2, the cell with the S@GM0.4 composite electrode achieves excellent cycling performance. The discharge specific capacity of 1039 mA h g^-1 (1.56 mA h cm^-2) decays to 542.9 mA h g^-1 after 1000 cycles with a capacity fading rate of 0.048% per cycle at 0.5 C. Even at an S mass loading of 4.88 mg cm^-2, an areal capacity of 4.3 mA h cm^-2 can be achieved at 0.2 C.

1T MoS2growth from exfoliated MoS2nucleation as high rate anode for sodium storage

Recently, metallic 1T MoS₂has been investigated due to its excellent performance in electrocatalysts, photocatalysts, supercapacitors and secondary batteries. However, there are only a few fabrication methods to synthesize stable 1T MoS₂. In this work, exfoliated MoS₂is employed as seed crystals for the nucleation and growth of a stable 1T MoS₂grains by an epitaxial growth strategy. The 1T MoS₂displays a large interlayer spacing around 0.95 nm, excellent hydrophilia and more electrochemically active sites along the basal plane, which contribute an efficient ion/electron transport pathway and structural stability. When employed as the anode material for sodium ion batteries, the 1T MoS₂electrodes can survive 500 full charge/discharge cycles with a minimum capacity loss of 0.40 mAh g^-1cycle^-1tested at a current density of 1.0 A g^-1, and the capacity degradation is as low as 0.39 mAh g^-1cycle^-1at a current density of 2.0 A g^-1.
