Abstract
AIM To investigate differences in iron deposition between infarct and normal cerebral arterial regions in acute ischaemic stroke (AIS) patients using quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM). MATERIALS AND METHODS Forty healthy controls and 40 AIS patients were recruited, and their QSM images were obtained. There were seven regions of interest (ROIs) in AIS patients, including the infarct regions of responsible arteries (R1), the non-infarct regions of responsible arteries (R2), the contralateral symmetrical sites of lesions (R3), and the non-responsible cerebral arterial regions (R4, R5, R6, R7). For the healthy controls, the cerebral arterial regions corresponding to the AIS patient group were selected as ROIs. The differences in corresponding ROI susceptibilities between AIS patients and healthy controls and the differences in susceptibilities between infarcted and non-infarct regions in AIS patients were compared. RESULTS The susceptibilities of infarct regions in AIS patients were significantly higher than those in healthy controls (p<0.0001). There was no significant difference in non-infarct regions between the two groups (p>0.05). The susceptibility of the infarct regions in AIS patients was significantly higher than those of the non-infarct region of responsible artery and non-responsible cerebral arterial regions (p<0.01). CONCLUSIONS Abnormal iron deposition detected by QSM in the infarct regions of AIS patients may not affect iron levels in the non-infarct regions of responsible arteries and normal cerebral arteries, which may open the door for potential new diagnostic and treatment strategies.

Abstract
The N6-methyladenosine (m6A) methyltransferase METTL3 has been demonstrated to function in mediating m6A modification, but its role in ischemic stroke (IS) has not been fully elucidated. This study aimed to explore the downstream mechanism of METTL3-mediated m6A modification in IS. GSE16561 and GSE22255 were downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus database for analysis of differentially expressed genes (DEGs), and it was found that METTL3 mRNA was downregulated in IS. Then quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction was used to verify the downregulation of METTL3 mRNA in the peripheral blood of IS patients and the cortexes of transient middle cerebral artery occlusion mice. By combining DEGs with the m6A-downregulated genes in GSE142386 which performed methylated RNA immunoprecipitation sequencing (MeRIP-seq) on METTL3-deficient and control endothelial cells, a total of 131 genes were identified as the METTL3-mediated m6A-modified genes in IS. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway enrichment analysis showed that the genes were mainly involved in cytokine-cytokine receptor interaction, MAPK signaling pathway and NF-kappa B signaling pathway. CTSS and SBK1 were further screened as the key METTL3-mediated m6A-modified genes by random forest model and PCR validation. The ROC curve analysis showed that the combination with CTSS and SBK1 was of good diagnostic value for IS, with the AUC of 0.810, sensitivity of 0.780, and specificity of 0.773. Overall, we found that METTL3-mediated m6A modification may influence the occurrence and development of IS by participating in inflammation-related biological processes, and two key m6A-modified genes mediated by METTL3 (CTSS and SBK1) can be used as diagnostic biomarkers for IS.

Abstract
Airway remodeling is a major pathological characteristic of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This study aimed to investigate the effect of Abhd2 deficiency on ovalbumin (OVA)-induced airway remodeling and inflammation in vivo. Abhd2-deficient mice were used to establish an OVA-induced asthma model. Lung tissues were analyzed using hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining, Masson staining, immunohistochemistry, quantitative reverse transcription- polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), and western blotting were used to determine the role of Abhd2 in the regulation of OVA-induced airway remodeling and inflammation. Our findings revealed that the RNA expression of inflammatory factors, including IL-1β, IL-6, IL-4, and IL-13, was significantly increased in OVA-induced Abhd2 Gt/Gt asthmatic mice. The expression of IFN-γ was decreased significantly in OVA-induced Abhd2 Gt/Gt asthmatic mice. The protein expression of airway remodeling factors, including α-SMA, type I collagen, and Ki67, was also increased in OVA-induced Abhd2 Gt/Gt asthmatic mice compared to that in OVA-induced wild-type (WT) mice. Additionally, Abhd2 deficiency promoted the expression of p-Akt in tissues of the asthma model. These results suggest that Abhd2 deficiency exacerbates airway remodeling and inflammation through the PI3K/Akt pathway in chronic asthma.

Abstract
Circular RNAs are involved in intervention strategies for treating ischemic stroke (IS). However, circCNOT6L (hsa_circ_0006168) has not yet been reported in IS. Thus, we aimed to explore the potential role of circCNOT6L and its molecular mechanism in IS. In this study, we first found that the expression of both exosomal circCNOT6L (P = 0.0006) and plasma circCNOT6L (P = 0.0054) was down-regulated in IS patients compared with controls. Clinically, a negative correlation was observed between the relative expression level of circCNOT6L and the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score and infarct volume of the brain. Simultaneously, the relative expression level of circCNOT6L was negatively associated with multiple risk factors for IS, such as mean platelet volume (MPV), red cell distribution width (RDW), very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL), and serum potassium, whereas it was positively correlated with high-density lipoprotein (HDL). In vitro, circCNOT6L silencing blocked cell viability and proliferation, while it promoted cell apoptosis of astrocytes undergoing oxygen-glucose deprivation/reperfusion (OGD/R) treatment. Mechanistically, the RNA antisense purification (RAP) assay and luciferase reporter assay revealed that circCNOT6L acts as a miRNA sponge to absorb miR-99a-5p and then regulates the expression of serine proteinase inhibitor (SERPINE1). In the further rescue experiment, overexpressing SERPINE1 could rescue the cell apoptotic signals due to circCNOT6L depletion. In conclusion, CircCNOT6L attenuated the cell apoptotic signal of astrocytes via the miR99a-5p/SERPINE1 axis and then alleviated injury after hypoxia induced by ischemic stroke.

Abstract
The prevalence and mortality of heart disease have a persistent existence, and it is important to develop active substances with cardioprotective properties. It has been reported that peptides from animal heart hydrolysates possess cardioprotective activity, but those mechanisms and the sequence of peptides are still unrevealed. In the present study, the extracts of bovine myocardium were prepared by enzymatic hydrolysis (BHH-A) and water extraction (BHH-W). The cardioprotective function of peptides was verified in the DOX-induced H9c2 cells and myocardial injury mice. The mass spectrometry was used to contrast the differences of active ingredients between BHH-W and BHH-A. Results suggested that both BHH-A and BHH-W could increase the activity of antioxidant enzymes in cardiomyocytes and reduce the inflammatory level and apoptosis of myocardial cells. The improvement effects of BHH-A on myocardial injury in mice were better than those of BHH-W. The analysis of peptide composition demonstrated that the contents with N-segment hydrophobic amino acids were higher in the peptides identified in BHH-A. Hence, BHH-A could be used as a potential active substance to improve DOX-induced myocardial injury by reducing oxidative damage, inflammation, and cardiomyocyte apoptosis, and its activity may be related to the richness of small molecular peptides and hydrophobic amino acids.

Abstract
The accumulation of antibiotics in aquatic environments poses a serious threat to human health. Photocatalytic degradation is a promising method for removing antibiotics from water, but its practical implementation requires improvements in photocatalyst activity and recovery. Here, a novel graphite felt-supported MnS/Polypyrrole composite (MnS/PPy/GF) was constructed to achieve effective adsorption of antibiotics, stable loading of photocatalyst, and rapid separation of spatial charge. Systematic characterization of composition, structure and photoelectric properties indicated the efficient light absorption, charge separation and migration of the MnS/PPy/GF, which achieved 86.2% removal of antibiotic ciprofloxacin (CFX), higher than that of MnS/GF (73.7%) and PPy/GF (34.8%). The charge transfer-generated 1O2, energy transfer-generated 1O2, and photogenerated h+ were identified as the dominant reactive species, which mainly attacked the piperazine ring in the photodegradation of CFX by MnS/PPy/GF. The •OH was confirmed to participate in the defluorination of CFX via hydroxylation substitution. The MnS/PPy/GF-based photocatalytic process could ultimately achieve the mineralization of CFX. The facile recyclability, robust stability, and excellent adaptability to actual aquatic environments further confirmed MnS/PPy/GF is a promising eco-friendly photocatalyst for antibiotic pollution control.

Abstract
Background There are very few professional recommendations or guidelines on the needle thoracentesis decompression (NTD) for the tension pneumothorax in the elderly. This study aimed to investigate the safety and risk factors of tension pneumothorax NTD in patients over 75 years old based on CT evaluation of the chest wall thickness (CWT). Methods The retrospective study was conducted among 136 in-patients over 75 years old. The CWT and closest depth to vital structure of the second intercostal space at the midclavicular line (second ICS-MCL) and the fifth intercostal space at the midaxillary line (fifth ICS-MAL) were compared as well as the expected failure rates and the incidence of severe complications of different needles. We also analyzed the influence of age, sex, presence or absence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and body mass index (BMI) on CWT. Results The CWT of the second ICS-MCL was smaller than the fifth ICS-MAL both on the left and the right side (P < 0.05). The success rate associated with a 7 cm needle was significantly higher than a 5 cm needle (P < 0.05), and the incidence of severe complications with a 7 cm needle was significantly less than an 8 cm needle (P < 0.05). The CWT of the second ICS-MCL was significantly correlated with age, sex, presence or absence of COPD, and BMI (P < 0.05), whereas the CWT of the fifth ICS-MAL was significantly correlated with sex and BMI (P < 0.05). Conclusion The second ICS-MCL was recommended as the primary thoracentesis site and a 7 cm needle was advised as preferred needle length for the older patients. Factors such as age, sex, presence or absence of COPD, and BMI should be considered when choosing the appropriate needle length.

Abstract
Elemental sulfur (S0)-based autotrophic denitrification (SAD) has gained intensive attention in the treatment of secondary effluent for its low cost, high efficiency, and good stability. However, in practice, the supplementary addition of limestone is necessary to balance the alkalinity consumption during SAD operation, which increases water hardness and reduces the effective reaction volume. In this study, a coupled sulfur and electrode-driven autotrophic denitrification (SEAD) process was proposed with superior nitrate removal performance, less accumulation of sulfate, and self-balance of acidity-alkalinity capacity by regulating the applied voltage. The dual-channel electron supply from S0 and electrodes made the nitrate removal rate constant k in the SEAD process 3.7-5.1 and 1.4-3.5 times higher than that of the single electrode- and sulfur-driven systems, respectively. The S° contributed to 75.3%-83.1% of nitrate removal and the sulfate yield during SEAD (5.67-6.26 mg SO42-/mg NO3--N) was decreased by 17%-25% compared with SAD. The S0 particle and electrode both as active bio-carriers constructed collaborative denitrification communities and functional genes. Pseudomonas, Ralstonia and Brevundimonas were the dominant denitrifying genera in S0 particle biofilm, while Pseudomonas, Chryseobacterium, Pantoea and Comamonas became dominant denitrifying genera in the cathode biofilm. The narG/Z/H/Y/I/V, nxrA/B, napA/B, nirS/K, norB/C and nosZ were potential functional genes for efficient nitrate reduction during the SEAD process. Metagenomic sequencing indicated that S0 as an electron donor has greater potential for complete denitrification than the electrode. These findings revealed the potential of SEAD for acting as a highly efficient post denitrification process.

Abstract
Removing and recovering uranium (U) from U-mining wastewater would be appealing, which simultaneously reduces the adverse environmental impact of U mining activities and mitigates the depletion of conventional U resources. In this study, we demonstrate the application of a constant-voltage electrochemical (CVE) method for the removal and recovery of U from U-mining wastewater, in an ambient atmosphere. The effects of operation conditions were elucidated in synthetic U-bearing water experiments, and the cell voltage and the ionic strength were found to play important roles in both the U extraction kinetics and the operation cost. The mechanistic studies show that, in synthetic U-bearing water, the CVE U extraction proceeds exclusively via a single-step one-electron reduction mechanism, where pentavalent U is the end product. In real U-mining wastewater, the interference of water matrices led to the disproportionation of the pentavalent U, resulting in the formation of tetravalent and hexavalent U in the extraction products. The U extraction efficacy of the CVE method was evaluated in real U-mining wastewater, and results show that the CVE U extraction method can be efficient with operation costs ranging from $0.55/kgU ~ $64.65/kgU, with varying cell voltages from 1.0 V to 4.0 V, implying its feasibility from the economic perspective.

Abstract
Stroke is the third leading cause of disability-adjusted life years worldwide, and drugs available for its treatment are limited. This study aimed to explore high-confidence candidate genes associated with ischemic stroke (IS) through bioinformatics analysis and identify potential diagnostic biomarkers and gene-drug interactions. Weighted gene coexpression network analysis (WGCNA) and differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were integrated to identify overlapping genes. Then, high-confidence candidate genes were screened by least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to evaluate the diagnostic value of high-confidence candidate genes as biomarkers for IS. The NetworkAnalyst database was used to construct the TF-gene network and miRNA-TF regulatory network of the high-confidence candidate genes. The DGIdb database was used to identified gene-drug interactions. Through the comprehensive analysis of GSE58294 and GSE16561, 10 high-confidence candidate genes were identified by LASSO regression: ARG1, LY96, ABCA1, SLC22A4, CD163, TPM2, SLC25A42, ID3, FAM102A and CD79B. FAM102A had the highest diagnostic value, and the area under curve (AUC), sensitivity and specificity values were 0.974, 0.919 and 0.936, respectively. The HPA database demonstrated that 10 high-confidence candidate genes were expressed in the brain and blood in normal humans. Finally, DGIdb database analysis identified 8 gene-drug interactions. We identified IS-related diagnostic biomarkers and gene-drug interactions that potentially provide new insights into the diagnosis and treatment of IS.

Abstract
Hydrothermal treatment (HT) is a pragmatic approach for pretreatment of kitchen waste (KW). This work investigated the effect of hydrothermal pretreatment (HTP) on the deoiling, desalting and liquid substances transformation of KW. The orthogonal test method was used to study the effects of three factors at five levels, including solid to liquid ratio (A1-5), heating time (B1-5) and hydrothermal temperature (C1-5). The results indicated that the floatable oil content was improved significantly after HTP. The highest floatable oil content was 84.54 mL/kg at the hydrothermal condition of 1/1.5, 20 min and 100 °C, which was 2.42 times higher than the control. The maximum desalination ratio (92.66%) was at A5B1C5 (1/2.5, 5 min, 100 °C), which was 4.48 times higher than control group (No.0) (20.67%). The VFAs concentration was the highest (11441.05 mg/kg) at 1/2.5, 5 min and 100 °C, which increased by 711.03% compared to the No.0 (1410.78 mg/kg). In addition, the maximum TOC value was obtained at 53530.84 mg/kg. After HTP, the acetic acid and butyric acid concentrations of the liquid phase increased, while the ethanol concentration decreased. The contents of T,NH4+-N and organic nitrogen in the liquid phase of the HTP system increased, while NO3--N remained at a low level (4.96-20.48 mg/kg). The range and variance analysis showed that the temperature had the greatest effect on the deoiling and the liquid substances transformation of KW among these three factors, followed by solid to liquid ratio and heating time. Based on the orthogonal experiment, the optimal parameters for KW deoiling were A3 (1/1.5), B4 (25 min) and C5 (100 °C). This work provided a reference for the KW deoiling and hence improve the efficient utilization of KW.

Abstract
Antimony sulfide is attracting enormous attention due to its remarkable theoretical capacity as anode for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). However, it still suffers from poor structural stability and sluggish reaction kinetics. Constructing covalent chemical linkage to anchor antimony sulfide on two-dimension conductive materials is an effective strategy to conquer the challenges. Herein, Ti3 C2 -Sb2 S3 composites are successfully achieved with monodispersed Sb2S3 uniformly pinned on the surface of Ti3 C2 Tx MXene through covalent bonding of Ti-O-Sb and S-Ti. Ti3 C2 Tx MXene serves as both charge storage contributor and flexible conductive buffer to sustain the structural integrity of the electrode. Systematic analysis indicates that construction of efficient interfacial chemical linkage could bridge the physical gap between Sb2S3 nanoparticles and Ti3 C2 Tx MXene, thus promoting the interfacial charge transfer efficiency. Furthermore, the interfacial covalent bonding could also effectively confine Sb2S3 nanoparticles and the corresponding reduced products on the surface of Ti3 C2 Tx MXene. Benefited from the unique structure, Ti3 C2 -Sb2 S3 anode delivers a high reversible capacity of 475 mAh g-1 at 0.2 A g-1 after 300 cycles, even retaining 410 mAh g-1 at 1.0 A g-1 after 500 cycles. This strategy is expected to shed more light on interfacial chemical linkage towards rational design of advanced materials for SIBs.

Abstract
Anaerobic digestion technology has been widely used because it has a unique advantage of producing biogas as a renewable energy source. Therefore, several methods were studied to facilitate anaerobic methane production process. Coupling direct voltage and single conductive particles was an effective method to improve anaerobic wastewater treatment efficiency and methane production. However, the enhancement method was limited in this process due to the current of direct voltage or the toxicity of nanoparticles. Therefore, the granular activated carbon loaded with nanoscale zero valent iron (GAC-NZVI) particles prepared by co-precipitation method were added to the anaerobic synthetic wastewater system with direct voltage (0.10 V) to improve the treatment efficiency in this study. GAC-NZVI particles were added into anaerobic system with 0.10 V direct voltage to enhance CH4 production process. The COD removal and total CH4 production were enhanced by 4.22 % and 10.83 % with GAC-NZVI particles. The measurement results of EPS and Fe concentration showed that GAC-NZVI particles promoted the secretion of EPS by microorganisms, which could improve the floc strength of granular sludge. The measurements of conductivity and cyclic voltammetry (CV) showed that particles accelerated the metabolism of microorganism and promoted the electron transfer process. The increasing of Methanothrix and Methanobacterium could strengthen the methanogenesis. The abundances of bacteria and archaea using indirect interspecies electron exchange form (such as H2 or formate transfer microorganisms) were decreased after adding the particles. The results indicated that anaerobic treatment efficiency could be enhanced under the combined action of direct voltage and particles.

Abstract
Current photocatalytic uranium (U) extraction methods have intrinsic obstacles, such as the recombination of charge carriers, and the deactivation of catalysts by extracted U. Here we show that, by applying a bias potential on the photocatalyst, the photoelectrochemical (PEC) method can address these limitations. We demonstrate that, owing to efficient spatial charge-carriers separation driven by the applied bias, the PEC method enables efficient and durable U extraction. The effects of multiple operation conditions are investigated. The U extraction proceeds via single-step one-electron reduction, resulting in the formation of pentavalent U, which can facilitate future studies on this often-overlooked U species. In real seepage water the PEC method achieves an extraction capacity of 0.67 gU m-3·h-1 without deactivation for 156 h continuous operation, which is 17 times faster than the photocatalytic method. This work provides an alternative tool for U resource recovery and facilitates future studies on U(V) chemistry.

Abstract
Under the impact of COVID-19, the status and mechanisms of post-traumatic growth among medical workers facing challenges related to family-work conflict are of great concern. In view of the complex relationship between family-work conflict and post-traumatic growth, the present study sought to explore the specific relationships between family-work conflict and post-traumatic growth as well as the specific roles of positive psychological capital, perceived social support, and suppression. We recruited 1,347 participants. The results revealed that positive psychological capital and perceived social support played mediating roles, while suppression strategies moderated the mediating effect. Compared with the low suppression group, the negative impact of family-work conflict on positive psychological capital and perceived social support was reduced in the high suppression group. Thus, a higher level of suppression was more conducive to post-traumatic growth. The current study enriches and expands the findings of previous studies in theory and provides practical ways to promote post-traumatic growth in medical workers.

Abstract
Bile salts (BS), one of the biological amphiphiles, are usually used as solubilizing/emulsifying agents of lipids or drugs. However, BS such as sodium deoxycholate (NaDC) can't stabilize an oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion alone due to its unusual molecular structure. In this paper we report that these emulsifiers with poor emulsifying ability can be transformed to highly efficient emulsifiers by combining with negatively charged particles (silica or montmorillonite). Both together can synergistically co-stabilize oil-in-water emulsions at extremely low concentrations (minimum 0.01 mM NaDC plus 0.003 wt% particles). Moreover, the emulsions can be reversibly switched between stable and unstable triggered by CO2/N2 at room temperature. This strategy is universal for emulsions containing different oils (alkanes, aromatic hydrocarbons and triglycerides) and for different BS and offers a generic model for a variety of BS of different molecular structure, which will extend their applications in more technical fields such as emulsion polymerization, biphasic catalysis and emulsion extraction. Bile salts can be converted to efficient emulsifiers assisted by a trace amount of similarly charged nanoparticles and the emulsions formed are CO2/N2 switchable at room temperature.![]()

Abstract
An emerging inference is that vascular cells transfer their biological cargo to recipient cells by secretion of extracellular vesicles (EVs). This study explored the effects of EVs produced from VSMCs with Ang II (EVs-A) or LSW + Ang II on HUVECs. The EVs-A increase ROS production, activate inflammation, and upregulate the expression of adhesion molecules. Among the EVs-A, miR-22, miR-143, miR-144, and miR-155 were significantly downregulated, while VSMCs pre-incubated with LSW could produce improved EVs. RNA sequencing revealed differential expression of genes associated with endothelial dysfunction, including the TNF signaling pathway, NOD-like receptor signaling pathway, NF-κB signaling pathway, and fluid shear stress and atherosclerosis pathway. Finally, we found that LSW could improve endothelial function by repairing the expression of miRNAs in VSMCs. It also suggests a potential mechanism for the injury action of endogenous peptide Ang II and protective effects of exogenous peptide LSW on vascular endothelial cells.

Abstract
Herein, we describe pH-responsive Pickering emulsions stabilized by a sodium carboxylate-derived selenium surfactant (C10-Se-C10·(COONa)2) in combination with positively charged alumina nanoparticles. Unlike other bola-type carboxylate surfactants (e.g., disodium eicosanoate), C10-Se-C10·(COONa)2 is soluble in water with a low Krafft temperature (36.1 °C). The emulsions are sensitive to pH variations, and efficient demulsification can be achieved by a pH trigger. The carboxylic sodium group in the C10-Se-C10·(COONa)2 structure can be reversibly cycled between its anionic and nonionic states (carboxylic acid), resulting in a pH-controlled electrostatic attraction between the surfactant and alumina. The Pickering emulsion can be reversibly switched between "on" (stable) and "off" (unstable) states by pH at least four times. Compared with the emulsions stabilized by specially synthesized stimuli-responsive particles or surfactants, the method reported here is much easier to implement and requires very low concentrations of the surfactant and nanoparticles, with potential applications in the fields of biomedicine, drug delivery, and cosmetics.

Abstract
A method able to simultaneously obtain oil and defatted meal (rich in proteins) with high quality is preferable to others for processing black sesame seeds, which should also be green, healthy, highly efficient and sustainable. Methods including solvent extraction and hot-pressing currently available for the commercial production of oils are not able to meet all criteria just mentioned above. Therefore, development of new aqueous method of extracting black sesame oil has been promoted. In our study, we developed a new aqueous method using 1.95:10 aqueous salt solution-to-ground black sesame seed ratio which simultaneously recovered 96.54% black sesame oils and defatted meal with only 3.89% residual oils and 50.1% proteins (on dry weight basis). The oil produced had low acid value at 0.43 mgKOH/kg and peroxide value 3.37 mmol/kg and good other quality indexes. We found that proper amount of water added was essential for efficiently recover black sesame oils while other factors including temperature and time of baking raw materials to deactivate lipase activity, pore size of the sieve for ground black sesame seeds to pass through, addition of salt as well as temperature and time of agitating significantly affected the recovery efficiency. As compared with other methods, the new aqueous method had higher oil recovery rate or quality and was more environmentally friendly. No waste water was discharged during separation of oils. The experimental data can be applied to guide the design and manufacture of production line of black sesame oilseeds on a pilot or commercial scale.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The combination of conventional transarterial chemoembolization (cTACE) and systemic therapy has the potential to treat chemotherapy-refractory unresectable colorectal liver metastases (CRLMs). This study aimed to compare survival after this combined treatment versus systemic chemotherapy alone. METHODS This single-centre RCT included patients with unresectable CRLMs that progressed after first-line treatment. Patients were randomized on a 1 : 1 basis to either systemic chemotherapy with or without cTACE, without further stratification. The primary outcome was progression-free survival (PFS). Secondary outcomes were overall response rate, disease control rate, conversion rate to liver resection, overall survival, and adverse events. RESULTS Of 180 patients recruited, 168 were randomized. Eighty-five patients in arm A received systemic chemotherapy plus cTACE and 83 in arm B received systemic chemotherapy alone. Median PFS was longer in arm A than B (6.7 versus 3.8 months; hazard ratio (HR) 0.67, 95 per cent c.i. 0.49 to 0.91; P = 0.009), but did not translate into prolonged median overall survival (18.4 versus 14.8 months; HR = 0.92, 0.62 to 1.36; P = 0.669). Overall response rates (20 versus 22 per cent; P = 0.788) and conversion rate to liver resection (18 versus 16 per cent; P = 0.730) were no different between arms A and B. The disease control rate was higher in arm A than arm B (67 versus 51 per cent; P = 0.030). No adverse event higher than grade 3 according to the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events was observed during treatment. CONCLUSION Systemic chemotherapy plus cTACE is a safe option as second-line treatment for unresectable colorectal liver metastases, with a modest effect on PFS. Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to investigate the influences of micro ribonucleic acid (miR)-200b-5p on proliferation and apoptosis of ovarian cancer (OC) cells, and to explore its correlations with the target gene ATPase family, AAA domain containing 2 (ATAD2), and the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/Akt signaling pathway. MATERIALS AND METHODS Human ovarian fibroblasts (HOFs) or human OC cell lines (A2780) were cultured in vitro, and then, A2780 cells were separately transfected with miR-200b mimics or miR-NC or cultured with ATAD2-specific inhibitor BAY-850. Thereafter, the expression levels of miR-200b and ATAD2 messenger RNA (mRNA) were measured via qRT-PCR, and the proliferative capacity of cells was detected by CCK-8 assay. Next, the cell apoptosis was determined by means of flow cytometry and one-step TUNEL assay. Finally, the targeted regulatory relationship between miR-200b and ATAD2 was examined using a Luciferase reporter assay system, and the protein expressions were detected through Western blot (WB) assay. RESULTS It was found that the expression level of miR-200b was remarkably lower (p<0.05), while the mRNA expression level of ATAD2 was notably higher (p<0.05) in A2780 cells than those in HOFs. The transfection with miR-200b mimics markedly reduced the mRNA expression level of ATAD2 (p<0.05) and the proliferative capacity (p<0.05) and increased the apoptosis rate (p<0.05) of A2780 cells. Besides, it was detected via the Luciferase reporter assay system that miR-200b inhibited ATAD2. BAY-850 significantly decreased the expression level of ATAD2 protein (p<0.05) and the proliferative capacity (p<0.05) but improved the apoptosis rate (p<0.05) of cells. Moreover, both miR-200b mimics and BAY-850 could distinctly repress the protein expression levels of PI3K and p-Akt of the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway (p<0.05) and enhance the expression of suppressor gene p53 (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS MiR-200b-5p can inhibit the proliferation and promote the apoptosis of OC cells through targeted inhibition of ATAD2 expression and regulation of the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway.

Abstract
Understanding the interactions between magnetic particles (MPs) and polyaluminum chloride (PACl) is essential to elucidate the magnetic seeding coagulation (MSC) process. However, little is known about how MPs interact with the different Al species coexisting in the PACl. Here, the relationships among pollutants removal, residual Al distribution, and floc properties were comparatively studied in the MSC and traditional coagulation (TC) processes to address this issue. The response surface analysis indicated that the interaction between PACl and MPs dosages exhibited significant effects on turbidity and DOC removal. Negligible changes of dissolved Al after MPs addition indicated the weak connection between Ala and MPs. The formation of MPs-Alb-HA complexes resulted in the increase of turbidity removal from 90.2% to 96.0% and the reduction of colloidal Al from 0.67 to 0.30 mg L-1. Humic-like components could be adsorbed on MPs forming MPs-HA complexes, which enhanced the DOC removal from 55% to 58.5%. MPs addition produced loose flocs with a small floc fractal dimension value (1.74), so the average size and strength of flocs in the MSC process (425 μm and 49.7%) were lower than that in the TC process (464 μm and 58.3%). The cumulative volume percentage of large flocs (>700 μm) was decreased from 29.7% to 20.7% with MPs addition, indicating the disruption of large flocs and the reproduction of more fragments. The effective separation of these fragments by magnetic attraction maintained the efficient coagulation performance. This study provides new insights into the interaction mechanism of MPs and PACl in the MSC process.

Abstract
Sb holds the promise of being a high performance anode for sodium ion batteries(SIBs), while effective preparation of decent antimony(Sb) based anode materials for sodium storage is still under exploration. Herein, we propose a simple approach to achieve a high performance anode, using polyaniline as the carbon source and SbCl3as the metal source. Synergetic polymerization and hydrolysis reactions combined with subsequent thermal reduction endow Sb/C-PANI electrode possessing ultrafine Sb nanoparticles symmetrically distributed in the nitrogen(N) doped porous carbon matrix. The Sb/C-PANI electrode exhibits excellent sodium storage performance, featured for a high reversible capacity of 469.5 mAh g-1after 100 cycles at 100 mA g-1and 336.5 mAh g-1after 300 cycles under 500 mA g-1. Such impressive performance will advance the development of Sb based anode materials for sodium storage. The present approach provides a compatible strategy for preparation of anode materials with high reversible capacity and long lifespan.

Abstract
Sinopodophyllum hexandrum is an alpine medicinal plant that produces the anticancer compound podophyllotoxin (PPT). Although a positive relationship between PPT content and altitude has been proved and low temperature enhances plant growth and PPT accumulation has also been revealed, the role of UV radiation in regulating growth and PPT accumulation is still unclear In this study, morphophysiological traits, metabolites content and related genes expression were investigated by exposing S. hexandrum seedlings to treatment with UV-B radiation. The results showed that the contents of soluble sugars and flavonoids, and the expression levels of genes involved in glycometabolism (XET and β-1,3-glucanase) and flavonoid biosynthesis (PAL,C4H,4CL,CHS1 and DTX41) were enhanced in response to UV-B compared to CK. Moreover, genes involved in stress tolerance (MYB, WRKY,APX3 and EX2) were also upregulated in response to UV-B radiation. Although the whole plant biomass exhibited slightly increased values that depended largely on root development, the contents of chlorophyll and PPT and the expression levels of genes involved in photosynthesis (matK, ndhF,rbcL and ycf5) and PPT biosynthesis (C3H,CCoAMT,CCR,CAD, DPO, PLR,SDH, CPY719A23,OMT3,CYP71CU1,OMT1and 2-ODD) were significantly decreased in response to UV-B compared to CK. It can be concluded that UV-B radiation promotes soluble sugars and flavonoids accumulation, but inhibits PPT biosynthesis in S. hexandrum.

Abstract
Magnetic seeding coagulation (MSC) process has been used to accelerate flocs sedimentation with an applied magnetic field, offering large handling capacity and low energy consumption. The interactions of three typical Al species, aluminum chloride (AlCl3), Al13O4(OH)247+ polymer (Al13), and (AlO4)2Al28(OH)5618+ polymer (Al30), with magnetic particles (MPs) were examined to clarify the MSC process. In traditional coagulation (TC) process, the aggregation of primary Ala-dissolved organic matter (DOM) complexes with in-situ-formed polynuclear species generated a large average floc size (226 μm), which was proved to be efficient for DOC removal (52.6%). The weak connections between dissolved Ala-DOM complexes and MPs led to the negligible changes of dissolved Al after seeding with MPs in AlCl3. A significant interaction between MPs and Al13 was observed, in which the MPs-Al13-DOM complexes were proposed to be responsible for the significant improvement of DOC removal (from 47% to 52%) and residual total Al reduction (from 1.05 to 0.27 mg Al L-1) with MPs addition. Al30 produced a lower floc fractal dimension (Df = 1.88) than AlCl3 (2.08) and Al13 (1.99) in the TC process, whereas its floc strength (70.9%) and floc recovery (38.5%) were higher than the others. Although more detached fragments were produced with MPs addition, the effective sedimentation of these fragments with the applied magnetic field led to the decrease of residual turbidity and colloidal Al in Al30. The dependence of coagulation behavior to MPs and different Al species can be applied to guide the application of an effective MSC process.

Abstract
Anaerobic digestion is an effective treatment technology for wastewater. However, long HRT and low CH4 production limit the application of anaerobic treatment. Iron-based materials, carbon-based materials and Fe-C composite particles have been used in anaerobic processes. However, the strengthening effect of Fe-C composite particles on anaerobic systems requires further research. In this study, granular activated carbon (GAC) loaded with nanoscale zero-valent iron (NZVI) was prepared by a co-precipitation method and its morphology was characterized. Different concentrations of GAC-NZVI particles were used in the batch experiment to study the enhancing effect of the anaerobic biological treatment process. The water quality, sludge properties and microbial community were analyzed. The degradation rate of COD and total CH4 production increased by 9.38% and 14.29% with particles at a concentration of 1000 mg/L, respectively. The average methane yield was 169.86 mL CH4/g-COD removed, which was 9.39% higher than that of the control. The measurement results of extracellular polymeric substance (EPS), conductivity, cyclic voltammetry (CV) and Fe concentration indicated that the composite particles showed excellent electrical conductivity and promoted microorganism metabolism, which accelerated the use of substrates and methane generation. The 3-dimensional excitation (Ex) - emission (Em) matrix (3D-EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy of soluble microbial product (SMP) and EPS indicated that the particles could affect the endogenous respiration of microorganisms. Microbial community analysis revealed that the dominant genus Methanothrix (acetoclastic methanogens) increased by 13.32%, which could strengthen acetoclastic methanogenesis and lead to higher CH4 production. The abundance of hydrogenotrophic archaea decreased after the addition of GAC-NZVI. These results provide an alternate method for enhancing anaerobic wastewater treatment using conductive particles.

Abstract
Magnetic particles (MPs) assisted powdered activated carbon (PAC) is a promising composite material for adsorption removal of micropollutants. The fractional amount of Fe3O4 impacts the balance between adsorption capacity and magnetic property of magnetic activated carbons (MPACs), and therefore it affects the extent of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) removal. Here, five MPACs with different mass ratios of Fe3O4: PAC (1:1, 1:2, 1:4, 1:6, and 1:8) were prepared using a hydrothermal method and characterized by various spectroscopic methods. The spherical shaped MPs were monolayerly deposited on PAC with fewer pores blocked when the mass ratio of Fe3O4 was comparatively low (≤ 20%). MPAC6 (14.3 wt% of Fe3O4) had the best overall performance, with good Langmuir adsorption capacities for SMX (173.0 mg g-1) and excellent magnetic properties (9.0 emu g-1). Corresponding adsorption kinetics fitted well with the pseudo second-order kinetic model. The negative ΔG0 (-25.6 to -27.2 KJ mol-1) and ΔH0 (-9.14 KJ mol-1), and positive ΔS0 (0.55 KJ mol-1 K-1) properties indicated the spontaneous and exothermic nature of the adsorption process accompanied by an increase in entropy. The strong cation-assisted electron donor-acceptor and hydrophobic interactions were contributed to a high extent of SMX removal in the pH range of 2-4. Formation of negative charge-assisted H-bonds was responsible for the adsorption of hydrophilic SMX- on negatively charged MPAC6 in alkaline solution. Desorption and regeneration experiments showed SMX removal was still 92.3% in the 5th cycle. These findings give valuable insights into the interactions between SMX and MPACs and guide for choosing sustainable magnetic adsorbents for environmental applications.

Abstract
Objective: To explore the effect of occupational nickel exposure on blood glucose related indicators of workers. Methods: In March 2019, five electroplating enterprises and one plastic hardware enterprise were selected by cluster sampling method. 159 nickel plating workers were selected as the contact group, and 66 administrative personnel of the same enterprise were selected as the control group. The serum nickel concentration, fasting blood glucose (FPG) , fasting insulin (FIns) and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) were measured in the contact group and the control group. The differences of blood glucose related indexes between the two groups were compared, and the risk factors of abnormal blood glucose indexes were analyzed. Results: Compared with the control group, the blood nickel concentration and detection rate of nickel in the contact group were higher, the levels of FIns were lower, and the proportion of HbA1c was higher in the contact group (P<0.05) . Stratified analysis showed that compared with the control group, the blood glucose index of men in the contact group changed significantly (P<0.05) ; logistic regression analysis showed that male was an independent influencing factor for decreased FIns (OR=8.264, P<0.05) . Conclusion: Long term exposure to nickel can affect the blood glucose related indexes such as fins and HbA1c.

Abstract
Endothelial dysfunction is a common disorder of vascular homeostasis in hypertension characterized by oxidative stress, malignant migration, inflammatory response, and active adhesion response of endothelial cells. The extracellular vesicles (EVs), a vital participant in vascular cell communication, have been considered responsible for vascular disease progression. However, the potential mechanism of antihypertensive peptides against the EVs-induced endothelial dysfunction is still unclear. In this study, we investigated whether the antihypertensive peptides Val-Pro-Pro (VPP) and Ile-Pro-Pro (IPP) ameliorate the effects of EVs from Ang II-induced vascular smooth muscles (VSMCs) on the endothelial dysfunction. The dihydroethidium staining, wound healing assay, 3D cell culture, and co-culture with U937 monocyte were used to investigate the oxidant/antioxidant balance, migration, tube formation, and cell adhesion in EV-induced human umbilical vein endothelial cells. VPP and IPP treatment reduced the level of reactive oxygen species and EV-induced expression of adhesion molecules and restored the ability of tube formation by upregulating endothelial nitric oxide synthase expression. VPP and IPP reduced the protein levels of IL-6 to 227.34 ± 10.56 and 273.84 ± 22.28 pg/mL, of IL-1β protein to 131.56 ± 23.18 and 221.14 ± 13.8 pg/mL, and of MCP-1 to 301.48 ± 19.75 and 428.68 ± 9.59 pg/mL. These results suggested that the VPP and IPP are potential agents that can improve the endothelial dysfunction caused by EVs from Ang II-induced VSMCs.

Abstract
Different voltages were applied to anaerobic treatment to investigate the enhancement effects and the changes of microbial community structure. The results indicated that the best appropriate voltage was 0.10 V, COD removal increased by 16.72% at first 6 h and cumulative CH4 production increased by 23.39%. Average methane yield was 15.69% higher than that of control. The sludge measurements indicated that voltage addition could promote the interspecies electron transfer to produce more methane. The strengthening effect of voltage could be sustained for a short period of time when the voltage was removed. Microbial community analysis revealed that the changes of Methanothrix and Methanolinea resulted in higher biogas production. The increases of Smithella and Geobacter improved the possibility of "electronic syntrophism" between microorganisms and promoted the performance of DIET process. The results would provide the theoretical supports for enhancing the anaerobic treatment efficiency by voltages.

Abstract
AIM To examine the outcomes and different prognoses for colorectal cancer patients with liver metastases (CRCLM) treated with radiofrequency ablation (RFA) based on the origin of the primary tumour (rectum versus colon). MATERIALS AND METHODS Patients diagnosed with CRCLM from July 2011 to June 2018 were assessed in the study. The study included 114 patients with 176 lesions. All of the patients underwent RFA of their CRCLM. The overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) were assessed with Kaplan-Meier survival function estimate curves and Cox regression analysis between the group of patients with rectal cancer liver metastases (RCLM) and colon cancer liver metastases (CCLM). RESULTS Patients with RCLM exhibited worse OS and PFS than those with CCLM. The 1-, 2-, and 3-year OS rates were 87.5%, 75%, and 54.2% in the RCLM group and 93.9%, 87.8%, and 81.8% in the CCLM group (p=0.001), respectively. The 1-, 2-, and 3-year PFS rates were 43.7%, 22.9%, and 20.8% in the RCLM group and 57.6%, 45.4%, and 36.5% in the CCLM group (p=0.001), respectively. Multivariate analysis showed that primary tumour location, carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), and response to pre-ablation chemotherapy were independent variables for OS and PFS. The N state of the primary tumour also had a significant impact on OS. CONCLUSION This study showed that patients with CCLM had better prognoses than those with RCLM following RFA treatment. If patients intend to undergo RFA for CRCLM, the location of the primary tumour should be considered in the assessment of long-term therapeutic effects.

Abstract
Angiotensin II (Ang II), a vasoactive factor in the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS), can regulate vasoconstriction and promote multiple vascular diseases. In this study, the effects of potent antihypertensive peptide Val-Pro-Pro (VPP) and Ile-Pro-Pro (IPP) on the proliferation and migration of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) by extracellular vesicles (EVs) from vascular endothelial cells (VECs) were studied using a cell co-culture model. The VEC-derived EVs were isolated, characterized, and investigated. The present study demonstrated that the EVs from Ang II-induced VECs could promote proliferation, migration, and inflammatory factors (IL-6 increased to 40.75 ± 4.33 pg/mL and IL-1β increased to 28.62 ± 5.42 pg/mL) generation of VSMCs, VPP and IPP exerted discrepant inhibitory effects on this pathway. The EVs with RNase treatment lost the effects on VSMCs, indicating that the RNAs packed into vesicles may be a critical component. These results implied that VPP and IPP could alleviate Ang II-induced vascular dysfunction by modulating the EV-mediated transmission of RNAs between VECs and VSMCs.

Abstract
Research into the production of white sesame oil by aqueous extraction has been promoted because of concerns about the environment, health, and cost. The advanced aqueous method using a 1.95:10 liquid-to-raw material ratio, which was finally developed in this study, recovered 96.06% white sesame oil and produced de-oiled meal with high quality (3.98% residual oil content). The acid value and peroxide value of the oil produced were quite low at 0.19 mg KOH/kg and < 3.25 mmol/kg, respectively, which were better than the values required by the Chinese national standard for first class edible sesame oils and oils produced by hexane extraction. No wastewater was discharged during the extraction of white sesame oils by an aqueous salt solution. The protein rich de-oiled meal may be a good material for making protein isolate with high purity (e.g. > 90%). It can also be a nutritious ingredient or raw material for producing many food products.

Abstract
Expanded granular sludge blanket (EGSB) is regarded as a promising reactor to carry out denitrifying sulfide removal (DSR) and elemental sulfur (S0) recovery. Although the recirculation ratio is an essential parameter for EGSB reactors, how it impacts the DSR process remains poorly understood. Here, three lab-scale DSR-EGSB reactors were established with the different recirculation ratios (3:1, 6:1 and 9:1) to evaluate the corresponding variations in pollutant removal, S0 recovery, anaerobic granular sludge (AGS) characteristics and microbial community composition. It was found that an intermediate recirculation ratio (6:1) could facilitate long-term reactor stability. Adequate recirculation ratio could enhance S0 recovery, but an excessive recirculation ratio (9:1) was likely to cause AGS fragmentation and biomass loss. The S0 desorbed more from sludge at higher recirculation ratios, probably due to the enhanced hydraulic disturbance caused by the increased recirculation ratios. At the low recirculation ratio (3:1), S0 accumulation as inorganic suspended solids in AGS led to a decrease in VSS/TSS ratio and mass transfer efficiency. Although typical denitrifying and sulfide-oxidizing bacteria (e.g., Azoarcus, Thauera and Arcobacter) were predominant in all conditions, facultative and heterotrophic functional bacteria (e.g., Azoarcus and Thauera) were more adaptable to higher recirculation ratios than autotrophs (e.g., Arcobacter, Thiobacillus and Vulcanibacillus), which was conducive to the formation of bacterial aggregates to response to the increased recirculation ratio. The study revealed recirculation ratio regulation significantly impacted the DSR-EGSB reactor performance by altering AGS characteristics and microbial community composition, which provides a novel strategy to improve DSR performance and S0 recovery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE This study was to investigate the prevalence and cardiovascular risk factors (CRFs) of asymptomatic intracranial atherosclerotic stenosis (aICAS) amongst middle-aged and older adults living in rural communities in China. METHODS This population-based study included 2019 subjects (aged ≥40 years, 52.3% women) who were free of stroke and living in rural communities in China. From October 2017 to May 2018, data on demographics, CRFs and health conditions were collected through face-to-face interviews, physical examination and laboratory tests. Asymptomatic ICAS was detected through a two-phase procedure: a screening phase with transcranial Doppler ultrasound, followed by a diagnostic phase with magnetic resonance angiography examination. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to analyse CRFs associated with aICAS. RESULTS Of the 2019 participants, aICAS was detected in 153 persons. The overall prevalence of aICAS was 7.6%, and the prevalence of moderate-to-severe aICAS was 5.0%. The multi-adjusted odds ratio (95% confidence interval) of aICAS associated with CRFs was 2.40 (1.56-3.69) for hypertension, 1.91 (1.32-2.76) for high hypersensitive C-reactive protein, 1.68 (1.14-2.49) for diabetes and 1.61 (1.08-2.41) for overweight or obesity. When these four CRFs were aggregated, compared with participants without any of these factors, the multi-adjusted odds ratios (95% confidence interval) of aICAS for persons concurrently having one, two and three or more of these factors were 1.14 (0.52-2.48), 2.91 (1.42-5.99) and 5.51 (2.64-11.50), respectively (P for linear trend <0.001). CONCLUSIONS Asymptomatic ICAS is common amongst rural-dwelling middle-aged and older Chinese people. Hypertension, diabetes, overweight or obesity and high hypersensitive C-reactive protein, especially when coexisting, are strongly associated with aICAS.

Abstract
Directional hearing is crucial for animals depending on acoustic signals to locate a mate. We focused on crickets to explore the reliability of directional information forwarded to the brain by the ascending auditory interneuron AN1, which is crucial for phonotactic behavior. We presented calling song from -45° to +45° in steps of 3° and compared the phonotactic steering of females walking on a trackball with the directional responses of AN1. Forty percent of females showed good steering behavior and changed their walking direction when the speaker passed the body's longitudinal axis. The bilateral latency difference between right and left AN1 responses was small and may not be reliable for auditory steering. In respect to spike count, all AN1 recordings presented significant bilateral differences for angles larger than ±18°, yet 35% showed a mean significant difference of 1-3 action potentials per chirp when the frontal stimulus deviated by 3° from their length axis. For small angles, some females had a very similar AN1 activity forwarded to the brain, but the accuracy of their steering behavior was substantially different. Our results indicate a correlation between directional steering and the response strength of AN1, especially for large angles. The reliable steering of animals at small angles would have to be based on small bilateral differences of AN1 activity, if AN1 is the only source providing directional information. We discuss whether such bilateral response difference at small angles can provide a reliable measure to generate auditory steering commands descending from the brain, as pattern recognition is intensity independent.NEW & NOTEWORTHY The ascending auditory interneuron AN1 has been implicated in cricket auditory steering, but at small acoustic stimulation angles, it does not provide reliable directional information. We conclude that either the small bilateral auditory activity differences of the AN1 neurons are enhanced to generate reliable descending steering commands or, more likely, directional auditory steering is mediated via a thoracic pathway, as indicated by the reactive steering hypothesis.

Abstract
Bcl-2-associated X (Bax) belongs to the Bcl-2 protein family and its pro-apoptotic function has been confirmed in many vertebrate species. However, the functional role of Bax in apoptosis in invertebrates is limited. Here, a Bax homologue (AjBax) in Apostichopus japonicas was cloned and characterized, and its pro-apoptotic function explored. In healthy sea cucumbers, AjBax was expressed in coelomocyte with the highest levels. AjBax mRNA and protein levels were significantly induced in coelomocytes post Vibrio splendidus challenge in vivo and LPS-exposed in vitro. Moreover, siRNA-mediated AjBax knockdown in coelomocyte significantly decreased AjBax mRNA and protein levels as well as the apoptosis levels of coelomocyte. Furthermore, AjBax protein levels and coelomocyte apoptosis levels could be partially recovered to their original levels after supplementation with recombinant AjBax. Our results support that AjBax has a similar function to Bax proteins in vertebrates and that it may serve as a pro-apoptotic regulator in sea cucumbers.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to compare environmental pollution and ecological states of two different areas of the Songhua River areas: near Harbin City and Tongjiang City, located at a distance of about 500 km downstream. The anthropogenic pollution concentrations of heavy metals (HM) were determined. The results showed that concentrations of eight metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn) in the water were in the range of 0.001-0.588 mg/L for Tongjiang and 0.001-0.508 mg/L for Harbin, while that in sediments were in the range of 0.67-1575.37 mg/kg for Tongjiang and 0.07-5617.13 mg/kg for Harbin, respectively. Bivalves from tested sites exposed to environmental pollution exhibited significantly different physiological states. The latter was assessed using the method of physiological loading, based on measuring the recovery time (Trec) of heart rate (HR) after removal of the load. Trec in mussels from Harbin was recorded in the range of 151 to 234 min, while that from Tongjiang was only 115 min. Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn in mollusk soft tissues were also determined for Harbin and Tongjiang, respectively. The metal pollution index (MPI) and bioconcentration factor (BCF) in the mollusks were calculated for each metal. BCF in the mussels from the Tongjiang area was lower than that from the Harbin area. Physiological testing, as well as the concentration of HM in water, and sediment, and also the bioaccumulation of HM in tissue showed that the ecological state of the Tongjiang area was better than that of Harbin. Apparently, after more extensive studies, a methodological approach of assessing the ecological state of water areas, based on physiological state testing of aboriginal mollusks, could be used in the monitoring of pollution effects in water bodies and streams.

Abstract
A mild and atom-economic method was developed for direct and efficient synthesis of quinazolinones through a transition-metal-free aerobic oxidative cascade annulation reaction of widely available o-aminoarylnitriles and alcohols. Air could be employed as an effective oxidant under mild conditions, generating water as the only byproduct. Possibly owing to the "cesium effect", the water-soluble base CsOH was found to be crucial in all key steps of the reaction mechanism. Because a wide range of substrates can be used to prepare substituted quinazolinones without contamination by transition-metal residues, this method may be of interest for application in pharmaceutical synthesis. Possible reaction paths were also proposed according to control reactions.

Abstract
This study aims to explore the mid-long term management of ketogenic diet (KD) for the treatment of refractory epilepsy in children, and carry out an efficacy assessment. The data of epileptic children who received KD in our hospital from January 2011 to August 2012 (basic management plan group, n=57) were retrospectively analyzed. On this basis, epileptic children who received KD from September 2012 to April 2014 (optimized management plan group, n=52) were managed according to the mid-long term management plan. The effective rate of KD at the first, third, sixth and ninth month was 90.4%, 73.1%, 65.4% and 38.5%, respectively, in the optimized management plan group, and 63.2%, 45.6%, 38.6% and 21.1%, respectively, in the basic management plan group, and the differences were statistically significant. The compliance rate of KD at the third, sixth and ninth month was 94.2%, 78.8% and 63.5%, respectively, in the optimized management plan group, and 82.5%, 47.4% and 28.1%, respectively, in the basic management plan group, and the differences were statistically significant. Optimized mid-long term management of KD in children can improve the control rate of epileptic seizures, and the compliance of patients.
