Pushing the Electrochemical Performance Limits of Polypyrrole Toward Stable Microelectronic Devices

Stable Hierarchical Porous Heterostructure Ni2P/NC@CoNi2S4 Fabricated via the NiCo-LDH Template Strategy for High-Performance Supercapacitors

Transition metal phosphide/sulfide (TMP/TMS) heterostructures are attractive supercapacitor electrode materials due to their rapid redox reaction kinetics. However, the limited active sites and weak interfacial interactions result in undesirable electrochemical performance. Herein, based on constructing the NiCo-LDH template on Ni-MOF-derived Ni2P/NC, Ni2P/NC@CoNi2S4 with a porous heterostructure is fabricated by sulfurizing the intermediate and is used for supercapacitors. The exposed Ni sites in the phosphating-obtained Ni2P/NC coordinate with OH- to in situ form an intimate-connected Ni2P/NC@NiCo-LDH, and the CoNi2S4 nanosheets retaining the original cross-linked structure of NiCo-LDH integrate the porous carbon skeleton of Ni2P/NC to yield a hierarchical pore structure with rich electroactive sites. The conducting carbon backbone and the intense electronic interactions at the interface accelerate electron transfer, and the hierarchical pores offer sufficient ion diffusion paths to accelerate redox reactions. These confer Ni2P/NC@CoNi2S4 with a high specific capacitance of 2499 F·g-1 at 1 A·g-1. The NiCo-LDH template producing a tight interfacial connection, significantly enhances the stability of the heterostructure, leading to a 91.89% capacitance retention after 10,000 cycles. Moreover, the fabricated Ni2P/NC@CoNi2S4//NC asymmetric supercapacitor exhibits an excellent energy density of 73.68 Wh kg-1 at a power density of 700 W kg-1, superior to most reported composites of TMPs or TMSs.

Carbon Micro/Nano Machining toward Miniaturized Device: Structural Engineering, Large-Scale Fabrication, and Performance Optimization

With the rapid development of micro/nano machining, there is an elevated demand for high-performance microdevices with high reliability and low cost. Due to their outstanding electrochemical, optical, electrical, and mechanical performance, carbon materials are extensively utilized in constructing microdevices for energy storage, sensing, and optoelectronics. Carbon micro/nano machining is fundamental in carbon-based intelligent microelectronics, multifunctional integrated microsystems, high-reliability portable/wearable consumer electronics, and portable medical diagnostic systems. Despite numerous reviews on carbon materials, a comprehensive overview is lacking that systematically encapsulates the development of high-performance microdevices based on carbon micro/nano structures, from structural design to manufacturing strategies and specific applications. This review focuses on the latest progress in carbon micro/nano machining toward miniaturized device, including structural engineering, large-scale fabrication, and performance optimization. Especially, the review targets an in-depth evaluation of carbon-based micro energy storage devices, microsensors, microactuators, miniaturized photoresponsive and electromagnetic interference shielding devices. Moreover, it highlights the challenges and opportunities in the large-scale manufacturing of carbon-based microdevices, aiming to spark further exciting research directions and application prospectives.

High-Entropy Engineering Reinforced Surface Electronic States and Structural Defects of Hierarchical Metal Oxides@Graphene Fibers toward High-Performance Wearable Supercapacitors

Construction advanced fibers with high Faradic activity and conductivity are effective to realize high energy density with sufficient redox reactions for fiber-based electrochemical supercapacitors (FESCs), yet it is generally at the sacrifice of kinetics and structural stability. Here, a high-entropy doping strategy is proposed to develop high-energy-density FESCs based on high-entropy doped metal oxide@graphene fiber composite (HE-MO@GF). Due to the synergistic participation of multi-metal elements via high-entropy doping, the HE-MO@GF features abundant oxygen vacancies from introducing various low-valence metal ions, lattice distortions, and optimized electronic structure. Consequently, the HE-MO@GF maintains sufficient active sites, a low diffusion barrier, fast adsorption kinetics, improved electronic conductivity, enhanced structural stability, and Faradaic reversibility. Thereinto, HE-MO@GF presents ultra-large areal capacitance (3673.74 mF cm-2) and excellent rate performance (1446.78 mF cm-2 at 30 mA cm-2) in 6 M KOH electrolyte. The HE-MO@GF-based solid-state FESCs also deliver high energy density (132.85 µWh cm-2), good cycle performance (81.05% of capacity retention after 10,000 cycles), and robust tolerance to sweat erosion and multiple washing, which is woven into the textile to power various wearable devices (e.g., watch, badge and luminous glasses). This high-entropy strategy provides significant guidance for designing innovative fiber materials and highlights the development of next-generation wearable energy devices.

Domain-Limited Sub-Nanometer Co Nanoclusters in Defective Nitrogen Doped Carbon Structures for Non-Invasive Drug Monitoring

In this work, sub-nanometer Co clusters anchored on porous nitrogen-doped carbon (C─N─Co NCs) are successfully prepared by high-temperature annealing and pre-fabricated template strategies for non-invasive sensing of clozapine (CLZ) as an efficient substrate adsorption and electrocatalyst. The introduction of Co sub-nanoclusters (Co NCs) provides enhanced electrochemical performance and better substrate adsorption potential compared to porous and nitrogen-doped carbon structures. Combined with ab initio calculations, it is found that the favorable CLZ catalytic performance with C─N─Co NCs is mainly attributed to possessing a more stable CLZ adsorption structure and lower conversion barriers of CLZ to oxidized state CLZ. An electrochemical sensor for CLZ detection is conceptualized with a wide operating range and high sensitivity, with monitoring capabilities validated in a variety of body fluid environments. Based on the developed CLZ sensing system, the CLZ correlation between blood and saliva and the accuracy of the sensor are investigated by the gold standard method and the rat model of drug administration, paving the way for non-invasive drug monitoring. This work provides new insights into the development of efficient electrocatalysts to enable drug therapy and administration monitoring in personalized healthcare systems.

Advances in the Use of Conducting Polymers for Healthcare Monitoring

Conducting polymers (CPs) are an innovative class of materials recognized for their high flexibility and biocompatibility, making them an ideal choice for health monitoring applications that require flexibility. They are active in their design. Advances in fabrication technology allow the incorporation of CPs at various levels, by combining diverse CPs monomers with metal particles, 2D materials, carbon nanomaterials, and copolymers through the process of polymerization and mixing. This method produces materials with unique physicochemical properties and is highly customizable. In particular, the development of CPs with expanded surface area and high conductivity has significantly improved the performance of the sensors, providing high sensitivity and flexibility and expanding the range of available options. However, due to the morphological diversity of new materials and thus the variety of characteristics that can be synthesized by combining CPs and other types of functionalities, choosing the right combination for a sensor application is difficult but becomes important. This review focuses on classifying the role of CP and highlights recent advances in sensor design, especially in the field of healthcare monitoring. It also synthesizes the sensing mechanisms and evaluates the performance of CPs on electrochemical surfaces and in the sensor design. Furthermore, the applications that can be revolutionized by CPs will be discussed in detail.
