Abstract
The cognitive problems are prominent in the context of global aging, and the traditional Mendelian randomization method is not applicable to ordered multi-categorical exposures. Therefore, we aimed to address this issue through the development of a method and to investigate the causal inference of cognitive-related lifestyle factors. The study sample was derived from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey, which included 897 older adults aged 65 + . This study used genome-wide association analysis to screen genetic loci as instrumental variables and innovatively combined maximum likelihood estimation to infer causal associations between ordered multi-categorical exposures (diet, exercise, etc.) and continuous outcomes (cognitive level). The causal inference method for ordered multi-categorical exposures developed in this study was simple, easy to implement, and able to effectively and reliably discover the potential causal associations between variables. Through this method, we found a potential positive causal association between exercise status and cognitive level in Chinese older adults ( β ^ = 1.883, 95%CI 0.182-3.512), in which there was no horizontal pleiotropy (p = 0.370). The study provided a causal inference method applicable to ordered multi-categorical exposures, that addressed the limitations of the traditional Mendelian randomization method.

Abstract
Based on the complexity of cognitive-related influences and the specificity of Chinese liquor culture, this study aimed to explore the associations and potential interactions between demographic characteristics, alcohol consumption, life and atmospheric environment, and cognitive function in seniors through a comprehensive analysis, in order to provide evidence support and feasible recommendations. The study sample was selected from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey, which included 40,583 seniors aged 65-115 years. Data analysis and processing were performed by R 4.0.4. The relationship between the factors and cognition was modeled and analyzed by generalized additive model, and the interaction was explored by combining the ANOVA. The generalized additive model confirmed that alcohol consumption was detrimental to the cognitive status of older adults, especially for liquor (≥ 38°) and beer. The higher the average daily alcohol consumption, the greater the impairment. SO2 and PM2.5 showed the same negative effects. In contrast, life environment factors such as good education, balanced diet, and positive activity participation had a positive effect on cognition in seniors. In addition, interactions between alcohol consumption and average daily alcohol consumption, frequency of vegetable and meat intake, and between open-air activities, and air pollution were also confirmed. Poor lifestyle choices such as alcohol consumption, unbalanced diet, lower activity participation, and air pollution deteriorate cognitive function in seniors. It is recommended that the elderly population should avoid alcohol consumption, maintain a balanced diet, and be physically active. Attention should also be paid to the effects of air quality.

Abstract
Purpose The purpose of this article is to promote the viewpoint that speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are well positioned to actively encourage individuals with cognitive-communication disorders following acquired brain injury (ABI) to engage in ongoing, long-term, cognitive exercise post-therapy discharge. Method This viewpoint article draws on evidence from the well-researched area of physical exercise, reports findings of early-stage research in the much less studied area of cognitive exercise, and highlights relevant aspects of motivational theory informing exercise participation. Informed by these, an evidence-supported model of cognitive exercise engagement is offered to inform ABI-targeted cognitive wellness empowerment efforts, and a case study illustrates clinical application of the model. Conclusions Exercise provides an opportunity to sustain or improve long-term health, function, and quality of life outcomes. It is within SLP scope of practice to collaborate with family members and other caregivers to empower individuals post-ABI, especially those with decreased self-management skills, to engage in long-term computerized and noncomputerized cognitive exercise following SLP therapy discharge. Ongoing research will further inform the evidence supporting the scholarly opinion presented in this viewpoint.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Regular physical activity (PA) is potentially beneficial for age-related cognitive decline. Although moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) is mostly advised, older adults with chronic illnesses might benefit more from light physical activity (LPA), as they suffer from mobility problems, pain, and fatigue, limiting high-intensity PA. Therefore, the longitudinal association between change in LPA and MVPA and the change in cognitive functioning (CF) is investigated in older adults with chronic illnesses. METHODS In total 432 older adults (mean age 73.7 [±6.1] years; 46.8% female) with at least one chronic illness participated in this longitudinal observational study. Longitudinal associations between accelerometer-assessed change in PA (LPA and MVPA) and change in CF, measured with an objective validated neuropsychological test battery, were tested with multivariate linear regressions. RESULTS An increase in LPA between baseline and 6 months follow-up was significantly associated with improved short-term verbal memory and inhibition over the first 6 months. In addition, the change score in LPA over the first 6 months was predictive for the change score in short-term verbal memory over 12 months. Furthermore, an increase in MVPA between baseline and 6 months follow-up was significantly associated with a decrease in longer-term verbal memory scores over the same six-month period. CONCLUSIONS For older adults with chronic illnesses who may experience difficulties in being sufficiently active, an increase in LPA is probably more achievable than an increase in MVPA. In addition, an increase in LPA enhances CF more than an increase in MVPA does. TRIAL REGISTRATION Netherlands Trial Register NL6005 ; Date of Registration 21-03-2017.

Abstract
Aging is associated with cognitive decline. Importantly cognition and cerebral health is enhanced with interventions like cognitive (CT) and exercise training (ET). However, effects of CT and ET interventions on brain magnetic resonance imaging outcomes have never been compared systematically. Here, the primary objective was to critically and systematically compare CT to ET in healthy older adults on brain MRI outcomes. A total of 38 studies were included in the final review. Although results were mixed, patterns were identified: CT showed improvements in white matter microstructure, while ET demonstrated macrostructural enhancements, and both demonstrated changes to task-based BOLD signal changes. Importantly, beneficial effects for cognitive and cerebral outcomes were observed by almost all, regardless of intervention type. Overall, it is suggested that future work include more than one MRI outcome, and report all results including null. To better understand the MRI changes associated with CT or ET, more studies explicitly comparing interventions within the same domain (i.e. resistance vs. aerobic) and between domains (i.e. CT vs. ET) are needed.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Neurodegeneration is a biproduct of aging that results in concomitant cognitive decline. Physical exercise is an emerging intervention to improve brain health. The underlying neural mechanisms linking exercise to neurodegeneration, however, are unclear. Functional brain network connectivity (FBNC) refers to neural regions that are anatomically separate but temporally synched in functional signalling. FBNC can be measured using functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) and is affected by neurodegeneration. METHODS We conducted a systematic review using PubMed and EMBASE to assess the effect of physical exercise on FBNC in older adults with and without cognitive impairment. RESULTS Our search yielded 1474 articles; after exclusion, 13 were included in the final review, 8 of which focused on cognitively healthy older adults. 10 studies demonstrated an increase in FBNC post-exercise intervention, while 11 studies showed improvements in secondary outcomes (cognitive and/or physical performance). One study showed significant correlations between FBNC and cognitive performance measures that significantly improved post-intervention. DISCUSSION We found evidence that physical exercise increases FBNC. When assessing the association between FBNC with physical and cognitive functioning, careful consideration must be given to variability in exercise parameters, neural regions of interest and networks examined, and heterogeneity in methodological approaches.
