Thiophene-Based Organic Semiconductors

Exploring the effects of mono-bromination on hole-electron transport and distribution in dibenzofuran and dibenzothiophene isomers: a first-principles study

CONTEXT

This study delves into hole-electron transport and distribution properties inherent in mono-brominated dibenzofuran (DBF) and dibenzothiophene (DBT) isomers. As determined by frontier molecular orbitals, all brominated structures have narrower bandgaps than their primary structures. The TD-DFT calculation showed that 2BDBT had the highest absorption wavelength of all molecules at 315.35 nm. Notably, the study unveils remarkably low electron and hole reorganization energies due to bromine substitution in DBF and DBT molecules. Specifically, the 4BDBF has the lowest hole reorganization energy of all DBF configurations, 0.229 eV. In addition, 3BDBF has 0.226 eV less electron reorganization energy than all other molecules. Compared to DBT, 3BDBT has the lowest electron reorganization energy of 0.254 eV. Overall, this research sheds significant light on the fundamental electronic and hole transport characteristics of bromine-substituted DBF and DBT isomers, highlighting their promising role in polymer design as donors/acceptors for advanced organic electronic applications.

METHODS

Molecular structures were optimized using Density Functional Theory (DFT) B3LYP/6-311 +  + G (d, p) level of theory, and the study further elucidates these molecules' energy levels and absorption spectra through Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory TD-DFT; these calculations were performed using Gaussian 09W software package. The key parameters such as reorganization energies, Electron Localization Function map, Laplacian Bond Order, and NCI-RDG were meticulously examined for the molecules with the results of DFT calculations were analyzed and displayed by utilizing the software packages VMD 1.9.4 and Multiwfn 3.8, aiming to comprehend their charge transport and distribution properties.

Understanding the effects of sulfur di-oxidation and side chain engineering on absorption and fluorescence of oligothiophene: A theoretical study

Oligothiophene and its derivatives have broad applications in organic electronics because of its stability, easy functionalization, and broad color adjustability, and excellent charge carrier mobility. However, the effects of sulfur di-oxidation and side alkyl chains on the absorption and fluorescence of oligothiophene are still not well understood. In this article, we have applied density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) to study a series of quinquethiophene compounds functionalized with S,S-dioxide and side alkyl chains, which were experimentally synthesized. Through benchmark calculations, we have found a reliable computational method, and successfully reproduced experimental UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence emission spectra well. Furthermore, the calculated reorganization energy of these molecules could explain the energy differences between absorption and emission spectra. Last but not lease, we also have calculated the fluorescence quantum yield efficiency (Фfl) of two compounds with good planarity in this series, and the trend of calculated values is consistent with experiment. Our work gives an insight to the effects of sulfur di-oxidation and side chain engineering on absorption and fluorescence of oligothiophene.

Symmetrical and Asymmetrical Thiophene-Coumarin-Based Organic Semiconductors

Organic semiconductors are a valuable material class for optoelectronic applications due to their electronic and optical properties. Four new symmetric and asymmetric thiophene-coumarin derivatives were designed and synthesized via Pd-catalyzed Suzuki and Stille Cross-Coupling reactions. Single crystals of all synthesized thiophene-coumarin derivatives were obtained, and π···π interactions were observed among them. The π···π interactions were supported by UV-vis, transmission electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy analyses. The photophysical and electrochemical properties of the coumarins were investigated and supported by density functional theory studies. Fluorescence quantum yields were recorded between 36 and 66%. Moreover, mega Stokes shifts (175 nm or 8920 cm-1) were observed in these new chromophore dyes. The emission and absorption colors of the thiophene-coumarin compounds differed between their solution and film forms. Electrochemically, the highest occupied molecular orbital levels of the coumarins increased with the 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene group, leading to a narrowing of the band gap, while the phenyl bridge weakened the donor-acceptor interaction, expanding the band gap.

A Local Diabatisation Method for Two-State Adiabatic Conical Intersections

A methodology to locally characterize conical intersections (CIs) between two adiabatic electronic states for which no nonadiabatic coupling (NAC) vectors are available is presented. Based on the Hessian and gradient at the CI, the branching space coordinates are identified. The potential energy surface around the CI in the branching space is expressed in the diabatic representation, from which the NAC vectors can be calculated in a wave-function-free, energy-based approach. To demonstrate the universality of the developed methodology, the minimum-energy CI (MECI) between the first (S1) and second (S2) singlet excited states of formamide is investigated at the state-averaged complete active space self-consistent field (SA-CASSCF) and extended multistate complete active space second-order perturbation theory (XMS-CASPT2) levels of theory. In addition, the asymmetrical MECI between the ground state (S0) and S1 of cyclopropanone is evaluated using SA-CASSCF, as well as (ME)CIs between the S1 and S2 states of benzene using SA-CASSCF and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT). Finally, a CI between the S1 and S2 excited states of thiophene was analyzed using TDDFT.

N-Vinylthio Phthalimides (N-VTPs): Modular Reagents for Vinylthio AIEgen Transfer

Novel sulfur reagents N-vinylthio phthalimides (N-VTPs) have been employed as modular reagents for vinylthiolation, enabling the construction of aggregation-induced emission (AIE)-active tetraaryldivinyl sulfides (TADVSs) and diarylvinyl sulfides (DAVSs). Notably, TADVSs with sulfur insertion to ethene stators are reported as AIE luminogens (AIEgens) for the first time, and the corresponding photophysical properties and aggregated confirmation have been detailed for the demonstration of the AIE effect. A water-soluble TADVS with a quinolinium salt was prepared for cell imaging.

Investigation of the Origin of High Photoluminescence Quantum Yield in Thienyl-S,S-dioxide AIEgens Oligomers by Temperature Dependent Optical Spectroscopy

The development of organic molecules showing high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) in solid state is a fundamental step for the implementation of efficient light emitting devices. In this work the origin of the high PLQY of two trimers and two pentamers having one central thiophene-S,S-dioxide unit and two and four lateral thiophene or phenyl groups, respectively, is investigated by temperature dependent photoluminescence and time resolved photoluminescence measurements. The experimental results demonstrate that the molecules with lateral phenyl rings show higher PLQY due to a weaker coupling with intramolecular vibrations-related to variations in the radiative and non-radiative decay rates-and indicate different molecular rigidity as the main factors affecting the PLQY of this class of molecules.

Palladium-catalyzed asymmetric allenylic alkylation: construction of multiple chiral thiochromanone derivatives

The development of a new strategy for the construction of chiral cyclic sulfide-containing multiple stereogenic centers is highly desirable. Herein, by the combination of base-promoted retro-sulfa-Michael addition and palladium-catalyzed asymmetric allenylic alkylation, the streamlined synthesis of chiral thiochromanones containing two central chiralities (including a quaternary stereogenic center) and an axial chirality (allene unit) was successfully realized with up to 98% yield, 49.0 : 1 dr and >99% ee.

Solid-state red-emissive (cyano)vinylene heteroaromatics via Pd-catalysed C-H homocoupling

Thiophene-based π-conjugated systems are important materials for organic electronics; thus, their synthesis is of topical interest. We report fluorescent thiophene/furan-based vinylene and cyanovinylene systems via Pd-catalysed homocoupling [Pd(OAc)₂, pivalic acid, KOAc, DMAc, 140 °C]. The methodology is versatile and allows the development of a variety of π-conjugated systems without the need for pre-functionalized building units. The reaction tolerates electron-rich, electron-deficient and large π-conjugated substrates. The developed compounds absorb in the visible region (400-515 nm) and emit green to orange fluorescence in the solution state (510-600 nm). Most importantly, the compounds exhibit strong aggregation-induced emission (AIE) in the NIR region (λ_em = 650 nm), with quantum yields reaching up to 10%. Steric hindrance imparted by vinylene/cyanovinylene units is responsible for the strong solid-state luminescence. DFT-optimized structures reveal an apparent twist of 20-40° in the molecular backbone of the compounds, supporting the AIE behaviour of the compounds.

Polymer-Unit Fingerprint (PUFp): An Accessible Expression of Polymer Organic Semiconductors for Machine Learning

High-performance organic semiconductors (OSCs) can be designed based on the identification of functional units and their role in the material properties. Herein, we present a polymer-unit fingerprint (PUFp) generation framework, "Python-based polymer-unit-recognition script" (PURS), to identify the subunits "polymer unit" in the polymer and generate polymer-unit fingerprint (PUFp). Using 678 collected OSC data, machine learning (ML) models can be used to determine structure-mobility relationships by using PUFp as a structural input, and the classification accuracy reaches 85.2%. A polymer-unit library consisting of 445 units is constructed, and the key polymer units affecting the mobility of OSCs are identified. By investigating the combinations of polymer units with mobility performance, a scheme for designing OSCs by combining ML approaches and PUFp information is proposed. This scheme not only passively predicts OSC mobility but also actively provides structural guidance for high-mobility OSC material design. The proposed scheme demonstrates the ability to screen materials through pre-evaluation and classification ML steps and is an alternative methodology for applying ML in high-mobility OSC discovery.

Visible-light-induced reactions of methylenecyclopropanes (MCPs)

Diverse, visible-light-induced transformations of methylenecyclopropanes (MCPs) have been reported in recent years, attracting significant attention from synthetic chemists. As readily accessible strained molecules, MCPs have sufficient reactivity to selectively generate different target products, through reactions with various radical species upon visible-light irradiation under regulated reaction conditions. These transformations can be classified into three subcategories of reaction pathway, forming ring-opened products, cyclopropane derivatives, and alkynes. These products include pharmaceutical intermediates and polycyclic/heterocyclic compounds that are challenging to obtain using traditional methods. This review summarizes the recent advancements in this field.

Computational Study of New Small Molecules based Thiophene as Donor Materials for Bulk Heterojunction Photovoltaic Cells

In this research work, we study the structural, optical, electronic, and photovoltaic properties of eight thiophene-based π-conjugated organic molecules using quantum methods namely time-dependent density functional theory. In particular, we identify the relationships between the chemical structure of these π-conjugated organic molecules and their optoelectronic properties. Moreover, we calculate and compare the highest energy occupied molecular orbital and lowest energy unoccupied molecular orbital energy levels of these compounds which act as donor with the ones of the acceptorphenyl-C₆₁-butyric acid methyl ester. As a result, the investigated molecules show a low band gap, suitable open-circuit voltage and appropriate alignment energy level between the engineered donor molecules and the acceptor phenyl-C₆₁-butyric acid methyl ester. This theoretical study shows that these new molecules have potential properties for the development of organic heterojunction photovoltaic cells.

Energy-dependent timescales in the dissociation of diiodothiophene dication

Photodissociation molecular dynamics of gas-phase 2,5-diiodothiophene molecules was studied in an electron-energy-resolved electron-multi-ion coincidence experiment performed at the FinEstBeAMS beamline of MAX IV synchrotron. Following the photoionization of the iodine 4d subshell and the Auger decay, the dissociation landscape of the molecular dication was investigated as a function of the Auger electron energy. Concentrating on an major dissociation pathway, C₄H₂I₂S²⁺ → C₄H₂S⁺ + I⁺ + I, and accessing the timescales of the process via ion momentum correlation analysis, it was revealed how this three-body process changes depending on the available internal energy. Using a generalized secondary dissociation model, the process was shown to evolve from secondary dissociation regime towards concerted dissociation as the available energy increased, with the secondary dissociation time constant changing from 1.5 ps to 129 fs. The experimental results were compared with simulations using a stochastic charge-hopping molecular mechanics model. It represented the observed trend and also gave a fair quantitative agreement with the experiment.

Novel red light-emitting two-photon absorption compounds with large Stokes shifts for living cell imaging

Three novel donor-π-acceptor two-photon absorption compounds (1PZPy, 2PZIm, 3CZPy) bearing the 10-butyl-10H-phenothiazine (9-butyl-9H-carbazole) donor, the pyridinium (benzimidazolium) acceptor, and the 2,5-divinylthiophene π-bridge were synthesized and fully characterized by ¹H NMR, ¹³C NMR, FT-IR, and HRMS. The linear and nonlinear photophysical properties were systematically investigated. Their absorption properties show a strong solvent dependence, while the emission properties are nearly independent of solvent polarity. All of them possess large Stokes shifts (Δλ=149-190 nm in H₂O). 1PZPy and 3CZPy exhibit red fluorescence emission centered at about 635 and 660 nm, respectively. The two-photon absorption cross-sections measured by the open aperture Z-scan technique are determined to be 486 (1PZPy), 601 (2PZIm), and 753 GM (3CZPy) in DMF. The density functional theory calculations were further carried out to reveal their electronic structures. All the target compounds are verified to have low cytotoxicity in the working solution and good capability for one- and two-photon excitation fluorescence imaging, suggesting their potential application in bioimaging. Moreover, they show the organelle targeting ability in living cells with the high Pearson's coefficients above 0.94 for the endoplasmic reticulum.

Ni-catalyzed C-S bond construction and cleavage

Sulfur-containing compounds have attracted considerable interest due to their wide-ranging applications in pharmaceuticals, agriculture, natural products, and organic materials. The development of efficient and rapid methods for the construction and transformation of sulfur-containing compounds is of great importance. Since nickel is inexpensive and has a variety of valence states, strong nucleophilicity and low energy barriers for oxidative addition, the construction and transformation of sulfur-containing compounds by nickel-catalyzed cross-coupling have become important strategies. In addition, sulfur-containing compounds have also been playing increasingly important roles in the field of cross-coupling due to their thermodynamically stable but dynamic activity. This review will focus on nickel-catalyzed construction and transformation of various sulfide-containing compounds, such as sulfides, disulfides, and hypervalent sulfur-containing compounds.

A Novel Donor-Acceptor Thiophene-Containing Oligomer Comprising Dibenzothiophene-S,S-dioxide Units for Solution-Processable Organic Field Effect Transistor

A π-conjugated thiophene-containing oligomer with a D-A-D-A-D (D: donor, A: acceptor) architecture, namely, 2,6-bis{[4-(7-n-hexylthiophen-2-yl)thiophen-2-yl]-(dibenzothiophene-5,5-dioxide-3,3΄-diyl)}-bis((2-ethyl-hexyl)oxy)benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b’]dithiophen (BDT(DBTOTTH)₂), was synthesized by Stille coupling reactions. There are obvious shifts in the Ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) and photoluminescence (PL) spectra of the thin film relative to its solution, indicating the existence of the π-π stacking in the solid state of the oligomer BDT(DBTOTTH)₂. The optical band gap of the oligomer determined from its absorption onset in UV-Vis spectra is 2.25 eV. It agrees with the value of 2.29 eV determined from the cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurement. Its highest occupied and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (HOMO/LUMO) energy levels, which were calculated from its onset of oxidation and reduction waves in CV curve, are −5.51 and −3.22 eV, respectively. The oligomer is a P-type semiconductor material with a good thermal stability and solubility, which can be used to fabricate organic field effect transistors (OFETs) by the spin coating technique. The OFET with n-octadecanylltrichlorosilane (OTS)-modified SiO₂ dielectric layer exhibited a mobility of 1.6 × 10⁻³ cm²/Vs.

Fluorescent small molecules with alternating triarylamine-substituted selenophenothiophene and triarylborane: synthesis, photophysical properties and anion sensing studies

Two novel D-π-A fluorophores based on selenopheno[3,2-b]thiophene, possessing triphenylamine and 4,4'-dimethoxytriphenylamine units as donors and dimesitylborane as an acceptor, linked through a π-conjugated thiophene spacer (BTPAST and BOMeTPAST, respectively) were synthesized. Their photophysical properties were investigated in both solution and the state of aggregation and compared to those of their corresponding donor parts, having no dimesitylborane units (TPAST and OMeTPAST). All the compounds displayed large Stokes shifts between 100 and 140 nm with positive solvatochromism in solvents having different polarities. While BTPAST displayed both aggregation induced emission (AIE) and twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) characteristics, the others preponderated with TICT effects. The sensing abilities of BTPAST and BOMeTPAST towards different anions were studied. Both exhibited chromogenic and fluorogenic responses to small anions such as fluoride and cyanide, for which the detection limits were found to be 0.12 and 2.43 ppm with BTPAST and 0.59 and 0.92 ppm with BOMeTPAST, respectively. These results provide guidance for the development of novel fused selenophenothiophene sensors in the field of anion sensing.

The Bifurcated σ-Hole···σ-Hole Stacking Interactions

The bifurcated σ-hole···σ-hole stacking interactions between organosulfur molecules, which are key components of organic optical and electronic materials, were investigated by using a combined method of the Cambridge Structural Database search and quantum chemical calculation. Due to the geometric constraints, the binding energy of one bifurcated σ-hole···σ-hole stacking interaction is in general smaller than the sum of the binding energies of two free monofurcated σ-hole···σ-hole stacking interactions. The bifurcated σ-hole···σ-hole stacking interactions are still of the dispersion-dominated noncovalent interactions. However, in contrast to the linear monofurcated σ-hole···σ-hole stacking interaction, the contribution of the electrostatic energy to the total attractive interaction energy increases significantly and the dispersion component of the total attractive interaction energy decreases significantly for the bifurcated σ-hole···σ-hole stacking interaction. Another important finding of this study is that the low-cost spin-component scaled zeroth-order symmetry-adapted perturbation theory performs perfectly in the study of the bifurcated σ-hole···σ-hole stacking interactions. This work will provide valuable information for the design and synthesis of novel organic optical and electronic materials.

Triphenylamine/4,4'-Dimethoxytriphenylamine-Functionalized Thieno[3,2-b]thiophene Fluorophores with a High Quantum Efficiency: Synthesis and Photophysical Properties

A wide series of 10 new triphenylamine (TPA)/4,4'-dimethoxytriphenylamine (TPA(OMe)₂)-functionalized thieno[3,2-b]thiophene (TT) fluorophores, 4a-e and 5a-e, bearing different electron-donating and electron-withdrawing substituents (-PhCN, -PhF, -PhOMe, -Ph, and -C₆H₁₃) at the terminal thienothiophene units were designed and synthesized by the Suzuki coupling reaction. Their optical and electrochemical properties were investigated by experimental and computational studies. Solid-state fluorescent quantum yields were recorded to be from 20 to 69%, and the maximum solution-state quantum efficiency reached 97%. Moreover, the photophysical characterization of the novel chromophores demonstrated a significant Stokes shift, reaching 179 nm with a bathochromic shift. They exhibited tuning color emission from orange to dark blue in solution and showed fluorescence lifetime reaching 4.70 ns. The relationship between triphenylamine (TPA)/4,4'-dimethoxytriphenylamine (TPA(OMe)₂)-derived triarylamines and different functional groups on thieno[3,2-b] thiophene units was discussed.

Optical Spectra of Oligofurans: A Theoretical Approach to the Transition Energies, Reorganization Energies, and the Vibronic Activity

There is experimental evidence of high vibronic activity that accompanies the allowed transition between the ground state and the lowest electronic singlet excited state of oligofurans that contain two, three, and four furan rings. The absorption and emission spectra of the three lowest oligofurans measured at liquid nitrogen temperature show distinct fine structures that are reproduced using the projection-based model of vibronic coupling (with Dushinsky rotation included) parameterized utilizing either Density Functional Theory (DFT, with several different exchange-correlation functionals) or ab initio (CC2) quantum chemistry calculations. Using as a reference the experimental data concerning the electronic absorption and fluorescence for the eight lowest oligofurans, we first analyzed the performance of the exchange-correlation functionals for the electronic transition energies and the reorganization energies. Subsequently, we used the best functionals alongside with the CC2 method to explore how the reorganization energies are distributed among the totally symmetric vibrations, identify the normal modes that dominate in the fine structures present in the absorption and emission bands, and trace their evolution with the increasing number of rings in the oligofuran series. Confrontation of the simulated spectra with the experiment allows for the verification of the performance of the selected DFT functionals and the CC2 method.

Facile Synthesis of Thienoacenes via Transition-Metal-Free Ladderization

Herein, we report a facile transition-metal-free approach to sulfur-containing heteroacenes from fluorinated oligophenylenes. Unlike most existing methods, the presented approach is not restricted to simple dibenzothiophene derivatives and thus appears to be a useful tool for the synthesis of extended sulfur-containing heteroacenes. The incorporation of sulfur is unambiguously preprogrammed via the positions of fluorines in the precursors, allowing the selective synthesis of extended thienoacenes with up to 96% yield.

Generation of Heteroaryl-Substituted Sulfonyl Compounds from Sulfur Dioxide via Remote Heteroaryl ipso-Migration

The generation of heteroaryl-substituted sulfonyl compounds via a catalyst-, base-, and additive-free three-component reaction of heteroaryl-substituted tertiary alcohols, aryldiazonium tetrafluoroborates, and DABCO·(SO₂)₂ under mild conditions is developed. Various functional groups are tolerated well in this transformation, and a broad substrate scope is demonstrated. A preliminary mechanistic investigation shows that this reaction undergoes a radical process, including the insertion of sulfur dioxide, sulfonyl radical addition to unactivated alkene, and remote heteroaryl ipso-migration.

Development of Dithieno[3,2-b:2′,3′-d]thiophene (DTT) Derivatives as Solution-Processable Small Molecular Semiconductors for Organic Thin Film Transistors

Novel solution-processable dithieno[3,2-d:2′,3′-d]thiophene (DTT) derivatives with alkylated thiophene or alkyl chain substituents, 2,6-bis(5-octylthiophen-2-yl)dithieno[3,2-b:2′,3′-d]thiophene (compound 1), 2,6-bis(5-(2-ethylhexyl)thiophen-2-yl)dithieno[3,2-b:2′,3′-d]thiophene (compound 2), and 2,6-dioctyldithieno[3,2-b:2′,3′-d]thiophene (compound 3), have been synthesized and employed as small molecular organic semiconductors for organic field-effect transistors (OFETs). All compounds exhibited good thermal stability over 290 °C, while different side groups of DTT compounds afforded different melting temperatures. The molecular orbital energy levels were experimentally and theoretically calculated, and their trend was almost the same. The developed compounds were employed as active layers for top-contact/bottom-gate OFETs with average charge carrier mobility as high as 0.10 cm2/Vs and current on/off ratio > 107 in ambient atmosphere. Notably, DTT derivative with linear alkyl chain (-octyl) substituents showed the best device performance. High device performance could be attributed to the large grains and continuous surface coverages as well as high film texture of the corresponding semiconductor films.

Reducing Energy Loss in Organic Solar Cells by Changing the Central Metal in Metalloporphyrins

The effect of central donor core on the properties of A-π-D-π-A donors, where D is a porphyrin macrocycle, cyclopenta[2,1-b:3,4-b']dithiophene is the π bridge, and A is a dicyanorhodanine terminal unit, was investigated for the fabrication of the organic solar cells (OSCs), along [6,6]-phenyl-C71-butyric acid methyl ester (PC₇₁ BM) as electron acceptor. A new molecule consisting of Ni-porphyrin central donor core (VC9) showed deep HOMO energy level and OSCs based on optimized VC9:PC₇₁ BM realized overall power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 10.66 % [short-circuit current density (J_SC )=15.48 mA/cm² , fill factor (FF)=0.65] with high open circuit voltage (V_OC ) of 1.06 V and very low energy loss of 0.49 eV, whereas the Zn-porphyrin analogue VC8:PC₇₁ BM showed PCE of 9.69 % with V_OC of 0.89 V, J_SC of 16.25 mA/cm² and FF of 0.67. Although the OSCs based on VC8 showed higher J_SC in comparison to VC9, originating from the broader absorption profile of VC8 that led to more exciton generation, the higher value of PCE of VC9 is owing to the higher V_OC and reduced energy loss.

Charge-transfer dynamics in van der Waals heterojunctions formed by thiophene-based semiconductor polymers and exfoliated franckeite investigated from resonantly core-excited electrons

Organic/inorganic van der Waals heterojunctions formed by a combination of 2D materials with semiconductor polymer films enable the fabrication of new device architectures that are interesting for electronic and optoelectronic applications. Here, we investigated the charge-transfer dynamics at the interface between 2D layered franckeite (Fr) and two thiophene-based conjugated polymers (PFO-DBT and P3HT) from the resonantly core-excited electron. The unoccupied electronic states of PFO-DBT/Fr and P3HT/Fr heterojunctions were studied using near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) and resonant Auger (RAS) synchrotron-based spectroscopies. We found evidence of ultrafast (subfemtosecond charge-transfer times) interfacial electron delocalization pathways from specific electronic states. For the interface between the PFO-DBT polymer and exfoliated franckeite, the most efficient interfacial electron delocalization pathways were found through π*(S-N) and π*(S-C) electronic states corresponding to the benzothiadiazole and thiophene units. On the other hand, for the P3HT polymer, we found that electrons excited to π-π* and S1s-π*(C-C) electronic states of the P3HT polymer are the most affected by the presence of exfoliated franckeite and consequently are the main interfacial electron-transfer pathways in this heterojunction. Our results have important implications in understanding how ultrafast electron delocalization is taking place in organic/inorganic van der Waals heterojunctions, which is relevant information in designing new devices involving these systems.

Concise synthesis of 3-alkylthieno[3,2-b]thiophenes; building blocks for organic electronic and optoelectronic materials

Four step synthesis of 3-alkylthieno[3,2-b]thiophenes in the literature was reduced to two steps in good yields, through the preparation of the mono ketone, i.e. 1-(thiophene-3-ylthio)alkan-2-one, from 3-bromothiophene and ring formation reaction. This convenient method provides an easy access with good yields to the preparation of 3-alkylthieno[3,2-b]thiophenes, which are important materials for organic electronic and optoelectronic applications. SEM, AFM and contact angle (CA) analyses of their electropolymers on indium tin oxide (ITO) indicated that as the alkyl chains became longer, the polymers provide a more hydrophobic layer with CA up to 107°.
