Abstract
Food safety is a global concern due to the risk posed by microbial pathogens, toxins and food deterioration. Hence, materials with antibacterial and antioxidant properties have been widely studied for their packaging application to ensure food safety. The current study has been designed to fabricate the chitosan/starch-based film with cinnamon essential oil (CEO) and cellulose nanofibers for active packaging. The nanocomposite films developed in this study were characterized by using UV-Vis Spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectroscopy (GC-MS). The biodegradability, hydrodynamic, mechanical, antioxidant and antibacterial properties of the films were also evaluated. From the results, the addition of CEO and cellulose nanofibers was found to enhance the antimicrobial and material properties of the film. FE-SEM analysis has also revealed a rough and porous surface morphology for the developed nanocomposite film. FT-IR analysis further demonstrated the molecular interactions among the various components used for the preparation of the film. The film has also been shown to have antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Furthermore, the film was found to reduce the bacterial load of the stored beef meat when used as a packaging material. The study hence provides valuable insights into the development of chitosan/starch-based films incorporated with CEO and cellulose nanofibers for active food packaging applications. This is due to its excellent antimicrobial and physicochemical properties. Hence, the nanocomposite film developed in the study can be considered to have promising applications in the food packaging industry.

Abstract
Hops' (Humulus lupulus L.) phytochemicals are well known for their bioactivity. In the present study, the functional properties of hop extract rich in β-acids, as potassium-salts structures (KBA), were investigated to develop a sustainable active food packaging. Polylactic acid (PLA)-based sheets were incorporated with increasing concentrations of hop extract (0.1-5 % w/w in terms of KBA) and characterized through performance and bioactive properties. KBA-added sheets presented decreased crystallinity and affected mechanical and thermal properties, especially with higher KBA amounts. The sheets' surface hydrophobicity gradually decreased by KBA-extract addition, while the water vapor permeability was not affected. A Fickian diffuse behavior and a better fit to application in fatty foods were observed during release tests. UV-blocking and antioxidant properties were improved by KBA incorporation. Furthermore, results from antibacterial assays revealed great susceptibility of Staphylococcus aureus and Listeria monocytogenes towards sheets added with 5 % of KBA. Moreover, the atomic force microscopy (AFM) observations revealed that KBA led to strong effects on the cell membranes of both bacteria, including disruption of membrane integrity and cell death. Therefore, this study is a sign of great prospects of hop β-acids use, as KBA compound, in the production of sustainable active packaging for safe food shelf-life extension.

Abstract
Linseed oil-based composite films were prepared with cinnamaldehyde (Cin) using a modified clay (organoclay) through in situ polymerization, which is the result of the interaction between Cin and organoclay. The incorporation of organoclay reduces the polymer chain's mobility and, therefore, increases the thermal stability of the composite films. In some experimental conditions, the clay is located both inside and on the surface of the film, thus, affecting the mechanical and thermal properties as well as the surface properties of the composite films. The incorporation of organoclay decreases the water contact angle of the composite film by more than 15%, whatever the amount of cinnamaldehyde. However, the incorporation of cinnamaldehyde has the opposite effect on film surface properties. Indeed, for the water vapor permeability (WVP), the effect of cinnamaldehyde on the film barrier properties is much higher in the presence of organoclay. The incorporation of hydrophobic compounds into the polymer films reduces the water content, which acts as a plasticizer and, therefore, decreases the WVP by more than 17%. Linseed oil has a natural antioxidant activity (~97%) due to the higher content of unsaturated fatty acids, and this activity increased with the amount of organoclay and cinnamaldehyde.

Abstract
New bio-composite nanofibers composed of polyethylene oxide (PEO)/silk fibroin (SF)/barium titanate (BaTiO3) are introduced in this study. The SF solution was added to the PEO solution to form a PEO/SF blend with different weight percentages (5, 10, 15, 20 wt.%). The PEO/15 wt.% SF blend was selected to continue the experimental plan based on the optimum nanofiber morphology. Different wt.% of BaTiO3 particles (0.2, 0.4, 0.8, 1 wt.%) were added to the PEO/15 wt.% SF blend solution, and the suspensions obtained were introduced to an electrospinning device. The fabricated tissue was characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The zeta potential of the solution and the piezoelectric performance of the fabricated tissue were characterized. A newly designed pizoTester was used to investigate piezoelectric properties. The results showed that a well-organized, smooth PEO/15 wt.% SF/0.2 wt.% BaTiO3 nanofiber composite with low bead contents was obtained. Improved properties and electrical coupling were achieved in the newly introduced material. Electrospun PEO/15 wt.% SF/0.2 wt.% BaTiO3 mats increased the output voltage (1150 mV) compared to pristine PEO and PEO/SF composite fibers (410 and 290 mV, respectively) upon applying 20 N force at 5 Hz frequency. The observed enhancement in piezoelectric properties suggests that the prepared composite could be a promising material in cardiac tissue engineering (CTE).

Abstract
In this research, the extraction with supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) and the subsequent impregnation of the extracted bioactive compounds from Zataria multiflora Boiss (Z. multiflora) into polylactic acid (PLA) films was investigated. The effects of temperature (318 and 338 K), pressure (15 and 25 MPa) and cosolvent presence (0 and 3 mol%) on the extraction yield were studied. The SC-CO2 assisted impregnation runs were carried out in a discontinuous mode at different pressure (15 and 25 MPa), temperature (318 and 328 K), and time (2 and 8 h) values, using 0.5 MPa min−1 as a constant value of depressurization rate. ANOVA results confirmed that pressure, temperature, and time influenced the extraction yield. Moreover, antioxidant activities of extracts of Z. multiflora were evaluated using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assays. In addition, the antibacterial activities of the extracts were screened against standard strains of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli). The results of this investigation indicated that extracts obtained from the aerial parts of Z. multiflora possessed antioxidant and antibacterial properties. The impregnated samples presented strong antibacterial activity against the selected microorganisms.

Abstract
A poly (lactic acid) (PLA) -based functional partition composite membrane (PLA/CA) containing chitosan (CS) and alizarin (AL) was designed by solution casting method. The PLA/CA membrane contains the antibacterial zone of the edge part (PLA/CS) and the pH response detection zone of the central part (PLA/AL). At the same time, the environmentally friendly plasticizer tributyl citrate (TBC) was added to make the prepared PLA/CA composite membrane have good flexibility and high transparency. The results of FE-SEM and FTIR showed that CS and AL were uniformly dispersed in PLA matrix and had good compatibility with PLA. The antioxidant activities of PLA/CS and PLA/AL composite films were 43.3 % and 72.8 %, respectively. At the same time, the inhibitory rates of PLA/CS membrane against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus were as high as 87.91 % and 75.17 %, respectively. PLA/AL films exhibit excellent UV barrier properties. When the environmental pH (ammonia and acetic acid vapor) changed repeatedly, the PLA/AL membrane showed reversible color change of yellow under acidic condition and purple under alkaline condition. During the packaging and storage of chicken breast meat, the freshness of chicken breast meat can be detected by the color change of functional PLA/CA composite membrane.

Abstract
Among the main biodegradable food packaging materials, poly-lactic acid (PLA) is a commercially successful polymer used notably in the food packaging industry. In this study, active PLA films containing different percentage of anise essential oil (AE) (0, 0.5, 1 and 1.5% v/v) were developed, and characterized by physical, mechanical and antibacterial analysis. Based on physical examinations, thermal stability of PLA/AE films was greater than the neat PLA film, and the minimum water vapor permeability (WVP) was recorded for PLA/0.5AE film (1.29 × 10 11 g/m s), while maximum WVP was observed for PLA/1.5AE (2.09 × 1011 g/m s). Moreover, the lightness and yellowness of the composites were decreased by the addition of AE. For the PLA composites with 1.5% AE, the tensile strength decreased by 35% and the elongation break increased by 28.09%, comparing to the pure PLA. According to the antibacterial analysis, the minimum inhibitory concentrations of PLA/AE film were 5 to 100 mg/mL and the active composite could create visible inhibition zones of 14.2 to 19.2 mm. Furthermore, the films containing AE inhibited L. monocytogenes and V. parahaemolyticus in a concentration-dependent manner. The confirmation of the success of the incorporation of EOs into the PLA films was further evaluated using principal component analysis, where positive results were obtained. In this context, our findings suggest the significant potency of AE to be used as an antibacterial agent in active food packaging.

Abstract
In the last ten years, environmental consciousness has increased worldwide, leading to the development of eco-friendly materials to replace synthetic ones. Natural fibers are extracted from renewable resources at low cost. Their combination with synthetic polymers as reinforcement materials has been an important step forward in that direction. The sustainability and excellent physical and biological (e.g., biocompatibility, antimicrobial activity) properties of these biocomposites have extended their application to the biomedical field. This paper offers a detailed overview of the extraction and separation processes applied to natural fibers and their posterior chemical and physical modifications for biocomposite fabrication. Because of the requirements for biomedical device production, specialized biomolecules are currently being incorporated onto these biocomposites. From antibiotics to peptides and plant extracts, to name a few, this review explores their impact on the final biocomposite product, in light of their individual or combined effect, and analyzes the most recurrent strategies for biomolecule immobilization.
