Influence of natural organic matter on the aggregation dynamics of biochar colloids derived from various feedstocks

Abundant biochar colloids (BCs) produced from a wide range of feedstocks, resulting from forest fires, agricultural production, and environmental restoration, exhibit varying aggregation behaviors influenced by feedstock type and natural organic matter. However, the impact of natural organic matter on the colloidal stability of BCs derived from different feedstocks remains poorly understood. In this study, six selected biochars were derived from various feedstocks as follows: sewage sludge (SS), rice husk (RH), oil seed rape straw pellets (OSR), wheat straw pellets (WS), miscanthus straw pellets (MS) and softwood pellets (SW). The colloidal stability of BCs, with the exogenous addition of organic matter, was further determined. The order of critical coagulation concentrations (CCCs) of BCs with the presence of humic acid (HA) was as follows: RH (989.48 mM) < MS (1084.69 mM) < SS (1149.76 mM) < WS (1338.99 mM) < OSR (2402.98 mM) < SW (3151.32 mM). This order was significantly positively correlated with the specific surface area and negatively correlated with the ash content of the bulk biochar. Compared to HA, bovine serum albumin (BSA) more effectively inhibited the aggregation behavior of BCs due to steric hindrance. The initial aggregation rate constant (k) of BCs at 3000 mM NaCl was as follows: MS (0.238 nm/s) > OSR (0.142 nm/s) > WS (0.128 nm/s) > SS (0.126 nm/s) > RH (0.118 nm/s) > SW (0.112 nm/s). The stabilizing effects of BSA on biochar colloids were independent of the physicochemical properties of bulk biochar. In the presence of BSA, a thin layer of protein corona significantly enhanced the stability of biochar colloids, particularly the BCs derived from MS. Our results underscore the importance of considering feedstock resources and natural organic matter type when assessing the aggregation and potential risks of BCs in aquatic systems.

Mechanistic insight into the effects of interaction between biochar and soil with different properties on phenanthrene sorption

Soil composition varies considerably in nature, so it is vital to investigate the mechanism of the effect of various soil parameters on biochar sorption capacity. In this study, two biochars (W4 and W7) were derived from wheat straw at temperatures of 400 and 700 °C and were incubated with three different soils. Changes in biochar surface features by aging in the soils and the consequent impact on phenanthrene sorption were examined. The results showed that the effect of adding biochar on phenanthrene sorption capacity (Koc) varied by soil. When biochar was freshly mixed with soil, the Koc value in soil with higher clay content was more dramatically altered by biochar, which is due to clay particles adhering to the biochar surface. Moreover, the Koc value was significantly decreased by the addition of W4 but increased by the addition of W7 in general. After aging, most of the Koc value decreased. The greatest decrease in Koc value was observed in biochar and soil composed with the highest clay content for W4 (24-63%), as well as soil composed with the highest organic matter content for W7 (46-64%). This is because the surface polarity and micropores of biochar dropped the most rapidly in these mixes, resulting in a significant decrease in hydrophobic and pore-filling properties. The results revealed that the impact of biochar-soil interactions on phenanthrene sorption is related to not only biochar properties but also soil clay particles, soil organic matter content and pH. The findings of the study can be utilized to assess the efficacy of biochar application in soil remediation for various features.

A systematic review of biochar aging and the potential eco-environmental risk in heavy metal contaminated soil

Biochar is widely accepted as a green and effective amendment for remediating heavy metals (HMs) contaminated soil, but its long-term efficiency and safety changes with biochar aging in fields. Currently, some reviews have qualitatively summarized biochar aging methods and mechanisms, aging-induced changes in biochar properties, and often ignored the potential eco-environmental risk during biochar aging process. Therefore, this review systematically summarizes the study methods of biochar aging, quantitatively compares the effects of different biochar aging process on its properties, and discusses the potential eco-environmental risk due to biochar aging in HMs contaminated soil. At present, various artificial aging methods (physical aging, chemical aging and biological aging) rather than natural field aging have been applied to study the changes of biochar's properties. Generally, biochar aging increases specific surface area (SSA), pore volume (PV), surface oxygen-containing functional group (OFGs) and O content, while decreases pH, ash, H, C and N content. Chemical aging method has a greater effect on the properties of biochar than other aging methods. In addition, biochar aging may lead to HMs remobilization and produce new types of pollutants, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) and colloidal/nano biochar particles, which consequently bring secondary eco-environmental risk. Finally, future research directions are suggested to establish a more accurate assessment method and model on biochar aging behavior and evaluate the environmental safety of aged biochar, in order to promote its wider application for remediating HMs contaminated soil.

Physicochemical properties and performance of non-woody derived biochars for the sustainable removal of aquatic pollutants: A systematic review

Biochar is a carbon-rich material produced from the partial combustion of different biomass residues. It can be used as a promising material for adsorbing pollutants from soil and water and promoting environmental sustainability. Extensive research has been conducted on biochars prepared from different feedstocks used for pollutant removal. However, a comprehensive review of biochar derived from non-woody feedstocks (NWF) and its physiochemical attributes, adsorption capacities, and performance in removing heavy metals, antibiotics, and organic pollutants from water systems needs to be included. This review revealed that the biochars derived from NWF and their adsorption efficiency varied greatly according to pyrolysis temperatures. However, biochars (NWF) pyrolyzed at higher temperatures (400-800 °C) manifested excellent physiochemical and structural attributes as well as significant removal effectiveness against antibiotics, heavy metals, and organic compounds from contaminated water. This review further highlighted why biochars prepared from NWF are most valuable/beneficial for water treatment. What preparatory conditions (pyrolysis temperature, residence time, heating rate, and gas flow rate) are necessary to design a desirable biochar containing superior physiochemical and structural properties, and adsorption efficiency for aquatic pollutants? The findings of this review will provide new research directions in the field of water decontamination through the application of NWF-derived adsorbents.

Migration Rules and Mechanisms of Nano-Biochar in Soil Columns under Various Transport Conditions

Compared to traditional biochar (BC), nano-biochar (NBC) boasts superior physicochemical properties, promising extensive applications in agriculture, ecological environments, and beyond. Due to its strong adsorption and migration properties, NBC may carry nutrients or pollutants to deeper soil layers or even groundwater, causing serious environmental risks. Nevertheless, the migration rules and mechanisms of NBC in soil are still unclear. Therefore, this study employed soil column migration experiments to systematically explore the migration rules and mechanisms of NBC under various flow rates, initial soil water contents, soil depths, and soil textures. The results showed that regulated by smaller particle size differences and greater surface charges, NBC exhibited a stronger migration ability compared with traditional BC. As the soil texture transitioned from fine to coarse, the migration capability of NBC significantly improved, driven by both pore structure and interaction forces as described by the DLVO theory. The migration ability of NBC was also greatly boosted as the soil transitioned from saturated to unsaturated conditions, primarily because of preferential flow. When the flow rate increased from 70% KS to 100% KS and 130% KS, the migration ability of NBC also increased accordingly, as changes in injection flow rates altered the velocity distribution of pore water. NBC in 25 cm soil columns was more prone to shallow retention compared with 10 cm soil columns, resulting in weaker overall migration ability. In addition, through fitting of the two-site kinetic model and related parameters, the penetration curves of NBC under various variable conditions were effectively characterized. These findings could offer valuable insights for NBC's future efficient, rational, and sustainable utilization, facilitating the evaluation and mitigation of its potential environmental risks.

Nitrogen-functionalization of carbon materials for supercapacitor: Combining with nanostructure directly is superior to doping amorphous element

Just how heteroatomic functionalization enhances electrochemical capacity of carbon materials is a recent and widely studied field in scientific research. However, there is no consensus on whether combining with heteroatom-bearing nanostructures directly or doping amorphous elements is more advantageous. Herein, two kinds of porous carbon nanosheets were prepared from coal tar pitch through anchoring graphitic carbon nitride (PCNs/GCNs-5) or doping amorphous nitrogen element (PCNs/N). The structural characteristics and electrochemical properties of the two PCNs were revealed and compared carefully. It can be found that the amorphous nitrogen of PCNs/N will have a grievous impact on its carbon skeleton network, resulting in reduced stability in charge and discharge process, while the structural collapse of carbon network could be avoided in PCNs/GCNs-5 by the heteroatoms in the form of nanostructure. Particularly, PCNs/GCNs-5 exhibits extremely high specific capacity of 388 F g-1 at 1 A g-1, and splendid the capacitance retention rate of 98% after 10,000 cycles of charge and discharge, which are overmatch than the amorphous nitrogen doped carbon materials reported recently and PCNs/N. The combining strategy with nanostructure will inspire the design of carbon materials towards high-performance supercapacitor.

Releasing and Assessing the Toxicity of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons from Biochar Loaded with Iron

Iron (Fe)-loaded biochar has garnered attention for its potential applications in recent years. However, the pyrolysis process of Fe-loaded biochar generates polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which can have adverse effects on both human health and the environment. This study explored the correlation between Fe loading and PAH production in Fe-loaded biochar. The results indicate that increasing Fe loading in biochar reduces the PAH concentration, with the most significant decrease observed in naphthalene (0.02-0.08 mg/kg). This reduction can be attributed to the decrease in precursor compounds (e.g., C2H2), substitution of the C=O bond by Fe-O, and a decrease in the dissolved organic matter concentration (3.19-10.76 mg/L) with Fe loading. When Fe loading increased from 0 to 10%, the ecological toxicity of biochar increased by 33.48% due to an elevated production of dibenzo[a,h]anthracene, which poses a significant risk to human health. Therefore, it is imperative to take into consideration the ecological risk of PAHs prior to the application of Fe-loaded biochar. This study presents a comprehensive risk assessment of Fe-loaded biochar and provides valuable insights into the optimization of its production and safe application.

Biobased Kapok Fiber Nano-Structure for Energy and Environment Application: A Critical Review

The increasing degradation of fossil fuels has motivated the globe to turn to green energy solutions such as biofuel in order to minimize the entire reliance on fossil fuels. Green renewable resources have grown in popularity in recent years as a result of the advancement of environmental technology solutions. Kapok fiber is a sort of cellulosic fiber derived from kapok tree seeds (Ceiba pentandra). Kapok Fiber, as a bio-template, offers the best alternatives to provide clean and renewable energy sources. The unique structure, good conductivity, and excellent physical properties exhibited by kapok fiber nominate it as a highly favored cocatalyst for deriving solar energy processes. This review will explore the role and recent developments of KF in energy production, including hydrogen and CO₂ reduction. Moreover, this work summarized the potential of kapok fiber in environmental applications, including adsorption and degradation. The future contribution and concerns are highlighted in order to provide perspective on the future advancement of kapok fiber.

Considerations for evaluating innovative stormwater treatment media for removal of dissolved contaminants of concern with focus on biochar

Stormwater from complex land uses is an important contributor of contaminants of concern (COCs) such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), Copper, and Zinc to receiving water bodies. A large portion of these COCs bind to particulate matter in stormwater, which can be removed through filtration by traditional media. However, the remaining dissolved COCs can be significant and require special attention such as engineered treatment measures and media. Biochar is a porous sorbent produced from a variety of organic materials. In the last decade biochar has been gaining attention as a stormwater treatment medium due to low cost compared to activated carbon. However, biochar is not a uniform product and selection of an appropriate biochar for the removal of specific contaminants can be a complex process. Biochars are synthesized from various feedstocks and using different manufacturing approaches, including pyrolysis temperature, impact the biochar properties thus affecting ability to remove stormwater contaminants. The local availability of specific biochar products is another important consideration. An evaluation of proposed stormwater control measure (SCM) media needs to consider the dynamic conditions associated with stormwater and its management, but the passive requirements of the SCM. The media should be able to mitigate flood risks, remove targeted COCs under high flow SCM conditions, and address practical considerations like cost, sourcing, and construction and maintenance. This paper outlines a process for selecting promising candidates for SCM media and evaluating their performance through laboratory tests and field deployment with special attention to unique stormwater considerations.
