Structure-oriented conversions of plastics to carbon nanomaterials

Progress and Perspective for "Green" Strategies of Catalytic Plastics Conversion into Fuels by Regulating Half-Reactions

Nowadays, plastic waste threatens public health and the natural ecosystems of our lives. It is highly beneficial to recycle plastic waste in order to maximize the reuse of its contained carbon sources for the development of other valuable products. Unfortunately, traditional techniques usually require significant energy consumption and result in the generation of hazardous waste. Herein, the up-to-date developments on the "green" strategies under mild conditions including electrocatalysis, photocatalysis, and photoelectrocatalysis of plastic wastes are presented. During the oxidation of plastics in these "green" strategies, corresponding reduction reactions usually exist, which affect the property of catalytic plastics conversion. Particularly, we mainly focus on how to design the corresponding half reactions, such as the water reduction, carbon dioxide reduction, and nitrate reduction. Finally, we provide forward-looking insight into the enhancement of these "green" strategies, the extension of more half reactions into other organic catalysis, a comprehensive exploration of the underlying mechanisms through in situ studies and theoretical analysis and the problems for practical applications that needs to be solved.

Unveiling Small-Sized Plastic Particles Hidden behind Large-Sized Ones in Human Excretion and Their Potential Sources

Health risks of microplastic exposure have drawn growing global concerns due to the widespread distribution of microplastics in the environment. However, more evidence is needed to understand the exposure characteristics of microplastics owing to the limitation of current spectrum technologies, especially the missing information on small-sized particles. In the present study, laser direct infrared spectroscopy and thermal desorption-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry combined pyrolysis using a tubular furnace (TD-GC/MS) were employed to comprehensively detect the presence of plastic particles down to 0.22 μm in human excreted samples. The results showed that polyethylene (PE), polyvinyl chloride, PE terephthalate (PET), and polypropylene dominated large-sized (>20 μm) and small-sized plastic plastics (0.22-20 μm) in feces and urine. Moreover, fragments accounted for 60.71 and 60.37% in feces and urine, respectively, representing the most pervasive shape in excretion. Surprisingly, the concentration of small-sized particles was significantly higher than that of large-sized microplastics, accounting for 56.54 and 50.07% in feces (345.58 μg/g) and urine (6.49 μg/mL). Significant positive correlations were observed between the level of plastic particles in feces and the use of plastic containers and the consumption of aquatic products (Spearman correlation analysis, p < 0.01), suggesting the potential sources for plastic particles in humans. Furthermore, it is estimated that feces was the primary excretory pathway, consisting of 94.0% of total excreted microplastics daily. This study provides novel evidence regarding small-sized plastic particles, which are predominant fractions in human excretion, increasing the knowledge of the potential hazards of omnipresent microplastics to human exposure.

Polymer Waste Valorization into Advanced Carbon Nanomaterials for Potential Energy and Environment Applications

The rise in universal population and accompanying demands have directed toward an exponential surge in the generation of polymeric waste. The estimate predicts that world-wide plastic production will rise to ≈590 million metric tons by 2050, whereas 5000 million more tires will be routinely abandoned by 2030. Handling this waste and its detrimental consequences on the Earth's ecosystem and human health presents a significant challenge. Converting the wastes into carbon-based functional materials viz. activated carbon, graphene, and nanotubes is considered the most scientific and adaptable method. Herein, this world provides an overview of the various sources of polymeric wastes, modes of build-up, impact on the environment, and management approaches. Update on advances and novel modifications made in methodologies for converting diverse types of polymeric wastes into carbon nanomaterials over the last 5 years are given. A remarkable focus is made to comprehend the applications of polymeric waste-derived carbon nanomaterials (PWDCNMs) in the CO2 capture, removal of heavy metal ions, supercapacitor-based energy storage and water splitting with an emphasis on the correlation between PWDCNMs' properties and their performances. This review offers insights into emerging developments in the upcycling of polymeric wastes and their applications in environment and energy.

Sustainability, performance, and production perspectives of waste-derived functional carbon nanomaterials towards a sustainable environment: A review

The survival of humanity is severely threatened by the massive accumulation of waste in the ecosystem. One plausible solution for the management and upcycling of waste is conversing waste at the molecular level and deriving carbon-based nanomaterial. The field of carbon nanomaterials with distinctive properties, such as exceptionally large surface areas, good thermal and chemical stability, and improved propagation of charge carriers, remains a significant area of research. The study demonstrates recent developments in high-value carbon-based photocatalysts synthesis from various waste precursors, including zoonotic, phytogenic, polyolefinic, electronic, and biomedical, highlighting the progression as photocatalysts and adsorbents for wastewater treatment and water splitting applications. This review highpoints the benefits of using waste as a precursor to support sustainability and circular economy and the risks associated with their use. Finally, we support that a sustainable society will eventually be realized by exploring present obstacles and potential steps for creating superior carbon-based nanomaterials in the future.

Recent advancements in the use of plastics as a carbon source for carbon nanotubes synthesis - A review

Plastics, which majorly consist of polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE), low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE)), polystyrene (PS), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), etc., are the most abundant municipal solid wastes (MSW). They have been utilized as a cheap carbon feedstock in the synthesis of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) because of their high hydrocarbon content, mainly carbon and hydrogen, especially for the polyolefins. In this review, the detailed progress made so far in the use of plastics (both waste and virgin) as cheap carbon feedstock in the synthesis of CNTs (only) over the years is studied. The primary aim of this work is to provide an expansive landscape made so far, especially in the areas of catalysts, catalyst supports, and the methods employed in their preparations and other operational growth conditions, as well as already explored applications of plastic-derived CNTs. This is to enable researchers to easily access, understand, and summarise previous works done in this area, forging ahead towards improving the yield and quality of plastic-derived CNTs, which could extend their market and use in other purity-sensitive applications.

The modified biochar from wheat straw by the combined composites of MnFe2O4 nanoparticles and chitosan Schiff base for enhanced removal of U(VI) ions from aqueous solutions

In the last few decades, U(VI) is a significant environmental threat. The innovative and environmentally friendly adsorbent materials for U(VI) removal were urgent. Preparation of the modified biochar from wheat straw by combined composites of MnFe2O4 nanoparticles and chitosan Schiff base (MnFe2O4@CsSB/BC) was characterized, and adsorption experiments were carried out to investigate the performance and interfacial mechanism of U(VI) removal. The results showed that MnFe2O4@CsSB/BC exhibited high adsorption capacity of U(VI) compared with BC. The adsorption process of U(VI) removal by MnFe2O4@CsSB/BC could be ascribed as pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir model. The maximum adsorption capacity of U(VI) removal by MnFe2O4@CsSB/BC reached 19.57 mg/g at pH4.0, 30 mg/L of U(VI), and 25 °C. The possible mechanism was a chemical adsorption process, and it mainly contained electrostatic attraction and surface complexation. Additionally, it also was an economic and environmental friendly adsorbent.

Sustainable Polyvinyl Chloride-Derived Soft Carbon Anodes for Potassium-Ion Storage: Electrochemical Behaviors and Mechanism

Soft carbon is a promising anode material for potassium-ion batteries due to its favorable properties such as low cost, high conductivity, stable capacity, and low potential platform. Polyvinyl chloride, as a white pollutant, is a soft carbon precursor that can be carbonized at varying temperatures to produce soft carbons with controllable defect and crystal structures. This work investigates the effect of carbonization temperature on the crystalline structures of the obtained soft carbons. In situ Raman spectroscopy was used to elucidate the adsorption-intercalation charge storage mechanism of potassium ions in soft carbons. Soft carbons prepared at the temperature of 800 °C have a defect-rich, short-range ordered structure, which provides optimal intercalation and adsorption sites for potassium ions, resulting in a satisfactory capacity of 302 mAh g-1 . This work presents new possibilities for designing soft carbon materials from recycling plastics for potassium-ion batteries.

Molecular-level insights into the heterogeneous variations and dynamic formation mechanism of leached dissolved organic matter during the photoaging of polystyrene microplastics

Microplastics (MPs) and their derivatives have received worldwide attention owing to their adverse effects on ecosystems. However, molecular diversity and dynamic formation of dissolved organic matter (DOM) during the photoaging of MPs remain unclear. Herein, we explored a molecular‒level formation mechanism for polystyrene MP (MPPS)‒derived DOM (PSDOM) during the photoaging of MPs to explain the evolution, heterogeneity, and sequential response of molecules to irradiation. Two‒dimensional correlation spectroscopy was applied to correlate the variations of PSDOM molecules detected by Fourier transform-ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry with those of MPPS functional groups detected by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Irradiation‒induced PSDOM contained the most highly unsaturated structures with oxygen, but showed fewer aromatic structures than natural aquatic DOM. Photochemical transformations occurred between saturated‒reduced and oxidized molecules during PSDOM leaching, with the low‒oxidized and high‒oxidized molecules undergoing considerable changes in the normal carbon oxidation state and molecular number, respectively. Copper nanoparticle-decorated nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets for electrochemical determination of paraquat

A new strategy to prepare copper (Cu) nanoparticles anchored in nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets (Cu@CN) has been designed and the nanomaterial applied to the determination of paraquat (PQ). The nanocomposite materials were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and several other techniques. We found that the Cu nanoparticles are uniformly distributed on the carbon materials, providing abundant active sites for electrochemical detection. The electrochemical behavior of the Cu@CN-based PQ sensor was investigated by square-wave voltammetry (SWV). Cu@CN exhibited excellent electrochemical activity and PQ detection performance. The Cu@CN-modified glassy carbon electrode (Cu@CN/GCE) exhibited excellent stability, favorable sensitivity, and high selectivity under optimized conditions (enrichment voltage -0.1 V and enrichment time 400 s) of the SWV test. The detection range reached 0.50 nM to 12.00 μM, and the limit of detection was 0.43 nM with high sensitivity of 18 μA·μM^-1·cm^-2. The detection limit is 9 times better than that of the high-performance liquid chromatography method. The Cu@CN electrochemical sensor demonstrated excellent sensitivity and selectivity also in environmental water and fruit samples enabling its use in practical, rapid trace-level detection of PQ in environmental samples.

Spectroscopic investigations on the interaction between nano plastic and catalase on molecular level

As an emerging pollutant that is easily bonded with some functional proteins and the effects of their physiological expressions, nano plastics (NPs) have been widely detected in various environmental mediums, even in human blood. Compared to microplastics, less information on the interactions between NPs and proteins has been reported. Here, the interaction mechanism between common polystyrene nano plastics (PSNPs) and catalase (CAT) under two typical physiological conditions, pH 7.4 and 4.0, was investigated by UV-visible spectroscopy, circular dichroism (CD), and dynamic light scattering (DLS). Compared with the enhanced catalytic effects when increasing PSNPs at pH 7.4, a trend of initial inhibition and enhanced activity was observed at pH 4.0. Spectroscopic analysis and calculation results indicated that their binding was static, with only one binding site and stronger interactions under acidic conditions. UV-visible and CD spectra analysis demonstrated that the difference in enzymatic activity could be mainly attributed to the conformational alternation of CAT in the presence of PSNPs, which is obviously affected by solution chemistry. The change was also revealed by the hydrodynamic diameter and zeta potentials of the complexes supplied by DLS analysis. This study will help understand the health risks of nano plastic pollution and provide a theoretical basis for studying their toxicological effects.

Elevated CO2 aggravated polystyrene microplastics effects on the rice-soil system under field conditions

Polystyrene microplastics (PS) are decomposed very slowly due to their recalcitrance and inevitably interact with the changing climate. How the interaction between PS and increasing CO₂ concentration affects the plant-soil system is rarely investigated. Here, a free-air CO₂ enrichment system in farm fields was used to study the impacts of PS added to soil at 10 mg kg^-1 on rice and soil bacterial communities at different CO₂ levels (ambient∼390 ppm and elevated∼590 ppm). Results showed that single PS interfered with Fe, Mn and Zn uptake of rice, and it increased the abundances of bacteria taxa assigned to N turnover and urease activities, leading to altered soil N transformation and availability. Elevated CO₂ alone enhanced rice photosynthesis, decreased the abundances of nitrogen-fixation bacteria, and induced co-occurrence patterns between bacteria simplified and decentralized. Combined PS and elevated CO₂ significantly decreased rice stomatal conductance and transpiration rate by 56.70% and 29.46%, respectively, and further inhibited elements uptake. Besides, combined exposure significantly disturbed bacterial amino acid metabolism, and stimulated the adaptative responses of resistant bacteria. Overall, this study revealed that increasing CO₂ concentrations may exacerbate the impacts of PS on rice performance and soil bacterial communities, providing new insights into the interaction between microplastics and climate change.

Microplastics distribution characteristics in typical inflow rivers of Taihu lake: Linking to nitrous oxide emission and microbial analysis

The microplastics in nature water are important for the environmental fate of nitrous oxide (N₂O). This study investigated the influence and microbial mechanism of microplastic abundance to the N₂O flux in typical inflow rivers of Taihu lake. The microplastic abundance were in a range of 160-700 particles/m³ surface water, and 514-3018 particles/kg dry sediment. The highest percentage of microplastic color was transparent, significantly higher than other color (p<0.0001) in both surface water and sediment. The dominant microplastic size was 500-5000 μm in surface water, while size lower than 1000 μm was dominant in sediment. The microplastic abundance in sediment was negatively correlated with the concentration of suspended sediments (SPS) (p<0.05), Chl-a (p<0.05), NH₄⁺-N (p<0.05) and TP (p<0.01) in inflow river surface water. The dissolved N₂O concentration were 45.71-132.42 nmol/L, and the N₂O fluxes were 29.85-276.60 μmol/m²/d. The dissolved N₂O concentration was significantly correlated with the nirK abundance and nirK/nosZI ratio negatively (p<0.05), revealed that sediment nirK-type denitrification was the main driver of dissolved N₂O. Meanwhile, the N₂O flux (water-air interface) was significantly correlated with nosZI, napA, narG and nirS negatively, implied that nitrification and denitrification interaction in sediment is the main influence factor. The denitrification process in sediment was the main driven factor of N₂O releasing. Mantel-test shows that microplastic abundance in surface water was significantly correlated with nitrification (p = 0.001∼0.01) and denitrification (p = 0.01∼0.05) genera in water. The dominant denitrification microorganism was Dechloromonas in sediment and Flavobacterium in surface water. These results provided new insight into the fact that plastisphere which comprises microbial community on microplastic could affect the N₂O emission in aquatic system.
