Biological Control of Chromium Redox and Stable Isotope Composition in the Surface Ocean

While chromium stable isotopes (δ53Cr) have received significant attention for their utility as a tracer of oxygen availability in the distant geological past, a mechanistic understanding of modern oceanic controls on Cr and δ53Cr is still lacking. Here we present total dissolved δ53Cr, concentrations of Cr (III) and total dissolved Cr, and net community productivity (NCP) from the North Pacific. Chromium concentrations show surface depletions in waters with elevated NCP, but not in lower productivity waters. Observed Cr deficits correspond well with calculated Cr export derived from NCP and Cr:C ratios of natural phytoplankton and marine particulates. Chromium (III) concentrations are stable over the diel cycle yet correlate with NCP, with maxima found in highly productive surface waters but not in lower productivity waters, indicating biological control on Cr (III). The relationship between Cr (III) and δ53Cr suggests that δ53Cr distributions may be controlled by the removal of isotopically light Cr (III) at an isotopic enrichment factor (∆53Cr) of -1.08‰ ± 0.25 relative to total dissolved δ53Cr, in agreement with the global δ53Cr-Cr fractionation factor (-0.82‰ ± 0.05). No perturbation to δ53Cr, Cr, or Cr (III) is observed in oxygen-depleted waters (~10 μmol/kg), suggesting no strong control by O2 availability, in agreement with other recent studies. Therefore, we propose that biological productivity is the primary control on Cr and δ53Cr in the modern ocean. Consequently, δ53Cr records in marine sediments may not faithfully record oxygen availability in the Late Quaternary. Instead, our data demonstrate that δ53Cr records may be a useful tracer for biological productivity.

Simultaneous determination of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) in tannery wastewater using low pressure ion chromatography combined with flow injection spectrophotometry

Trivalent and hexavalent chromium have been successfully separated and determined using low pressure ion chromatography combined with flow injection spectrophotometric analysis (LPIC-FIA). A column packed with crosslinking starch microspheres was used for on-line separation of Cr(III) from Cr(VI) in a flow-injection system because of its absorptive effect on Cr(III). To determine the concentration of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) in samples, we used 3.0 mmol/L nitric acid to elute adsorbed Cr(III) from the column and then used ceric sulfate-sulfuric acid as oxidant to convert all Cr(III) into Cr(VI). Then, Cr(VI) directly came from the samples and Cr(VI) came from Cr(III) successively formed a amaranthine complex with diphenycarbazide and the complex shows a maximum absorption at 530 nm. Analytical parameters including the concentration of eluent and oxidant solution, oxidizing temperature, length of oxidizing reaction coil, reaction coil and injection coil, interfering effects, etc., were optimized. The limit of detection was 1.25 μg/L for Cr(VI) and 3.76 μg/L for Cr(III). The linear relationship between absorption with the concentration of Cr(VI) and Cr(III) was 0.001-1.000 mg/L and 0.030-1.000 mg/L with correlation coefficients of 0.9995 and 0.9994, respectively. The relative standard deviation of Cr(VI) and Cr(III) was 1.21% and 1.66%, respectively (n=10). Major cations and anions did not show any interference. We validated this method through certified reference materials and through measuring the recovery in tannery wastewater.

Microwave-assisted derivatization and single-drop microextraction for gas chromatographic determination of chromium(III) in water

A rapid and efficient sample preparation method combining microwave-assisted derivatization (MAD) and single-drop microextraction (SDME) for the gas chromatographic (GC) determination of trace Cr(III) in water was developed. Aqueous Cr(III) was first converted to the volatile chromium trifluoroacetylacetonate (Cr(tfa)3) by reaction with 1,1,1-trifluoroacetylacetone (Htfa) under the irradiation of microwave. Derivatization of Cr(III) at ng ml(-1) level could be completed in less than 1 min. The formed Cr(tfa)3 was then extracted into a small droplet (2 microl) of toluene suspended at the tip of a microsyringe needle. The optimal extraction time was 30 min. The solvent drop was directly injected into a GC equipped with a flame photometric detector (FPD) for analysis. The two Cr(tfa)3 isomers extracted could be efficiently separated in 2 min. Linearity (r>0.99) over the concentration range 2-300 ng ml(-1) Cr was obtained and the limit of detection was 0.5 ng ml(-1) Cr. The relative standard deviation was 7.8% at 20 ng ml(-1) Cr (n=5). Applicability of this method to water analysis was examined by analyzing the chromium content in a reference standard water sample and an industrial effluent.

Speciation of chromium by selective separation and preconcentration of Cr(III) on an immobilized nanometer titanium dioxide microcolumn

Nanometer titanium dioxide immobilized on silica gel (immobilized nanometer-scale TiO2 particles) was prepared by a sol-gel method and characterized by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The adsorptive behavior of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) on immobilized nanometer TiO2 was assessed. Cr(III) was selectively sorbed on immobilized nanometer TiO2 in the pH range of 7-9, while Cr(VI) was found to remain in solution. A sensitive and selective method has been developed for the speciation of chromium in water samples using an immobilized nanometer TiO2 microcolumn and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry. Under optimized conditions (pH 7.0, flow rate 2.0 mL/min), Cr(III) was retained on the column, then eluted with 0.5 mol/L HNO3 and determined by ICP-AES. Total chromium was determined after the reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) by ascorbic acid. The adsorption capacity of immobilized nanometer TiO2 for Cr(III) was found to be 7.04 mg/g. The detection limit for Cr(III) was 0.22 ng/mL and the RSD was 3.5% (n = 11, c = 100 ng/ mL) with an enrichment factor of 50. The proposed method has been applied to the speciation of chromium in water samples with satisfactory results.

Summer distribution of trace metals in the western sector of the Ross Sea, Antarctica

The more important water masses generated by the interaction of Circumpolar Deep Water and the shelf waters in the western sector of the Ross Sea are characterized for trace element contents. The distribution of cadmium, lead, copper, zinc, iron, manganese and chromium during the austral summer is analysed and discussed according to the physical, chemical and biological processes which affect the composition of the water masses. The Cd concentration is found to have a relative high variability that can be related to biological activity and the water mass age, MCDW presents a mean dissolved concentration (SD) of 0.77 (0.07) nmol kg(-1), while the HSSW and AASW have a mean concentration of 0.63 (0.06) and 0.61 (0.16) nmol kg(-1), respectively. Lead features the typical distribution of a scavenged element with a surface maximum ranging between 22 and 130 pmol kg(-1) decreasing to 11 pmol kg(-1) in deep waters. However, the vertical distribution in the shelf area features a maximum concentration in intermediate/deep waters and we can hypothesize that the distribution may be influenced by more than one source. The surface dissolved concentration of zinc and copper were un-homogeneously distributed, the mean (SD) values were 5.25 (2.92) and 1.99 (1.49) nmol kg(-1) for zinc and copper, respectively and increased with depth for both the elements. We may therefore hypothesize enrichment in the dissolved phase deriving from recycling in deep waters. 95% of the chromium was in dissolved form and showed a superficial depletion; the mean concentrations were 1.6 +/- 0.2 and 2.6 +/- 0.8 nmol kg(-1) for surface and deep waters respectively. The vertical distribution of dissolved manganese was quite homogeneous with a mean concentration 0.96 +/- 0.7 nmol kg(-1). The particulate iron and manganese concentration trends are similar and feature a significant bottom increase implying a significant input from resuspension; the mean concentration of particulate ranged between 1.4 and 7.4 nmol kg(-1) for iron and ranged between 0.072 and 0.29 nmol kg(-1) for manganese.

Determination of chromium(III) in water by solid-phase microextraction with a polyimide-coated fiber and gas chromatography-flame photometric detection

A method for the determination of trace Cr(III) in aqueous solution by solid-phase microextraction (SPME) coupled with gas chromatography (GC)-flame photometric detection (FPD) was developed. Aqueous Cr(III) was first converted to the volatile chromium trifluoroacetylacetonate (Cr(tfa)3) by derivatization with 1,1,1-trifluoroacetylacetone (Htfa), followed by SPME extraction using a polyimide-coated silica fiber. The distribution constants (K) of derivatized cis- and trans-Cr(tfa)3 between the polyimide phase and aqueous phase were 2012 and 2214, respectively. The two Cr(tfa)3 isomers extracted can be efficiently separated by a DB-210 GC column within 9 min. Selective detection of Cr was performed by a FPD equipped with a 385-nm long-pass filter. Linearity (r> 0.99) over the concentration range 5-300 ng ml(-1) Cr was obtained and the limit of detection was 2 ng ml(-1) Cr. The relative standard deviation was 7% at 10 ng ml(-1) Cr (n = 5). Applicability of this method to water analysis was tested by analyzing the chromium content in a reference standard water sample and an industrial effluent.

Chromium occurrence in the environment and methods of its speciation

This article includes a survey of chromium (Cr) occurrence in different environmental compartments, its pathways in the environment and the cross-sectional presentation of Cr speciation methods against the background of Cr chemistry. The aim of the article is to demonstrate that knowledge of interconversion processes between different Cr forms is necessary to understand its behaviour and role in the environment, in addition to enabling reliable Cr speciation analysis to be performed. The current methods of Cr speciation are presented, characterized and their usefulness discussed. These must rely on superior separation and detection capabilities since Cr in environmental compartments is mostly at trace or ultra-trace level. The need for using unique techniques of sampling, storage, handling and separation for Cr speciation is documented.
