Simultaneous determination of alkali and alkaline earth metals by ion chromatography with neutral carrier-based ion-selective electrode detector

Addressing the Detection of Ammonium Ion in Environmental Water Samples via Tandem Potentiometry-Ion Chromatography

An analytical methodology for detecting ammonium ion (NH₄ ⁺) in environmental water through potentiometry-ion chromatography (IC) in tandem is presented here. A multielectrode flow cell is implemented as a potentiometric detector after chromatographic separation of cations in the sample. The electrodes are fabricated via miniaturized all-solid-state configuration, using a nonactin-based plasticized polymeric membrane as the sensing element. The overall analytical setup is based on an injection valve, column, traditional conductometric detector, and new potentiometric detector (in that order), permitting the characterization of the analytical performance of the potentiometric detector while validating the results. The limit of detection was found to be ca. 3 × 10^-7 M NH₄ ⁺ concentration after linearization of the potentiometric response, and intra- and interelectrode variations of <10% were observed. Importantly, interference from other cations was suppressed in the tandem potentiometry-IC, and thus, the NH₄ ⁺ content in fresh- and seawater samples from different locations was successfully analyzed. This analytical technology demonstrated a great potential for the reliable monitoring of NH₄ ⁺ at micromolar levels, in contrast to the conductivity detector and previously reported NH₄ ⁺ potentiometric sensors functioning in batch mode or even coupled with IC. Additionally, the suitability of the potentiometric cell for selective multi-ion analysis in the same sample, i.e., Na⁺, NH₄ ⁺, and K⁺ in water, has been proven.

Simultaneous determination of Cu2+, Zn2+, Cd2+, Hg2+ and Pb2+ by using second-derivative spectrophotometry method

A new method of simultaneous determination of Cu2+, Zn2+, Cd2+, Hg2+ and Pb2+ is proposed here by using the second-derivative spectrophotometry method. In pH=10.35 Borax-NaOH buffer, using meso-tetra (3-methoxyl-4-hydroxylphenyl) porphyrin ([T-(3-MO-4-HP)P]) as chromomeric reagent, micelle solution was formed after Tween-80 surfactant was added into the solution containing Cu2+, Zn2+, Cd2+, Hg2+ and Pb2+ ions. The original absorption spectrum of the above complexes was obtained after heating in the boiling water for 25 min. The second-derivative absorption peaks of five metal-porphyrin complexes can be separated from the original absorption spectrum by using chemometric tool. In this way, Cu2+, Zn2+, Cd2+, Hg2+ and Pb2+ ions can be determined simultaneously. Under the optimal conditions, the linear ranges of the calibration curve were 0-0.60, 0-0.60, 0-0.40, 0-0.80 and 0-0.48 μg mL(-1) for Cu2+, Zn2+, Cd2+, Hg2+ and Pb2+, respectively. The molar absorptivity of these color systems were 1.38×10(5), 1.01×10(5), 3.24×10(5), 1.07×10(5) and 1.29×10(5)Lmol(-1)cm(-1). The method developed in this paper has advantages in selectivity, sensitivity, operation and can effectively resolve spectra overlapping problem. This method has been applied to determine the real samples with satisfactory results.

Application of microcolumn ion chromatography using anion exchangers modified with dextran sulfate for the determination of alkali and alkaline-earth metal ions

Microcolumn ion chromatography using anion exchangers modified with dextran sulfate has been applied to the determination of alkali and alkaline-earth metal ions contained in guinea pig serum and bovine serum. These serums contained Na+, NH4+, K+, Mg2+ and Ca2+ and they were indirectly detected at 200 nm. The determination was done without any pretreatment procedure other than dilution.

Ion chromatography detector based on solid-state ion-selective electrode array

A variety of neutral carrier type ionophores for monovalent cations were employed to prepare solid-state cation-selective electrodes (SSEs) for use as a detector in single-column ion chromatography (IC). The polyurethane-based pseudoreference electrode made it possible to assemble an array type SSE detector for IC. An SSE-based detector provides not only the overall chromatogram for the separated ion species (monensin methyl ester-nonactin-based membrane), but also the enhanced chromatogram for specified ions of interest (valinomycin as K+ and nonactin for NH4+). This feature makes it possible to perform highly quantitative analysis with low detection limits even if the separation efficiency of the ion-exchange is not sufficient. Since SSE-based IC detectors are easily miniaturized and replaceable at low cost, they are an ideal component of a portable IC system.

Liquid chromatography: a tool for the analysis of metal species

An overview is presented of classic and more recent applications of liquid chromatography for the analysis of metal species. The different approaches involving ion-exchange, ion-pair, and chelation separation mechanisms are discussed as well as the new philosophy of simply removing interferents before specific detections of metal ions (alkali and alakaline earths, rare earths, heavy and transition metals). New more selective materials enabling difficult separations and studies on multimodal or hyphenated techniques for metal speciation (e.g. arsenic and chromium) are considered.
