Murine endogenous retroviruses

Up to 10% of the mouse genome is comprised of endogenous retrovirus (ERV) sequences, and most represent the remains of ancient germ line infections. Our knowledge of the three distinct classes of ERVs is inversely correlated with their copy number, and their characterization has benefited from the availability of divergent wild mouse species and subspecies, and from ongoing analysis of the Mus genome sequence. In contrast to human ERVs, which are nearly all extinct, active mouse ERVs can still be found in all three ERV classes. The distribution and diversity of ERVs has been shaped by host-virus interactions over the course of evolution, but ERVs have also been pivotal in shaping the mouse genome by altering host genes through insertional mutagenesis, by adding novel regulatory and coding sequences, and by their co-option by host cells as retroviral resistance genes. We review mechanisms by which an adaptive coexistence has evolved. (Part of a multi-author review).

On the role of DNA synthesis in avian tumor virus infection

Preinfection of chick embryo fibroblasts with an avian tumor virus does not eliminate the requirement of early DNA synthesis for other avian tumor viruses superinfecting the same cells several days after the primary inoculum. The function served by the early DNA in avian tumor virus infection either fails to persist into late infection or is genetically specific for each viral type.

Cellular origin of a mouse leukemia viral ribonucleic acid

Mouse erythroblastosis virus, a member of the mouse leukemia virus group, was obtained from chronically infected C(3)H mouse embryo cells and purified on sucrose gradients. The ribonucleic acid (RNA) extracted from ribonuclease-treated virus consisted of a rapidly sedimenting (72S) species and a more slowly sedimenting component (4 to 30S). The 72S RNA did not contain base sequences homologous to deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) from infected cells as determined by hybridization studies. In contrast, the slowly sedimenting RNA enclosed within the virus had base sequences homologous to DNA from infected and uninfected C(3)H mouse embryo cells.
