Ensemble coding of muscle stretches in afferent populations containing different types of muscle afferents

Detection of epimuscular myofascial forces by Golgi tendon organs

Skeletal muscles embed multiple tendon organs, both at the proximal and distal ends of muscle fibers. One of the functions of such spatial distribution may be to provide locally unique force feedback, which may become more important when stresses are distributed non-uniformly within the muscle. Forces exerted by connections between adjacent muscles (i.e. epimuscular myofascial forces) may cause such local differences in force. The aim of this exploratory study was to investigate the effects of mechanical interactions between adjacent muscles on sensory encoding by tendon organs. Action potentials from single afferents were recorded intra-axonally in response to ramp-hold release (RHR) stretches of a passive agonistic muscle at different lengths or relative positions of its passive synergist. The tendons of gastrocnemius (GAS), plantaris (PL) and soleus (SO) muscles were cut from the skeleton for attachment to servomotors. Connective tissues among these muscles were kept intact. Lengthening GAS + PL decreased the force threshold of SO tendon organs (p = 0.035). The force threshold of lateral gastrocnemius (LG) tendon organs was not affected by SO length (p = 0.371). Also displacing LG + PL, kept at a constant muscle-tendon unit length, from a proximal to a more distal position resulted in a decrease in force threshold of LG tendon organs (p = 0.007). These results indicate that tendon organ firing is affected by changes in length and/or relative position of adjacent synergistic muscles. We conclude that tendon organs can provide the central nervous system with information about local stresses caused by epimuscular myofascial forces.

Sensory systems in the control of movement

Animal movement is immensely varied, from the simplest reflexive responses to the most complex, dexterous voluntary tasks. Here, we focus on the control of movement in mammals, including humans. First, the sensory inputs most closely implicated in controlling movement are reviewed, with a focus on somatosensory receptors. The response properties of the large muscle receptors are examined in detail. The role of sensory input in the control of movement is then discussed, with an emphasis on the control of locomotion. The interaction between central pattern generators and sensory input, in particular in relation to stretch reflexes, timing, and pattern forming neuronal networks is examined. It is proposed that neural signals related to bodily velocity form the basic descending command that controls locomotion through specific and well-characterized relationships between muscle activation, step cycle phase durations, and biomechanical outcomes. Sensory input is crucial in modulating both the timing and pattern forming parts of this mechanism.

Development of the comprehensive observations of proprioception (COP): validity, reliability, and factor analysis

OBJECTIVE

We developed an observational tool, the Comprehensive Observations of Proprioception (COP), for identifying proprioceptive processing issues in children with developmental disabilities.

METHOD

Development of the COP underwent three phases. First, we developed items representing proprioceptive functions on the basis of an extensive literature review and consultation with occupational therapists. We then established interrater reliability and content, construct, and criterion validity. Finally, we completed a factor analysis of COP ratings of 130 children with known developmental disabilities.

RESULTS

Adequate validity and reliability were established. Factor analysis revealed a four-factor model that explained the underlying structure of the measure as it was hypothesized.

CONCLUSION

The COP is a valid criterion-referenced short observational tool that structures the clinician's observations by linking a child's behaviors to areas identified in the literature as relevant to proprioceptive processing. It takes 15 min to administer and can be used in a variety of contexts, such as the home, clinic, and school.

Variabilidade da frequência cardíaca em mulheres com hipermobilidade articular

A hipermobilidade é a capacidade de desempenhar movimentos articulares com amplitude maior que o normal. A prevalência possui variações determinadas pela etnia, sexo, idade, atividade física e variações nos critérios de caracterização. Aproximadamente 30% dos adultos são portadores e apresentam feedback proprioceptivo, sensorial diminuído e espacial alterado da articulação levando a maior frequência de ativação e deformação dos mecanorreceptores nos músculos esqueléticos e na pele. O aumento dos impulsos aferentes dos mecanorreceptores sobre a área cardiovascular no bulbo altera o controle autonômico sobre o coração. O objetivo do estudo foi avaliar o balanço simpatovagal durante manobra de ortostatismo em mulheres com hipermobilidade. Participaram do estudo 27 voluntárias, com 19,97±1,79 anos, índice de massa corpórea abaixo de 25 kg/m², sedentárias e sem uso de medicação. Após diagnóstico da hipermobilidade articular, segundo o escore de Beighton, foram divididas em 2 grupos: 12 hipermóveis (GH) e 15 não hipermóveis (GC). O eletrocardiograma foi realizado durante 10 minutos em supino e em pé para análise da variabilidade da frequência cardíaca. A banda de alta frequência (un) apresentou diminuição da atividade vagal no GH, p<0,03. O incremento de baixa frequência (un) foi maior no GH em relação ao GC, na manobra de ortostatismo, com aumento da atividade simpática, p<0,03. As voluntárias com hipermobilidade articular apresentaram resposta autonômica cardíaca alterada com hiporesponsividade vagal.

A comparative analysis of the encapsulated end-organs of mammalian skeletal muscles and of their sensory nerve endings

The encapsulated sensory endings of mammalian skeletal muscles are all mechanoreceptors. At the most basic functional level they serve as length sensors (muscle spindle primary and secondary endings), tension sensors (tendon organs), and pressure or vibration sensors (lamellated corpuscles). At a higher functional level, the differing roles of individual muscles in, for example, postural adjustment and locomotion might be expected to be reflected in characteristic complements of the various end-organs, their sensory endings and afferent nerve fibres. This has previously been demonstrated with regard to the number of muscle-spindle capsules; however, information on the other types of end-organ, as well as the complements of primary and secondary endings of the spindles themselves, is sporadic and inconclusive regarding their comparative provision in different muscles. Our general conclusion that muscle-specific variability in the provision of encapsulated sensory endings does exist demonstrates the necessity for the acquisition of more data of this type if we are to understand the underlying adaptive relationships between motor control and the structure and function of skeletal muscle. The present quantitative and comparative analysis of encapsulated muscle afferents is based on teased, silver-impregnated preparations. We begin with a statistical analysis of the number and distribution of muscle-spindle afferents in hind-limb muscles of the cat, particularly tenuissimus. We show that: (i) taking account of the necessity for at least one primary ending to be present, muscles differ significantly in the mean number of additional afferents per spindle capsule; (ii) the frequency of occurrence of spindles with different sensory complements is consistent with a stochastic, rather than deterministic, developmental process; and (iii) notwithstanding the previous finding, there is a differential distribution of spindles intramuscularly such that the more complex ones tend to be located closer to the main divisions of the nerve. Next, based on a sample of tendon organs from several hind-foot muscles of the cat, we demonstrate the existence in at least a large proportion of tendon organs of a structural substrate to account for multiple spike-initiation sites and pacemaker switching, namely the distribution of sensory terminals supplied by the different first-order branches of the Ib afferent to separate, parallel, tendinous compartments of individual tendon organs. We then show that the numbers of spindles, tendon organs and paciniform corpuscles vary independently in a sample of (mainly) hind-foot muscles of the cat. Grouping muscles by anatomical region in the cat indicated the existence of a gradual proximo-distal decline in the overall average size of the afferent complement of muscle spindles from axial through hind limb to intrinsic foot muscles, but with considerable muscle-specific variability. Finally, we present some comparative data on muscle-spindle afferent complements of rat, rabbit and guinea pig, one particularly notable feature being the high incidence of multiple primary endings in the rat.

Computational motor control: feedback and accuracy

Speed/accuracy trade-off is a ubiquitous phenomenon in motor behaviour, which has been ascribed to the presence of signal-dependent noise (SDN) in motor commands. Although this explanation can provide a quantitative account of many aspects of motor variability, including Fitts' law, the fact that this law is frequently violated, e.g. during the acquisition of new motor skills, remains unexplained. Here, we describe a principled approach to the influence of noise on motor behaviour, in which motor variability results from the interplay between sensory and motor execution noises in an optimal feedback-controlled system. In this framework, we first show that Fitts' law arises due to signal-dependent motor noise (SDN(m)) when sensory (proprioceptive) noise is low, e.g. under visual feedback. Then we show that the terminal variability of non-visually guided movement can be explained by the presence of signal-dependent proprioceptive noise. Finally, we show that movement accuracy can be controlled by opposite changes in signal-dependent sensory (SDN(s)) and SDN(m), a phenomenon that could be ascribed to muscular co-contraction. As the model also explains kinematics, kinetics, muscular and neural characteristics of reaching movements, it provides a unified framework to address motor variability.

Spinal and supraspinal effects of activity in ligament afferents

In this paper available knowledge on effects from joint and ligament afferents on spinal neurones and pathways are briefly reviewed, and possible functional implications discussed. Ligament afferents may contribute to joint stability, muscle coordination and proprioception through direct polysynaptic reflex effects onto ascending pathways and skeletomotoneurones, and/or indirectly via reflex actions on the gamma-muscle spindle system. Theoretical and experimental evidence indicate that ligament afferents, together with afferents from other joint structures, muscles and the skin, provide the CNS with information on movements and posture through ensemble coding mechanisms, rather than via modality specific private pathways. The existence and functional relevance of ligamentomuscular protective reflexes, that are triggered when the ligament is threatened by potentially harmful loads, has been seriously questioned. It seems more likely that peripheral sensory inputs from ligament afferents participate in a continuous control of the muscle activity through feedforward, or preprogramming, mechanisms. In line with these ideas it has been suggested that ligament mechanoreceptors have an important role in muscle coordination and in the reflex regulation of the functional joint stability, by contributing to the preprogramming of the muscle stiffness through reflex modulation of the gamma-muscle spindle system.

Patterns in the brain. Neuronal population coding in the somatosensory system

The aim of this article is to review some basic principles of neural coding, with an emphasis on mechanisms of stimulus representation in ensembles of neurons. The theory of "across-neuron response patterns" (ANRPs), first suggested by Thomas Young (1802) and fully developed by Robert Erickson (1963-2000), is summarized and applied to the problem of coding in primary afferent fibers and cortical neurons of the somatosensory system. The basic premise of the theory is that precise information about stimulus features cannot be encoded by single neurons, but is encoded by patterns of activity across populations of neurons. Different stimuli produce uniquely different patterns of ensemble activity (ANRPs)-discrimination between two stimuli is based on the absolute difference in total amount of activity (neural mass difference) of the ANRPs for those stimuli. Review of the literature shows that ANRPs and related population codes can accurately represent and differentiate among various stimulus parameters that cannot be distinguished by single neurons alone. Finally, the behavior of neuronal ensembles can be used to account for the sensory-perceptual changes associated with plasticity of thalamocortical circuits following selective sensorimotor deprivation or experience.

Alterations in information transmission in ensembles of primary muscle spindle afferents after muscle fatigue in heteronymous muscle

This study showed that fatigue of the ipsilateral medial gastrocnemius muscle caused a clear-cut reduction in the ability of ensembles of primary muscle spindle afferents from the lateral gastrocnemius muscle to discriminate between muscle stretches of varying amplitude. The results were probably caused by reflex-mediated effects from chemosensitive group III and IV afferents onto the gamma-motoneurons projecting to lateral gastrocnemius muscle spindles. The experiments were conducted on seven cats anaesthetized with alpha-chloralose and a total of 41 primary muscle spindle afferents from the lateral gastrocnemius were registered. Afferents were simultaneously recorded in ensembles of three to 10 afferents. A method based on principal component analysis and algorithms for quantification of stimulus discrimination in ensembles of muscle afferents was used prior to, immediately following and five or more minutes after muscle fatigue had been induced to the ipsilateral medial gastrocnemius muscle. It is well established that the primary muscle spindle afferents play an important role in proprioception and kinaesthesia. Therefore the decrease in the accuracy of the information transmitted by ensembles of primary muscle spindle afferents caused by fatigue in an ipsilateral muscle implies concomitant effects on proprioception and kinaesthesia.

The information transmitted by ensembles of primary spindle afferents is diminished when ketamine is used as a pre-anaesthetic

The effect of pre-anaesthetic ketamine on ensemble coding of different stimuli consisting of muscle stretches of various amplitudes was studied for ensembles of simultaneously recorded primary muscle spindle afferents (MSAs). The experiments were conducted on 8 alpha-chloralose anaesthetised cats. Three of the cats received a pre-anaesthetic dose of ketamine (25 mg/kg) injected subcutaneously (ketamine group), while the remaining five animals did not (non-ketamine group). Data for ensemble coding were collected both before and after cutting the ventral root. A method based on principal component analysis and algorithms was used to quantify stimulus discrimination and an ANOVA tested differences between groups as well as differences due to ventral root cutting. When the fusimotor supply was intact, a general trend of an increase in the ability to discriminate stimuli with increasing ensemble size was observed for both groups, however, this trend was significantly greater for the non-ketamine group as compared to the ketamine group. When the ventral root was cut, the discrimination pattern for the non-ketamine group decreased significantly (as compared to before ventral root cutting), however, no change occurred for the ketamine group. Consequently, no difference in discrimination pattern was detected between groups after ventral root cutting. The reduction in information transmitted by ensembles of primary MSAs when ketamine is used as a pre-anaesthetic may suggest that ketamine elicits an adverse affect on the fusimotor system.
