Structural consequences of bonding in transition metal carbene complexes

N-Heterocyclic carbene and cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene ligated half-sandwich complexes of chromium(II) and chromium(I)

The synthesis and characterization of a series of Cr(II) N-Heterocyclic Carbene (NHC) complexes of the type [{Cr(NHC)Cl(μ-Cl)}2] and [(Cyp)Cr(NHC)X] (Cyp = η5-C5H5, cyclopentadienyl; η5-C5Me5, pentamethylcyclopentadienyl; X = Cl, η3-C3H5; NHC = IMeMe, IiPrMe, IMes, IDipp) as well as the cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene cAACMe ligated complexes [(η5-C5H5)Cr(cAACMe)X] (X = Cl, NPh2), [(η5-C9H7)Cr(cAACMe)Cl] (C9H7 = Ind, indenyl) and [(η5-C13H9)Cr(cAACMe)Cl] (C13H9 = Fl, fluorenyl) are reported. The reduction of [(η5-C5Me5)Cr(IMeMe)Cl] with KC8 in the presence of CO afforded the NHC ligated Cr(I) metallo-radical [(η5-C5Me5)Cr(IMeMe)(CO)2]. Quantum chemical calculations performed on [(η5-C5Me5)Cr(IMeMe)(CO)2] confirm for this complex a predominantly chromium centered radical.

σ or π? Bonding interactions in a series of rhenium metallotetrylenes

Salt metathesis reactions between a low-valent rhenium(i) complex, Na[Re(η5-Cp)(BDI)] (BDI = N,N'-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-3,5-dimethyl-β-diketiminate), and a series of amidinate-supported tetrylenes of the form ECl[PhC(NtBu)2] (E = Si, Ge, Sn) led to rhenium metallotetrylenes Re(E[PhC(NtBu)2])(η5-Cp)(BDI) (E = Si (1a), Ge (2), Sn (4)) with varying extents of Re-E multiple bonding. Whereas the rhenium-stannylene 4 adopts a σ-metallotetrylene arrangement featuring a Re-E single bond, the rhenium-silylene (1a) and -germylene (2) both engage in π-interactions to form short Re-E multiple bonds. Temperature was found to play a crucial role in reactions between Na[Re(η5-Cp)(BDI)] and SiCl[PhC(NtBu)2], as manipulation of reaction conditions led to isolation of an unusual rhenium-silane, (BDI)Re(μ-η5:η1-C5H4)(SiH[PhC(NtBu)2]) (1b) and a dinitrogen bridged rhenium-silylene, (η5-Cp)(BDI)Re(μ-N2)Si[PhC(NtBu)2] (1c), in addition to 1a. Finally, the reaction of Na[Re(η5-Cp)(BDI)] with GeCl2·dioxane led to a rare μ2-tetrelido complex, μ2-Ge[Re(η5-Cp)(BDI)]2 (3). Bonding interactions within these complexes are discussed through the lens of various spectroscopic, structural, and computational investigations.

Transition metal chemistry of heavier group 14 congener triple-bonded complexes: syntheses and reactivity

The diversification and synthetic utility of carbyne complexes in organometallic chemistry and catalysis are well recognized, but the syntheses of related heavier group 14 alkylidyne complexes are a recent advancement. A wide range of metal-ylidyne M[triple bond, length as m-dash]E (E = Si-Pb) complexes were synthesized and characterized spectroscopically. The synthetic methodology generally involves elimination or substitution chemistry between metallates and suitable group 14 precursors. The reluctance in forming triple bonded complexes makes this field quite fascinating and challenging. This article gives a brief overview of the pioneering reports followed by detailed information on the latest developments of complexes having a triple bond between a metal and heavier group 14 elements (Si, Ge, Sn, and Pb). Their synthesis and chemistry of the earlier reports followed by recent progress in this field will be discussed. Furthermore, their unique structures and bonding properties will be described based on spectroscopic and theoretical studies.

Physical Nature of Differential Spin-State Stabilization of Carbenes by Hydrogen and Halogen Bonding: A Domain-Based Pair Natural Orbital Coupled Cluster Study

The variation in the singlet-triplet energy gap of diphenylcarbene (DPC) upon interaction with hydrogen (water and methanol) or halogen bond (XCF3, X = Cl, Br, I) donors to form van der Waals (vdW) complexes is investigated in relation to the electrostatic and dispersion components of such intermolecular interactions. The domain-based local pair natural orbital coupled cluster method, DLPNO-CCSD(T), is used for calculating accurate single-triplet energy gaps and interaction energies for both spin states. The local energy decomposition scheme is used to provide an accurate quantification to the various interaction energy components at the DLPNO-CCSD(T) level. It is shown that the formation of vdW adducts stabilizes the singlet state of DPC, and in the case of water, methanol, and ICF3, it reverses the ground state from triplet to singlet. Electrostatic interactions are significant in both spin states, but preferentially stabilize the singlet state. For methanol and ClCF3, London dispersion forces have the opposite effect, stabilizing preferentially the triplet state. The quantification of the energetic components of the interactions through the local energy decomposition analysis correlates well with experimental findings and provides the basis for more elaborate treatments of microsolvation in carbenes.

Gold carbene or carbenoid: is there a difference?

By reviewing the recent progress on the elucidation of the structure of gold carbenes and the definitions of metal carbenes and carbenoids, we recommend to use the term gold carbene to describe gold carbene-like intermediates, regardless of whether the carbene or carbocation extreme resonance dominates. Gold carbenes, because of the weak metal-to-carbene π-back-donation and their strongly electrophilic reactivity, could be classified into the broader family of Fischer carbenes, although their behavior and properties are very specific.
