Dissolution of Molybdenum in Hydrogen Peroxide: A Thermodynamic, Kinetic and Microscopic Study of a Green Process for 99mTc Production

^99mTc-based radiopharmaceuticals are the most commonly used medical radioactive tracers in nuclear medicine for diagnostic imaging. Due to the expected global shortage of ⁹⁹Mo, the parent radionuclide from which ^99mTc is produced, new production methods should be developed. The SORGENTINA-RF (SRF) project aims at developing a prototypical medium-intensity D-T 14-MeV fusion neutron source specifically designed for production of medical radioisotopes with a focus on ⁹⁹Mo. The scope of this work was to develop an efficient, cost-effective and green procedure for dissolution of solid molybdenum in hydrogen peroxide solutions compatible for ^99mTc production via the SRF neutron source. The dissolution process was extensively studied for two different target geometries: pellets and powder. The first showed better characteristics and properties for the dissolution procedure, and up to 100 g of pellets were successfully dissolved in 250-280 min. The dissolution mechanism on the pellets was investigated by means of scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. After the procedure, sodium molybdate crystals were characterized via X-ray diffraction, Raman and infrared spectroscopy and the high purity of the compound was established by means of inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy. The study confirmed the feasibility of the procedure for production of ^99mTc in SRF as it is very cost-effective, with minimal consumption of peroxide and controlled low temperature.

Molybdenum, molybdenum oxides, and their electrochemistry

The electrochemical behaviors of molybdenum and its oxides, both in bulk and thin film dimensions, are critical because of their widespread applications in steels, electrocatalysts, electrochromic materials, batteries, sensors, and solar cells. An important area of current interest is electrodeposited CIGS-based solar cells where a molybdenum/glass electrode forms the back contact. Surprisingly, the basic electrochemistry of molybdenum and its oxides has not been reviewed with due attention. In this Review, we assess the scattered information. The potential and pH dependent active, passive, and transpassive behaviors of molybdenum in aqueous media are explained. The major surface oxide species observed, reversible redox transitions of the surface oxides, pseudocapacitance and catalytic reduction are discussed along with carefully conducted experimental results on a typical molybdenum glass back contact employed in CIGS-based solar cells. The applications of molybdenum oxides and the electrodeposition of molybdenum are briefly reviewed.

Peroxomolybdate(vi)–citrate and –malate complex interconversions by pH-dependence. Synthetic, structural and spectroscopic studies

The reaction of potassium molybdate(VI) with biologically relevant ligands, citric and malic acids, in the presence of H2O2 was investigated for the effect of pH variations on the product pattern. That with citric acid led to the formation of the monomeric complex K4[MoO(O2)2(cit)].4H2O (1) in the pH range 7-9, and dimer K5[MoO(O2)(2-)(Hcit)H(Hcit)(O2)2OMo].6H2O (2) (H4cit = citric acid) at pH 3-6 through carboxylate-carboxylic acid hydrogen bonding. The relation with the previously identified K4[MoO3(cit)].2H2O (4) and K4[Mo2O5(Hcit)2].4H2O (5) were shown. These and other intermediates were shown to react in the pH range 3-6 to give a more stable species 2; the reaction sequence was demonstrated either by the protonation from 1 or the deprotonation of [MoO(O2)2(H2cit)](2-) (8). Evidence that 2 exists as a dimer in solution is presented. The reaction with (S)-malic acid afforded Delta-K(2n)[MoO(O2)2((S)-Hmal)]n.nH2O (3) (H3mal = malic acid) that was oxidized further to oxalato molybdate (11) by H2O2. The three complexes 1-3 were characterized by elemental analysis, UV, IR and NMR spectroscopies, in addition to the X-ray structural studies that show citrate and malate being coordinated as bidentate ligands via alpha-alkoxyl and alpha-carboxylate groups. The formation of these complexes is dictated by pH and their thermal stabilities varied with the coordinated hydroxycarboxylate ligands.

Molecular structure of the molybdenum oxo-diperoxo compound MoO(O(2))(2)(OPy)(H(2)O): a computational and X-ray study

We have carried out a combined experimental and theoretical study of the molecular structure of the MoO(O(2))(2)(OPy)(H(2)O) coordination compound using X-ray crystallography and DFT-B3LYP computational method, respectively. The MoO(O(2))(2)(OPy)(H(2)O) complex crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pmna with Z = 4, a = 6.9001(9) A, b = 8.0471(1) A, c = 16.227(2) A, V = 901.0(2) A(3), and the X-ray data analysis yields a bipyramidal-pentagonal coordination polyhedron for the Mo atom. The pyridine N-oxide (OPy) ligand occupies the equatorial position, with the oxygen atom of this ligand being located in the same plane as the four peroxo oxygen atoms. The H(2)O ligand is situated trans to the oxo group, forming intermolecular hydrogen bonds with peroxo groups belonging to two adjacent complexes. In our theoretical approach these intermolecular interactions were taken into account by including two methanol molecules which form hydrogen bonds with the water ligand leading to a good agreement between the calculated and the experimental geometry. Our results suggest that it is necessary to take into account the presence of these interactions in order to reconcile the theoretical results to the experimental data, in particular the distance between Mo and the oxygen of water ligand. These results seem to be a general feature for analogous bis-peroxo complexes that have been reported in the literature.
