Intermediary metabolism in a lizard, Calotes versicolor: role of thyroid hormones

In Calotes versicolor, thyroidectomy did not alter the blood glucose level, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH liver and heart), acid phosphatase (Ac.Pase liver and kidney), and alkaline phosphatase (Alk.Pase liver and kidney) activities; significantly decreased the activities of glucose-6-phosphatase (G-6-Pase liver and kidney), glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT liver and heart), glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT liver), and urea concentration (liver and kidney); and increased liver cholesterol when compared to sham-operated controls. Administration of L-thyroxine (L-T4) or triiodo-L-thyronine (L-T3) to thyroidectomized lizards significantly stimulated the activities of G-6-Pase, Ac.Pase, GOT and GPT, concentration of glucose and urea, and decreased the cholesterol level. While the activities of all the enzymes studied and cholesterol level remain unchanged, glucose and urea levels decreased and increased, respectively, in thyroidectomized animals treated with actinomycin D. Chloramphenicol treatment did not affect any of the parameters studied. Simultaneous injections of actinomycin D or chloramphenicol with L-T4 prevented the hormone-stimulated activities of Ac.Pase, GOT, and GPT while the activities of LDH, G-6-Pase, Alk.Pase, glucose, urea, and cholesterol levels remain unchanged.

Influence of thyroid hormones and testosterone on the activities of hepatic mitochondrial enzymes in the Indian garden lizard, Calotes versicolor

Thyroidectomy and castration in Calotes versicolor significantly decreased the activities of hepatic mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase, alpha-glycerophosphate dehydrogenase (alpha-GPDH), and succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) when compared to sham-operated controls. Administration of thyroid hormones in thyroidectomized lizards and testosterone in castrated specimens stimulated the activities of all three enzymes studied. Chloramphenicol, when injected with thyroxine prevented the hormone-stimulated activities of cytochrome oxidase and SDH, while actinomycin D and chloramphenicol, when administered along with testosterone propionate (low dose) prevented the testosterone-stimulated activities of cytochrome oxidase and alpha-GPDH.

Salinity adaptation in fish: effect of thyroxine on mitochondrial status

Upon transfer of the fresh-water fish, Sarotherodon mossambicus, to 50% sea water, extensive changes take place in the functions of the gill mitochondria. The changes are (i) loss of ADP/O and RCI; (ii) loss of the ability to contract upon addition of ATP-Mg2+; (iii) lowered energy-dependent 45Ca uptake; (iv) increased amino acid incorporation capacity; (v) increased adenine nucleotide content; and (vi) a higher endogenous Ca2+ content. Administration of thyroxine to the fish reversed these changes, and the effect of thyroxine was also not transient. It is suggested that thyroxine promotes mitochondriogenesis, thereby effecting a restoration of the stress-affected mitochondrial functions.

Role of thyroid in tissue respiration of birds

Thyroidectomy after 1 week, 1 month, and 13 months significantly depressed and low level of L-T4 significantly elevated the oxygen uptake of the liver and skeletal muscle of spotted munia and common myna. A higher dose of L-T4 had no effect on the rate of respiration. A reexamination of the published results on submammalian vertebrates together with those presented here suggests that an uniform pattern of response of skeletal muscle emerges if the values from thyroidectomized animals are compared not only with the final controls but also with the initial controls. It is, therefore, suggested that all the earlier works be reexamined and reinterpreted.
