An infrared and Raman spectroscopic study of some metal pyridine tetracyanonickelate complexes

4-Mercaptopyridine-Modified Sensor for the Sensitive Electrochemical Detection of Mercury Ions

As a highly toxic heavy metal ion, mercury ion (Hg²⁺) pollution has caused serious harm to the environment and human health. In this paper, 4-mercaptopyridine (4-MPY) was selected as the sensing material and decorated on the surface of a gold electrode. Trace Hg²⁺ could be detected by both differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) methods. The proposed sensor displayed a wide detection range from 0.01 μg/L to 500 μg/L with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.002 μg/L by EIS measurements. Combined with molecular simulations and electrochemical analyses, the chelating mechanism between Hg²⁺ and 4-MPY was explored. Through the analysis of binding energy (BE) values and stability constants, 4-MPY showed an excellent selectivity for Hg²⁺. In the presence of Hg²⁺, the coordination of Hg²⁺ with the pyridine nitrogen of 4-MPY was generated at the sensing region, which caused a change in the electrochemical activity of the electrode surface. Due to the strong specific binding capability, the proposed sensor featured excellent selectivity and an anti-interference capability. Furthermore, the practicality of the sensor for Hg²⁺ detection was validated with the samples of tap water and pond water, which demonstrated its potential application for on-site environmental detection.

Spin-State Modulation in FeII -Based Hofmann-Type Coordination Polymers: From Molecules to Materials

Spin crossover complexes that reversibly interconvert between two stable states imitate a binary state of 0 and 1, delivering a promising possibility to address the data processing concept in smart materials. Thus, a comprehensive understanding of the modulation of magnetic transition between high spin and low spin and the factors responsible for stabilizing the spin states is an essential theme in modern materials design. In this context, the present review attempts to provide a concise outline of the design strategy employed at the molecular level for fine-tuning the spin-state switching in Fe^II -based Hofmann-type coordination polymers and their effects on the optical and magnetic response. In addition, development towards the nanoscale architectures of HCPs, i. e., in terms of nanoparticles and thin films, are emphasized to bridge the gap between the laboratory and reality.

MII (M = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni and Cu) complexes with a chromone-derived neutral ligand: synthesis, structural characterization, photocatalytic and mycobacterial activity studies

This work provides the coordination chemistry of the resulting compound of 2-(2-furyl)-3-hydroxychromone and nicotinoyl chloride with first row transition metal ions. Good performance in H2 evolution was shown by the copper-containing photocatalyst.

Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Optophysiology Nanofibers for the Detection of Heavy Metals in Single Breast Cancer Cells

Mercury(II) ions (Hg²⁺) and silver ions (Ag⁺) are two of the most hazardous pollutants causing serious damage to human health. Here, we constructed surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-active nanofibers covered with 4-mercaptopyridine (4-Mpy)-modified gold nanoparticles to detect Hg²⁺ and Ag⁺. Experimental evidence suggests that the observed spectral changes originate from the combined effect of (i) the coordination between the nitrogen on 4-Mpy and the metal ions and (ii) the 4-Mpy molecular orientation (from flatter to more perpendicular with respect to the metal surface). The relative intensity of a pair of characteristic Raman peaks (at ∼428 and ∼708 cm^-1) was used to quantify the metal ion concentration, greatly increasing the reproducibility of the measurement compared to signal-on or signal-off detection based on a single SERS peak. The detection limit of this method for Hg²⁺ is lower than that for the Ag⁺ (5 vs 100 nM), which can be explained by the stronger interaction energy between Hg²⁺ and N compared to Ag⁺ and N, as demonstrated by density functional theory calculations. The Hg²⁺ and Ag⁺ ions can be masked by adding ethylenediaminetetraacetate and Cl^-, respectively, to the Hg²⁺ and Ag⁺ samples. The good sensitivity, high reproducibility, and excellent selectivity of these nanosensors were also demonstrated. Furthermore, detection of Hg²⁺ in living breast cancer cells at the subcellular level is possible, thanks to the nanometric size of the herein described SERS nanosensors, allowing high spatial resolution and minimal cell damage.

Surface morphology-induced spin-crossover-inactive high-spin state in a coordination framework

Here we report a surface morphology-induced spin state control in ultrathin films of a spin-crossover (SCO) material. The surface microstructure of film domains exhibited selectivity, to stabilize the SCO-active high-spin (HS) or SCO-inactive high-spin (HS2) states. To date, the latter has only been confirmed in the bulk counterpart at gigapascal pressure.

Influence of ancillary ligands on preferential geometry and biomimetic catalytic activity in manganese(III)-catecholate systems: A combined experimental and theoretical study

The present report describes the synthesis and structural characterizations of six new manganese(III) complexes with redox-active tetrachlorocatecholate ligand in the presence of different ancillary ligands (pyridines and imidazole). X-ray crystal structure analysis reveals that the geometry of manganese(III) centres in 1 and 2 is essentially square pyramidal, while it is discrete octahedron in compounds 3-6. These preferential structural diversities in these systems have been critically analysed by theoretical calculations. Remarkably, the characterization of both π⋯π stacking interactions and MnMn bonds in the supramolecular dimeric aggregates in the solid state in 1 and 2 by means of the Bader's theory of "atoms in molecules" (AIM) is quite interesting as that nicely corroborates the experimental fact. All the complexes are active toward the phenoxazinone synthase like activity and the detailed kinetic analysis was performed to get better insight into their catalytic efficiency. Electrochemical property of these complexes as well as different donor property of the ancillary ligands clearly establish that the ease of reduction of the metal centre i.e., the catalytic ability is favoured when the metal centre is bonded to the electron deficient pyridyl systems. EPR spectroscopy and theoretical study are further helpful to get insight into origin of the catalytic activity in these compounds. The present report overall highlights that tuning of the geometry and catalytic activity of manganese(III) complexes with tetrachlorocatecholate ligand can be attained by the introduction of different substitutions in ancillary pyridine ligands.

Synthesis, spectroscopic, thermal and structural properties of [M(3-aminopyridine)2Ni(μ-CN)2(CN)2]n (M(II)=Co and Cu) heteropolynuclear cyano-bridged complexes

Two novel cyano-bridged heteropolynuclear complexes, [Co(3-aminopyridine)2Ni(μ-CN)2(CN)2]n and [Cu(3-aminopyridine)2Ni(μ-CN)2(CN)2]n have been synthesized and characterized by elemental, thermal, FT-IR and FT-Raman spectroscopies. The structures of complexes have been determined by X-ray powder diffraction. The FT-IR and FT-Raman spectra of complexes have been recorded in the region of 3500-400cm(-1) and 3500-100cm(-1), respectively. General information was acquired about structural properties of these complexes from FT-IR and FT-Raman spectra by considering changes at characteristic peaks of the cyano group and 3AP. The splitting of the ν(CN) stretching bands in the FT-IR spectra for complexes indicates the presence of terminal and bridging cyanides. The thermal behaviors of these complexes have been also investigated in the range of 25-950°C using TG and DTG methods. Magnetic susceptibility measurements were made at room temperature using Gouy-balance.

Vibrational spectra, powder X-ray diffractions and physical properties of cyanide complexes with 1-ethylimidazole

The heteronuclear tetracyanonickelate(II) complexes of the type [M(etim)Ni(CN)4]n (hereafter, abbreviated as M-Ni-etim, M=Mn(II), Fe(II) or Co(II); etim=1-ethylimidazole, C5H8N2) were prepared in powder form and characterized by FT-IR and Raman spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), thermal (TG; DTG and DTA), and elemental analysis techniques. The structures of these complexes were elucidated using vibrational spectra and powder X-ray diffraction patterns with the peak assignment to provide a better understanding of the structures. It is shown that the spectra are consistent with a proposed crystal structure for these compounds derived from powder X-ray diffraction measurements. Vibrational spectra of the complexes were presented and discussed with respect to the internal modes of both the etim and the cyanide ligands. The C, H and N analyses were carried out for all the complexes. Thermal behaviors of these complexes were followed using TG, DTG and DTA curves in the temperature range 30-700 °C in the static air atmosphere. The FT-IR, Raman spectra, thermal and powder X-ray analyses revealed no significant differences between the single crystal and powder forms. Additionally, electrical and magnetic properties of the complexes were investigated. The FT-IR and Raman spectroscopy, PXRD, thermal and elemental analyses results propose that these complexes are similar in structure to the Hofmann-type complexes.

A novel one-dimensional manganese(II) coordination polymer containing both dicyanamide and pyrazinamide ligands: synthesis, spectroscopic investigations, X-ray studies and evaluation of biological activities

A novel 1D coordination polymer {[Mn(μ1,5-dca)2(PZA)2](PZA)2}n, 1, has been synthesized and characterized by single crystal X-ray crystallography. The coordination mode of dicyanamide (dca) and pyrazinamide (PZA) ligands was inferred by IR spectroscopy. The compound 1 was evaluated for in vitro antimycobacterial and antitumor activities. It demonstrated better in vitro activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis than pyrazinamide and its MIC value was determined. Complex 1 was also screened for its in vitro antitumor activity towards LM3 and LP07 murine cancer cell lines. In addition, the antibacterial activity of complex 1 has been tested against Gram(+) and Gram(-) bacteria and it has shown promising broad range anti-bacterial activity.

Molecular iodine adsorption within Hofmann-type structures M(L)[M′(CN)4] (M = Ni, Co; M′ = Ni, Pd, Pt): impact of their composition

Hofmann-type clathrate frameworks MII(pz)[M′II(CN)₄] are able to efficiently and reversibly capture iodine in the gas phase and in solution.

Chemical speciation of heavy metals by surface-enhanced Raman scattering spectroscopy: identification and quantification of inorganic- and methyl-mercury in water

Chemical speciation of heavy metals has become extremely important in environmental and analytical research because of the strong dependence that toxicity, environmental mobility, persistence and bioavailability of these pollutants have on their specific chemical forms. Novel nano-optical-based detection strategies, capable of overcoming the intrinsic limitations of well-established analytic methods for the quantification of total metal ion content, have been reported, but the speciation of different chemical forms has not yet been achieved. Here, we report the first example of a SERS-based sensor for chemical speciation of toxic metal ions in water at trace levels. Specifically, the inorganic Hg(2+) and the more toxicologically relevant methylmercury (CH₃Hg(+)) are selected as analytical targets. The sensing platform consists of a self-assembled monolayer of 4-mercaptopyridine (MPY) on highly SERS-active and robust hybrid plasmonic materials formed by a dense layer of interacting gold nanoparticles anchored onto polystyrene microbeads. The co-ordination of Hg(2+) and CH₃Hg(+) to the nitrogen atom of the MPY ring yields characteristic changes in the vibrational SERS spectra of the organic chemoreceptor that can be qualitatively and quantitatively correlated to the presence of the two different mercury forms.

Antimycobacterial and antitumor activities of palladium(II) complexes containing isonicotinamide (isn): X-ray structure of trans-[Pd(N3)2(isn)(2)]

Complexes of the type trans-[PdX(2)(isn)(2)] {X = Cl (1), N(3) (2), SCN (3), NCO (4); isn = isonicotinamide} were synthesized and evaluated for in vitro antimycobacterial and antitumor activities. The coordination mode of the isonicotinamide and the pseudohalide ligands was inferred by IR spectroscopy. Single crystal X-ray diffraction determination on 2 showed that coordination geometry around Pd(II) is nearly square planar, with the ligands in a trans configuration. All the compounds demonstrated better in vitro activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis than isonicotinamide and pyrazinamide. Among the complexes, compound 2 was found to be the most active with MIC of 35.89 μM. Complexes 1-4 were also screened for their in vitro antitumor activity towards LM3 and LP07 murine cancer cell lines.

Structural investigation of dichlorobis(benzimidazole)Zn(II) complex

The molecular structure of the title complex [ZnCl2(C7H6N2)2] was investigated by X-ray diffraction and IR spectroscopy. The Zn(II) complex crystallizes triclinically (P1̅ (no 2); a = 7.440(2) Å, b = 7.734(2) Å, c = 13.3127(4) Å, α = 85.91(2)°, β = 85.97(2)°, γ = 83.05(5)°, Z = 3; V = 757.3(3) Å3). In the molecular structure, the Zn atom is coordinated tetrahedrally by two Cl– anions and two benzimidazole ligands.

Infrared and Raman study of some isonicotinic acid metal(II) halide and tetracyanonickelate complexes

In this study the M(IN)(2)Ni(CN)(4) [where M: Co, Ni, and Cd, and IN: isonicotinic acid, abbreviated to M-Ni-IN] tetracyanonickelate and some metal halide complexes with the following stoichiometries: M(IN)(6)X(2) (M: Co; X: Cl and Br, and M: Ni; X: Cl, Br and I) and Hg(IN)X(2) (X: Cl, Br, and I) were synthesized for the first time. Certain chemical formulas were determined using elemental analysis results. The FT-IR and Raman spectra of the metal halide complexes were reported in the 4000-0 cm(-1) region. The FT-IR spectra of tetracyanonickelate complexes were also reported in the 4000-400 cm(-1) region. Vibrational assignments were given for all the observed bands. For a given series of isomorphous complexes, the sum of the difference between the values of the vibrational modes of the free isonicotinic acid and coordinated ligand was found to increase in the order of the second ionization potentials of metals. The frequency shifts were also found to be depending on the halogen. The proposed structure of tetracyanonickelate complexes consists of polymeric layers of /M-Ni(CN)(4)/(infinity) with the isonicotinic acid molecules bound directly to the metal atom.
