Investigations of the reinstatement of extinguished fear

Recovery of conditioned fear by a single postextinction shock: Effect of similarity of shock contexts and of time following extinction

Subjects in six experimental groups (n = 16 each) received one-trial passive avoidance (PA) training in which shock was delivered upon movement from a white wooden floor compartment to a black grid compartment. Then fear was extinguished (30 min) in the black compartment. After either 24 or 168 h, all the groups were treated in a room distinctively different from the training room. At each interval, one group received a shock in an apparatus similar to the conditioning box, another received a shock in a dissimilar apparatus, and another was placed in a neutral box. A PA test trial in the training apparatus indicated reinstatement of extinguished fear in all the groups given a postextinction shock except the 24-h dissimilar group. Control groups revealed that the extinction treatment was effective and that spontaneous recovery was not evident. The results were explained in terms of classical conditioning, stimulus generalization, and the broadening (flattening) of stimulus generalization gradients with time.

Context preexposure influences the effectiveness of feedback stimuli in avoidance learning

According to the effective reinforcement theory of avoidance learning, there is a positive relationship between the level of context fear and the effectiveness of feedback stimuli. The present research used different preexposure treatments to manipulate context fear and to evaluate the effects of feedback stimuli in two-way avoidance learning. Rat subjects received nonreinforced preexposure either to the nonvisual context cues (avoidance apparatus with the houselights extinguished), to the visual context cues (avoidance apparatus with the houselights on but with a Plexiglas floor covering the grids), or to a neutral box. During subsequent avoidance training conditioned stimulus termination was delayed for 5s after an instrumental response and either a flashing light or darkness was presented as a feedback stimulus. Without preexposure, darkness produced better avoidance performance than did the flashing light. Preexposure to the visual context cues decreased the effectiveness of darkness as a feedback stimulus. However, preexposure to either the visual or to the nonvisual context cues facilitated avoidance performance when a flashing light was used as a feedback stimulus. The results suggest that the effects of a feedback stimulus may be dependent upon the amount and source of context fear.

Common processes may contribute to extinction and habituation

Psychologists routinely attribute the characteristics of conditioned behavior to complicated cognitive processes. For example, many of the characteristics of behavior undergoing extinction have been attributed to retrieval from memory. The authors argue that these characteristics may result from the simpler process of habituation. In particular, conditioned responding may decrease during extinction partially because habituation occurs to the stimuli that control responding when those stimuli are presented repeatedly or for a prolonged time (e.g., the experimental context, the conditioned stimulus in classical conditioning). This idea is parsimonious, has face validity, and evokes only processes that are well established by other evidence. In addition, behavior undergoing extinction shows 12 of the fundamental properties of behavior undergoing habituation. However, this model probably cannot provide a complete theory of extinction. It provides no obvious explanation for some of the other characteristics of extinguished behavior.

ACTH- and noncontingent footshock-induced recovery of an extinguished passive avoidance response

The effectiveness of both exogenous adrenocorticotropic hormone and noncontingent footshock as agents for the recovery of an extinguished passive avoidance response was assessed. Six groups of male Holtzman rats were administered either adrenocorticotropic hormone (4IU), or a single noncontingent footshock, either 15 minutes, 24 hours, or 7 days prior to retention testing. Two control groups received an injection of the inactive gel vehicle either 15 minutes or 7 days prior to test. Adrenocorticotropic hormone administered either 15 minutes or 24 hours prior to test, as well as noncontingent footshock delivered 24 hours (but not 15 minutes) prior to test, served as effective reinstatement agents. Substantial "spontaneous recovery" of responding precluded evaluation of reinstatement effects at the 7 day retention interval. The persistence of the recovery for at least 24 hours is consistent with the notion that both adrenocorticotropic hormone and noncontingent footshock not only enhance memory retrieval of the original fear conditioning, but also cause the training memory to be further processed.
