Abstract
Electronic-cigarette (e-cig) vaping is a serious concern, as many pregnant women who vape consider it safe. However, little is known about the harmful effects of prenatal e-cig exposure on adult offspring, especially on extracellular-matrix (ECM) deposition and myogenesis in the lungs of offspring. We evaluated the biochemical and molecular implications of maternal exposure during pregnancy to e-cig aerosols on the adult offspring of both sexes, with a particular focus on pulmonary ECM remodeling and myogenesis. Pregnant CD-1 mice were exposed to e-cig aerosols with or without nicotine, throughout gestation, and lungs were collected from adult male and female offspring. Compared with the air-exposed control group, female mice exposed to e-cig aerosols, with or without nicotine, demonstrated increased lung protein abundance of LEF-1 (lymphoid enhancer-binding factor 1), fibronectin, and E-cadherin, whereas altered E-cadherin and PPARγ (peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ) levels were observed only in males exposed to e-cig aerosols with nicotine. Moreover, lipogenic and myogenic mRNAs were dysregulated in adult offspring in a sex-dependent manner. PAI-1 (plasminogen activator inhibitor-1), one of the ECM regulators, was significantly increased in females exposed prenatally to e-cig aerosols with nicotine and in males exposed to e-cig aerosols compared with control animals exposed to air. MMP9 (matrix metalloproteinase 9), a downstream target of PAI-1, was downregulated in both sexes exposed to e-cig aerosols with nicotine. No differences in lung histology were observed among any of the treatment groups. Overall, adult mice exposed prenatally to e-cig aerosols could be predisposed to developing pulmonary disease later in life. Thus, these findings suggest that vaping during pregnancy is unsafe and increases the propensity for later-life interstitial lung diseases.

Is ovarian reserve associated with body mass index and obesity in reproductive aged women? A meta-analysis. Menopause 2019; 25:1046-1055. Abstract
OBJECTIVE The associations of body mass index (BMI) and obesity with ovarian reserve are controversial. This systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to investigate the associations in reproductive-aged women. METHODS PubMed and Scopus were searched up to December, 2016. Original studies on the association of BMI with ovarian reserve markers, anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), inhibin β, and antral follicle count (AFC), either according to BMI categories or a continuous variable, were selected. Analyses were stratified into three groups based on polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and fertility status of women. RESULTS Of 4,055 records identified, 45 studies were eligible for inclusion. Comparing the obese with nonobese, the pooled mean differences (MDs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were -1.08 (95% CIs -1.52, -0.63) ng/mL for AMH, -0.22 (95% CIs -0.39, -0.06) mIU/mL for FSH, -0.09 (95% CIs -0.60, 0.42) for AFC, and -21.06 (95% CIs -41.18, -0.85) pg/mL for inhibin β in overall populations. The MDs were significant for AMH in fertile non-PCOS and PCOS women, and for FSH only in PCOS women. Fisher's Z showed significant correlations of BMI with AMH in the overall populations (-0.15 [95% CIs -0.20, -0.11]) and in all subgroups, and with FSH in the fertile non-PCOS women (-0.16 [95% CIs -0.28, -0.04]). CONCLUSION Ovarian reserve markers of AMH and FSH are significantly lower in obese than in nonobese women, and BMI is negatively correlated with AMH in all study populations, and with FSH in fertile non-PCOS subgroups. PCOS and fertility status do not appear to affect the associations.

Abstract
The metabolic syndrome (MS) is a clustering of cardiovascular risk factors, with insulin resistance as a major feature. This syndrome has been variously defined, but generally consists of 3 or more of the following components: hyperglycemia, hypertension, hypertriglyceridemia, low HDL, and increased abdominal circumference and/or BMI at >30 kg/m(2). The WHO criteria require the presence of insulin resistance to make the diagnosis. The current review focuses particularly on the association of the MS and the proinflammatory state as well as treatment options to prevent the development of coronary heart disease (CHD). Chronic inflammation is frequently associated with the MS. Inflammatory markers that have been associated with MS include hs-CRP, TNF-alpha, fibrinogen, and IL-6, among others. The link between inflammation and the MS is not fully understood. One postulated mechanism is that these cytokines are released into the circulation by adipose tissue, stimulating hepatic CRP production. The prothrombotic molecule PAI-1 is also increased in the MS. Adiponectin, produced exclusively by adipocytes, is decreased in obesity. The association of these proinflammatory and prothrombotic markers with the MS is discussed in detail. The general goals of treatment of the MS are prevention of CHD events and diabetes if not already present. The approach to treatment of those with the MS should include lifestyle changes, including weight loss and exercise as well as appropriate pharmacological therapies. Certain medications, which may be used in persons with MS, have been shown to have beneficial effects on clinical outcome and/or anti-inflammatory effects.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To verify the feasibility of ovarian stromal evaluation and correlate ovarian parameteres (echogenicity and volume) with hyperandrogenism, and both cardiovascular and metabolic risk factors in PCOS. METHODS Twenty four young PCOS patients and twelve age-matched control women were enrolled. Diagnosis of PCOS was based on the Rotterdam criteria. Ultrasound ovarian study included ovarian volume, stromal volume, stromal area and stromal area/total ovarian area ratio (S/A). Concerning hormones, insulin, LH, FSH, estradiol, androstenedione, testosterone, DHEAS, 17-hydroxy-progesterone, and SHBG were measured during the early follicular phase (days 2-5). Cardiovascular risk factors were represented by fasting plasma levels of glucose, lipids (total and HDL-cholesterol), plasminogen activator inhibitor 1 (PAI-1), von-Willebrand factor (vWF), and adiponectin. Carotid intima-media thickness (C-IMT) was measured as a parameter of cardiovascular risk. RESULTS A positive correlation between the S/A ratio and plasma levels of testosterone (p < 0.05) and androstenedione (p < 0.05) was found. The stromal volume, stromal area and S/A ratio were also significantly and positively correlated with PAI-1, and vWF levels, and with IMT in PCOS women (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS This study shows that the ultrasound measurement of ovarian stroma is a predicting factor of hyperandrogenism degree, prothrombotic factors and cardiovascular risk in patients with PCOS.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study a possible use of sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) and corticosteroid-binding globulin (CBG) as markers for changes in hemostatic factors during oral postmenopausal hormone replacement therapy (HRT). METHODS Twenty-eight postmenopausal women were treated with oral conjugated equine estrogens+oral medroxyprogesterone acetate (CEE + MPA, n = 15) or with placebo (n = 13). Serum SHBG, CBG, testosterone, cortisol and plasma coagulation factors, coagulation inhibitors and markers of coagulation activation were measured before and after 6 and 12 months of treatment. RESULTS Pretreatment plasminogen activator inhibitor 1 (PAI-1) levels correlated negatively to SHBG and antithrombin III (AT III) negatively to total and free cortisol. In the CEE + MPA group, CBG, SHBG and Factor VII increased, and PAI-1, AT III and free testosterone decreased during treatment. No significant changes were found in plasma von Willebrand factor antigen, thrombin-antithrombin complex, fibrin D-dimer and fibrinogen. A significant, negative correlation was found between changes in SHBG and PAI-1. No changes were found in the placebo group. CONCLUSION The only correlation found between changes in "steroid sensitive" proteins and hemostatic factors was between increased SHBG and a possibly beneficial effect of estrogens, i.e. decreased PAI-1 values. SHBG or CBG could not be used as predictors of increased cardiovascular risk during postmenopausal oral HRT.

Abstract
Abnormalities in coagulation and haemostasis represent a well-known link between obesity and thrombosis (both arterial and venous). Several studies have shown that obese patients have higher plasma concentrations of all pro-thrombotic factors (fibrinogen, vonWillebrand factor (vWF), and factor VII), as compared to non-obese controls, with a positive association with central fat. Similarly, plasma concentrations of plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) have been shown to be higher in obese patients as compared to non-obese controls and to be directly correlated with visceral fat. Furthermore, obesity is characterized by higher plasma concentrations of anti-thrombotic factors, such as tissue-type plasminogen activator (t-PA) and protein C, as compared to non-obese controls, the increase in these factors being likely to represent a protective response partly counteracting the increase in pro-thrombotic factors. The issue of whether adipose tissue contributes directly to plasma PAI-1, its products stimulating other cells to produce PAI-1, or whether it primarily contributes indirectly has not yet been resolved. It has been proposed that the secretion of interleukin-6 (IL-6) by adipose tissue, combined with the actions of adipose tissue-expressed TNF-alpha in obesity, could underlie the association of insulin resistance with endothelial dysfunction, coagulopathy, and coronary heart disease. The role of leptin in impairing haemostasis and promoting thrombosis has been recently reported. Finally, some hormonal abnormalities (androgen, F, catecholamines) associated with the accumulation of body fat may contribute to the impairment of coagulative pathway in obesity. As to intervention strategies, dietary (i.e., low-fat high-fiber diet) and lifestyle (i.e., physical activity) measures have been demonstrated to be effective in improving the obesity-associated pro-thrombotic risk profile.

Abstract
Leptin, the satiety hormone expressed almost exclusively in adipose tissue, is a marker of body fat accumulation in humans. Recent studies have shown that plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1), a prothrombotic factor associated with atherosclerosis complications, is also produced in adipose tissue. The objective of the present study was to determine whether PAI-1 antigen plasma concentrations are associated with leptin plasma levels or the body fat mass (FM) independently of the variables known to influence PAI-1 production. Sixty-one nondiabetic women aged 18 to 45 years with a wide range of values for the body mass index ([BMI] 18.1 to 37.7 kg/m2) were evaluated for (1) body FM and fasting plasma levels of (2) PAI-1 antigen, (3) PAI-1 activity, (4) leptin, (5) insulin, (6) blood glucose, and (7) lipids (cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein [HDL]-cholesterol, and triglycerides [TG]). Body FM and fat-free mass (FFM) were estimated during fasting conditions by the bioimpedance analysis (BIA) method using a tetrapolar device. Body fat distribution was evaluated by the waist circumference and the waist to hip ratio (WHR). FM was directly associated with both PAI-1 antigen (r = .585, P < .001) and PAI-1 activity (r = .339, P < .001). Seemingly, leptin was positively related to both PAI-1 antigen (r = .630, P < .001) and PAI-1 activity (r = .497, P < .001). Moreover, both PAI-I antigen and PAI-1 activity were directly correlated with FFM (r = .285, P < .05, and r = .336, P < .01, respectively), BMI (r = .594, P < .001, and r = .458, P < .001, respectively), and WHR (r = .510, P < .001, and r = .391, P < .005, respectively). Insulin was directly related to PAI-1 antigen (r = .540, P < .001), PAI-1 activity (r = .259, P < .05), leptin (r = .447, P < .001), and FM (r = .435, P < .001). The association between PAI-1 antigen (dependent variable) and leptin or FM was tested by a stepwise regression model simultaneously including leptin, FM, BMI, WHR, age, FFM, and fasting insulin, blood glucose, TG, cholesterol, and HDL-cholesterol as independent variables. PAI-1 antigen maintained a significant positive independent relationship only with leptin (t = 2.923, P < .01), insulin (t = 3.489, P < .001), and fasting blood glucose (t = 2.092, P < .05), and a negative independent relationship with HDL-cholesterol (t = -2.634, P < .05). In conclusion, the strong relationship between PAI-1 antigen and leptin irrespective of other variables known to influence these factors seems to indicate that leptin per se may potentially increase PAI-1 plasma concentrations in obese subjects.

Abstract
The increased incidence of cardiovascular diseases in obese subjects could be partially attributed to impaired fibrinolysis due to elevated plasma levels of tissue plasminogen activator inhibitor 1 (PAI-1). The associations between changes in plasma PAI-1, metabolic variables, and adipose tissue during weight loss and regain were studied in 52 healthy, premenopausal, obese women participating in a weight reduction program with a hypocaloric diet. PAI-1, insulin, triglyceride, leptin, and adipsin levels were determined at entry, after the first week, after completion of the program, and after 5 months of follow-up. In the 33 obese women who completed the program, decreases in PAI-1 antigen (-54%), PAI activity (-74%), and leptin (-51%), but not of adipsin, were observed. Changes in PAI-1 were associated with changes in body mass index (BMI), body fat, leptin, and insulin. The decreased level of PAI-1 remained low after follow-up in the 14 women who maintained their reduced weight but increased in the 16 women who regained weight. This increase in PAI-1 was correlated with an increase in body fat and leptin. On multivariate analysis, BMI was the major determinant of PAI-1 level. In conclusion, during weight reduction with a hypocaloric diet, the decrease in PAI-1 is more closely related to changes in adipose tissue than to changes in metabolic variables, suggesting a significant role for adipose tissue in regulating plasma levels of PAI-1.

Abstract
Epidemiological reports are inconsistent on the association between breast cancer risk and the dietary intake of either individual fatty acids or of antioxidant vitamins. It is postulated here that the inconsistencies are in part due to interactions between the two classes of nutrients at the level of the cell membrane, affecting their potential role in mammary carcinogenesis. In this review, the effects of specific dietary fatty acids and antioxidant vitamins on experimental mammary cancer systems are compared with reported epidemiological associations of the same agents with breast cancer risk in humans. An increased ratio of n-3 to n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in the diet inhibits the growth of the rat mammary cancer model. There is also evidence that members of the n-3 PUFA series can inhibit the growth of human breast cancer cells both in vitro and in explants. Clinical trials of supplementary n-3 PUFAs in conjunction with a reduced fat intake have been proposed for breast cancer prevention. It is postulated that further dietary supplementation with vitamin E and a retinoid is likely to increase the effectiveness of such a diet. A study of this type allows better control of specific dietary components than prospective trials of dietary fat reduction which are presently under evaluation. In particular, it is suggested that studies focusing on a single nutrient often fail to recognise interactions with other nutrients.

Abstract
Increased plasma plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) concentration has been identified as a risk factor for coronary heart disease. We investigated the relative contribution of both metabolic factors involved in the insulin resistance (IR) syndrome and polymorphisms of the PAI-1 gene to plasma levels of PAI-1 in 228 healthy nuclear white families from the Stanislas Cohort. Variables related to IR included body mass index, waist-to-hip ratio, fasting insulin, triglyceride, and HDL cholesterol. Five PAI-1 gene polymorphisms were studied, including a newly described G+12078A substitution in the 3' region. A sex difference was observed, with fathers exhibiting higher IR state and PAI-1 levels and stronger correlations between PAI-1 and IR variables than mothers. Such a difference was not observed in offspring. Family correlations were of similar magnitude for fibrinolytic parameters and IR variables. The PAI-1 genotypes A-844G, -675 4G/5G, and G+12078A polymorphisms, which were in strong linkage disequilibrium, were associated with plasma PAI-1 levels. In multivariate analysis, IR explained a major part of PAI-1 variability (49% in fathers, 29% in mothers), whereas polymorphisms had only a minor contribution, explaining 3% of variability in women and having no significant effect in men. We conclude that plasma levels of PAI-1 are, in a healthy population, primarily determined by the IR syndrome, this relationship being stronger in males. The contribution of the PAI-1 gene seems larger in females. These results deserve special attention for understanding the relationships observed between fibrinolytic parameters and the risk of developing a cardiovascular ischemic event.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between androgenic status and plasma levels of both prothrombotic and antithrombotic factors in men, irrespective of obesity, body fat distribution, and metabolic parameters. Sixty-four apparently healthy men, 40 with a body mass index (BMI) greater than 25 kg/m2 (overweight and obese [OO]) and 24 non-obese controls with a BMI less than 25, were selected and evaluated for (1) plasma concentrations of plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) antigen, PAI-1 activity, fibrinogen, von Willebrand factor (vWF) antigen, vWF activity, and factor VII (FVII) as the prothrombotic factors; (2) plasma levels of tissue plasminogen activator (TPA) antigen, protein C, and antithrombin III as the antithrombotic factors; (3) fasting plasma concentrations of insulin and glucose and the lipid pattern (triglycerides [TG] and total and high-density lipoprotein [HDL] cholesterol) as the metabolic parameters; and (4) free testosterone (FT), dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS), and sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) serum levels as the parameters of androgenicity. Body fat distribution was evaluated by the waist to hip ratio (WHR). In OO and non-obese subjects taken together, plasma levels of PAI-1 antigen, fibrinogen, and FVII were inversely associated with FT (r = .255, P < .05, r = -3.14, P < .05, and r = -.278, P < .05, respectively), and the negative relationships of both fibrinogen and FVII with FT were maintained after stepwise multiple regression analysis. Plasma concentrations of PAI-1 antigen and PAI-1 activity were also negatively correlated with SHBG (r = -.315, P < .05 and r = -.362, P < .01, respectively), and these associations held irrespective of the other parameters investigated. None of the antithrombotic and fibrinolytic factors were independently related to serum androgen levels. Subjects with a BMI higher than 25 kg/m2 had higher plasma concentrations of PAI-1 antigen, PAI-1 activity, and fibrinogen as compared with non-obese controls (P < .001, P < .001, and P < .01, respectively). In addition, in OO and control subjects as a whole, multiple stepwise regression analysis showed that the associations of BMI with PAI-1 activity, fibrinogen, vWF antigen, and vWF activity were independent of any other metabolic and hormonal parameters. Plasma concentrations of PAI-1 antigen, PAI-1 activity, and fibrinogen were also directly correlated with WHR in all subjects taken together, irrespective of the other parameters investigated. Evaluation of antithrombotic factors showed that OO subjects had higher TPA plasma concentrations than non-obese controls (P < .001), whereas protein C and antithrombin III did not differ in the two groups. TPA was also directly correlated with BMI (r = .415, P < .001) and WHR (r = .393, P < .001) in all subjects. The results of this study indicate that (1) men with lower FT serum levels have higher fibrinogen and FVII plasma concentrations, and those with lower SHBG serum levels also have higher levels of PAI-1 antigen and activity; (2) irrespective of other factors, obesity per se may account for higher concentrations of PAI-1, fibrinogen, and vWF; (3) plasma levels of PAI-1 (antigen and activity) and fibrinogen correlate independently with WHR; and (4) among the investigated antithrombotic factors (TPA antigen, protein C, antithrombin III), only TPA antigen plasma concentrations are higher in men with abdominal obesity. Thus, because of the increase in several prothrombotic factors, men with central obesity, particularly those with lower androgenicity, seem to be at greater risk for coronary heart disease (CHD). Apparently, this risk is not counteracted by a parallel increase in plasma concentrations of antithrombotic factors.

Abstract
Impaired fibrinolysis due to elevated levels of plasma plasminogen activator inhibitor type 1 (PAI-1) is a risk factor for thromboembolic disease. Hypertension, obesity, derangements in lipid and glucose homeostasis, and elevated levels of PAI-1 are features of the insulin resistance syndrome. The interrelationships between PAI-1 and the metabolic disturbances seen in this condition are unsettled. We investigated the associations between PAI-1 activity and components of the insulin resistance syndrome in 53 men and 31 women with untreated hypertension. In men, PAI-1 activity correlated significantly with plasma glucose (r = .41, P = .002), insulin sensitivity (r = -.35, P = .01), and insulin-induced suppression of nonesterified fatty acid (NEFA) (r = -.43, P = .007). Plasma glucose and NEFA suppression were independently associated with PAI-1 activity in a multivariate analysis. In women, PAI-1 activity correlated with body mass index (r = .62, P = .0005), waist-to-hip ratio (r = .75, P = .0001), plasma glucose (r = .50, P = .007), insulin (r = .49, P = .009), proinsulin (r = .57, P = .002), C-peptide (r = .60, P = .0009), insulin sensitivity (r = -.74, P = .0001), NEFA suppression (r = -.64, P = .003), and triglycerides (r = .58, P = .001). In multivariate analyses, insulin sensitivity and NEFA suppression were independently associated with PAI-1 if waist-to-hip ratio was not included in the model. After introduction of waist-to-hip ratio into the model, waist-to-hip ratio was the only independent predictor of PAI-1 activity. We conclude that in women, waist-to-hip ratio, body mass index, and insulin-induced NEFA suppression are determinants for PAI-1 activity. In men, insulin-induced NEFA suppression and plasma glucose are independently associated with PAI-1 activity.

Abstract
This study assessed the short- and long-term effects of an energy-restrictive diet with or without exercise on plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 antigen (PAI-1 Ag) and PAI-1 activity, tissue-type plasminogen activator antigen (TPA Ag), and fibrinogen serum levels. Healthy, overweight postmenopausal women (age, 53.8+/-2.5 years; body mass index, 25 to 42 kg/m2; n=121) were randomly assigned to one of three groups: control, 4200-kJ/d diet, or 4200-kJ/d diet with combined aerobic and anaerobic exercise. PAI-1 activity and PAI-1 Ag, TPA Ag, and fibrinogen levels were measured at baseline, after a 12-week intervention, and after a further 6-month follow-up. PAI-1 Ag and activity and TPA Ag were positively correlated with serum triglyceride levels, the abdominal-to-total-body fat ratio (as assessed by total-body dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry), fasting blood glucose, and systolic BP and negatively with HDL cholesterol and sex hormone-binding globulin. The diet led to profound decreases and normalization of PAI-1 activity (approximately 50%), PAI-1 Ag (approximately 30%) and TPA Ag (approximately (29%), but exercise conferred no additional effect. Fibrinogen did not change. At follow-up there were no longer any significant changes (P>.05). In conclusion, PAI-1 Ag and activity as well as TPA Ag seem to be part of the metabolic syndrome X. The diet made the blood less thrombogenic in the short term with no effect of the added exercise.

Abstract
Recently waist/hip ratio (WHR), a marker of body fat distribution, has been described as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD). The aim of the present study was to evaluate the influence of body fat distribution on metabolic, haemostatic and haemorheological pattern in premenopausal obese women with different WHR. Fourty premenopausal obese women were subdivided into two groups, matched for age and body mass index (BMI): 20 women with abdominal obesity (WHR = 0.94 +/- 0.02) and 20 women with peripheral obesity (WHR = 0.77 +/- 0.03). Twenty nonobese women were recruited as control group. The abdominal obesity group had significantly higher blood glucose, triglycerides, total cholesterol, Apolipoprotein B and plasma insulin levels and lower high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and Apolipoprotein A1 levels than the control group. All the haemostatic (figrinogen, Factor VII, plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI) activity and tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA) antigen (Ag) pre venous occlusion (VO)) and haemorheological parameters (haematocrit, whole blood filterability, blood and plasma viscosity) were significantly higher in the abdominal obesity group as compared to the control group. In contrast, mean values of t-PA (Ag) post VO were significantly lower in abdominal obese women. Moreover positive correlations between WHR and plasma insulin (r = 0.68, p < 0.05), between WHR and fibrinogen (r = 0.63, p < 0.05) and between WHR and PAI pre VO (r = 0.71, p < 0.05) and a negative correlation between WHR and t-PA (Ag) post VO (r = -0.55, p < 0.05) were found.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract
Lipoprotein(a) (Lp[a]) is generally considered to be a risk factor for the development of cardiovascular disease, but little is known about the possible influence of obesity on the circulating levels of this lipoprotein. The present study was undertaken to examine this aspect in 136 menstrually active women by comparing the serum concentrations of Lp(a) between 72 obese and 64 age-matched nonobese women. Since an adverse effect of androgens and a protective effect of estrogens have been described for plasma lipoprotein profiles in obese women, the relation between the circulating levels of Lp(a) and those of these other hormones was also investigated in obese patients. In addition, other lipoproteins, anthropometric parameters (body mass index and waist-to-hip ratio), and insulin were evaluated. The levels of Lp(a) were not significantly different (Mann-Whitney U test chi 2, 3.59; p = 0.0582 [NS]) between obese (rank sum, 5,367) and control (rank sum, 3,949) women; in addition, the percentage of patients with high Lp(a) levels (cutoff defined at 30 mg/dL) did not differ between the two groups (obese women, 30%; control, 21.8%; chi 2, 0.90; two-sided p = 0.341 [NS]). Moreover, no correlation was found between Lp(a) and body mass index. Lastly, when the Lp(a) prevalence odds ratio for obesity was examined by adjusting the levels of this lipoprotein for age, triglycerides, total cholesterol, and high density lipoprotein cholesterol, the probability value (0.88) was far from significant. In obese women, no correlation was found between the logarithmically transformed Lp(a) concentrations and all the other variables evaluated in the study. In conclusion, the present study shows that the circulating levels of Lp(a) are not influenced by body weight and cardiovascular risk factors commonly associated with obesity, such as enhanced androgenic activity, hyperinsulinemia, adverse lipoprotein profile, and abdominal fat accumulation.
