Benign cementoblastoma involving multiple maxillary teeth: report of a case with a review of the literature

A rare case of benign cementoblastoma involving multiple deciduous and permanent teeth is presented with a review of the literature. A 12-year-old boy was admitted for a swelling in the right maxillary premolar-molar region. A radiologic examination revealed a well-defined, round, radiopaque mass extending from the right maxillary first premolar to the second permanent molar. The tumor was removed with all associated teeth. A histologic examination of the surgical specimen revealed a well-circumscribed tumor composed of cementum-like tissue surrounded by a fibrous capsule. The tumor was attached to the roots of the second deciduous molar, first premolar, and the first and second permanent molars and embedded in the crown and root of the right maxillary second premolar, suggesting that the lesion had arisen from the second deciduous molar. There has been no recurrence of the lesion more than 18 months after the surgical procedure.

Cementoblastoma: an innocuous neoplasm? A clinicopathologic study of 44 cases and review of the literature with special emphasis on recurrence

The clinicopathologic features of 44 cases of cementoblastoma were analyzed and compared with those of 74 cases from the literature with special emphasis on the clinical behavior, treatment, and recurrence rate of these relatively rare benign odontogenic neoplasms. The cases in the current series were accessioned at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, Washington, DC. Patient ages at diagnosis ranged from 8 years to 44 years, with a mean age of 20.7 years. The tumors affected 30 males and 14 females. The mandible was the site of occurrence in 31 cases (70.4%), with the mandibular first molar the most common tooth involved. Radiographically, more than 90% of the tumors presented as well-defined radiopaque or mixed-density masses confluent with the tooth root(s) and surrounded by a radiolucent rim. Two lesions were radiolucent. Microscopically, cementoblastomas share similar features with osteoblastomas but are unique because of their physical attachment to the tooth root(s). Follow-up was obtained in 35 of 44 cases, with a mean follow-up interval of 5.5 years. Recurrence was documented in 13 cases (37.1%), in contrast to the literature, where only 2 of 34 cases (5.9%) with adequate follow-up recurred. Jaw expansion and perforation of the cortex were noted in a higher percentage of recurrent than nonrecurrent tumors. Because recurrence and continued growth are possible if lesional tissue remains after initial surgery, appropriate treatment should consist of removal of the lesion along with the affected tooth or teeth, followed by thorough curettage or peripheral ostectomy.

Benign cementoblastoma. Case report

Benign cementoblastoma is a rare benign odontogenic tumour of mesenchymal origin. A case of a 24-year-old man with benign cementoblastoma is presented. The lesion manifested as a round, radiopaque mass attached to the root of the left first molar of the mandible. The tooth was extracted and the lesion was removed. A diagnosis of benign cementoblastoma was made microscopically. There has been no evidence of recurrence during the three-year follow-up period. A review of the literature and a discussion of the histologic features of this case are included.

Benign cementoblastoma. A review and five new cases

This article includes five new cases of benign cementoblastoma. The study includes a review on 66 previously published cases that we consider to be bonafide cases. It is considered that benign cementoblastoma continues to be an infrequent entity that particularly affects young patients under the age of 30. The sex distribution shows a slight tendency for being more common in females. The most frequently effected area is the mandibular molar-premolar region. Pain, expansion and, radiographic radiopacity surrounded by a peripheral radiolucent halo are the most striking features. Treatment and prognosis are also discussed. Histopathologic conditions and factors to be considered with respect to differential diagnosis conclude the report.

A case of benign cementoblastoma

A rare case of benign cementoblastoma is reported. Active cementoblasts adding cementoid tissue were observed histologically by means of specific staining for unmineralized matrix of hard tissue. A polarizing microscope and an x-ray diffractometer were used to clarify the cementum-like tissue of benign cementoblastoma. The collagen bundles of tumor tissue showed irregular and random arrangements under polarized light. The qualitative analysis revealed that the mineralized component was composed of low-crystalline hydroxylapatite.

Undiagnosed benign cementoblastoma in a patient with a 6-year pain condition. Report of a case

Symptoms in the lower first molar developed in a 15-year-old girl. The problems started with tenderness during occlusion. The first radiographic examination revealed a radiopacity at the distal root, which was considered in the radiographic report to be a cementoma. Therapy commenced with occlusal adjustment, but this was followed 20 months later by endodontic therapy, which was undertaken because of the suspicion of partial pulpal necrosis with condensing osteitis. A painful condition developed and led first to apicoectomy and then to extraction 2 1/2 years after the start of the endodontic therapy. Light microscopic examination of adjacent hard tissue revealed signs of chronic inflammation on both occasions, and a diagnosis of diffuse sclerosing osteomyelitis was made. The pain was not relieved but remained at a tolerable level for 18 months. Then a reexamination of the first radiographs led to a strong suspicion of a benign cementoblastoma. A thorough third operation revealed a small piece of hard tissue in a lacuna of the lingual part of the mandible covered buccally by granulation tissue and inflammatory affected bone. The final histopathologic diagnosis was benign cementoblastoma combined with chronic inflammation.

Cementoblastoma: review of the literature and report of a case in a 7 year-old girl

Cementoblastoma is a very rare tumour of mesenchymal odontogenic origin. It usually affects adolescents and young adults, the youngest patient ever reported being 8 years-old. It is treated by enucleation and has an excellent prognosis. We review the world literature on the subject and present a case of cementoblastoma in a 7 year-old girl.

Cementoma-like tumours of bone

The authors summarize the morphological findings on cementoma-like fibromas of long bones registered at the Reference Centre for Bone Tumours in Brno or referred to it. One of the cases registered is described in detail from the submicroscopic point of view. Their experience has shown that cementoma-like fibromas of long bones are genuine bone tumours sui generis, differing to some extent from cementomas of the jaws. The cementicles in such tumours are identical to acellular dental cement and structurally quite different from osteoid.

Cementifying fibroma of the maxilla. Report of a case

A case of cementifying fibroma growing into the right maxillary sinus is reported. Clinical and histopathological findings are presented. The differentiation from central fibro-osseous lesions in jaw bones is discussed.

Benign cementoblastoma

A case of benign cementoblastoma in a 20-year-old man has been reviewed. The lesion was typical and was associated with the mandibular right first molar. The patient initially reported symptoms related to that tooth. Radiographically, the lesion was 1.5 cm in diameter and had a peripheral radiolucent border. Histopathologic examination showed a well-circumscribed mass of cementum. Excision of the tumor with removal of the associated tooth resulted in normal osseous healing and no evidence of recurrence after one year.

Benign cementoblastoma

A review of 44 patients with benign cementoblastomas is presented. An additional case is reported. This patient appears to be of particular interest due to radiographic records 18 months prior to admission. In this period the tumor appeared to grow very slowly.
