Distribution of somatosensory and motor behavioral function in cat's frontal cortex

The spatial relationship between the cerebral cortex and fiber trajectory through the corpus callosum of the cat

We related fiber trajectory through the feline corpus callosum to the site of fiber origin in the cortical mantle and to functional modality. The cortical fields which contribute axons to the different portions of the corpus callosum were revealed by applying horseradish peroxidase (HRP) to the cut ends of selected groups of callosal axons in twelve adult cats. Overall, the application of HRP at progressively more caudal positions in the corpus callosum labels fields of neurons at successively more caudal positions in the cerebral cortex. Comparison of these data to functionally distinct cortical zones shows that the callosal body conveys a mixture of fibers arising from functionally diverse regions of the cerebrum, whereas portions of the rostral and caudal ends appear to be essentially unimodal, conveying motor and visual signals, respectively.

Asymbolia for pain: a sensory-limbic disconnection syndrome

We describe the behavioral and neuroanatomical features of asymbolia for pain occurring in 6 patients following unilateral hemispheric damage secondary to ischemic lesions in 5 and traumatic hematoma in 1. In the absence of primary sensory deficits, these 6 patients showed a lack of withdrawal and absent or inadequate emotional responses to painful stimuli applied over the entire body, as well as to threatening gestures. Five patients also failed to react to verbal menaces. Patients appeared unconcerned about the defect and seemed unable to learn appropriate escape or protective responses. Common associated abnormalities were rapidly resolving hemiparesis, cortical-type sensory loss, unilateral neglect, and body-schema disorders. Neuroradiological examination disclosed left hemispheric lesions in 4 patients and right hemispheric involvement in 2. Although lesion extension differed, the insular cortex was invariably damaged in all 6 patients. These findings suggest that insular damage may play a critical role in the development of the syndrome by interrupting connections between sensory cortices and the limbic system.

Disruption of tactile discrimination in rats by bilateral stimulation of midbrain lemniscal pathways

Bilateral stimulation in the midbrain medial lemniscus disrupted tactile discrimination in four of nine rats. Single conditioning shocks in the midbrain of these animals attenuated by more than 80% the somatosensory cortical evoked responses elicited by test shocks to the contralateral forepaw. Midbrain stimulation did not selectively disrupt discrimination in the remaining five rats, and midbrain conditioning shocks attenuated the cortical test response by less than 80% on at least one side. The four rats that showed disrupted discrimination and bilaterally strong attenuation of cortical responses also had both midbrain electrodes in or next to the medial lemniscus. The five rats that did not show these effects had at least one midbrain electrode away from that structure.

Tactile discrimination learning in the monkey: the effects of unilateral or bilateral removals of the second somatosensory cortex (area SII)

The tactile impairment in monkeys with unilateral removals of area SII is seen as possibly analogous to the rare condition of tactile agnosia. The lesions in a new series of animals with SII removals are described. The performance of 3 groups of monkeys is compared: no group differences were obtained on visual tasks (except retrieval of a moving target); minimal if any differences were obtained on inter-manual transfer of tactile learning; significant differences were found between animals with unilateral or bilateral removals of SII relative to unoperated animals at re-learning tactile discrimination tasks, irrespective of the hand being used. These findings suggest that area SII projects to a further neural system involved in somatosensory performance; and that a unilateral removal has its effect through the functional disruption of the intact SII.

Somatic submodality distribution within the second somatosensory (SII), 7b, retroinsular, postauditory, and granular insular cortical areas of M. fascicularis

Somatic response properties were determined for over 1,300 neurons isolated within and near the lateral sulci of unanesthetized and unparalyzed cynomolgus monkeys. Somatic stimuli unequivocally activated the majority of units studied in SII (93%) and in cortical fields surrounding SII: area 7b (65%), the retroinsular field (74%), and the granular insula (76%). No activation other than somatic was seen for SII neurons, and noxious somatic stimulation was rarely required. The SII units almost always responded in a rapidly adapting manner to hair or skin stimulation, but not both; however, the submodality distribution seen in SII varied as a function of peripheral receptor locations. Two small zones within SII contained neurons that responded only if the animal actively interacted with the stimulus. In contrast, one-half of the sample of neurons from area 7b unequivocally responded only to somatic stimulation. Although many neurons in the lateral parts of area 7b were vigorously activated by innocuous tactile stimulation, others demonstrated little association with an identifiable somatic submodality, had sluggish responses, required complex, noxious, visual or other non-somatic stimuli for activation, and had labile response properties and receptive fields. Indeed, the responses of some area 7b neurons suggested a possible relationship with the animal's attention towards or anticipation of a noxious or a novel somatic stimulus. Neurons within the retroinsular cortex (Ri), which receives projections from the posterior nucleus (PO), primarily responded to light tactile stimulation of rapidly adapting skin receptors; less than 3% responded to moderate or high threshold mechanical stimulation. The sensitivity to tactile stimulation in Ri closely resembled the responses of SII neurons. Neurons in the granular insula (Ig) often responded to gentle hair deflection within receptive fields covering large areas of the body. Ig and area 7b were the principle loci within the lateral sulcus that contained neurons responding to noxious stimulation. Owing to the great similarity in the somatic response properties within these areas in the awake and unparalyzed animal, the designation of cortical areas could only be made after correlating the recording sites with connectional and cytoarchitectonic analyses in the same animal. Consequently, previous physiological studies may have attributed to SII some of the response characteristics of neurons in neighboring areas.

Detection thresholds to stimulation of ventrobasal complex in cats

Cats were trained to indicate, by bar pressing for food rewards, their detection of stimulation of the ventrobasal (VB) complex delivered through implanted bipolar electrodes. By varying stimulus intensity it was possible to determine thresholds for detection. Scaling stimulus intensity relative to the appearance of a minimal evoked potential allowed comparisons between animals and also comparisons with results obtained by stimulation of peripheral nerve. Animals could detect VB stimulation, but only at stimulus intensities consistently stronger than those required for minimal appearance of an evoked response in ipsilateral primary somatosensory cortex. Results of VB activation differed from cutaneous nerve effects in that VB detection thresholds were markedly influenced by stimulus frequency. They were lowest at frequencies above 30 Hz and increased greatly at lower frequencies. Discomfort or pain did not seem to result even from relatively high stimulus intensities. The results compare well with observations obtained from stimulation of VB in humans. The appearance of an evoked cortical response is not necessarily correlated with behavior. Under appropriate conditions, behavior can be elicited predictably with minimal electrocortical activity; under other conditions detection may be absent even when large numbers of cortical neurons are activated. We suggest that regions of the cerebral cortex receiving thalamocortical projections from VB may not be essential in the detection process.

Delayed-alternation performance after selective lesions within the prefrontal cortex of the cat

On the basis of new neuroanatomical findings on relationships between subregions of the mediodorsal thalamic nucleus and the prefrontal cortex of the cat, it was attempted to investigate the relative importance of prefrontal subfields with the aim of obtaining evidence in favor of a functional inequality of different prefrontal subfields. Four areas, named presylvian (PRS), proreal (PR), dorsomedial (DM), and orbito-insular (OI) sectors, were ablated successfully in 30 adult animals. Performance of a 10-sec delayed-alternation task was compared pre- and postoperatively. Furthermore, most of the cats had to learn an extension of this task postoperatively, using a 20-sec delay period, and lastly, these animals were subjected to an extinction test. Significant performance differences were obtained between cats of different groups in all three tasks. Lesions of subregion PR, and even more of subregion PRS, led to severe behavioral deterioration, whereas lesions of subregion OI were without effect, when compared with the behavior of a sham-operated control group. PRS-cats, furthermore, showed motor disturbances during the first postoperative week. The results obtained suggest that it is possible to subdivide the cat's prefrontal cortex functionally. In addition, it is hypothesized that behavioral changes in cats of groups PRS and PR are due to an inability to use kinesthetic information properly.
