Effects of Force Output and Preparation on Fractionated Reaction Time

Fractionated reaction times of elbow-flexion to light stimuli were measured when two kinds of loads (light and heavy) were applied to the elbow joint. Premotor time for the heavy load was lengthened in comparison with that for the light load. This fact suggests that the intensity of the muscle tension required for the response influences the initiation of the output from the central nervous system. When subjects were informed about the load before presentation of the stimulus, premotor time was shorter than that under the conditions without the information. It seemed that the preparatory set for the force output influenced the fractionated reaction time for 20 subjects.

Does a warning signal accelerate the processing of sensory information? Evidence from recognition potential responses to high and low frequency words

Electrophysiological and behavioral data were obtained in 12 subjects who detected valid words in a background stream of random letter strings. Behavioral reaction time (RT) showed significant effects of warning signal presentation and the frequency of word usage in printed literature. Cross-correlation functions were used to estimate delays of electrophysiological responses. The critical response was the recognition potential (RP). The RP is a response of the brain that occurs when a person views recognizable images, such as words, pictures, or faces. Its latency is usually less than 300 ms. Both the RP and longer latency activity occurring at approximately 400--600 ms were delayed more for low than for high frequency words. The longer latency responses showed shorter delay if a warning signal was presented, but the RP did not. The results supported the idea that a non-informative warning signal decreases RT by altering response-related processes without facilitating sensory processes.

Bilateral coupling in learned blinking: side superiority, synchrony and temporal coordination in normal cats

In order to study interocular temporal coupling in the initiation of learned symmetrical blinking, experiments were carried out on cats trained to blink in response to a 500-ms tone paired with 100-ms airpuffs randomly delivered to either eye (alternate airpuff; 6 animals) or simultaneously directed to both eyes (bilateral airpuff; 4 animals) 400 ms after tone onset. In spite of the fact that differences in conditioned response (CR) latencies of the right and left eye varied in a wide range between positive and negative values in all subjects, a statistically significant difference between the mean CR latencies of the two eyes (further called side superiority) was found in 6 animals, of which 4 were trained by alternate airpuff and 2 by bilateral airpuff. Superiority of the right eye was found in 3 animals and the opposite was observed in the other 3. Analysis of the differences between CR latencies of the two eyes showed that side superiority was not due to the ability of one eye to give CRs consistently shorter than those of the other eye, but it crucially depended on the higher proportion of trials in which the superior eye led. The ability to give simultaneous CRs by the two eyes was found inversely related to the mean CR latency per session and subject. Regression analysis showed that power equations best described these relationships. In all animals, the frequency distribution of simultaneous CRs paralleled the frequency distribution of all CRs. In spite of a considerable trial-by-trial variability in the temporal relationships between CR latencies of the two eyes, clear-cut linear correlations were found by plotting the mean CR latencies of the right and left eye per both session and subject. The results reviewed in this paper are best accounted for by suggesting that blink onset of the two eyes is independently controlled by two distinct command signals and is modulated by bilaterally-balanced and lateralized influences.

Sequence of preparatory set for response movement

Electromyographic reaction times (EMG-RTs) of the right biceps brachii muscle were examined for two movement patterns, elbow flexion and forearm supination, in 8 healthy male subjects under simple and complex RT conditions with varied preparatory intervals (PIs): 0, 200, 400, 600, and 800 msec. In the simple RT condition, the subject was informed of the movement patterns to be performed prior to beginning the trials. In the complex RT condition the subject had to choose one of the two movement patterns at the time of the presentation of a warning signal. The results indicated that: (1) compared with the simple RT condition a delay of about 100 msec. in over-all mean EMG-RT was observed at PI = 0 msec. in the complex RT condition; (2) the difference of over-all mean EMG-RT between the two RT conditions disappeared when PI = 400 msec.; and (3) the difference in EMG-RTs between flexion and supination in the complex RT condition became the same as that in the simple RT condition when PI = 700 msec. It is assumed that the preparatory set for response movements is organized in an order, resulting in the differentiation of RT.
